Change Control · Jars · Straight to tapered
Your wick was approved for one pool size, because a straight jar has only one. A tapered jar has a different pool at every depth — bigger then smaller, or smaller then bigger. The same wick can be right at the top and wrong at the bottom. Test it band by band, to the end.
−23%
change in pool area from first burn to last in a jar narrowing 8.4 → 6.8 cm, 200 g fill (illustrative) · 47.39 cm² → 36.32 cm²
Quick answers — read this first
Can the same wick behave differently as the candle burns deeper in a tapered jar? Yes. The pool area changes with depth, so the same wick meets a bigger or smaller surface on each burn. A straight-jar approval holds at only one depth in the taper.

How much does the pool change? Illustration, 200 g: narrowing 8.4 → 6.8 cm, pool 47.39 cm² → 36.32 cm² (−23%); widening 6.8 → 8.4 cm, 45.32 cm² → 55.42 cm² (+22%). Straight 7.6 cm: 45.36 cm² throughout.

What must be retested? Every wick-and-jar line, tagged by depth band (top, middle, bottom third), and a full-life burn on every candle. Formula tests: KEEP. See the matrix.

How many candles and what cost? Six — 3 straight (control), 3 tapered — all to the end. CSI materials: ₹1,817.02. See the kit.
The short answer
Geometry: Frustum volume = π × h ÷ 12 × (D² + D·d + d²). 200 g at 0.88 g/ml fills a 6.8→8.4 cm taper to 5.45 cm; pool diameter falls from 7.77 cm to 6.80 cm as it burns.
Verdict: KEEP formula data; REPEAT every wick-and-jar line by depth band; NEW consumption per band and fill-line weight; full-life on every set.
Decision: Every band no worse than the same band in the straight control. Narrowing jars: see the too-powerful-later post.
One wick, three jars, 200 g each: the pool it meets as the candle burns down Illustrative inside diameters in cm at the first-burn surface (top number) and at the base (bottom number) · labelled 0.88 g/ml · to scale 7.607.60 7.776.80 7.608.40 STRAIGHT (old) pool constant: 45.4 cm² NARROWS TO THE BASE pool 47.4 → 36.3 cm² (−23%) WIDENS TO THE BASE pool 45.3 → 55.4 cm² (+22%) A straight jar tests the wick once. A tapered jar tests it at every depth.
Three jars drawn to scale, each holding 200 g at a labelled 0.88 g/ml. The straight 7.6 cm jar offers the wick the same 45.36 cm² on every burn. The tapered jar, drawn both ways up (6.8 and 8.4 cm, 9 cm deep, illustrative), offers a pool that shrinks 23% or grows 22% between the first burn and the last. Geometry only — no burn result is implied.
Straight answer
I changed from a straight-sided jar to a tapered container — can the same wick behave differently as the candle burns deeper?
Yes — because the pool it has to melt changes with every burn. In a straight jar the melt-pool area is the same at every depth, so one approval covers the whole candle. In a tapered jar it is not. In our illustration — a straight 7.6 cm jar against a taper of 6.8 cm at the base and 8.4 cm at the top, 9 cm deep, 200 g at a labelled 0.88 g/ml — a jar that narrows toward the base gives the wick 47.39 cm² on the first burn (+4.5% vs straight) and only 36.32 cm² on the last (−19.9%). Turned the other way, a jar that widens toward the base starts almost exactly like the straight jar and ends +22.2% bigger. So the same wick can be slow to a full pool early and run hot late in the first jar, or be right early and tunnel late in the second. Keep your formula data; repeat every wick-and-jar line, scored by depth band, and burn all six test candles to the end. CSI materials: ₹1,817.02.
One line: a straight jar tests the wick at one pool size; a tapered jar tests it at every depth — so score it by depth, all the way down.
A straight-to-tapered test is six candles, all taken to the end, scored by depth band. At 200 g and 8% that is about 100.8 g of oil and 1,159.2 g of wax with a 5% allowance — Bergamot Amber 1 × 100 g + 1 × 15 g (₹665.02) and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹975.00) in CSI stock, or your own approved formula poured identically into both jars.

In a tapered jar the pool is a moving target

In a straight jar the wick meets the same pool on every burn. In a tapered jar it meets a different one each time.

When you approved your wick in a straight-sided jar, you approved it for one melt-pool area, because a cylinder has the same diameter at every depth. A tapered container breaks that. As the candle burns down, the surface the wick has to melt gets steadily smaller or steadily larger, depending on which way the jar tapers. Your title gives no dimensions, so this page uses a labelled illustration: the old straight jar is 7.6 cm inside, and the new tapered jar is 6.8 cm at the inside base and 8.4 cm at the inside top, 9 cm deep. We look at it both ways up.

Pour 200 g into each (at a labelled 0.88 g/ml, confirm with a weighed pour). The straight jar fills to 5.01 cm. The jar that narrows toward the base fills to 5.45 cm, because the lower part holds less; the jar that widens toward the base fills to only 4.52 cm. The volume of a taper is a frustum, π × h ÷ 12 × (D² + D·d + d²), so the fill heights come from solving that for 227.3 ml, not from the straight-jar formula.

Put the two tables side by side and the answer to your title is visible without a single burn. In the jar that narrows, the first burn meets a pool 4.5% bigger than your straight jar, and the last burn meets one 19.9% smaller: a swing of 23% from top to bottom for one wick. In the jar that widens, the first burn is almost exactly your straight jar (−0.1%) and the pool then grows by 22% toward the base. The same wick, in the same formula, is being asked to do a different job on the first burn and the last.

The CSI principle
A straight-jar approval is valid at one depth in a tapered jar — the depth where the diameters match.
In the illustration the narrowing jar is exactly 7.6 cm about 0.95 cm below the first-burn surface. Above that the wick has more to melt than it was approved for; below it, less.

Which way does your jar taper — and what does each direction risk?

Tapers go both ways, and they fail in opposite directions. Most tumbler-style jars are wider at the top and narrow toward the base; some apothecary and bell shapes are the reverse. Measure the inside diameter at the rim, at the middle of the fill and just above the base before deciding which of these describes yours. The mechanisms below are general candle-making knowledge, not CSI measurements — they tell you what to look for, not what will happen.

Mechanisms commonly described for tapered containers · test, do not assume
Two tapers, two opposite risks
Narrows toward the base Widens toward the base
Early burns Bigger pool than the straight jar: slower to a full pool, possible tunnel ring About the same as the straight jar (in this illustration)
Late burns Smaller pool, glass closer to the flame: deeper pool, taller flame, warmer glass possible Bigger pool, glass further away: wick may stop reaching the wall, tunnelling late in life
Wick risk Right at the top can be too strong later Right at the top can be too weak later
Where the test concentrates Early (full pool) and late (heat) Late (full pool, tunnelling)
Covered in depth by the narrowing-jar post this page

The narrowing jar is the more common and, on the safety side, the more demanding case, because the wick meets less wax and closer glass exactly when the jar has been heated the most. The narrowing-jar post works that case in full: the wall gap at every depth, and what "too powerful later" looks like on a scoring sheet. This page stays with the general question — can the same wick behave differently as the candle burns deeper? — and with how to test a taper in either direction.

"It passed the first three burns, so the wick is fine." In a straight jar, three good burns are good evidence. In a tapered jar they describe the top third of the candle only. A wick that under-melts slightly at the top of a narrowing jar can look like a slow starter and then run hot at the base; a wick that is perfect at the top of a widening jar can tunnel in the bottom half. Neither shows up until the candle gets there.

The retest matrix for straight → tapered

Using the series' four verdicts — KEEP, CONFIRM, REPEAT, NEW. Because the pool changes with depth, every wick-and-jar line has to be read by depth band, which makes most of them REPEAT.

Retest matrix · straight → tapered · formula and wick unchanged
What a taper voids
Test Verdict Why
Oil–wax compatibility, cure, cold throw KEEP Formula unchanged
Time to full pool — early burns REPEAT Top diameter differs from the straight jar
Pool depth and tunnel ring — by depth band REPEAT Pool area changes every burn
Flame, mushrooming, soot — by depth band REPEAT Fuel supply follows pool size
Jar-side reading — by depth band REPEAT Glass distance changes with depth
Hot throw CONFIRM at top and at middle Pool size varies
Full-life burn REPEAT, every set The taper's effect is cumulative with depth
Consumption g/hour — by depth band NEW Burn rate may differ top vs bottom
Label burn time NEW calculation Sum of band hours, not one rate × weight
Fill weight at your line NEW A frustum holds a different weight at the same height
Mark three depth bands on every test jar
Split the fill height into thirds and mark them on tape outside the jar — for the narrowing illustration, about 1.82 cm each. Every burn, note which band the pool finished in. At the end you will have results per band, which is the only form that tells you whether the wick is right at the top, the middle and the bottom.

The protocol: score by depth, not by burn number

In a taper the useful question is never "how was burn four?" but "how was the bottom third?"
1
Measure the taperInside diameter at the rim, at mid-fill and just above the base, plus internal depth, on three new jars. Decide which way it tapers and by how much.
2
Weigh-pour the fill lineA frustum does not hold 200 g where a cylinder does. Fill one jar to your line with melted wax and weigh it, or pour 200 g and mark where it lands.
3
Pour six from one melt3 × straight jar (control) and 3 × tapered jar, approved wick, 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax per 200 g candle at 8%. CSI 468 has no published fragrance ceiling in this series; 8% is a labelled test value.
4
Mark depth bands and cureTape the jars and mark thirds of the fill. Cure together — for example 7 days, a labelled checkpoint.
5
Burn every candle to the endAbout 3–4 hours per burn (a commonly used cycle; label it), full cool-down between. Fill the scoring sheet every burn and tag each row with its depth band. All six go to the end; a taper cannot be judged from a partial life.
6
Compare band against bandCompare each tapered band with the same band in the straight control. The approved wick passes only if every band is no worse on every safety line.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We could tell you to pour a wick series in the tapered jar from day one and sell you three packs of wicks. For most makers the approved wick, tested band by band against the straight control, is the right first step, and the bracket belongs only to the band that fails. If the top and middle pass and only the bottom third runs hot, a new wick is not automatically the answer — see the options on the narrowing-jar page.

Decision rule

CSI publishes no numeric flame or jar-temperature limit. Every depth band must be no worse than the same band of the straight control on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one). Set performance tolerances before testing.

Record the jar with three inside diameters, not one — rim, mid-fill and base — plus internal depth and the weighed fill line. The reproducibility-record post shows how, and the only-the-jar post gives the general jar retest list. If your taper is also taller or heavier-based than the old jar, those are separate changes worth testing separately: taller jars and thicker bases.

Tapered tumblers are a festive favourite, and Diwali is 8 November 2026. A tapered-jar test runs every candle to the end, so it needs time. Send us your three jar diameters on WhatsApp and we will help you size the kit from listed stock; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp, with no published discount figure.
Plan a tapered-jar test

For the diameter maths behind every jar change, start at the 7.6 → 7.9 cm hub. For the specific case of a jar that narrows toward the base — the commoner and more safety-sensitive taper — read the narrowing-jar post next. And if you are choosing a tapered jar because your straight one is out of stock, the alternative-container post scores how far a taper is from your approved shape before you order samples.

CSI containers: CSI does not list a tapered jar with published dimensions. The White Matte Glass Jar, 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar and Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml are listed without published internal diameters or fill weights — measure rim, middle and base on a sample before assuming any of them is straight-sided. See all glass jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not jars. This page recommends testing the wick you already approved, band by band, before buying any bracket — and says plainly that a failure confined to one depth band is not automatically a reason to buy a new wick.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, rechecked 25 September 2026. Jar diameters and depth are illustrations; fill heights (solved from the frustum volume), pool diameters and areas at each stage are plain geometry.

The 200 g fill, 8% test load, 0.88 g/ml wax factor, 5% allowance, three-candle sets, 3–4 hour cycles, 7-day cure and thirds-based depth bands are labelled working practices. CSI 468 has no published fragrance ceiling in this series. CSI does not publish jar dimensions, taper, wick charts or safety limits. Frequently asked questions

Do tapered candle jars need a different wick?
Not necessarily, but the approved wick has to be proven at every depth, because the pool area changes as the candle burns down. Test it band by band against a straight-jar control.
How do I calculate the volume of a tapered candle jar?
Treat the inside as a frustum: V = π × h ÷ 12 × (D² + D·d + d²), with D and d the top and bottom inside diameters. For a fill weight, multiply by your wax factor (about 0.86–0.90 g/ml, confirm by weighing).
Why does my candle tunnel near the bottom of the jar?
If the jar widens toward the base, the pool the wick has to melt grows as it burns down, so a wick that was right at the top can fall short near the bottom. Compare with a straight-jar control by depth band.
Why does my candle burn hotter near the bottom?
In a jar that narrows toward the base, the same wick meets a smaller pool with the glass closer to the flame. The narrowing-jar post covers this case in detail.
How many burns do I need to test a tapered jar?
All of them. A tapered jar cannot be judged from a partial life, because each depth band is a different pool size. Take every test candle to the end.
Can I keep my old test results when switching to a tapered jar?
The formula results (compatibility, cure, cold throw) — yes. Everything the wick does in the jar should be repeated and recorded by depth band. The only-the-jar post has the general list.
