Custom orders · Colour, scent and the jar order
A custom colour is the most visible promise on a candle order and the easiest to get wrong. The jar frames it, the wax changes it, the fragrance can shift it, and the dye can change how the candle burns. Order 1,000 jars last in that chain, not first.
₹1,664.82
development kit to finalise jar, wax, fragrance, colour and wick in the real jar before ordering 1,000 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Do I finalise everything before ordering 1,000 jars? Finalise the jar model first, then test wax, fragrance, colour and wick inside a 5-pack of that jar. Order the 1,000 jars once the sample is approved. The development kit is ₹1,664.82; the jars are ₹30,703.60.

Why does the jar come first? The jar frames the colour — clear glass shows the whole candle, White Matte glass hides everything but the top surface — and its diameter sets the wick. A colour approved in one jar can look wrong in another.

Can I get a custom green? Not from a green dye on the pull date: green liquid dye and green chips are out of stock, and yellow liquid too. Yellow chips (₹250.00) and blue liquid (₹236.00 for 15 g) are in stock — blend and test. See building the colour.

How much dye for 1,000 candles? Dye doses aren't published in our data. Record your approved test dose per kg of wax, then multiply by the order's 163.5 kg. Every 1 g per kg in the test is 164 g on the order.
The short answer
Decision order: Jar model → wax → fragrance and load → colour → wick. Each is tested inside the choices before it; the wick is confirmed last by a burn test.
Development kit: Salsa 5-pack ₹200.60 · CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 · Cucumber Green Tea ₹352.82 · blue liquid dye 15 g ₹236.00 · yellow dye chips ₹250.00 · 20 wicks ₹118.00 = ₹1,664.82.
After approval: 1,030 Salsa jars ₹30,703.60 · CSI 464 164 kg ₹83,213.60 · Cucumber Green Tea 14.25 kg ₹47,468.45 · wicks ₹6,136.00 · dye scaled from your test dose.
A custom-coloured candle — the order of decisions before 1,000 jars 1 Jar model 5-pack · ₹200.60 → 2 Wax 1 kg · ₹507.40 → 3 Fragrance + load 1 × 100 g · ₹352.82 → 4 Colour blue liquid + yellow chips → 5 Wick burn test · 20 for ₹118.00 Development kit ₹1,664.82 — then, and only then: Order 1,030 jars · ₹30,703.60 Each step is tested inside the one before it. The wick comes last because colour, fragrance and load all change how the candle burns.
Five decisions, each tested inside the ones before it, all inside a 5-pack of the real jar. The development kit costs ₹1,664.82. The jar order it protects costs ₹30,703.60 — and a jar ordered before the colour and wick are proven is the most expensive thing on this list to get wrong.
Straight answer
A client wants a custom-coloured candle — should I finalise fragrance, colour, wick and wax before ordering 1,000 jars?
Yes — with one exception: the jar model has to be decided first, because every other decision is tested inside it. Buy a 5-pack of the jar you intend to use (the 200 ml Salsa jar is ₹200.60 for 5), then finalise in order: wax (it sets the base colour the dye works on), fragrance and load (some oils tint wax), colour (matched in the real jar, in daylight, after the candle has set), and last the wick, confirmed by a burn test with the colour and fragrance in, because dye and fragrance can both change how a candle burns. The whole development kit is about ₹1,664.82. Only when the client has approved a finished sample — colour, scent, burn — order the 1,030 jars (₹30,703.60). Ordering jars first risks owning a thousand of a jar the colour looks wrong in, or one whose diameter the wick can't handle. For a sage-green brief, note that green liquid dye, green chips and yellow liquid dye are out of stock on the pull date; blue liquid and yellow chips are in stock to blend. Dye doses aren't in our data, so scale your tested dose to the order's 163.5 kg of wax. If the scent isn't chosen yet, start there.
One line: jar model first, wick last, and the 1,000 jars only after a finished sample is approved.

The order of decisions

Five decisions, one sequence. Get the sequence wrong and you'll make some of them twice.

The scenario: a lifestyle brand wants 1,000 candles in their signature sage green, with a fresh scent to match. They've seen a photo of a candle in a clear jar and want "that, in our colour". You're weighing up whether to order the jars now to save time. The table shows why the jar model is decided now, but the jar order waits.

Lead table · each decision, what it changes and what to buy to make it
What to finalise, in what order, and what it costs to decide
# Decision What it changes downstream Buy to decide it Cost
1 Jar model How the colour reads; the diameter the wick must melt One 5-pack of the real jar ₹200.60
2 Wax The base colour and opacity the dye works on 1 kg of the production wax ₹507.40
3 Fragrance and load Some oils tint the wax; load changes burn 1 × 100 g (₹352.82) ₹352.82
4 Colour Can change the burn; must be approved in the real jar Blue liquid 15 g + yellow chips ₹486.00
5 Wick Confirmed by burn test with everything above in place 20 Eco Thin C1 wicks ₹118.00
Kit ₹1,664.82
then Order 1,000 jars — 10 × 100 (₹2,950.00) + 6 × 5 (₹200.60) ₹30,703.60

The development kit is 5.4% of what the jars alone cost. It's the cheapest way to find out whether the colour works in this glass, whether the scent pulls it off-shade, and whether a wick can carry a full melt pool through a dyed, scented candle in this diameter. Every one of those can go wrong, and every one of them is cheaper to discover in five jars than in a thousand.

The photo-in-a-different-jar trap. Clients approve colours from photos, often of a candle in a different jar, under different light. A sage that looks right in a thin clear tumbler can look muddy through thicker glass, and invisible behind a White Matte Glass Jar. Never approve a colour from a photo. Approve it from a set candle in the actual jar, held by the client.

Why the jar model comes first

The jar decides how much of the colour anyone sees. A clear jar like the 200 ml Salsa shows the whole candle from the side; the colour is the product. A White Matte jar shows only the top surface, so a custom colour is mostly a lid-off surprise. That's not a reason to avoid matte — it's a reason to decide before anyone mixes a dye.

Jars in CSI's catalogue that show or hide colour · catalogue pull 24–25 September 2026
Jar choice and colour visibility
Jar Price Colour shows Cap / lid Note
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar ₹200.60 / 5 · ₹2,950.00 / 100 Whole candle, through clear glass Golden lug cap included fill weight not published
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml ₹47.20 each Whole candle, through clear glass Clear cap included fill weight not published
White Matte Glass Jar ₹354.00 / 5 Top surface only not included colour mostly hidden
Golden Aluminium Tin ₹360.00 / 12 Top surface only not stated 85 g published fill

The jar's diameter matters as much as its glass. The wick has to melt the full width of the jar, and wick sizing for a given diameter isn't in our data — it's found by burn test. If you order 1,000 jars and then find the wick that suits your coloured, scented wax can't get a full melt pool in them, you are choosing between a new jar and a compromise candle. What to test before bulk materials sets out the full test list for a 1,000-piece custom order.

Buy the jar 5-pack, not the 100-pack, for testing
The Salsa jar is ₹40.12 a jar in the 5-pack and ₹29.50 in the 100-pack. It's tempting to buy a 100-pack for testing because it's cheaper per jar. Don't: ₹2,950.00 of jars before the spec is proven is exactly the risk this page is about. The 5-pack is the right test quantity.

Building the colour

Sage green is a brief. The dye shelf decides how you meet it.

Green dye chips — Out of stock

With no green dye in stock, a sage has to be built. Blue and yellow make green; a touch of brown or black knocks it back toward sage. Start with small, weighed additions in a known weight of melted wax, pour a test in the real jar, and let it set fully before judging — soy often looks different set than molten. Dye doses aren't in our data; follow the dye's product page for guidance, and record exactly what you used per kilo of wax. If the brief is a colour you can't build from what's in stock, ask on WhatsApp when the missing dye is expected before you promise a date.

Colour also interacts with the other decisions. Soy wax sets opaque and creamy, so a dye reads softer in soy than it would in paraffin. Some fragrance oils carry a tint of their own. Cucumber Green Tea suits a green brief on scent, but pour a dyed test with the oil in — not a dyed test without it — because the oil may shift the shade. That's why colour is decision four, after wax and fragrance.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We'd sell more dye if we told you to buy 100 g of blue and a handful of chips now for the whole order. Don't. Buy 15 g and one pack of chips for the tests. You won't know the order's dye quantity until the client approves a shade and you've recorded the dose — and a colour change after approval would leave you holding dye for a shade nobody wants.

Why the wick comes last

In general practice, dye, fragrance and load can each change how a candle burns: heavier loads and some dyes can affect the flame and the melt pool. So a wick that burns well in plain wax may under- or over-perform in the finished, coloured, scented candle. The only reliable answer is a burn test of the finished formula in the real jar. Wick sizing per diameter isn't published in our data; Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5.90 each make trial wicks cheap.

1
Buy the jar 5-pack and decide the jarPut the client's colour reference next to it in daylight. If they want the colour seen, it has to be clear glass.
2
Pour a plain test in the production waxCSI 464, rated up to 10% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated maximum). This is your base colour.
3
Add the fragrance at the proposed loadPour with the oil in and note any shift in tone before any dye goes near it.
4
Build the colour in weighed stepsRecord grams of dye per kilogram of wax for each test. Let each one set fully before judging.
5
Get the colour and scent approved on a set candleIn the real jar, by the client, in writing — shade, scent, load, fill line.
6
Burn-test the approved formula for the wickTwo or three wicks on the finished formula. Choose on a full, even melt pool and a steady flame.
7
Then order the 1,000 jars — and everything else1,030 Salsa jars, wax, oil, wicks and dye scaled from the approved test. Ask CSI on WhatsApp to confirm jar and dye stock first.
The CSI principle
The jar is the frame. The wick is the proof. Order the frame in bulk only after the proof.
Everything between them — wax, scent, colour — is tested inside the frame, and the wick is tested last on the finished formula. A thousand jars ordered before that are a thousand bets.

Scaling the approved sample to 1,000

Once the sample is approved, the order is arithmetic. At a 170 g fill (assumed — weigh yours) and 8%, each candle is 13.6 g of oil and 156.4 g of wax. With 15 test and QC candles and a 3% allowance on oil and wax (plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns — a working assumption), the order is:

Dye is scaled from the dose you recorded in the approved test, multiplied by the wax in the order (163.5 kg). The table below shows the arithmetic for three example test doses of the blue component. These are not dose recommendations — dye doses aren't in our data — they are there to show how your own recorded figure turns into an order.

Arithmetic only · example test doses, not recommendations · blue liquid dye packs (15 g ₹236.00, 50 g ₹472.00, 100 g ₹900.00)

2 g per kg of wax 327.0 g 3 × 100 g (₹900.00) + 1 × 50 g (₹472.00) ₹3,172.00

Do the same for the yellow chips: count or weigh what you used per kilo in the approved test and multiply by the order's wax. Chip pack weights aren't in our data, so ask on WhatsApp how many packs that comes to. Then mix colour in a fixed weight of wax per batch, always the same, so batch twelve matches batch one. Keeping colour identical across batches covers that in detail.

Custom-colour orders for Diwali (8 November 2026) and the November–February wedding season need the colour proven before the jars are ordered — and the dyes you need confirmed in stock. Message us with the colour brief and the jar; we'll tell you what's in stock to build it and confirm jar quantities. No volume discount figure is published.
Check dye and jar stock

The quantities side of a custom order is covered elsewhere in the cluster: costing the first quote, inventory before production for 500 pieces, the full bill of materials for 5,000 in one jar and kilograms of fragrance for a one-scent order. If the colour is part of a wedding brief, extra oil for a custom wedding scent applies too, and materials with the longest lead times helps when a dye you need is out of stock.

Approve the colour in the jar it will live in. Then buy a thousand of that jar.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The convenient advice for us would be to order your 1,000 jars and a big bottle of dye today. This page says to buy a 5-pack and 15 g of dye first, and it states plainly which dyes are out of stock rather than implying we can supply any colour.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026; jar and dye prices and stock are from the catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026; wick and centering-device prices are the Blog 760 figures verified 10 September 2026. Pack combinations use in-stock sizes only.

The 170 g fill, 8% load, 15 test candles and 3% allowance are working assumptions. Dye doses, chip pack weights and wick sizing per diameter are not in our data — the dose table is arithmetic on example figures, not advice. For dye availability, jar stock, a quote, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

should I buy candle jars before testing colour
Buy a 5-pack of the jar model first and do all colour, scent and wick testing in it. Order the bulk jars after the client approves a finished sample. The jar affects how the colour reads and what wick works.
does candle dye affect the wick
It can. In general practice, dyes, fragrance and load can each change the flame and melt pool. Confirm the wick last, with a burn test of the finished coloured and scented formula in the real jar.
how to make green candle dye without green dye
Blend blue and yellow, then adjust toward sage with a little brown or black, testing in weighed steps. On the pull date CSI's green liquid, green chips and yellow liquid are out of stock; blue liquid and yellow chips are in stock.
how much dye for 1000 candles
Record your approved test dose in grams per kilogram of wax and multiply by the order's wax — 163.5 kg in our example. Dye doses aren't in our data; follow the dye's product page and your test.
does fragrance oil change candle colour
Some oils carry their own tint, and it can shift a dyed shade. Pour colour tests with the fragrance already in at the production load, not in plain wax.
can you see candle colour in a white matte jar
Only on the top surface. For a colour that should be seen from the side, use a clear jar such as the 200 ml Salsa or the Yankee 130 ml.
Prove it in five jars
Jar model first. Wax, scent, colour. Wick last. Then a thousand jars.
