I Changed from Cotton to Wooden Wicks for Better Aesthetics — Can I Keep the Same Fragrance Load and Assume Only the Wick Needs Testing?
शेयर करना
Does only the wick need testing? No. The jar is re-questioned too: a wider flame can heat the glass differently, and wood adds NEW lines — lighting, crackle, clip seating, trimming.
What can I keep? Cold throw, colour and frosting at the approved load, and storage results at that load only.
What does it cost? The 12-candle kit is ₹4,148.46. At 8%, wood adds ₹29.30 per candle over Cotton Braided in production (100-pack wooden wicks).
Wood is not a thicker cotton wick
A cotton wick is a braid: fuel climbs it by capillary action and burns in a narrow, teardrop flame above the tip. A wooden wick is a thin strip of wood: fuel travels through the grain and burns along the top edge in a wider, flatter flame, often with the soft crackle that makes wooden wicks popular. That difference in flame shape changes how heat reaches the pool and the glass. It changes how the wick copes with a given amount of fragrance and a given pool depth. It adds customer-facing behaviour that cotton never had — crackle, a different lighting technique, a different way of trimming. So when you switch for aesthetics, you are not only changing a component; you are changing the system your fragrance load and your jar were approved in.
That is why the title's two assumptions — keep the same fragrance load, and only the wick needs testing — are both risky. In general candle-making practice, makers commonly re-tune the fragrance load when they move to wooden wicks, and commonly revisit the container too. We are not saying your 8% will fail with wood. We are saying it has never been tested with wood, and the test that finds out costs the same as the test that assumes.
| Part of the system | Cotton (approved) | Wood (new) | What it can affect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wick | Braided cotton | Wood strip | Flame shape, lighting, crackle, heat pattern — everything |
| Flame | Narrow teardrop over a round braid | Wider, flatter flame along the strip | How heat reaches the pool and the glass |
| Fuel draw | Capillary flow up the braid | Capillary flow through the wood grain | How the wick copes with a given fragrance load and pool depth |
| Fragrance load | Approved at 8% with cotton | Unknown with wood | A load that suited cotton can make a wood wick struggle, smoke or drown — or be fine; test it |
| Jar | Approved with a cotton flame | Re-question | A wider flame can heat the glass differently; the diameter that suits one wick may not suit the other |
| Customer experience | Silent, familiar | Crackle; can be harder to light; needs its own trimming | NEW lines on the sheet and on the label |
Why the fragrance load is back on the table
Fragrance load affects more than scent strength. Oil changes how the melted pool behaves — how readily it flows up the wick and how the flame burns it — and every wick copes with that within a range. A cotton wick approved at 8% has shown it copes at 8%. A wooden wick draws fuel through a different structure and presents a different flame to it, so the load at which it burns cleanly, holds a steady flame and gives the throw you want may be different. Some makers find they can run a little lower with wood because of the wider pool heat; others find a wooden wick struggles or smokes at a load cotton handled comfortably. Which is true in your candle is not predictable from the outside.
So the test brackets the load: 6%, 8% (your approved figure) and 10%, all with the wooden wick, against the cotton control at 8%. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated by the wax maker up to 13% fragrance load — 26 g per 200 g candle — so all three test loads sit inside the stated maximum. That maximum is a formulation limit, not a target. If your production wax is different, use it, and check its product page for the maker's ceiling; for many waxes CSI publishes none.
| Group | Load | Candles | Oil each | Wax each | Oil for group | Wax for group |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton control | 8% | 3 | 16 g | 184 g | 48 g | 552 g |
| Wooden | 6% | 3 | 12 g | 188 g | 36 g | 564 g |
| Wooden | 8% | 3 | 16 g | 184 g | 48 g | 552 g |
| Wooden | 10% | 3 | 20 g | 180 g | 60 g | 540 g |
| Total | 12 | 192 g | 2,208 g |
Why the jar is back on the table too
A wider, flatter flame spreads its heat differently from a narrow cotton flame. The width of wooden wick that gives a full pool in your jar is not published by CSI for any diameter, and the heat that width delivers to the glass is exactly what you are testing. Two things to check before you pour. First, the internal diameter: measure it at the top of the wax and near the base; a tapered jar matters more with wood, because a flame that suits the wide top can be too much lower down. Second, the glass itself: ask your jar supplier whether the jar is suitable for wooden-wick candles and what they advise. CSI does not publish glass thickness or heat ratings for its jars, including the White Matte Glass Jar; its fill weight is not published either — confirm your 200 g with a weighed pour.
During the test, jar-side heat is recorded for every group at every burn, with extra attention in the lower third. CSI publishes no numeric jar-temperature or flame-height limit. The acceptance is no hotter than your cotton control and within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard; we quote no numbers from it). If the wooden candle only passes in a different jar, that is a new product, not a wick swap — the new-candle-system post looks at when a change should be treated that way.
The retest matrix for cotton to wood
| Earlier result | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cold throw, colour, frosting | KEEP | Unlit-candle results; wax and oil unchanged — as long as the load is unchanged |
| Storage sweating at the approved load | KEEP / REPEAT | Keep at 8%; repeat for any new load the wooden wick needs |
| Fragrance load | REPEAT | Test a small range with the wooden wick; do not assume 8% carries over |
| Jar suitability and jar-side heat | REPEAT | Different flame, different heat pattern |
| Melt pool diameter, depth, time to full pool | REPEAT | Every burn, every group |
| Flame height and width, soot | REPEAT | Measure width as well as height |
| Hot throw | REPEAT | Blind, per load |
| Consumption rate and end of life | REPEAT | Burn to the end |
| Ease of lighting, relighting, crackle, wick trimming | NEW | Lines that do not exist for cotton |
| Wick holder / clip seating and centring | NEW | A wooden wick sits in its own clip; check it stays upright and seated |
Compare this with the matrix for a cotton-to-cotton swap in the wick-change hub: there, fragrance load stays KEEP and there are no NEW lines. Here the load is REPEAT, the jar is re-examined, and two NEW lines appear. That is the practical difference between changing a part and changing the system. Storage results carry over only at the approved load; if the wooden wick ends up at 6% or 10%, the sweating and storage checks for that load are new work — the storage-testing post explains which storage tests a wick-only change can skip, and why a load change cannot.

What the switch does to your cost per candle
Wood costs more than cotton, and the load you end up at changes the oil cost. At CSI's listed production prices — Woody Oud 1 kg (₹4,531.20, ₹4.53 a gram), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 kg (₹5,999.00) and Performance Wooden Wicks in the 100-pack (₹41.30 each) — here is the material cost of one 200 g candle, excluding the jar, labour, packaging, freight and GST.
| Configuration | Oil | Oil cost | Wax cost | Wick | Total (ex jar) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided, 8% | 16 g | ₹72.50 | ₹110.38 | ₹12.00 | ₹194.88 |
| Eco Thin C1, 8% | 16 g | ₹72.50 | ₹110.38 | ₹5.90 | ₹188.78 |
| Wooden (100-pack), 6% | 12 g | ₹54.37 | ₹112.78 | ₹41.30 | ₹208.46 |
| Wooden (100-pack), 8% | 16 g | ₹72.50 | ₹110.38 | ₹41.30 | ₹224.18 |
| Wooden (100-pack), 10% | 20 g | ₹90.62 | ₹107.98 | ₹41.30 | ₹239.91 |
At the same 8% load, switching from Cotton Braided to wood adds ₹29.30 per candle. If the test shows the wooden wick performs at 6%, the oil saving claws some of that back — the wooden candle at 6% is ₹208.46 against ₹194.88 for cotton at 8%. That is a reason to test the lower load, not a reason to choose it: 6% is only a saving if it passes throw and every safety line. The wooden wick packs step down in price per wick — ₹59.00 in the 10-pack, ₹47.20 in the 50, ₹41.30 in the 100 — which is one of the few genuine pack-size breaks in CSI's wick range.
The priced test kit
Twelve 200 g candles in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with Woody Oud Fragrance Oil — three cotton control at 8%, three wooden at each of 6%, 8% and 10% — with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a labelled working assumption). The control uses your existing cotton wicks. Use your own production wax and oil if they differ.

Deciding and releasing
| What the sheet shows | Decision |
|---|---|
| Wood passes at 8% on every line against cotton | Release at 8%; add NEW lines (lighting, crackle, trimming) to the label and recipe card |
| Wood passes at 6% but not 8% | Release at 6% only after repeating storage/sweating checks at 6%; update the recipe card |
| Wood passes only at 10% | Check throw was not the only reason; repeat storage checks at 10%; confirm within the wax's stated maximum |
| Wood fails on jar heat at every load | Not in this jar — a different jar is a new product with its own tests |
| Wood fails on lighting reliability | Fix with a lighting instruction only if every other line passes |
Whatever the result, record it as a revised formulation, not a wick substitution: new wick type, the load it passed at, the jar, the test dates and the lines that were NEW. Keep ten wooden wicks and one finished candle from the first batch as retained samples. The revised-formulation post sets out when a change should be treated this way, and the one-wick-to-two post covers the other common reason to change the wick layout rather than the wick.
Related wick changes: if the wooden wick gives a bigger flame at your usual load, the bigger-flame post explains how to separate wick from load; if you are sizing the wooden wick up to reach the edge, the one-size-up post covers the late-burn heat checks. If the wooden candle throws harder but runs hotter, the better-throw, hotter-jar post explains why that is not a pass. Wooden wicks also need checking across fragrance types — see the lavender-versus-vanilla post — and the full wick-change checklist lists every line.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Our wooden wicks cost more per candle than our cotton ones, so a switch to wood suits us. This page still tells you to test the load and the jar with it, and to price the result before you commit.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. Test quantities and per-candle costs are arithmetic on the CSI load convention (oil = candle weight × load), computed to the gram and the paisa.
The comparison of cotton and wooden wicks is general candle-making knowledge phrased as what can happen. The 6/8/10% range, candle counts, burn cycles and 5% loss allowance are working practices. Wooden wick width per diameter, clip details and CSI jar glass properties are not published. CSI publishes no flame-height or jar-temperature limit. For help: WhatsApp +91 7397976926.
