Fully refined vs semi refined: what the word is actually describing

Paraffin wax is separated out of crude petroleum during refining, and the stage that matters to a candle maker is de-oiling — the removal of the residual oil left in the wax when it first comes off the process. "Fully refined" means more of that oil has been taken out. "Semi refined" means more has been left in. Everything else you notice about the two grades follows from that one difference, and once you know it you can predict how a batch will behave before you melt it.

More residual oil makes a wax softer, warmer in colour and more inclined to move. Semi refined paraffin reads off-white or faintly cream rather than bright white, takes a thumbnail more easily, is more likely to mottle, and carries a little more character of its own in the melt — which matters if your fragrance is delicate. Fully refined paraffin goes the other way: whiter, harder, more consistent between batches, and closer to neutral in the pot, which is what you want under an expensive oil.

The cost gap against soy, worked out properly

CSI sells more soy than paraffin and would rather you bought soy, which is why this section is arithmetic rather than persuasion. Every figure uses the wax's 1 kg variant price divided by 1,000, multiplied by the fill weight — no jar, wick, fragrance, dye or packaging. At a ₹400 retail price that is roughly 13% of the ticket moving between your cost sheet and your margin.

Where paraffin genuinely wins

Cost is the headline, but it is not the only reason to reach for paraffin, and a maker who dismisses it on principle is giving away four or five real advantages as well as the money.

Where soy wins, stated just as plainly

The honest case for soy is not chemical, it is commercial — and it is strong enough that CSI sells far more soy than paraffin. Here is where the extra ₹28.22 to ₹69.74 per candle is worth paying.

Market perception. In the Indian premium and gifting market, "soy wax candle" is a category label customers search for, marketplaces filter by and corporate buyers write into the brief. If your listings and product cards already carry the word, switching the wax underneath while keeping the word is not a cost saving, it is a misrepresentation — and the fastest way to lose a customer permanently. Change the wax and change the copy, or keep the wax.

Natural-wax positioning. Many Indian candle brands are built entirely on the natural-wax story, and that positioning is what supports a four-figure retail price on a 200 g candle. At ₹1,200 retail, the ₹45.08 difference between fully refined paraffin and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is 3.8% of the selling price — a rounding error against a brand story doing the actual pricing work. Cutting it would be the worst trade in the business.

A softer look. Soy gives a creamier, more matte surface and a gentler top. Frosting and slightly uneven tops, which a paraffin maker treats as defects, read as evidence of handmade production in a soy range. Paraffin's harder, more even, more commercial finish is an advantage in a moulded pillar and a disadvantage in a ₹1,200 artisanal jar candle.
