How Do I Perform a Simple Temperature-Cycle Stability Test on Candles Before Ordering Raw Materials for Large-Scale Production?
शेयर करना
What equipment do I need? A controlled warm cabinet or warm room, a room thermometer, your normal cool room, a scale, a pen thermometer and a log sheet. Never a kitchen oven.
How many cycles should I run? Choose a number in advance and write it down, for example one warm and one cool stage per day for a week. It is your standard, not a CSI figure.
What counts as a pass? No oily film or droplets on any candle at that load at any check, confirmed by a tissue blot, and a normal burn afterwards.
Why test before the order, not after
A small batch can be tweaked easily. A large order cannot. Once you have bought production quantities of wax and oil, every candle made from them carries whatever margin — or lack of margin — the formula has. If the load turns out to be too high for your storage and courier conditions, you are left choosing between reworking stock, scrapping it, or reformulating with raw materials you no longer want.
A temperature-cycle test is the cheapest insurance against that outcome. It does not need special equipment or a laboratory. It needs a controlled warm space, a cool room, a set of identical candles and the discipline to follow a schedule you wrote before you started. CSI publishes no heat-resistance or survival temperature for any wax, so this test is how you create your own evidence.
Set-up: what to pour and what to buy
Test the exact formula you plan to produce. Same wax, same oil, same jar, same wick, same pour temperature. Changing any of these later means the test no longer describes your product. In this worked example the planned production candle is a 200 g CSI 464 container candle with Woody Oud in a matte 200 ml jar and an Eco C1 wick.
Choose three loads that bracket your target. For a target of 8% of total weight, test 7%, 8% and 9%. Using the series' load basis, the oil and wax per candle are: 7% = 14 g oil + 186 g wax; 8% = 16 g + 184 g; 9% = 18 g + 182 g. On a wax basis those are 7.53%, 8.70% and 9.89%, all within CSI 464's stated up-to-10%, but the last one only just.
| Item | Need | Working | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 wax | 4 × 186 + 4 × 184 + 4 × 182 = 2,208 g | 3 × ₹507.40 (three 1 kg packs) | ₹1,522.20 |
| Woody Oud oil | 4 × 14 + 4 × 16 + 4 × 18 = 192 g | 2 × ₹453.12 (two 100 g packs) | ₹906.24 |
| Matte 200 ml jars | 12 (3 spare) | ₹708.00 + ₹354.00 (packs of 10 and 5) | ₹1,062.00 |
| Eco C1 wicks | 12 (8 spare) | One 20-pack | ₹118.00 |
| Total | ₹1,522.20 + ₹906.24 + ₹1,062.00 + ₹118.00 | ₹3,608.44 |
If you already hold some of these, the outlay is lower. If you are also comparing wicks, pour extra candles for that separately; do not mix a wick trial into a stability test.
The cycle: a written schedule you follow exactly
Write the schedule before you pour, and do not change it halfway because a result surprises you. Every temperature and duration here is a suggested starting point you choose, not a CSI figure.
Record and read the results
| Check | 7% (C / H / Cy1 / Cy2) | 8% (C / H / Cy1 / Cy2) | 9% (C / H / Cy1 / Cy2) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 0 (after cure) | Clean ×4 | Clean ×4 | Clean ×4 | Baseline photos |
| Day 1 | Record | Record | Record | Warm-stage reading |
| Day 3 | Record | Record | Record | Tissue blot each |
| Day 5 | Record | Record | Record | Surface texture |
| Day 7 (end) | Record | Record | Record | Select survivors |
| Burn test | One candle | One candle | One candle | Pool, flame, smell |
C is the room control, H the steady warm hold, Cy1 and Cy2 the cycled candles. A blot that leaves a translucent, scented, greasy mark that does not dry off is oil; record which candle, which day and what the warm-stage reading was.
The pass rule: a load passes only if all four of its candles stay clean at every check and the burn test is normal. One oily cycled candle fails the whole load. That sounds strict, but in production you will make hundreds of candles at that load, and the test is a small sample of them.
Five ways a simple cycle test goes wrong
The test is simple, which makes it easy to undermine without noticing. These are the slips that most often turn a useful result into a misleading one.
Testing uncured candles
A candle a few hours old has not finished setting. Oil on its surface may say more about timing than about heat. Cure first, for at least the period the oil's page states, then start the clock.
Changing the schedule mid-test
If the 9% candles look fine on day three and you shorten the test to save time, you have stopped testing the condition you wrote down. Finish the schedule for every load.
Unlabelled candles
Three loads in identical jars look the same. Mark every base before pouring, not after, and keep the log beside the cabinet.
Mixing up oil and condensation
Checking a candle straight out of a cool room in humid weather can show beads that are water. Let it settle at room temperature in a dry spot, then blot.
Testing a different jar or lid
If production candles will ship lidded in a carton, include that in the cycle. A closed jar can hold warmth longer than an open one, and that is part of what your customers' parcels go through.
From pass to purchase
Suppose 8% passes and 9% fails. That tells you to order for 8%, with the 7% data as a fall-back. For an example first run of 1,000 candles at 8%: wax 1,000 × 184 g = 184 kg; oil 1,000 × 16 g = 16 kg.
At list pack prices, 184 kg of CSI 464 as eighteen 10 kg packs and four 1 kg packs is 18 × ₹5,074.00 + 4 × ₹507.40 = ₹93,361.60. CSI lists no pack larger than 10 kg, so ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for a quote on larger quantities. Woody Oud at 16 × ₹4,531.20 = ₹72,499.20. Together, ₹93,361.60 + ₹72,499.20 = ₹165,860.80 before jars, wicks, packaging, labour and GST. The test cost about 2% of that.
Notice what the test also saved: if you had planned 9% without testing, you would have ordered 18 kg of oil, two more kilograms than the formula can hold in your conditions. Using less of our oil is the result the test produced, and we would rather you bought the right amount.
Keep the record with the purchase order. When the bulk wax and oil arrive, pour a small check batch at the approved load and run a shortened version of the same cycle before full production, so you know the delivered materials behave like the samples did.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general formulation practice from what CSI's own product pages state, converts the pages' wax-weight loads to the total-weight basis used here, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wax heat resistance, survival temperatures, oil composition beyond the page), and labels every load step, test temperature, observation day or reject rate as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as the temperature at which a wax starts to release oil — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. CSI wax pages state fragrance loads as a share of wax weight; converted here to total weight with W ÷ (100 + W) (10% of wax = 9.09% of the candle; 13% = 11.50%). A stated maximum is the wax maker's ceiling for typical oils, not a promise for every oil. CSI publishes no wax heat-resistance or survival temperature; every test temperature, observation day, load step, reject rate and labour or energy cost is a suggested starting point or the reader's own figure. Blends with microcrystalline wax, Vybar, paraffin or Soy Pillar Wax are the maker's own to test. Wax prices re-checked 7 October 2026, oil prices 1 October 2026; product pages are authoritative.
