Bulk Buying · Cash vs Unit Cost
100 kg at an example ₹30 off saves ₹3,000.00 over four months — but takes ₹35,055.00 more out of the bank on day one. After the cost of that cash, the net is ₹1,993.35. Whether that beats flexibility depends on your buffer, your festive cash needs and whether your wax decision is closed.
₹1,993.35
net saving of 100 kg up front vs 4 × 25 kg, after an example 1.5%/month cost of money · CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg vs an example ₹477.40 quote
Quick answers — read this first
Which is cheaper? In total, 100 kg at the example quote — by ₹3,000.00. After the cost of the extra cash at 1.5% a month, by ₹1,993.35.

How much more cash does 100 kg take today? ₹35,055.00 more on day one, ₹22,370.00 at month two, ₹9,685.00 at month three.

What is the break-even quote? Any 100 kg price above ₹496.26/kg loses to 25 kg monthly at 1.5%/month. See the cash table.

When should I buy 25 kg anyway? When the wax decision is still open, when 100 kg breaks your cash buffer, or when the cash would earn more as festive stock.
The short answer
Answer: Take 100 kg only if the net saving (₹1,993.35 in the example) beats what the extra ₹35,055.00 could do now, and your wax choice is settled.
Method: Cumulative cash out per month for both paths; charge the extra cash your cost of money; compare with the saving. Check the cash buffer first.
Flexibility: Buying 25 kg keeps the option to change wax after a 4 + 4 bench test. A 100 kg order decides that test for you.
Cash out of the business: 25 kg monthly vs 100 kg up front CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg (25 kg = 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg) vs an example 100 kg quote at ₹477.40/kg · 25 kg used per month ₹0 ₹10,000 ₹20,000 ₹30,000 ₹40,000 ₹50,000 Start of month 1 +₹35,055 tied up Start of month 2 +₹22,370 tied up Start of month 3 +₹9,685 tied up Start of month 4 ₹3,000 saved 25 kg monthly 100 kg up front Gross saving ₹3,000.00 · cost of the extra cash at an example 1.5%/month ₹1,006.65 · net ₹1,993.35 — if demand holds, the wax does not change and the day-one cash was not needed for anything that earns more.
Cumulative cash paid for wax at the start of each month. The pale bars buy 25 kg of CSI 464 monthly (₹12,685.00 each); the dark bars pay ₹47,740.00 for 100 kg up front at an example quote. The labels show the extra cash tied up under the bulk path until month four, when it comes out ₹3,000.00 ahead.
Straight answer
I can buy 25 kg today or 100 kg at a discount — how do I compare immediate cash preservation against lower unit cost?
Compare the net saving after the cost of the extra cash with what that cash could do now — and buy 25 kg if your wax decision is still open. Lay out both paths month by month. At CSI's flat ₹507.40 a kilo for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 25 kg is ₹12,685.00 a month; an example 100 kg quote at ₹477.40 is ₹47,740.00 on day one. The bulk path is ₹3,000.00 cheaper in total but ties up ₹35,055.00 extra on day one, falling to ₹9,685.00 by month three. At an example 1.5% monthly cost of money that cash costs ₹1,006.65, leaving a net saving of ₹1,993.35. Take it only if your cash stays above your safety buffer, the quote is below the break-even ₹496.26 a kilo, the saving survives your lowest plausible monthly use, and the wax has passed its tests. Otherwise buy 25 kg — 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg — and keep the option to change.
One line: a discount is a bet that demand, price and your recipe stay still; buy small while any of them is moving.
Twenty-five kilos of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 from CSI's listed bags is 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg = ₹12,685.00, at the same flat ₹507.40 a kilo you would pay for 100 kg of listed bags. There is no pack-size reason to buy more than a month at a time on this wax. Anything above the listed bags is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published.

Buy 100 kg only if the net saving beats what that cash could do this month

The discount is certain. Everything that has to go right for you to collect it is not.

This is a cash question dressed as a price question. Both paths give you the same 100 kg of wax over four months. Path A pays ₹12,685.00 at the start of each month. Path B — the bulk offer, here an example quote of ₹477.40 a kilo, ₹30 below the 25 kg price — pays ₹47,740.00 on day one. Path B is cheaper in total by ₹3,000.00. But it takes ₹35,055.00 more out of your bank account on day one, ₹22,370.00 more at the start of month two and ₹9,685.00 more at the start of month three. Only in month four does it come out ahead.

Put a price on that extra cash and the saving shrinks. At an example cost of money of 1.5% a month — use your own: a loan rate, an overdraft rate, or the return the cash earns in your business — the extra cash tied up costs ₹1,006.65. The net saving is ₹1,993.35, about 3.9% of the four months' wax. That is the number to weigh against three things the discount cannot see: whether you need the cash for something that earns more, whether your monthly use will really stay at 25 kg, and whether this is still the wax you want to be pouring in month four.

For most small Indian candle businesses in October, the third question is decisive. If your wax choice is settled — tested, piloted, through a summer — and your cash buffer survives the bigger payment, take the 100 kg. If you are still comparing waxes, if festive orders need cash for oil and jars, or if your cash would drop below your safety buffer, buy 25 kg today. The flexibility is worth more than ₹1,993.35.

The CSI principle
Pay for flexibility when the decision is still open. Pay for the discount when it is closed.
A bulk order is a bet that demand, price and your recipe stay still. Buy small while any of them is still moving.

The month-by-month cash comparison

Here are both paths side by side. The 25 kg price is CSI's listed price for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, which is flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg up. The 100 kg price is an example — the title gives no figure, and CSI publishes no volume discount — so put your real quote in its place. The arithmetic does not change.

Reader's 25 kg/month use · CSI 464 CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 · example 100 kg quote ₹477.40/kg · example 1.5%/month cost of money
Cumulative cash out, Path A (25 kg monthly) vs Path B (100 kg up front)
Start of month Path A paid so far Path B paid so far Extra cash out under B Cost of that cash for the month
1 ₹12,685.00 ₹47,740.00 ₹35,055.00 ₹525.82
2 ₹25,370.00 ₹47,740.00 ₹22,370.00 ₹335.55
3 ₹38,055.00 ₹47,740.00 ₹9,685.00 ₹145.28
4 ₹50,740.00 ₹47,740.00 ₹3,000.00 less —
Total ₹50,740.00 ₹47,740.00 Saving ₹3,000.00 ₹1,006.65

The same comparison can be done as a present value: discount each of Path A's four payments at 1.5% a month and add them up. That gives ₹49,626.26 in today's money, against ₹47,740.00 for Path B — a gap of ₹1,886.26, close to the simple net figure above. It also tells you the break-even quote: any 100 kg price above ₹496.26 a kilo — a discount smaller than ₹11.14 — is worse than buying 25 kg a month at this cost of money, even before any risk.

Get the quote in writing with the same terms
Compare like with like: the same wax, the same bag sizes, the same delivery terms and the same invoice basis. A 100 kg quote that excludes freight is not comparable with a 25 kg price that includes it. Comparing landed cost per kilogram shows how to put shipping into the same unit, and whether to buy monthly, fortnightly or in bulk at 100 kg a month covers the rhythm once volume is higher.

The cash-buffer test and what the cash could do instead

A saving that empties the bank account is not a saving. It is a risk you chose to take.

Before comparing returns, check survival. Suppose — as an example you replace — you have ₹60,000.00 available for materials and you never want to drop below a ₹25,000.00 buffer for refunds, courier bills and the unexpected. Path A leaves ₹47,315.00 after this month's wax. Path B leaves ₹12,260.00, which is below the buffer. If your own numbers look like that, the decision is made: buy 25 kg, whatever the discount.

Example cash figures — replace with your own
Cash-buffer test
Path A: 25 kg today Path B: 100 kg today
Cash available for materials (example) ₹60,000.00 ₹60,000.00
Paid for wax today ₹12,685.00 ₹47,740.00
Left today ₹47,315.00 ₹12,260.00
Minimum buffer (example) ₹25,000.00 ₹25,000.00
Passes? Yes No

If both paths pass, ask what the extra ₹35,055.00 would do in the business this month. In October, the obvious answer is festive stock. At CSI's 1 kg price for Bergamot Amber (₹5,437.00), that cash buys 6.45 kg of oil — enough fragrance for about 403 candles of 200 g at 8%. If those candles would sell, the cash earns far more as oil than as a ₹1,993.35 wax saving. If they would not, the bulk discount is the better use. Either way, it is a comparison you make with your own order book, not with a rule of thumb.

The mistake: assuming the next three months look like this one. Path B's saving assumes you use exactly 25 kg a month. If demand falls 40% after Diwali, you use 15.0 kg a month and the 100 kg lasts 6.7 months; the carrying cost on the bulk lot rises to about ₹2,387.00 on the half-lot method, and the net saving shrinks towards nothing. Fix: run the comparison at your lowest plausible monthly use, not your best month. Safety stock when use swings between 30 and 80 kg shows how to describe that range, and switching suppliers without reformulating the whole collection explains why the wax decision should be closed first.

The option you keep by buying 25 kg: changing your wax

There is a cost on Path B that no spreadsheet shows by default: once you hold 75 kg of one wax, switching becomes expensive. If you are halfway through comparing two waxes — say your current CSI 464 against Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — a 100 kg order today quietly decides the comparison for you. Buying 25 kg covers this month's production while the test finishes. Then you commit to the winner.

The bench test is the same control method used throughout this series: four candles in the current wax as the control, four in the candidate, same oil lot, same wick, same jar, same pour day, three burned and one shelved per wax — labelled working practice, not a standard. CSI's product page for CSI 468 states a 50–53°C melting point, a 58–60°C pour temperature and up to 13% fragrance load; CSI 464's page lists up to 10% and an 80–90°C melt/pour working range. Those are the makers' figures, not a verdict on which wax suits your candle — the scoring sheet decides that.

1
Buy this month's wax as 25 kg2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg of CSI 464 = ₹12,685.00. Production continues; one 1 kg portion becomes the control for the test.
2
Pour 4 + 4 on the same dayCSI 464 control vs CSI 468 candidate, both at 8% Bergamot Amber (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Eco Thin C1 wicks, White Matte jars. Follow each page's own temperatures.
3
Cure and burn in pairsSame cure checkpoint for both (48 hours, 7 days or 14 days are labelled examples). Burn 3–4 hours per cycle with full cool-down between, side by side, and fill the sheet every time.
4
Take one of each to the endThe lower third of the jar is where a wax difference most often shows. Keep the shelf candles in your warmest storage spot.
5
Commit — then consider the bulk quoteOnly after the sheet is complete does a 100 kg quote make sense, and then for the wax that won. That is about the time your 25 kg runs out at 129 candles a month. Whether 1 kg of testing is enough before ordering 100 kg sets the evidence bar.

The priced test kit and the per-candle numbers

Because the control wax comes out of the 25 kg you are already buying, the kit only adds the candidate wax, the shared oil, wicks and jars. Four 200 g candles need 736 g of wax, 772.8 g with a 5% allowance. Eight candles need 128 g of oil, 134.4 g with the same allowance.

White Matte Glass Jar 8 jars 2 packs of 5 ₹708.00

Set the kit against the bulk decision. ₹2,257.00 buys you certainty about which wax deserves the next 100 kg — roughly 113.2% of the net bulk saving in this example. The per-candle picture also shows why the wax decision matters more than the discount: a 200 g Bergamot Amber candle costs ₹257.05 in materials in CSI 464 and ₹280.90 in CSI 468 at their 10 kg rates (wick and jar included; labour, packaging, freight and GST excluded). The ₹30 example discount is worth ₹5.80 a candle. The choice of wax moves the candle by ₹23.85 — and only a test can tell you whether that difference buys anything your customers notice.

The decision rule: five questions, in order

Working decision rule · example thresholds you replace
25 kg today, or 100 kg at a discount?
# Question If no If yes
1 Is the wax decision closed (tested, piloted, through a summer)? Buy 25 kg. Finish the test first. Go to 2
2 Does Path B keep your cash above your minimum buffer? Buy 25 kg. Go to 3
3 Is the quote below the break-even price (₹496.26/kg at 1.5%/month here)? Buy 25 kg. The discount is too small. Go to 4
4 At your lowest plausible monthly use, is the net saving still positive? Buy 25 kg or negotiate 50 kg. Go to 5
5 Would the extra day-one cash earn more as festive stock? Take the 100 kg. Buy 25 kg and spend the cash on stock that sells.

For the worked example — a maker using 25 kg of CSI 464 a month in October, still testing CSI 468, with Diwali orders to fund — the rule stops at question 1. The concrete order is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg = ₹12,685.00, plus the ₹2,257.00 test kit. Revisit the 100 kg quote in November with a finished scoring sheet and a clearer view of post-festive demand. If your wax decision is already closed and your buffer survives, the same rule may well say take the 100 kg — the point is to know which question you are answering.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A larger order today would be better for us. But on our own listed catalogue, CSI 464 costs ₹507.40 a kilo whether you buy 1 kg or 10 kg bags, so a month's worth at a time costs you nothing extra per kilo. Unless someone is offering you a real discount that clears the break-even price — and you have already settled on the wax — keep the cash.
The cheapest wax is the one you can still change your mind about.

This post compares two cash paths for the same wax. The 100 kg MOQ threshold asks whether your volume justifies a bulk minimum at all, and the ₹40-per-kg payback count turns a fixed saving into candles. Once the purchase pattern is settled, set a reorder point so you never run out between orders, and plan the Diwali 300 kg if the festive peak is what is pushing you to buy big. Frequently asked questions

Is it better to buy wax in bulk or monthly?
Bulk is better only when the net saving after the cost of tied-up cash beats what that cash could do elsewhere, your buffer survives, and your wax choice is settled. Otherwise buy monthly.
How do I calculate the cost of holding inventory?
Charge the extra cash tied up each month your own monthly cost of money, and add it up over the months until the bulk path catches up. This page uses 1.5% a month as an example.
What discount makes buying 100 kg worth it?
At 1.5% a month and 25 kg monthly use, any quote below ₹496.26 a kilo against ₹507.40 — a discount above ₹11.14 — beats buying monthly before risk. Recompute with your own rate and use.
Does CSI sell 25 kg cartons of soy wax?
No listed 25 kg carton. Buy 25 kg as 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg bags; CSI 464's page mentions a 25 kg format, so ask on WhatsApp whether it is available. No volume discount figure is published.
Should I test a new wax before buying in bulk?
Yes — four control and four candidate candles, then a pilot. Is 1 kg of testing enough before 100 kg? covers it.
How much cash should a candle business keep for raw materials?
There is no universal figure; set a minimum buffer for refunds, courier bills and surprises, and never let a bulk purchase take you below it. When to manage wax as commercial inventory sets out the wider controls.
Cash first, then discount
