The hamper hierarchy, and what each tier actually needs

Indian wedding gifting is stratified, and the family already knows the strata even if the brief does not spell them out. There is an inner circle of perhaps ten to thirty households — parents' siblings, the people who funded or hosted something, the family that travelled from abroad. There is a wider VIP list of fifty to a hundred and fifty. There is a business or corporate list, which behaves entirely differently because those hampers are a relationship expense and often need to look uniform and unbranded. And there is the bridal party, which is smaller, younger, and the only tier where a fashion-forward scent lands better than a ceremonial one.

Each tier tolerates a different unit cost, and — more usefully — each tier wants a different candle format. The inner circle can carry a 300g candle in a heavy lidded jar because the hamper it sits in is already large. A corporate hamper is usually a compact box, so a 200g candle in a slim amber jar packs better and costs less to freight. The bridal party hamper is often the smallest box in the run and the one most likely to be photographed, which argues for the most distinctive scent in the set.

If the same client is also ordering favours for the reception, keep the two briefs entirely separate. The twelve luxury oils, with cost per 200g and 300g candle

All prices are CSI live pricing, August 2026. Cost-per-candle figures use kilogram pricing at an 8% fragrance load, which is 16g of oil in a 200g candle and 24g in a 300g candle. Where an oil has no 500g pack, the table says so rather than inventing one.

The spread from the cheapest to the most expensive oil on this list is ₹150 per 200g candle. On a tier of thirty inner-circle hampers that is a difference of ₹4,500 across the whole run — which is to say almost nothing. This is the single most important economic fact about hamper candles, and it is the opposite of the favour maths, where ₹20 per unit across 500 units decides whether the job is worth taking.

Between those three, the rest of the list fills specific gaps. Midnight Bakhoor Royale and Sultan's Smoke both sit at ₹7,999 per kilogram and give you smoke and incense weight when a client wants something more dramatic than sandalwood. Smoked Rose Royale is the one floral that survives this brief, because the smoke stops it reading as a bathroom candle. Saffron Cedarwood at ₹696 per 100g is the cleverest budget choice, since saffron carries obvious wedding symbolism at woody-oil pricing. Santal Noir and White Royal Oud are the two most modern-smelling options and the ones to give a bridal party. Dark Vanilla Oud is the only near-gourmand we would allow in a hamper, and only because the oud dries the vanilla out — at ₹5,691 per kilogram it is also the cheapest entry to the register.

Full cost build: 200g and 300g in a premium vessel

Here is every line, named and priced, so you can substitute your own vessel and recalculate. Wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 per 10kg, which is roughly ₹0.60 per gram. Wicks are Eco Candle Wicks: Thin (C1) at ₹590 per 100 for the 200g jar, Thick (C2) at ₹944 per 100 for the wider 300g jar. Both builds include a wick sticker at ₹236 per 100 and a candle care sticker at ₹413 per 500, both of which are non-negotiable on a gift candle.

Swap the vessel and everything moves. The Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹236 per pack of 5 is ₹47.20 each and drops the 200g base from ₹190.09 to ₹166.49, which is where the corporate tier lives. Pairing the scent against what else is in the box

This is the discipline that separates a hamper candle from a candle that happens to be in a hamper. You are not choosing a scent for a room; you are choosing a scent that will spend two to six weeks sealed in a carton with specific other objects, several of which are edible and all of which will absorb some of it. Ask the planner for the full contents list before you commit a single gram of oil.

Cold throw, lids, and the sealed-box problem

In retail, hot throw is the thing you optimise: the customer buys the candle, lights it, and judges it by how the room smells. A hamper inverts that. The recipient's first and often only fragrance experience is the moment the box opens — cold throw, unlit, at room temperature. And long before that moment, the candle has been sitting sealed in a carton in a warehouse and a car boot for anything from a week to six, quietly releasing fragrance into everything around it.

Two practical consequences follow. First, choose oils with genuine cold throw. Heavy, resinous amber and oud molecules perform here; light citrus and airy florals barely register through a lid, which is another reason those registers do not belong in a hamper. Second, and more importantly, the lid is a functional component, not a decorative one. A dome lid resting on a glass rim looks beautiful and seals nothing.

Quantity maths for 50, 100 and 200 hampers

At an 8% load a 200g candle takes 16g of oil and 184g of wax; a 300g candle takes 24g of oil and 276g of wax. Order 10% more wax than the arithmetic says, because pouring losses, the film left in the jug and one or two failed pours are real. Fragrance you can order tight, because a hamper run rarely gets repoured.

Worked example on Sacred Sandal Ember: for 100 hampers at 300g you need 2.4kg, ordered as two kilograms at ₹6,999 each plus a 500g pack at ₹3,999, which is ₹17,997 and leaves 100g spare for the sample the planner will ask for at the last minute. Wax for that run is 27.6kg, so order 30kg at ₹17,988. Add 100 bamboo-lid jars at ₹150 each (₹15,000) and 100 Thick (C2) wicks at ₹944 per 100. The whole materials position for a hundred-hamper tier is roughly ₹51,900, against a ₹1,899 trade price that grosses ₹189,900.

Wax compatibility and load ceilings

Hamper candles are almost always container candles, so the choice sits inside CSI's container range. What changes for hampers is that the finish is inspected closely — the candle is unwrapped slowly, in good light, by someone who has been told it is expensive. Frosting, wet spots and a sunken top all read as defects here in a way they would not on a ₹399 retail candle.

Wick sizing follows jar diameter, not fragrance. A 200g jar generally takes an Eco Thin (C1) and a wider 300g jar an Eco Thick (C2), both from the wick range; test both in your specific vessel before committing 200 units. For the statement tier, a Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30 each in packs of 100 adds a crackle that photographs and films well, which matters when the hamper is being opened on camera. Diwali on 8 November, and why hamper fragrance is ordered now

The Indian wedding peak runs broadly November to February, with a second season across April to June. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, which puts the biggest festive retail week of the year directly on top of the opening weeks of the wedding season. Every candle business in the country is pouring at capacity in that window, and every fragrance supplier is shipping at capacity into it.

Working backwards from a wedding in the first half of November: the hamper needs to be packed and dispatched roughly a week before the function, which means poured and cured through late October, which means fragrance in hand by the first week of October at the absolute latest — and that assumes you have already tested the scent. Add the 14 to 21 day cure that a heavy oud genuinely needs to reach its final character, plus the sample round with the planner, and the honest deadline for deciding your hamper fragrance is late August or early September. That is now.

One more scheduling point specific to hampers: the client will change the box contents after you have chosen the scent. A planner who adds artisanal tea or a chocolate box in week three has just changed your vessel requirement. Build that into the quote by specifying the vessel and a sealed alternative up front, and price the upgrade rather than absorbing it.
