Production Calculator · Order Increase After Purchase
The couple has added 250 guests and you have already bought for 500. The instinct is to buy another 50% of everything. That overbuys, because your first order was rounded up to packs and already holds part of the increase. This page works out the true top-up, line by line.

top-up for a 500 → 750 increase in 85 g tins at 8% Neroli · 1,831.18 g oil, 20.95 kg wax, 254 tins, 274 wicks before rounding · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate the extra material when an order increases? Recalculate the whole order at the new quantity, with its allowances, then subtract what you bought (not what you originally needed). The difference is the top-up. Leftovers from your first pack rounding count in your favour.

What is the top-up for 500 → 750 tins? Oil 1,831.18 g → 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g Neroli. Wax 20,953.52 g → 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg. Tins 254 → 22 packs of 12. Wicks 274 → 280. Total ₹34,472.56.

Do I need new test candles? Not for the same wax, oil, tin and wick: the formula is already approved. If the top-up oil comes from a new bottle, pour one tin from it and compare it with a retained sample before you pour the extra 250. We have kept the original six tests and added none.

What if I have already poured some candles? The answer is the same. Count what is on the shelf now, work out what is still to be poured for 750, and buy the difference. With 300 already poured the top-up comes out identical. See the stock-count method.
The short answer
Rule: Top-up = (new total need with allowances) − (total bought). Never (new need) − (old need), and never 50% of the old order.
Per tin: 85 g at 8% = 6.8 g Neroli + 78.2 g wax. The tin's fill is published at 85 g.
Top-up: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g Neroli · 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg wax · 22 × 12 tins · 280 wicks = ₹34,472.56.

Dark = already bought for 500. White = the top-up to buy now. Top-up: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g Neroli · 21.00 kg wax · 264 tins · 280 wicks · ₹34,472.56
Each bar is the full 750-order requirement for one material, including 5% backups, the six original test tins and 3% pour loss (working assumptions). The dark part is what you already bought for 500, rounded up to packs. It already covers about two-thirds of each bar: the first 500 favours, all six test tins, and the small spare left by rounding up to packs. The top-up is only the white remainder.
Straight answer
A wedding client increased their order from 500 to 750 candles after I purchased raw materials. How do I calculate the additional wax, fragrance, wick and jar requirement?
Do not calculate the extra 250 on their own, and do not buy another half of everything. Recalculate the whole order at 750, with the same allowances, and subtract what you actually bought for 500. In our example the favours are 85 g Golden Aluminium Tins in Neroli at 8%: 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax each. For 500 you planned 531 tins (25 backups and 6 tests) and bought 3 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g of Neroli (3,730 g), 43.00 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 540 tins and 560 wicks. At 750 you need 794 tins: 750, plus 38 backups (5% of 750, not 5% of 250 added to the old 25), plus the same 6 tests, which are already done. With 3% loss that is 5,561.18 g of oil and 63,953.52 g of wax. Subtract what you bought and the top-up is 1,831.18 g of Neroli, 20,953.52 g of wax, 254 tins and 274 wicks. Rounded to packs: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of Neroli, 4 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg of wax, 22 packs of tins and 280 wicks, ₹34,472.56. If you have already poured some favours, the answer is the same, as long as you count what is on the shelf now against what is still to be poured.
One line: new total need minus total bought — the rounding you paid for last time is part of this time's answer.
The top-up oil should be the same Neroli you used for the first 500: 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, ₹12,321.56. Neroli is ₹6.66 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg alike, so round with whatever sizes leave the least over. Ask us to confirm stock before you tell the client yes.
Buy Neroli

What you planned and bought for 500

The first step of a top-up is not arithmetic. It is finding the order you actually placed.

Here is the example. The couple ordered 500 favours in the Golden Aluminium Tin, filled to its published 85 g, scented with Neroli at 8%. Each tin holds 6.80 g of oil and 78.20 g of wax. You planned 5% backups (25 tins) and 6 test tins, so 531 poured, and added 3% for pour loss. Then you rounded to packs and bought.

Total ₹70,121.24

The column that matters for a top-up is the fifth one. Every line was rounded up to packs, so you already hold a little more than 500 needed: a few grams of oil, a couple of hundred grams of wax, nine spare tins, two spare wicks. That spare is not waste. It is the first part of your top-up, already paid for.

Keep the purchase record with the job
Write the packs you bought, not just the quantities you calculated, on the job sheet. A top-up is worked from what was bought. If you only kept the calculated figures, you will forget the rounding and overbuy.

The whole order at 750

Now recalculate the entire job at the new quantity, as if it were a fresh order, with two changes that matter. Backups are recalculated on 750: 5% of 750 rounded up is 38, not the old 25 plus 5% of 250. And the 6 test tins stay at 6, because the formula has already been tested and approved. Nothing about the wax, the oil, the tin or the wick has changed.

Same formula, same allowances · only the order quantity changes
500 against 750
Line Order of 500 Order of 750 Difference
Ordered 500 750 +250

Wax with 3% loss 42,769.93 g 63,953.52 g +21,183.60 g
Wicks with 5% spare 558 834 +276

The last column is the need difference. It is not what you buy, because it ignores what you already hold from rounding. It is useful as a sanity check: the top-up should come out a little below it on every line.

The top-up, line by line

Top-up = what 750 needs − what you bought for 500. Nothing more complicated than that, once per line.

Top-up total ₹34,472.56

Across the whole job you will have spent ₹1,04,593.80 on materials for 750 favours, about ₹139.46 per delivered tin. One finished tin costs ₹45.26 of Neroli at the 1 kg rate, ₹46.84 of wax, ₹30.00 for the tin and ₹5.90 for the wick: ₹128.00 before labour, lids, labels, packaging, freight and GST. When you re-quote the couple for 750, the per-unit figure is the one to use; the increase is not cheaper to make per favour just because the tests are already paid for.

On wax, the 5 kg Chunks bag (₹2,995.00, ₹599.00 a kilo) is fractionally cheaper per kilo than the 10 kg (₹5,999.00, ₹599.90), so the top-up uses 5 kg bags. On oil, Neroli is priced flat at ₹6.66 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg, so the top-up combines sizes to land just above the need. Its 15 g is ₹7.87 a gram and its 50 g ₹6.84.

Three wrong ways to top up

Oil and wax only · same example · before rounding to packs
The right top-up and three common shortcuts
Method Neroli Wax Against the right answer What went wrong
Right: need at 750 − bought 1,831.18 g 20,953.52 g — Uses the whole-job need and credits rounding leftovers
Buy half as much again 1,865 g 21,500 g +33.82 g oil · +546.48 g wax Repeats the first order's tests, backups and rounding
Price the extra 250 as a new order 1,884.08 g 21,666.87 g +52.90 g oil · +713.35 g wax Adds 6 new tests and ignores leftovers
Need at 750 − need at 500 1,842.05 g 21,183.60 g +10.88 g oil · +230.07 g wax Right idea, but forgets what the rounding already bought

None of the wrong methods is dramatic on its own. Each adds some grams of oil and some hundreds of grams of wax. After rounding to packs, the difference can be a whole extra bottle or bag. On a wedding order with a tight margin, that extra bottle is often most of the profit on the increase.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The shortcut we would most like you to take is "buy half as much again": it sells more oil and more wax. It is also inaccurate, because it repeats your first order's test tins and rounding as if they had to be bought again. Work the top-up properly and buy only what the increase needs.
The backups that multiply. A maker keeps the original 25 backups and adds 5% of the extra 250 (13), for 38. Here that happens to match 38. Another maker adds a fresh 5% to the whole 750 on top of the original 25, for 63. That is double-counting. Recalculate the backup once, on the new total.

If you have already started pouring

Midway through production, stop working from the purchase record and count the shelf.

Suppose the increase arrives after you have poured the 6 test tins and the first 300 favours. The purchase record no longer tells you what you hold, because some of it is now in tins. Instead, count or weigh what is left and compare it with what is still to be poured. Here the remaining pour is 794 − 306 = 488 tins. We assume the first 306 used exactly the planned 3% loss; in practice, weigh what is left.

After pouring 306 tins (6 tests + 300 favours) · on-hand figures assume the planned 3% loss
Stock-count method: on hand against still to pour
Material On hand now Still needed for 488 tins Top-up need
Neroli 1,586.78 g 3,417.95 g 1,831.18 g
Wax 18,352.92 g 39,306.45 g 20,953.52 g
Tins 234 tins 488 tins 254 tins
Wicks 238 wicks 512 wicks 274 wicks

The top-up comes out the same as before, and it should. Material poured into tins has moved from the "on hand" column to finished stock, and the "still needed" column has shrunk by exactly the same amount. The stock-count method has one advantage over the purchase record: it catches losses you did not plan. If the jug and bench took 5% instead of 3%, your weighed on-hand figure will be lower and your top-up correctly larger.

1
Stop and weighWeigh every open and unopened container of Neroli and wax. Count tins and wicks. Write the figures down with the date.
2
Count finished stockHow many good favours, how many backups already poured, how many rejects. Rejects that will be remelted go back into the wax count only if you remelt them.
3
Work out the remaining pourNew total poured (794) minus tins already poured, good or backup.
4
Multiply out what the remaining pour needsRemaining tins × 6.8 g oil × 1.03, × 78.2 g wax × 1.03, plus tins and wicks.
5
Subtract on-hand, round up to packsBuy the difference in the same oil and wax. Confirm stock before you confirm the increase with the client.

Keeping 750 favours identical

The arithmetic is only half of a top-up. The guests at table 70 get favours poured from the second purchase, and they should smell and look the same as table 1. Three habits help.

Same product, confirmed. Order the same Neroli listing and the same wax, and say on WhatsApp that it is a top-up for a running order. CSI does not publish lot-to-lot data, so if matching matters, ask. Blend the old and the new. A common practice is to combine what is left of the first oil with the new bottle in one closed container before pouring the rest, so the final 450 tins all come from one mix. Compare against a retained sample. Pour one tin from the new stock, cure it alongside a retained tin from the first batch, and compare them before committing the remaining pour.

The CSI principle
Recalculate the whole, subtract what you have, buy the gap.
An order increase is never a new order and never a percentage of the old one. The whole job at the new size, minus everything already bought or on the shelf, is the top-up. Every leftover you paid for last time reduces what you pay for now.
Wedding numbers often grow in the last weeks, and the November–February season overlaps with Diwali demand on 8 November 2026. If a client has increased an order, send us the top-up list and we will confirm the same Neroli, wax and tins are in stock before you say yes.
Confirm my top-up stock

If the client has only said the order might grow, the decision is different: whether to buy ahead or wait. My Client May Increase a 1,000-Candle Order by 20% at the Last Minute — Should I Buy Additional Raw Materials Now or Wait for Confirmation? works through that for a possible 20% increase on 1,000 candles. For the original four-material calculation, see the hub, 300 × 80 g wedding order. If the increase also adds a scent, give it its own line as in I Have a 500-Candle Wedding Order Split Between 200 Lavender, 200 Rose and 100 Oud — How Much of Each Fragrance Should I Buy at 8% Load?.

The client added 250 guests. You add what 750 needs, less what 500 already bought. The difference is smaller than it looks, and that is your margin.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. When a customer's order grows, the easy sale for us is another half of everything. This page shows why that overbuys and gives you the method that credits what you already hold.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and tin prices are CSI listings verified on 10 September 2026 and re-checked in the 24–25 September pull. All figures are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The 5% backups, six test tins, 3% pour loss and 5% extra wicks are working assumptions. The mid-production table assumes the planned 3% loss; weigh your actual stock. CSI does not publish lot-to-lot data. For stock confirmation on a top-up, bulk quotes, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate extra raw material when a candle order increases?
Recalculate the whole order at the new quantity with the same allowances, then subtract everything you have already bought (or, mid-production, everything on hand plus what is already poured). Round the difference up to packs.
Do I need new test candles when an order increases?
Not if the wax, oil, container and wick are unchanged and already approved. Do pour one candle from any new oil or wax stock and compare it with a retained sample before you pour the rest.
How much fragrance oil for an 85 g candle at 8%?
6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax. 1 kg of oil scents about 147 tins of 85 g at 8%, before test candles and pour loss.
Should backups be recalculated when an order goes up?
Yes, on the new total, once. At 5%, 750 needs 38 backups. Do not keep the old backups and add a fresh percentage of the new total on top.
Can I mix fragrance oil from two different purchases?
It is common practice to combine the remainder of the first bottle with the new one in a clean, closed container before pouring, so the rest of the run is uniform. CSI does not publish lot data; ask on WhatsApp if matching is critical, and compare against a retained sample.
How many golden aluminium tins come in a pack?
Twelve, for ₹360.00 (₹30.00 a tin). The listing gives an 85 g fill weight.
