What you cannot tell from a product photo

Put the listing images for six different soy waxes side by side and you will struggle to sort them. Cream to off-white, flakes or pellets or chunks, a matte pouch on a plain background. Nothing in the frame separates a container wax from a pillar wax, a straight soy from a coconut-soy blend, or a batch that holds 10% fragrance from one that holds 13%. This is not a photography problem; it is a category problem. The five properties that decide whether a wax works for you are all specifications rather than appearances.

Grade. "Soy wax" is a family, not a product. Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399/kg, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599/kg are three different grades in the same family at three different prices, and the photograph will not tell you which is which. A listing that says only "soy wax" is withholding the one fact you need.

Melt point. You cannot see it, and it governs how the wax behaves in a Chennai workshop in May versus a Shimla one in January, whether it holds a moulded shape, and whether it slumps in a shipping box. Container waxes and pillar waxes are different materials for this reason, which is why Soy Pillar Wax exists as a separate product at ₹300 for 500g rather than being the same bag with a different label.

Intended application. Container, pillar, mould, tealight, wax melt, gel. Pouring a container wax into a pillar mould produces something that will not release cleanly; pouring a pillar wax into a glass jar produces poor glass adhesion and a candle that looks wet. Gel Wax Clear at ₹590/kg and Microcrystalline Wax Slab at ₹299/kg are not substitutes for either. The application belongs in the product title, and on CSI it is — the listings are named for what they are for.

Fragrance ceiling. The maximum quantity of oil that wax has been formulated to hold in solution, stated by the wax manufacturer. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated up to 10%. Those are formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and they are not interchangeable. If you build a signature scent at 12% on a wax rated to 10%, the surplus will not bind — and no photograph will warn you.

Additive content. Some waxes on the wider Indian market are blends or come pre-dosed with hardeners, which changes how much Vybar you would add yourself, how the surface finishes and how the wax takes dye. A listing that does not say is asking you to find out by pouring.

The listing checklist, before you add to cart

Since you cannot inspect the material, inspect the listing. Six things. A listing carrying all six is one you can buy from without handling the product; a listing missing three of them is asking you to carry a risk the seller should have removed.

On point four, the arithmetic is worth doing yourself rather than trusting a "bulk saving" badge. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹450 for 1kg and ₹2,124 for 5kg — ₹424.80 per kilogram, a genuine 5.6% saving. Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹399 for 1kg and ₹1,996 for 5kg, which is ₹399.20 per kilogram — effectively no saving at all. Both are honest prices. Only one of them is a reason to buy five times as much.

Point six is the one most Indian listings skip, and it is the difference between a repeatable batch and a hopeful one. CSI publishes the working bands: Eco Soy CSI 400 specifies adding fragrance at 80–90°C with two minutes of stirring, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Those two numbers plus a pen thermometer at ₹354 turn "it came out different this time" into a variable you can actually control.

Buy the test pack first — it costs less than the jars

This is the whole argument of the page, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion. Every wax CSI sells starts at 500g or 1kg. That is deliberate. It exists so that the first money you spend on an unfamiliar wax is money you can afford to write off.

Read the right-hand column again. On five of these eight waxes, buying a 1kg test pack costs you nothing per kilogram compared with buying ten times as much. The bulk discount most makers imagine they are forfeiting by testing first does not, in most cases, exist. The only material savings on the list are Natural Soy Pearl Wax at 5.6% and Coconut Soy CSI 468 at 2%, and neither is worth ₹4,000 of unusable wax.

Structure the test properly and it pays for itself. One kilogram fills roughly six 150g jars. Pour them as three pairs: one pair at your intended fragrance load, one pair two percentage points below, one pair with a wick size up. Label them, cure for fourteen days, then burn all six on the same afternoon in the same room. That is a real answer about a real wax in your real vessel, for ₹920.40 including jars and wicks.

What to check when the parcel arrives

The second half of buying wax online happens after the courier leaves. Five minutes with the box, before you open the bag, is the entire window in which a supplier can reasonably be asked to do something about a problem.

Freight, GST, and when buying locally beats ordering online

Wax is heavy and cheap per kilogram, the worst possible combination for freight. A 10kg sack of CSI 464 at ₹5,074 weighs ten kilograms; a ₹5,026.80 kilogram of Sandalwood fragrance oil weighs one. The courier charges by the former. This is physics, not a CSI quirk, and it applies to every wax seller in India.

Our own customers have said so publicly, on our own product pages, and it would be dishonest to print the five-star reviews and hide the rest of the sentence. Hope to get some discount in future for bulk buys". Those are real reviews from real customers and they are all still published.

The practical response is consolidation. Freight is largely a function of shipments, not line items, so four small orders spread across a month cost far more in delivery than one consolidated order placed on the first of it. If you are already ordering wax, add the wicks, the jars, the fragrance oils and the packaging to the same cart. This is the single largest lever you have over your delivered cost per candle, and it is the honest reason single-supplier buying is worth considering — set out in can I buy all my candle making materials from one supplier. For large or repeat consignments, ask on WhatsApp before checkout rather than after.

Now the case against ordering online, because there is one. Freight is charged on weight, so the cheaper the wax per kilogram, the worse online buying looks. Semi Refined Paraffin Wax is ₹220 per kilogram — the cheapest wax on our list. On a material at that price, delivery can be a serious fraction of what you pay. If you are in a city with a genuine chemical or candle-supply market and you need commodity paraffin, buy it there. Carry it home, pay nothing for freight, and inspect it with your hands before money changes hands. The same applies if you need 2kg of anything tomorrow morning to finish an order — no courier competes with a market you can walk to.

Where online wins is specification and repeatability. A market seller rarely tells you the grade, almost never publishes a fragrance ceiling, and cannot promise that next month's sack is this month's material. A named product handle with a published ceiling, a stated application and a printed invoice is something you can reorder with confidence a year later. For a business that consistency is usually worth more than the freight line — but decide it per material rather than assuming online is automatically right.
