Quick answers — read this first
Does the wax change how strongly a candle smells when lit? Yes, through three levers the wax owns and the oil does not: how much oil it will hold (its stated fragrance ceiling), the temperature at which it liquefies (its stated melting point, which sets the floor for pool temperature), and how it sets and cures.

Which CSI waxes state figures I can design around? Four. CSI 464 states up to 10%, melting point 80–90°C and pour 80–90°C. CSI 468 states up to 13%, melt 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C. Luxury Soy Chunks state 8–13% with 10% recommended, add at 80–90°C and pour 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 states a melt point of 100°F (37.8°C) and fragrance added at 85°C with two minutes of stirring.

Is paraffin automatically stronger? Not at the same load, because you cannot run the same load. Most CSI oil pages state up to 10% for soy wax and up to 6% for paraffin wax, so a paraffin candle starts with 40% less oil in it.

How do I actually find out? Pour the same oil at the same load into three waxes, in the same jar, with the same wick and the same cure, and score them blind. Six jars, ₹1,728.88 of packs.
The short answer
The wax sets the ceiling. Up to 10% on CSI 464, up to 13% on CSI 468 and on Luxury Soy Chunks. A wax with a higher stated ceiling gives you more headroom — provided your oil page supports that number too.
The wax sets the melting point, and the melting point sets the floor for the pool. A wax stated at 50–53°C goes fully liquid far below one stated at 80–90°C. That changes how quickly a pool opens and how fluid it is once open.
Change the wax and you have changed the candle, not just one line of the recipe. Re-test the wick, re-check the pour temperature against the glass, and re-cure before you judge anything.

Straight answer
Will changing my wax change the hot throw of the same fragrance oil?
Yes — because the wax, not the oil, decides three of the four things that govern how much fragrance reaches a room. First, how much oil the candle can legitimately contain: CSI 464 states up to 10%, while CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Chunks both state up to 13%. Second, the temperature at which the wax is liquid: CSI 468's page states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour of 58–60°C, while CSI 464's page states both its melting point and its pour temperature as 80–90°C. A wax that liquefies thirty degrees lower forms a pool sooner and holds a more fluid pool at the same flame, and pool area and pool fluidity are what feed the air. Third, how the wax crystallises and cures, which is why a coconut-soy blend and a straight soy behave differently at day 7 and converge — or do not — by day 21. The oil controls only the fourth thing: which molecules are in the mix. So the same Sandalwood at the same 8% genuinely can read strong in one wax and quiet in another. What you cannot do is predict which from a page. Pour the same oil at the same load into three waxes, in one jar type, with one wick and one cure, and score them blind — six jars and ₹1,728.88 of packs settles it, and the answer holds for every scent you later run in that wax.

The three things a wax owns and an oil cannot touch

Makers talk about "a wax with good throw" as if throw were an ingredient. It is an outcome, and the wax controls three of its four inputs.

One: the ceiling. A wax's stated maximum fragrance load is a description of how much oil that formulation will hold in solution. Past it, the surplus does not bind — it migrates, beads on the surface and feeds the wick oil instead of wax. So a wax stated at 13% offers real headroom over one stated at 10%, and that headroom is worth money if your oil page also supports the higher figure. On the CSI range most oil pages state up to 10% for soy, which is why the load question is a two-page question rather than a one-page one.

Two: the melting point, and therefore the floor under the melt pool. This is the least understood number on a wax page and the one that matters most here. Fragrance leaves a candle by evaporating from the surface of the liquid pool, and evaporation rate rises steeply with temperature. A wax stated at 50–53°C is fully liquid at a temperature a wax stated at 80–90°C has not reached. With the same wick and the same flame, the first wax spends more of the burn with a wide, fully fluid pool and the second spends more of it with a narrow, stiff one.

Say what a melting point is and is not
A stated melting point is the temperature at which the wax turns liquid under test conditions. It is not the temperature of a burning candle's melt pool, and it is not a throw rating. The pool's actual temperature depends on the flame, the wick, the vessel and the room, and it is always above the melting point — that is precisely why the melting point is a floor and not a reading. Anyone quoting a wax's melting point as "the pool temperature" is quoting the wrong number.

Three: how it sets and cures. Soy and coconut-soy waxes crystallise differently, and the fragrance distributes through that crystal structure over days and weeks rather than hours. This is why a wax comparison judged at 48 hours is close to worthless: you may be comparing two cure curves at different points rather than two waxes at steady state. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page puts its own figure on this — minimum 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks — and 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy container candles.

The fourth input, the one the oil owns, is the molecular make-up of the fragrance itself: which notes are volatile and which are heavy, and therefore how much of the scent survives a cooler pool. Every CSI wax's stated figures, and the blanks

CSI's wax collection holds 15 waxes. Four publish figures detailed enough to design a recipe around. The rest state little or nothing about load and temperature, and the table says so — a blank is not a defect, it is a signal that the wax needs a more careful test and a lower starting load.

One figure on that table should make you ask a question. The CSI 464 page states its melting point and its pour temperature as the same band, 80°C – 90°C. Those are the page's own words and we quote them as published, but a pour temperature equal to a melting point is unusual, and 80–90°C is a high figure for a container soy. Fix: before you build a production recipe on it, ask CSI for the technical sheet and the SDS on WhatsApp, and in the meantime log the temperature you actually pour at and whether you get frosting or wet spots in that glass. The same applies to the Chunks page, which gives its pour temperature as 75–80°C in its specification block and 70–80°C in its how-to steps: pick one, write it down, and keep it constant across a test.

The nine waxes with no stated load are not off-limits, they are simply un-briefed. Start them at 8%, burn a cured jar, and only then consider going up. Two of them are not container waxes at all: Soy Pillar Wax is made for moulds, and a freestanding pillar is a different throw problem because there is no glass holding the pool in.

Soy versus paraffin, without the folklore

The oldest claim in candle making is that paraffin throws harder than soy. It is not baseless — paraffin's pool behaves differently and the wax carries and releases fragrance differently — but the version that circulates in maker groups skips the arithmetic that makes it a real comparison. Two things get left out.

The first is the load. Look at what CSI's own oil pages state. Sandalwood states "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". Eucalyptus Spearmint states up to 10% for soy, up to 6% for paraffin. So the honest comparison is not "the same oil at the same load in two waxes" — it is 20 g of oil in a 200g soy candle against 12 g in a 200g paraffin candle. A paraffin candle at its stated ceiling starts with 40% less fragrance in it than a soy candle at its stated ceiling.

The second thing left out is what CSI actually stocks. This is a soy-led range: paraffin is listed only in 500 g and 1 kg packs, one grade states a melting point of 80–90°C and the other gives no figure at all, and neither states a fragrance load. If you want to run a paraffin arm as part of a test, it is a ₹220 kilo and well worth the information. If you want to build a business on paraffin at volume, the pack ladder here will not support you and you should ask on WhatsApp before planning around it. The comparison most makers actually run is not a comparison. Pouring 10% into soy and 10% into paraffin ignores both oil pages and tells you about an out-of-specification paraffin candle. Pouring 10% into soy and 6% into paraffin is a fair test of two products as their suppliers specify them, but it is not a test of "which wax throws harder at the same dose". Fix: decide which question you are asking before you pour, and write it at the top of the sheet. If the question is commercial — which candle do customers call strong — the stated-ceiling comparison in the table above is the right one.

The three-wax test, costed

This is a protocol for you to run, not a result we are reporting. The design is deliberately narrow: six jars, three waxes, two burn dates, with the oil, the load, the vessel, the wick, the stir time and the cure conditions identical across all six. The jars are Amber Shiny Glass Jars with Black Lid, whose page states a capacity of 120 gm and dimensions of 6 cm diameter, 6.5 cm height — a stated gram capacity and a stated diameter, which is exactly what a controlled test needs. A 120 g candle at 8% is 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil.

Decide on cost per acceptable candle, not on the score aloneIf two waxes score the same, the cheaper one wins: CSI 464 is ₹14.35 less per 120 g candle than CSI 468 in this basket, which is ₹7,175 across 500 candles. If the dearer wax scores higher, you now know exactly what the improvement costs and can decide whether your price supports it. Write the verdict, the date and the bottle on the recipe card before the jars are thrown away.

These three are the container waxes whose pages publish enough to design around, which makes them the fair candidates for a controlled comparison. Per-candle figures are the wax only, in a 200g candle at 8% (184 g of wax), at 1 kg pricing.

Its page states a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — roughly thirty degrees below CSI 464's stated band — together with a fragrance load of up to 13% and suitability for single-pour container applications. If the "cooler, more fluid pool" mechanism matters for your oil in your jar, this is the wax that should show it. It is also the one wax in the test whose price steps down with volume, from ₹650 per kilo at 1 kg to ₹637 at 5 kg and 10 kg. The third arm, and the one with the most published guidance: a recommended load of 8% to 13% with 10% recommended, fragrance added at 80–90°C, a pour at 75–80°C, and an explicit cure instruction of minimum 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks before you judge anything. It states no melting point, which is the one blank in an otherwise complete page. Worth including precisely because its stated headroom is the widest: if your test says Chunks and CSI 464 throw the same at 8%, Chunks still hold a documented route to 10% and beyond when your oil page allows it.

A fourth arm worth ₹399 if you have the bench space: Eco Soy CSI 400, whose page states the lowest melt point in the range at 100°F (37.8°C), fragrance added at 85°C with two minutes of stirring, and — usefully for a controlled test — a recommended wick: "Recommended Wick Eco Wicks". It states no fragrance load, so hold it at 8% like the rest.

What you must re-test after a wax swap

This is where most wax changes go wrong, and it costs makers more than the wax ever does. A wick is not matched to a jar. It is matched to a jar and a wax and a load, because all three change how much fuel the flame has to draw and how easily it draws it. Swap the wax and the wick that was correct yesterday may now tunnel or soot.

The commercial version of that table is simpler. A wax swap is not a substitution, it is a new product qualification, and it should be scheduled like one: six jars, two burn dates, three weeks, one page of notes. Attempting it inside a live production run is how a business ends up with 300 candles it cannot describe. The oil decides what the candle could smell of. The wax decides how much of that gets out, and at what temperature.
Which is why "this fragrance has weak throw" is almost always an incomplete sentence. Weak throw in which wax, at which load, through which wick, after how many days? Change the wax and you have changed three of those four at once.

Frequently asked questions

Which wax gives the best hot throw?
There is no single answer, because throw is an outcome of wax, oil, load, wick, vessel and cure together. What you can compare is what the pages state: CSI 468 states the lowest melting point among CSI's specified container waxes at 50–53°C and a ceiling of up to 13%; Luxury Soy Chunks state 8–13%; CSI 464 states up to 10%. Run the three-wax test above with your own oil and jar — it is the only answer that applies to your candle.
Does coconut soy wax throw better than soy wax?
Its page states figures that point that way — a melting point of 50–53°C against CSI 464's stated 80–90°C, and a ceiling of up to 13% against 10% — and a wax that is liquid at a lower temperature spends more of the burn with a fully open, fluid pool. That is a mechanism, not a measurement. It also costs ₹26.24 more per 200g candle than CSI 464 in wax alone at 1 kg pricing, so test it before committing, and re-wick after the swap.
Does paraffin wax really smell stronger than soy?
The comparison is usually made unfairly. CSI's oil pages state up to 10% for soy wax and up to 6% for paraffin wax, so a paraffin candle at its stated ceiling holds 12 g of oil in a 200g candle against soy's 20 g — 40% less fragrance. Paraffin's pool does behave differently, and Semi Refined Paraffin at ₹220 a kilo is a cheap arm to add to a test. But CSI's paraffin is listed only in 500 g and 1 kg packs, so plan volume accordingly.
Is a wax's melting point the same as its melt-pool temperature?
No. A melting point is the temperature at which the wax becomes liquid under test conditions; a burning candle's pool is always hotter than that, and how much hotter depends on the flame, the wick, the vessel and the room. The melting point sets a floor: a wax stated at 50–53°C is fully fluid at temperatures a wax stated at 80–90°C has not reached. Treat it as a design input, never as a throw rating or a pool reading.
What load should I use when the wax page states nothing?
Start at 8% and do not go up until a fully cured jar has been burned. Nine of CSI's fifteen waxes state no fragrance load — including Natural Soy Pearl Wax, Beeswax Pellets and both paraffins — so the oil page becomes your only stated guidance, and most CSI oil pages state up to 10% for soy or 6–10% for candles. Ask for the SDS, hold at 8%, and burn test before you commit a batch.
Do I have to change my wick when I change wax?
You have to re-test it, which is not the same as changing it. A different wax draws differently at the same wick, so the pool diameter and the burn rate both move. Re-run three jars with your current wick and one size either side — Eco C1 at ₹5.90 and C2 at ₹9.44 — and keep the one that reaches the vessel wall cleanly. Note that only two CSI wicks state any sizing guidance, so this is a test rather than a lookup.
