The instinctive response to a weak candle is to add more fragrance oil. That is step five treated as step one — a fix for the least likely cause, applied before the four likely ones have been ruled out, and one that frequently makes the candle worse.

Yes — and it is the single most useful correction in candle troubleshooting, because the instinct when a candle is quiet is to add more oil. Wax binds a finite quantity of fragrance. It separates — sweating to the surface as an oily film or beads, or settling at the base of the vessel — where it is not in the melt pool and therefore cannot evaporate. It is scent you paid for and cannot smell. Then it does active harm: free oil saturates the wick, clogging the capillary path so the flame runs small and cool. A small, cool flame makes a shallow melt pool, and the melt pool is the entire engine of hot throw. Less pool, less surface area, lower temperature, less fragrance released. Add sooting, tunnelling and a wick that drowns or gutters out, and the result is a candle that cost more per unit and smells weaker than one poured at a disciplined 8%. Fix the cure, wick, load and temperature in that order before you touch the oil.

Why more oil throws less: four mechanisms

Fragrance load is not a volume dial. Past a certain point you are no longer adding scent to the candle — you are adding a contaminant to the fuel.

The intuition that more oil equals more scent holds perfectly well up to a point, and then it stops holding and reverses. Understanding why it reverses is what stops a maker from chasing the problem in the wrong direction for six months. There are four separate mechanisms at work, and in a genuinely over-loaded candle all four are usually running at once.

1. The wax has a binding ceiling, and above it the oil simply leaves

Soy wax holds fragrance oil in solution the way water holds sugar. Below saturation the oil is dispersed evenly through the wax matrix and is carried up into the melt pool as the candle burns, where it evaporates and fills the room. Above saturation there is nowhere for the surplus to go. It phase-separates. In a cured candle you see this as a sheen on the surface, small beads of oil, a wet or greasy look to what should be a matte soy top, or a visible layer of oil sitting at the bottom of the jar under the wax.

The important consequence is not cosmetic. Separated oil is outside the working system. It is not in the melt pool, it is not being carried by the wick, and it is not evaporating into the room at any useful rate. You bought it, you weighed it, you paid for it, and it contributes nothing to hot throw. Every gram above the ceiling is close to pure waste.

2. Free oil clogs the wick and chokes the flame

A wick works by capillary action, drawing liquid wax up its braid to the flame, where the wax vaporises and burns. That system is tuned for wax. Feed it a wick-length soaked in free fragrance oil and the capillary path fouls: the braid carries oil it cannot burn cleanly, the flame drops, and the wick may drown outright in its own pool. In practice you see a flame that is small and lazy, a wick that needs relighting, a mushrooming carbon head, and black soot on the jar wall or the ceiling above the candle. In the worst cases the candle simply extinguishes itself an hour into a burn.

This is why over-loading is so often misdiagnosed as a wicking problem. The maker sizes up to a thicker Eco Candle Wick, gets a hotter flame, gets more soot, and concludes that the jar is wrong. The jar is fine. The fuel is contaminated.

3. A choked wick makes a smaller, cooler melt pool — and the pool is the engine

This is the mechanism that closes the loop and makes the whole thing counter-intuitive. Hot throw is a function of the melt pool: its surface area and its temperature. A full pool that reaches the jar wall presents the maximum area of scented liquid wax to the room, at the temperature the wick's flame sustains. Shrink the pool and you shrink the evaporating surface. Cool it and you slow the rate at which fragrance molecules leave that surface.

So the chain runs: too much oil → oil separates and fouls the wick → flame runs small and cool → melt pool is shallow and narrow → less fragrance is released per hour than a correctly loaded candle with a healthy pool. The extra oil did not just fail to help. It actively suppressed the mechanism that would have delivered the scent you already had. Tunnelling makes it worse still, because a tunnelled candle never reaches the wall and the un-melted ring of wax around the edge holds fragrance that will never be released at all.

4. The fuel balance changes, because oil does not burn like wax

A candle is a fuel system. Wax has a known melting behaviour and a known burn rate; fragrance oil has different volatility, a different flash point and different combustion behaviour. A candle at 8% is a wax candle with a scent in it. A candle at 15% is meaningfully a different fuel, and it burns differently — unpredictable flame height, guttering, faster or uneven consumption, more soot, and in some formulations a genuine safety concern. This is precisely why every reputable wax carries a stated maximum load, and why treating that number as a suggestion rather than a limit is a false economy.

The signature to remember: strong cold, weak hot. An over-loaded candle usually smells excellent in the jar unlit, because separated surface oil is evaporating straight off the top with nothing in its way. Light it and the room stays quiet. If your candle sells beautifully on the shelf and disappoints on the shelf at home, over-loading is the first thing to test — not the last.

The ceilings: what CSI wax can actually hold

There is no single universal fragrance ceiling, and any guide that gives you one number is guessing. The limit is a property of the specific wax you bought. Here are the figures CSI states on its own product pages, alongside where the sensible working load sits.

Two things follow from that table. First, the same recipe is not portable between waxes. A 12% pour that behaves acceptably in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is two full percentage points over the ceiling in CSI 464, and a maker switching wax without recalculating will suddenly find sweating jars and drowning wicks in a batch that worked last month. Second, a ceiling is a maximum tested tolerance, not a recommendation. Working permanently at the ceiling gives you no margin for a heavy oil, a warm workshop, or a scale that reads 1g optimistic.

The rule
Calculate the load against the finished candle weight, not the wax weight. A 200g candle at 8% is 16g of oil and 184g of wax — not 200g of wax plus 16g of oil, which is actually a 7.4% candle weighing 216g. That single arithmetic slip is why so many makers believe their percentages and still get inconsistent results.

What over-dosing actually costs

The strongest argument against reflexively raising the load is not chemical, it is financial. Moving a 200g candle from 8% to 12% adds 8g of fragrance oil per candle — and removes 8g of wax, which is far cheaper. On a single test pour that is invisible. Across a production run it is a line item that shows up in your bank balance.

Fragrance load is the most expensive variable in the candle and the least likely cause of weak throw. Test it last, not first.
Cure costs nothing to fix. A wick change costs ₹5.90. Adjusting your pour temperature costs nothing. Raising the load from 8% to 12% costs ₹20,108 across a 500-candle run — and if the wax is already saturated, it buys you a weaker candle. Exhaust the free fixes before you spend.

Over-loaded or under-loaded? The diagnostic

These two faults produce the same complaint — "my candle doesn't smell strong enough" — and require opposite corrections, which is why they are worth separating carefully before you change anything. The distinction is almost always visible before it is smellable. Look at the candle first.

The row that does most of the work is the cold-versus-hot comparison. An under-loaded candle is quiet in both states — faint in the jar, faint in the room, consistent and undramatic. An over-loaded candle is loud closed and silent lit, and that gap between the two is the fingerprint. If a customer tells you the candle smelled amazing when they opened it and disappeared once lit, you are not looking at a weak fragrance oil. You are looking at oil that never made it into the melt pool.

Do not diagnose an over-loaded candle by weight alone. Makers who pour by eye or top up "a splash more" mid-batch routinely believe they are at 8% when a scale says 11–12%. Before any diagnosis, weigh one candle's inputs properly on a candle making weighing scale and calculate the real percentage against finished weight. Roughly half of suspected over-loads turn out to be measurement drift rather than a deliberate recipe.

The correct fix sequence for a weak candle

Order matters more than any individual step. Work top to bottom and stop at the first thing that is wrong — most weak candles are resolved in the first two steps, and both are free.

Check the cureSoy container candles need 14 days minimum, and heavy oriental and gourmand oils frequently keep improving to 21. A candle judged at 48 hours is not weak, it is unfinished — the fragrance has not fully bound into the wax matrix yet. Cure lids on, in a closed box, at room temperature, away from sunlight. Check the wick and the melt poolBurn a cured candle for three hours in a closed room of realistic size. The melt pool must reach the jar wall within two to three hours. If it does not, the wick is undersized for the jar diameter and no fragrance load will rescue it — a small pool is a small evaporating surface. The commonest way to waste a fortnight is to raise the load, change the wick and switch jars in the same batch. The 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 test: find where returns stop

Every fragrance oil has a point where additional load stops buying additional throw, and that point differs by oil. Guessing it is expensive; measuring it takes one afternoon and four jars. Run this once per scent and you will never argue with yourself about load again.

Pour four 200g candles of the same oil, same wax, same jar, same wick, varying only the load: 12g at 6%, 16g at 8%, 20g at 10%, 24g at 12%. Cure all four for the full 14 days, then judge them in a closed room of about 12 x 12 feet, one at a time, with at least an hour between candles so your nose resets. Score cold throw before lighting, then hot throw at 30 minutes and again at 120 minutes. Note the melt pool diameter and depth at both points, and inspect each cured surface in raking light for sheen or beads.

Read the result honestly. The useful load is the lowest one that delivers the throw you want, not the highest one that does not visibly fail. If B and C perform identically across a room, pour at B and keep the ₹20.11 per candle. If D is weaker than C, you have found the ceiling for that oil in that wax and it sits below the wax's rated maximum — which is normal, and exactly the information the test exists to produce. Some oils plateau at 7%; a few genuinely reward 10%. The oils that do most with least are worth knowing: see which fragrance oils produce strong throw at a lower load.

Where over-dosing hurts most
Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
A heavy gourmand with genuinely excellent hot throw in soy, which makes it the worst possible candidate for a raised load — it rarely needs one, and at ₹7.65 per gram the penalty for adding 8g you did not need is ₹61.17 a candle. Vanillas also contain vanillin, which oxidises and can turn white soy cream or pale brown; over-loading accelerates the surface sheen that makes that discolouration look worse. Can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker?
Yes, and it is one of the most common self-inflicted faults in candle making. Wax can only bind a finite quantity of fragrance oil. Above that ceiling the excess does not disperse, it separates, sweating to the surface or settling at the bottom of the jar where it is not in the melt pool and cannot evaporate. Worse, that free oil saturates the wick and clogs its capillary path, which shrinks and cools the melt pool. A smaller, cooler pool releases less fragrance, so the candle that cost more to make smells weaker than one poured at a sensible load.
What happens if you add more fragrance oil than the wax can hold?
Four things, usually together. The excess oil separates out and shows as an oily film, beads or a wet-looking surface, or pools at the base of the vessel. The wick draws oil instead of clean wax, drowns or burns with a small weak flame, and often smokes and soots. The melt pool stays shallow and cool, so fragrance evaporation drops.
