At a thousand candles a month you are no longer buying materials. You are running a bill of materials, a batch record and a cure room. This is the arithmetic — wax, oil, wicks, jars, melter capacity, shelf space and the documentation that makes any of it repeatable.

Quick answers — read this first
What changes above 1,000 candles a month? Price stops being the constraint and repeatability becomes it. A 2% failure rate that cost you two candles at 100 units a month now costs you 20 candles, and you cannot fix a fault you did not record.
What do I actually need to buy each month? For 1,000 × 200 g candles at a 10% load: 180 kg of wax, 20 kg of fragrance oil, 1,000 wicks and 1,000 jars — about ₹230,467 at CSI pricing, or roughly ₹230 of material per candle.
What stops most makers first? Not supply. Cure space. A 14–21 day cure at 1,000 units a month means holding around 700 finished candles on shelves at all times — about a month of stock and ₹161,327 of material doing nothing.
What separates a manufacturer from a maker? The batch record: a documented recipe per SKU with wax batch, oil batch, load in grams, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, ambient, vessel, wick, cure dates and burn test. Without it you cannot diagnose a bad batch or reproduce a good one.
The short answer
Buy to a bill of materials, not a shopping list. At 1,000 units: 18 × 10 kg of CSI 464, 20 kg of fragrance, one 1,000 pack of Eco Candle Wicks, ten 100 packs of salsa jars.
Write a batch record for every SKU, filled at the bench and not from memory. Thirteen fields, one page per pour. It is the only thing that traces a bad batch back to a cause.
Plan the cure room before the order. 700 units standing at 1,000/month, 3,500 at 5,000/month — about 1.5 and 7.3 five-shelf racks. Most makers hit this before any supply limit.
The bill scales linearly and so does the per-candle cost — about ₹230 of material in every 200 g candle at all three volumes. What does not scale linearly is melter cycles, cure shelving and the cost of a mistake. Doubling output doubles the rupees; it more than doubles the consequences of an undocumented recipe.
What materials does commercial candle production in India actually require?
The same five inputs a hobbyist buys — wax, fragrance, wick, vessel, label — but bought against a calculated monthly requirement rather than a guess. For 1,000 × 200 g candles at a 10% load that is 180 kg of wax, 20 kg of fragrance oil, 1,000 wicks, 1,000 jars and the consumables around them: 18 × 10 kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹5,074 each, 20 kg of an oil like Sandalwood at ₹5,026.80 per kilogram, a 1,000 pack of Eco Candle Wicks at ₹5,900, ten 100 packs of 200 ml salsa jars at ₹2,950 each, wick stickers and care labels. ₹230,467 a month, ₹230.47 a candle. But the material list is the easy half. The half that decides whether the business survives is the batch record — a documented recipe per SKU, filled in during the pour — plus enough cure shelving to hold roughly a month of finished stock, enough melter capacity to turn 41 kg of wax a day at 5,000 units, and a supplier who can hold grade continuity across months. At this scale you are not buying cheaper. You are buying the same thing again.
One line: above 1,000 units a month, the material list is arithmetic and the real work is the batch record, the cure room and grade continuity from one named supplier.
The one piece of equipment that changes production rather than convenience is the melter. Wax Melter (Imported) 10 kg at ₹21,240 or 20 kg at ₹25,960, and the CSI-listed 20 litre Electric Wax Melter at ₹23,600. A 10 kg charge is 55 candles at 180 g fill.
At a hundred candles a month a bad batch is an afternoon. At a thousand it is a month of margin and a customer who does not reorder.
Most advice for candle makers optimises for the wrong variable: it compares price per kilogram and treats the material bill as the decision. That is correct at 100 candles a month. It stops being correct somewhere between 500 and 1,000, and the changeover is sharp enough that most makers are past it before they notice.
Here is the arithmetic. Suppose a 2% failure rate — candles that sink, tunnel, crack the glass or fail their burn test. At 100 units a month that is two candles; you remake them on a Sunday. At 1,000 units the same 2% is 20 candles and roughly ₹4,609 of material at ₹230.47 each; at 5,000 it is 100 candles and ₹23,047 a month. The failure rate did not change. The consequence of not knowing why did.
The five things that change at once.Batch size — you pour what fits a melter charge, not a jug, fixing your minimum production unit at 55 candles. Melter capacity — 5,000 units a month means turning about 41 kg of wax a working day, the ceiling of one 10 kg unit. Cure space — a month of finished candles needs a room, not a shelf. Storage — 900 kg of wax arrives as 90 bags that must live somewhere dry and cool. And failure cost — the 2% you tolerated becomes a number you have to explain.
What you need is repeatability, a different discipline from craft. A maker produces an excellent candle; a manufacturer produces the same candle in March and in November, from two different bags of wax, with someone who joined last week pouring. A 200 g finished candle poured from Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at a 10% fragrance load — 180 g of wax, 20 g of oil, one wick, one jar, one wick sticker, one care label. CSI 464 states a load of up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%. Those are wax-manufacturer formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and not interchangeable. The batch record — what separates a manufacturer from a maker
This is the most important section on the page and it costs nothing. A batch record is a documented recipe per SKU, filled in at the bench during the pour, not reconstructed afterwards from memory. One page, one batch, thirteen fields. It is the single artefact that makes a bad batch diagnosable and a good batch reproducible.
Consider what happens without one. A customer reports December's candles smell weaker than October's. You have no record of which wax bag December came from, the ambient at the pour, the add temperature, or the cure length. Four explanations, no way to eliminate any. If you change three things and it improves, you have learned nothing you can repeat.

The CSI principle
A maker can make a good candle. A manufacturer can make the same candle again.
Every figure on this page is reproducible arithmetic. The batch record is the only thing that makes your process reproducible, and without it a good month is indistinguishable from luck. It costs a sheet of paper and ninety seconds per pour.
Two cheap tools make the record honest rather than decorative: a candle making weighing scale at ₹354, because load is a weight percentage and millilitres will never be repeatable, and a pen thermometer at ₹354, because "hot enough" is not a number. ₹708 turns guesswork into data.

Freeze one recipe per SKU before you scale itFix the wax, oil, load, vessel and wick, run three consecutive batches unchanged, and burn-test all three. If they agree, that is your recipe. If they do not, you have a candle you once made well — and scaling it only manufactures the variance.

Buy the whole month's wax in one grade, one orderGrade continuity matters more than price here. Splitting 180 kg across two suppliers to save a few hundred rupees adds a variable you then control for on every batch.

Change one variable per batch, never twoAlter the wick, cure length and pour temperature together and an improvement teaches you nothing transferable. Three controlled batches over six weeks teach you more than thirty uncontrolled pours.

What to order, in the pack sizes CSI actually stocks
Three things fall out of that table. First, fragrance is the biggest line — ₹100,536 of ₹230,467 at 1,000 units, or 43.6%, against 39.6% for wax and 12.8% for glass. The oil you choose moves material cost more than any negotiation will: Citrus Lemon at ₹2,832 per kilogram takes that line to ₹56,640 — ₹43,896 saved a month. Second, per-candle material cost is flat across all three volumes at roughly ₹230.47. There is no bulk break above the tier you already reach at 1,000 units: CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at 5 kg and at 10 kg, and Eco Thin C1 wicks are ₹5.90 each at 10 and at 1,000. The savings at scale do not come from the catalogue.
Third, the real levers are input substitutions. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is the only wax CSI stocks in a 50 kg pack, at ₹21,240 (₹424.80/kg): at 5,000 units that turns the 900 kg line from ₹456,660 into ₹382,320, saving ₹74,340 a month and collapsing 90 bags into 18. Mini Glass Jars at ₹2,124 per 100 take glass from ₹147,500 to ₹106,200. Both mean a different fill weight, diameter, wick and re-frozen recipe. Neither is free. Both are worth costing.
Fragrance at 20 kg a month is rarely one oil
The table assumes one scent. In practice 20 kg a month across five scents is 4 kg of each; across twelve it is 1.67 kg — twelve purchases, twelve cure schedules. Range width costs more than range depth. CSI stocks 92 fragrance oils; a working commercial range is six to ten. How much fragrance oil a candle business needs has the arithmetic.
Working back from Diwali on 8 November 2026: a festive run poured in October and cured the full 21 days has to have its wax and fragrance on the shelf by late September. Volume pricing, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation are handled directly.
Nobody scales into a wax shortage. They scale into a room that has run out of shelves.
A soy container candle wants 14 to 21 days of cure before it performs the way it will for the customer — citrus around 14, woody and gourmand oils improving toward 21. That is the wax crystal structure settling, and there is no buying your way out of it. So a business pouring 1,000 candles a month has three weeks of production standing still on a shelf at any moment.
Twenty-one days of a thirty-day month is 70% of output — about 700 finished candles in cure at all times at 1,000 units a month, 1,750 at 2,500 and 3,500 at 5,000. At ₹230.47 of material each that is ₹161,327 of working capital at 1,000 units a month and ₹806,635 at 5,000, sitting on a rack earning nothing.

Seven racks is not a corner of a spare bedroom. Each occupies about 0.54 m² of floor, so with aisles you need eight to ten square metres of dark, temperature-stable space at 5,000 units a month — before finding anywhere for 900 kg of incoming wax and the stock awaiting dispatch. Most makers hit this wall before any supply limit. CSI can ship you 900 kg of wax. CSI cannot ship you a room.
What people do instead, and why it costs them. The usual response to a full cure room is to ship early — seven days instead of twenty-one — because the order is there and the shelf is not. The candle is not defective, but it is not the candle you tested, and the customer's first impression is a weaker throw than the sample that won them over. That shows up later as a reorder rate you cannot explain. The cure shelf is a production asset. Budget it alongside the melter.
Two structural fixes beat buying more shelving. Stagger the range by cure length so 14-day citrus SKUs cycle through the same shelf twice as often as 21-day gourmands. Melter capacity and storage, in the same breath
Over roughly 22 working days, 1,000 units a month needs 8.2 kg a day — one charge on a 10 kg melter. 2,500 units needs 20.5 kg a day; 5,000 units needs 40.9 kg a day, four to five charges and the practical ceiling of one 10 kg unit. What to require from a supplier at this scale
At hobby volume you choose a supplier on price and delivery. At commercial volume those are hygiene factors, and six other things decide whether the relationship survives a year. Put this checklist to any supplier, CSI included.

Grade continuityYou are not buying "soy wax", you are buying a named grade with a stated ceiling. CSI 464 states up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks state up to 13%; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 and Soy Pillar Wax are different products again. A supplier who substitutes a "similar" grade has invalidated every batch record you hold. Stock depth, stated in your unitsNot "we have stock" — how many kilograms of this grade, today. Your month needs 180, 450 or 900 kg in one grade, six weeks running. Ask for the number, and ask what it becomes in the eight weeks before Diwali when everyone else is asking too.

Lead time you can put in a production calendarA 21-day cure already forces you three weeks ahead of sales; an unknown fortnight of supply makes that five weeks of guesswork. Get a stated dispatch window, check it holds in festival season, and build the reorder point from it — order when stock on hand equals lead time plus a safety week, not when the shelf looks empty.

Arguing against our own interest: where CSI's pack depth runs out. Be clear about this before you build a production plan on it. Fragrance oil tops out at a 1 kg pack. At 5,000 units a month you need 100 kg of oil, which through the catalogue is a hundred separate one-kilogram units — that is not bulk buying, that is a hundred bottles and a hundred openings. Wax tops out at 10 kg on every grade except one. Only Natural Soy Pearl Wax offers a 50 kg pack, at ₹21,240; if you want CSI 464 at 900 kg a month you are ordering 90 bags. Glass tops out at 100 pieces a pack, so 5,000 jars is fifty packs and fifty cartons to unpack. And stock moves: on the September 2026 pull, Soy Wax 464 Pellets were fully out of stock, the 100-sticker wick sheet was out of stock, and several votive and container colourways were out. A production SKU cannot be built on a colourway that disappears.
At 5,000 units a month and above, ask directly for these five things instead of clicking through the catalogue: (1) a scheduled call-off — a fixed monthly quantity reserved against a named grade, released weekly; (2) fragrance in units larger than 1 kg, quoted per kilogram at annual volume; (3) a reserved lot of your wax grade; (4) written lead times including a peak-season figure; (5) glass to your own carton and fill-weight spec. If a supplier cannot do those, that is useful information — at genuine factory volume the right answer may be wax direct from a manufacturer, with a specialist supplier kept for fragrance, wicks and glass. QC sampling: how many to burn, and what to write down
A batch record tells you what you did; a burn test tells you whether it worked. You cannot test everything and must not test nothing, so you need a sampling rule that does not depend on how the week is going.
Define a batch first. A batch is one SKU, one wax lot, one oil lot, one day. Change the wax bag mid-run and that is a new batch and a new record. At 1,000 units a month a batch is typically 200 candles — four charges of a 10 kg melter.

Two per cent spent on testing sounds expensive until you notice it is the same 2% you were losing to undiagnosed failures — except you now find out before the candles ship. Pull the sample at three points in the pour: the first ten, the middle, the last ten, plus one more per additional fifty. That is what catches drift — the melter cooling, fill weight creeping down, oil settling in the pot.

Two details make results comparable rather than anecdotal. Burn in four-hour sessions in the same closed room every time — throw scored in an open kitchen with a fan running measures nothing. And have throw scored by someone walking in: adaptation sets in within fifteen to twenty minutes, so whoever poured the batch is the least reliable nose in the building. What is a batch record and do I really need one?
A batch record is a one-page documented recipe per SKU, filled in during the pour, capturing wax grade and batch, oil and size, load as both a percentage and in grams, add temperature, stir time, pour temperature, ambient temperature, vessel, wick, fill weight, quantity poured and rejected, cure dates and the burn test result. You need one the moment a bad batch costs more than an afternoon. Without it you cannot diagnose a failure or reproduce a success — you can only change things and hope. It is the clearest line between a maker and a manufacturer, and it costs a sheet of paper.
How much space do I need to cure 1,000 candles a month?
A 14–21 day cure means roughly 70% of a month's output is always on the shelf — about 700 candles at 1,000 units a month. On a 70 mm jar at a 75 mm pitch, a 1,200 × 450 mm shelf holds about 96 candles, so that is roughly 7.3 shelves, or one and a half five-shelf racks. At 5,000 units a month it is about 3,500 candles, 7.3 racks and eight to ten square metres of dedicated dark, temperature-stable space. Measure your own jar — the pitch drives everything.
How many candles should I burn-test per batch?
One unit per 50 poured, with a minimum of three per batch, pulled from the first ten, the middle and the last ten of the run so that drift is caught. Add one destructive full burn per wax lot, burned to the bottom of the jar. At 1,000 units a month in batches of 200 that is about 20 units, or 2% of output and roughly ₹4,609 of material. Record time to full pool, pool depth at two hours, flame height, soot, hot throw at 30 and 120 minutes, cold throw, container temperature, surface and adhesion, and residual wax on the destructive unit.
What size wax melter do I need for commercial production?
Work from daily throughput. At 1,000 units a month you need about 8.2 kg of wax a day over 22 working days — one charge on a 10 kg melter. At 2,500 units it is 20.5 kg a day, and at 5,000 units it is 40.9 kg a day, which is four to five charges and the practical limit of a single 10 kg unit. Honestly: at about 5,000 units a month. Fragrance oil tops out at a 1 kg pack, so 100 kg a month is a hundred separate units. Wax tops out at 10 kg on every grade except Natural Soy Pearl Wax, which offers 50 kg at ₹21,240. Glass tops out at 100 pieces a pack.
