How to Scale From 100 to 500 Candles Per Month
शेयर करना
Do raw materials get cheaper when you scale to 500 candles a month? Barely. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike; Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack; Black Glossy Glass Jars are ₹70.80 each at both listed packs. The two real gains are whole-kilo fragrance buying, which removes a ₹207.20 monthly odd-lot penalty, and the larger care-label roll.
What stops most candle makers scaling past 200 a month? Working capital, not demand. Materials are paid at the start of a cycle that includes a 14 to 21 day cure, so every extra hundred candles of monthly output needs ₹20,370.40 more material cash, permanently. At 500 candles with one month of cover you are holding ₹2,03,704.00 of materials at all times.
What equipment do I need to make 500 candles a month? Melt capacity first, then accuracy. A Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00, a Steel Pouring Pitcher at ₹708.00, a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 and wick-setting tools. The full bench set on this page is ₹6,314.82 once — and none of it belongs in your cost per candle.
What 500 a month actually is, in kilos and rupees
Start with the physical facts, because they are the ones that decide whether the step is possible. Five hundred candles at a 150 g fill is 75 kg of wax a month. At 8% of wax weight that is 6 kg of fragrance oil. It is 500 wicks, 500 wick stickers, 500 vessels and 500 care labels. At listed CSI rates that comes to ₹1,01,852.00 of materials a month, against ₹20,370.40 at a hundred candles.
Now the part that surprises people: the cost per candle does not move. It is ₹203.70 at a hundred candles and ₹203.70 at five hundred, because the lines that matter most do not step with pack size. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) are ₹5.90 each whether you buy ten or a thousand. Black Glossy Glass Jars are ₹70.80 each at both listed packs. The only genuine per-unit improvements available at this step are on fragrance, where buying whole kilos ends the odd-lot penalty, and on care labels, where the larger roll is ₹0.70 each against ₹0.83.
So the step from 100 to 500 is not a cost-reduction exercise. It is a cash, capacity and space exercise. The bill rises by ₹81,481.60 a month and every rupee of it leaves your account before a single one of those candles is sold. That is the real subject of this page.
| Line | At 100 a month | At 500 a month | Listed rate | Does the rate improve? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 15 kg | 75 kg | ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg | No — one step at 500 g, then flat |
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 1.2 kg | 6 kg | ₹3.96 a gram at 1 kg | Yes, indirectly — whole kilos end a ₹207.20 odd-lot penalty |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 100 | 500 | ₹5.90 each at every pack size | No — identical from 10 to 1,000 |
| Black Glossy Glass Jar | 100 | 500 | ₹70.80 each at Pack of 5 and Pack of 10 | No — quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 100 | 500 | ₹2.50 each on the 40 sheet | No |
| Candle Care Stickers | 100 | 500 | ₹0.83 each at 500, ₹0.70 at 1,000 | Yes — ₹0.13 a candle on the larger roll |
| Materials from CSI | ₹20,370.40 | ₹1,01,852.00 | ₹203.70 a candle at both outputs | The step adds ₹81,481.60 a month |
| Cartons, mailers, labels, courier, labour | your figure | your figure | Not sold by CSI | Rises with volume, on your own invoices |
Cash is what stops most makers at 200
The reason most Indian home candle brands plateau somewhere between 150 and 250 candles a month is rarely skill and rarely demand. It is that materials are paid for at the start of the cycle and revenue arrives at the end of it, and a soy candle adds a 14 to 21 day cure between the two. At 500 candles a month you are holding ₹1,01,852.00 of materials in some form at all times, and if you also hold a month of cover — which is the minimum that stops a festive run collapsing — you are holding ₹2,03,704.00.
| Candles a month | Wax | Fragrance | Materials a month | With one month of cover | Step from the row above |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 15 kg | 1.2 kg | ₹20,370.40 | ₹40,740.80 | — |
| 200 | 30 kg | 2.4 kg | ₹40,740.80 | ₹81,481.60 | ₹20,370.40 |
| 300 | 45 kg | 3.6 kg | ₹61,111.20 | ₹1,22,222.40 | ₹20,370.40 |
| 400 | 60 kg | 4.8 kg | ₹81,481.60 | ₹1,62,963.20 | ₹20,370.40 |
| 500 | 75 kg | 6 kg | ₹1,01,852.00 | ₹2,03,704.00 | ₹20,370.40 |
| 100 to 500 | +60 kg | +4.8 kg | +₹81,481.60 | +₹1,62,963.20 | The whole step |
Read the last column. Each hundred candles of extra monthly output costs ₹20,370.40 of additional material cash, every month, permanently. That is the number to test a growth plan against before you test it against demand. If a maker at 200 candles wants 500 by Diwali, the honest question is not whether they can pour 500 — it is whether ₹61,111.20 of extra material cash exists, on top of the stock they already hold, in the eight weeks before the pour date.
The purchase changes, line by line
Wax: bigger packs, same rate
Seventy-five kilos a month is seven 10 kg packs plus a 5 kg, and that costs exactly the same as seventy-five separate kilos would: ₹38,055.00. What the bigger packs buy you is fewer things to open, fewer part-bags to reseal and fewer chances to run out mid-pour. The CSI 464 page states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage and asks that the wax be kept away from sunlight and moisture, which in an Indian summer is a real instruction rather than a formality. Quantities beyond the largest listed pack are quoted on WhatsApp; nothing above 10 kg is published.
Fragrance: the odd lot disappears
This is the one line where the step genuinely improves your rate, and it does so indirectly. At a hundred candles you need 1.2 kg of oil a month — a kilo plus two 100 gm packs, which is ₹4,964.00 at an effective ₹4.14 a gram against the kilo rate of ₹3.96. That odd lot costs ₹207.20 a month for no benefit. At five hundred candles you need six whole kilos, ₹23,784.00, and the effective rate and the listed rate are the same number. The discipline that comes with it: at 500 candles a month, a scent that cannot justify a whole kilo across a season probably should not be in the permanent range at all.
Wicks and vessels: no step, so buy for cover
Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) are ₹5.90 each at ten, at a hundred, at five hundred and at a thousand. Black Glossy Glass Jars are ₹70.80 each at both listed packs, and the same is true across most of CSI's 150 g glass class — the White Matte Glass Jar and the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40 each are listed at one rate across their packs too. Buying the larger pack here does not save you a rupee. It saves you a stockout, which at 500 candles a month is worth considerably more than a rupee — but call it what it is, and do not put it in the cost column.
Finishing: the one small win to take
Care labels are the only finishing line with a published step. The 500 roll is ₹0.83 each and the 1,000 roll is ₹0.70 — ₹0.13 a candle, ₹63.50 a month at 500 candles, and a roll that now lasts two months rather than five. It is small money. It is also one line on one order, and at this output it makes sense to take every one of those before doing anything harder.
| Change | At 100 a month | At 500 a month | Worth | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy wax in 10 kg packs | 15 kg as a 10 kg and a 5 kg | 75 kg as seven 10 kg and a 5 kg | No rate change | Fewer packs to open and reseal; the rate is flat above 1 kg |
| Buy fragrance in whole kilos | 1.2 kg at an effective ₹4.14 a gram | 6 kg at ₹3.96 a gram | ₹207.20 a month at 100 candles | The odd lot is the penalty, not the kilo |
| Move care labels to the 1,000 roll | ₹0.83 each | ₹0.70 each | ₹63.50 a month | The only published step in the finishing lines |
| Buy wicks and jars for cover, not for rate | 100 of each | 500 of each | Nothing per unit | Both are flat at every listed pack; depth buys availability only |
| Outer cartons, mailers, printed labels | your figure | your figure | your figure | Not sold by CSI — ask your own supplier what changes at five times the volume |
Batch rhythm: from pouring when you feel like it to pour days
At a hundred candles a month you can pour when there is an hour free. At five hundred that habit fails for a reason that has nothing to do with effort: every changeover between scents costs a clean-down and leaves scented wax behind, and a bench that is being set up and packed away four times a week never produces a full day's output. The change is to consolidate into pour days, with one scent per melt and as many melts in a session as your capacity allows.
The arithmetic that makes this work is capacity per melt. The Mini Electric Wax Melter is published as a 1 litre unit with 300 W and 600 W modes, so the only reliable way to turn it into a batch size is to weigh what your own vessel actually holds of your own wax and divide 75 kg by it. Do that before you promise anyone a 500-candle month: if the answer is a large number of small melts, the ceiling is the machine and no amount of scheduling will move it.
The equipment that buys back the month
Equipment does not belong in your per-candle cost, and putting it there is how a maker convinces themselves that their first fifty candles were a disaster and their five hundredth was a miracle. Judge these purchases on two things instead: hours saved per pour day, and wax not left behind. The full list below is ₹6,314.82 once — less than 6% of a single month's materials at 500 candles, and it is bought once rather than every month.
| Item | Price | What it fixes at 500 a month |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Pouring Pitcher Large (600 ML) | ₹708.00 | Spillage, and the clean-down after it |
| Pen Thermometer | ₹354.00 | Pour temperature becomes a recorded number |
| Steel Scraper | ₹236.00 | Scented wax recovered from the melter wall |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray 1 Litre | ₹520.00 | Jar cleaning between scents and before labelling |
| Pack | Price | Rate each | Cover at 500 candles a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin (C1) / 100 Wicks | ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 | About a week |
| Thin (C1) / 500 Wicks | ₹2,950.00 | ₹5.90 | One month, nothing spare |
| Thin (C1) / 1000 Wicks | ₹5,900.00 | ₹5.90 | Two months |
Two more things belong on the bench at this volume and neither is glamorous. A Wick Setting Tool at ₹399.00 and a pack of Bamboo Stirring Sticks at ₹1,062.00 for fifty — Lalitha Jagan's review of the sticks says they are "quite helpful In mixing the colours and stirring the wax", which at fifty melts a month is fifty stirs you are not doing with a spoon. A heat gun is genuinely useful for surface defects; CSI lists a Hot Air Gun at ₹531.00 but it is down to a single unit, so treat it as something to check rather than to plan around.
Where 75 kg of wax and 500 jars are going to live
At a hundred candles a month, materials live in a cupboard and curing candles live on the dining table. At five hundred, neither is true. You are storing eight wax packs, six kilos of fragrance in glass, fifty packs of jars and a rolling population of curing candles that can reach several hundred at once when a 14 to 21 day cure overlaps two pour days. That is a room, or at minimum a wall of shelving, and it has to be a cool one.
The Indian specifics matter here more than anywhere else on this page. A store room that reaches 40°C in a Delhi or Nagpur May will soften soy in the pack and can distort a cured candle's surface; a Mumbai or Kochi monsoon puts moisture into anything left open. The CSI 464 page states a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage and asks for the wax to be kept away from sunlight and moisture, and the CSI 468 page asks for the pack to be kept sealed. Fragrance oil in glass is the most sensitive line you hold and also the most valuable per kilo — ₹23,784.00 of it a month at this output — so it belongs in the darkest, coolest place you have.
| What | How much, monthly | Packs | Storage it needs | Value at listed rates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 75 kg | Seven 10 kg and one 5 kg | Off the floor, out of sunlight, sealed; cool and dry as the page asks | ₹38,055.00 |
| Fragrance oil | 6 kg | Six 1 kg | Dark, cool, upright, away from heat; the smallest volume and a high value per kilo | ₹23,784.00 |
| Vessels | 500 jars | Fifty Pack of 10 | The bulkiest and most fragile line; boxed, low shelves, never stacked more than the carton allows | ₹35,400.00 |
| Wicks and stickers | 500 of each | One 500 wick pack, 13 sticker sheets, one label roll | A drawer; keep stickers flat and dry or they stop sticking | ₹4,613.00 |
| Curing candles | Up to 500 at once | — | Shelving at a stable temperature, lids off, dust covered, labelled by batch and pour date | work in progress |
| Shelving, racks, crates, a cool room | — | — | Whatever your space needs | your figure |
Where quality slips between 100 and 500
A hundred candles a month is made by a person paying attention to each one. Five hundred is made by a process, and a process fails differently. The three failures that appear at exactly this step are always the same: the load drifts because oil is being weighed in a hurry, the pour temperature drifts because nobody is measuring it on the fourth melt of the day, and the cure gets shortened because an order is late. Each one is invisible in a spreadsheet and obvious in a customer's living room.
Three controls handle all of this and none of them costs anything. Write the formula down as grams rather than percentages so nobody has to do arithmetic at the bench. Record the pour temperature for every melt, not every batch. And burn-test one candle from every scent every month, at full cure, in the same room, with the previous month's candle next to it. That last one is the only real defence against slow drift, and it is the first thing a growing brand stops doing.
Walkthrough: the three months you step up
| Month | Output | Materials to buy | What to change | What to prove |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | 200 candles | ₹40,740.80 | Move to pour days. Buy the melter (₹2,360.00) and the pitcher (₹708.00). Weigh the day's oil before the first melt. | How many candles one pour session actually produces, and how much wax your vessel holds |
| Month 2 | 350 candles | ₹71,296.40 | Two pour days a week. Whole kilos of fragrance only. Cut the range to the scents that can justify a kilo across the season. | Whether the cure shelf holds two overlapping pour days without candles being moved while soft |
| Month 3 | 500 candles | ₹1,01,852.00 | Full output, one month of cover behind it (₹2,03,704.00 on the shelf). Care labels on the 1,000 roll. | That the candle burning at month three is the same candle as the one from month one |
| Every month | — | your figure | Cartons, mailers, printed labels, courier and your own hours rise with volume and are not CSI costs | That the price you sell at still works once those rise |
The reason for three months rather than one is that every constraint on this page reveals itself at a different output. Cash bites at the order. Melt capacity bites on the first full pour day. Cure space bites in week three, when two pour days overlap and there is nowhere to put the second one. Storage bites when 75 kg of wax and fifty boxes of jars arrive on the same afternoon. Meet them one at a time and each is a solvable afternoon; meet them together in the last week of October and the month is lost. The candle itself does not change: ₹203.70 of materials, the same grade, the same 8% load, the same wick in the same jar. Everything else about the business does.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and the most useful thing this page can tell a maker planning this step is that buying five times as much will not make any of it cheaper. The wax, the wicks and this glass jar class all carry the same published per-unit rate at every listed pack size, and the page says so in three separate places rather than implying a volume saving that does not exist. Where a real step does exist — whole kilos of fragrance instead of odd lots, and the larger care-label roll — it is priced exactly. Equipment is listed at its live price and kept out of the per-candle cost, because putting it there flatters big months and punishes small ones.
Every price is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and the linked product pages are always authoritative. Per-gram, per-kilo and per-unit rates are calculated from the pack variants named beside each figure. Fragrance load is expressed as a percentage of wax weight, the convention CSI's wax pages use: the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page states up to 10% of total wax weight and the Mango Coconut page states a candle usage of 6 to 10%, so the two agree at 10% and the 8% used throughout is a working load. The output levels of 100, 200, 300, 350, 400 and 500 candles a month, the one-month cover target, the two pour days a week and the three-month plan are illustrative arithmetic, not CSI recommendations, and no allowance for wastage or rejects is built into the pack quantities. CSI does not publish delivery times, freight rates, minimum orders or bulk discounts, and none is estimated here; quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp. Store prices are inclusive of tax as stated on the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page, GST invoicing is available, and your own tax position is a question for your adviser rather than for a supplier's blog.
