I Have ₹25,000 to Start a Candle Business — Exactly How Much Should I Spend on Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks, Jars and Packaging?
शेयर करना
How many candles does ₹25,000 make? In this basket, 150 candles of 85 g plus spares. But the vessel decides that number more than anything else: the same materials money makes about 195 candles in a ₹31.86 votive and about 78 in a ₹107.00 glass jar with a lid.
Why is the packaging row blank? Because CSI sells raw materials, not outer cartons, mailers, brand labels or ribbon, and does not publish courier rates. Putting a typical figure there would be a guess dressed up as a price. Get three quotes locally, write them into the worksheet, and take the difference out of the vessel line first.
What does one candle cost to make? ₹104.82 for the Eucalyptus Spearmint version and ₹113.17 for Woody Oud — ₹43.13 of wax, ₹22.47 to ₹30.81 of fragrance, ₹5.90 of wick, ₹30.00 of tin and ₹3.33 of stickers. Your label, box and courier are on top.
The split, line by line
Before any money moves, three decisions fix the shape of the basket. Fill weight: 85 g. It is a real sellable size for a first range — big enough to feel like a product, small enough that 150 of them fit a ₹25,000 budget. Load: 8% of wax weight, which is 6.8 g of fragrance per candle; both oils below publish a candle range of 6–10% for soy, and CSI 464 publishes a ceiling of up to 10%, so 8% sits comfortably inside the lower of the two. Two scents, one size, so every candle uses the same wick, the same tin and the same pour.
| Line | What you buy | Quantity | Covers | Cost | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 10 kg + 5 kg | 15 kg | 150 candles at 85 g = 12.75 kg, with 2.25 kg spare for test burns and spills | ₹7,611.00 | 30.4% |
| Fragrance | Eucalyptus Spearmint 500 g + 50 g | 550 g | 75 candles at 6.8 g = 510 g, with 40 g spare | ₹1,864.40 | — |
| Fragrance | Woody Oud 500 g + 50 g | 550 g | 75 candles at 6.8 g = 510 g, with 40 g spare | ₹2,537.00 | 17.6% |
| Vessels | Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill, ×13 packs of 12 | 156 tins | 150 candles plus 6 spare | ₹4,680.00 | 18.7% |
| Wicks | Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) 100 + 50, Thick (C2) 20 | 150 + 20 | One wick per candle, plus 20 of the other size to settle the wick test first | ₹1,073.80 | 4.3% |
| Finishing | Wick stickers ×4 sheets, care stickers ×500 | 160 + 500 | 150 candles; the care roll lasts three more runs | ₹813.00 | 3.3% |
| Materials from CSI | — | — | 150 candles | ₹18,579.20 | 74.3% |
| Labels and outer packaging | Not sold by CSI | — | Your own quotes | Your figure | — |
| Courier to customers | Not sold by CSI | — | Your own quotes | Your figure | — |
| Held back for the two rows above | — | — | — | ₹6,420.80 | 25.7% |
Two things in that table are worth arguing with, so argue with them before you order. The 2.25 kg of spare wax looks generous; it is there because the 15 kg comes as a 10 kg plus a 5 kg pack and because your first wick test will eat several candles. The 500-sticker care roll is four times what this run needs, because 500 is the smallest roll — which makes it the cheapest line in the basket per candle and the one that will still be on your shelf next year.
Why the shares land where they do
Once you fix the fill weight, the wax line is fixed: 150 candles at 85 g is 12.75 kg, and at ₹507.40/kg that is roughly ₹6,469.35 of wax before spares. Once you fix the load, the fragrance line is fixed too — 8% of wax weight means the oil weighs exactly 8% of what the wax weighs, and because oil costs several times more per gram than wax, a line that is 8% by weight becomes 17.6% by money. The wick line is almost an afterthought at ₹5.90 a candle, and the sticker line is rounding.
That leaves the vessel, and the vessel is where the freedom lives. It is the only line that can move from ₹31.86 to ₹212.40 without changing what the candle is, and it is the only line where a decision made on a photograph rather than a calculator can halve your output. The section below prices that choice properly.
| Component | Quantity | Rate | Eucalyptus Spearmint | Woody Oud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 85 g | ₹507.40/kg | ₹43.13 | ₹43.13 |
| Fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight | 6.8 g | ₹1,652.00 / ₹2,265.60 per 500 g | ₹22.47 | ₹30.81 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin | 1 | ₹360.00 for 12 | ₹30.00 | ₹30.00 |
| Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) | 1 | ₹590.00 for 100 | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 |
| Wick sticker and care sticker | 1 each | ₹100.00 for 40 · ₹413.00 for 500 | ₹3.33 | ₹3.33 |
| Materials per candle | — | — | ₹104.82 | ₹113.17 |
| Label, box, mailer, courier | — | Not sold by CSI | Your figure | Your figure |
Multiply those out across 75 candles of each scent and the materials actually consumed come to ₹16,349.20 — ₹2,230.00 less than the ₹18,579.20 the basket costs. That gap is not waste. It is the 2.25 kg of spare wax, the 80 g of spare oil, the six spare tins, the twenty test wicks and 350 care stickers you have not used yet, all of which go into the next run. Expect it on every first order: packs do not come in the sizes your plan needs.
The vessel is the lever
Here is the same ₹18,579.20 of materials money spent through eight different CSI vessels, each filled to the fill weight its own page states, with fragrance at 8% and the wick size that suits the diameter. Nothing else changes.
| Vessel | Fill | Vessel cost | Wick | Materials per candle | Candles from the same money |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heart Cutout Velvet Candle Jar | 50 g | ₹45.00 | Thin (C1) | ₹92.81 | 200 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 70 g | ₹31.86 | Thin (C1) | ₹95.11 | 195 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g fill | 85 g | ₹30.00 | Thin (C1) | ₹104.82 | 177 |
| Tin Containers, 85 gram | 85 g | ₹70.80 | Thin (C1) | ₹145.62 | 127 |
| Tin Containers, 135 gram | 135 g | ₹96.76 | Thick (C2) | ₹213.71 | 86 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 150 g | ₹94.40 | Thick (C2) | ₹222.92 | 83 |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid | 150 g | ₹107.00 | Thick (C2) | ₹235.52 | 78 |
| Apothecary Glass Jar with Dome Lid | 500 g | ₹212.40 | Cotton Braided | ₹613.59 | 30 |
Read the two tin rows next to each other. The Golden Aluminium Tin and the 85 gram Tin Container hold the same 85 g of wax, and one costs ₹30.00 against ₹70.80. That ₹40.80 difference is finish, lid style and look — a real difference to a customer, and a difference of 50 candles on this budget. Neither is the wrong answer. What is wrong is choosing between them without knowing the number.
The Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid at the bottom is the clearest illustration of the lever. It is a genuinely beautiful vessel and it turns ₹25,000 into about 30 candles, because a 500 g fill needs six times the wax of an 85 g tin before you count the jar. On 11 September 2026 there were 13 of the 500 gm size in stock, which is another reason it belongs in a limited run rather than under a first range.
Write down the retail price you think you can charge, then work down: vessel, wax at that fill, fragrance at 8% of that wax, wick, stickers. If the materials come to more than about a third of your intended price, you have either chosen too grand a vessel or too low a price — and at this budget the vessel is the easier of the two to change. Buy one small pack of the two vessels you are torn between (a pack of 10 votives at ₹318.60 and a pack of 12 tins at ₹360.00 is ₹678.60), pour one of each, photograph both, and let that decide.
The lines only you can price
CSI sells raw materials. It does not sell outer cartons, mailers, bubble wrap, brand labels, ribbon or shrink wrap, and it does not publish courier rates, so there is no honest CSI price for any of them. Rather than put a plausible-looking number in this table and let you build a plan on it, the rows below are blank. Fill them in with real quotes, then subtract from ₹6,420.80.
| Line | Ask whom | Unit | Your figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand label, printed | A local sticker or label printer, or an online print service | Per label, at 200 pieces | — |
| Outer carton or gift box | A packaging supplier or a corrugated box maker | Per box, at 200 pieces | — |
| Mailer and void fill | The same supplier, or a courier's own packaging | Per shipment | — |
| Ribbon, tissue, thank-you card | Local stationery or wholesale market | Per candle | — |
| Courier to your customer | Two or three couriers, for your city and for metro delivery | Per shipment, by weight slab | — |
| Payment gateway or marketplace fee | Your gateway or marketplace | Percentage of order value | — |
| Electricity, gas and your own time | Your own electricity bill and hours worked | Per batch | — |
| Total of your own lines | — | — | Must be under ₹6,420.80 |
Two honest notes about that ₹6,420.80. It is not a budget for packaging — it is simply what is left of ₹25,000.00 after the materials, and if your quotes come to more, the money has to come out of the basket. Take it out of the vessel line first: dropping from the ₹30.00 tin to a ₹31.86 votive at a 70 g fill frees roughly ₹1,457.37 across 150 candles without touching the wax, the fragrance or the wick. Take it out of the fragrance line last, because that is the line customers notice.
Two more things this page will not do. It will not calculate your GST position — CSI prices are inclusive of tax, GST invoicing is available, and what you can or cannot claim is a question for your own adviser. And it will not quote delivery: freight to your pincode is quoted on WhatsApp for the actual basket, because it depends on weight and destination.
What the basket actually produces
The output is 150 candles in two scents. As an illustrative check only — not a recommendation, and not a market price — 150 candles sold at ₹399.00 each would be ₹59,850.00 of revenue against ₹18,579.20 of CSI materials, leaving ₹41,270.80 before a single one of your own lines is paid: labels, boxes, courier, gateway fees, your electricity and your time all come out of that figure. Price your own candles from your own costs and your own market, not from this example.
If you own no equipment yet
The split above is a materials split — it assumes you already have a way to melt wax, a scale that reads to a gram, and something to pour with. If you do not, four items are genuinely hard to do without: a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00, a Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ml at ₹708.00, Bamboo Stirring Sticks at ₹118.00 for five and a Wick Centering Device at ₹118.00 — ₹1,298.00 together. A scale matters just as much; CSI's Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00 and was down to two units on 11 September 2026, so a kitchen scale you already own is a sensible substitute.
Taking ₹1,298.00 out of the materials money costs you about 12 candles from this run. Adding a Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 takes the equipment block to ₹3,658.00 and about 35 candles — which is a real trade, and worth it only if you are pouring often enough that holding a steady temperature matters more than 35 units of stock. Buy the thermometer either way: pouring soy without knowing the temperature is the most expensive free thing in candle making.
What the second ₹25,000 looks like
Three things change. You already own the equipment, and you are carrying roughly 2 kg of wax, 80 g of oil, six tins, twenty wicks and 350 care stickers, so the same money buys a slightly larger run. You now know which wick size is right, so the C2 test wicks are unnecessary. And you can move the fragrance up the pack ladder — buying Eucalyptus Spearmint at 1 kg instead of 500 g takes the rate from ₹3.30/g to ₹3.07/g, worth ₹120.36 on the 510 g one scent uses in a run.
What does not change is more instructive. CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at 1, 5 and 10 kg alike, so buying more wax at once saves nothing per kilo. Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each from a 10-pack to a 1,000-pack. Woody Oud costs ₹4.53/g at both 500 g and 1 kg. The honest version, from the supplier, is that your second ₹25,000 buys only a little more than your first — the growth in your business has to come from selling at a better price or wasting less, not from a bulk rate that is not there. When your volumes outgrow the printed packs, bulk pricing is quoted on WhatsApp rather than printed on the page.
| Line | First ₹25,000 | Carried into the second run | Buy again? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 15 kg, ₹7,611.00 | About 2 kg | Yes — no per-kilo saving at any pack, so buy what fits your storage |
| Fragrance | 1,100 g, ₹4,401.40 | About 80 g | Yes — move to 1 kg packs where the rate falls (₹120.36 on one scent) |
| Vessels | 156 tins, ₹4,680.00 | 6 tins | Yes — flat rate per tin at the pack of 12 |
| Wicks | 170 wicks, ₹1,073.80 | 20 C2 test wicks | Yes, but only the size you committed to |
| Finishing | 660 stickers, ₹813.00 | 350 care stickers | Wick stickers only |
| Equipment | ₹1,298.00 if you had none | All of it | No |
| Your own packaging and courier | Your figure | Whatever you over-ordered | Ask for a second quote at the higher quantity |
Where a ₹25,000 start goes wrong
The most common failure at this budget is spreading it thin: five scents, three vessel styles, two waxes and a set of dyes, which produces fifteen combinations, no repeatable formula and about forty candles. Two scents and one vessel is not a modest ambition — it is the only way ₹25,000 turns into a range you can photograph, price, reorder and improve. Add the third scent from the money the first 150 candles bring in.
The second failure is buying a wax whose working figures you cannot plan against. CSI 464 publishes a ceiling of up to 10% and gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring, which is why it is the wax in this basket. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks publish a fuller method — melt to approximately 80–85°C, add fragrance at 80–90°C, stir slowly for two minutes, pour at 75–80°C, and a maximum of up to 13% — and at ₹599.00/kg they cost ₹7.79 more per 85 g candle, which across 150 candles is ₹1,167.90. Both are good choices. A grade whose ceiling is not published is a harder place to start, because you cannot calculate your oil before you buy it.
The third failure is timing. Candles need to cure before they are worth judging, so a budget spent three weeks before a market stall produces candles you have not properly burned. Diwali 2026 is 8 November 2026; working back through dispatch and a 14–21 day cure puts the pour in the first half of October and this order in late September or the first days of October. Money spent late is not the same as money spent well.
One of each scent, sealed, with the date and the pack sizes written underneath. They cost ₹104.82 and ₹113.17 of materials and they are the only way you will ever answer the question has something changed? with evidence rather than memory. When the second basket arrives, burn a new candle beside a retained one from the first run, in the same room on the same evening. If they behave the same, your formula is holding.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and every priced line in this basket is something CSI sells — so the page is careful to say what it cannot sell you. Outer cartons, mailers, brand labels, ribbon, courier, gateway fees, labour and electricity are not CSI costs, and no figure is invented for them: the ₹6,420.80 left over is what remains of ₹25,000.00, not an estimate of what packaging costs. The page also says plainly that CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at every pack from 1 kg to 10 kg and Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack, so your second order buys little more than your first — the growth has to come from your pricing and your wastage, not from a bulk rate that is not printed.
Every price comes from live CSI stock on 11 September 2026 at September 2026 pricing, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fill capacities are those stated on each vessel page. The fragrance ceiling of up to 10% for CSI 464 is the wax manufacturer's stated formulation maximum as printed on the page, expressed as a percentage of wax weight; the 6–10% candle ranges for Eucalyptus Spearmint and Woody Oud are what those oil pages print, and where the two differ the lower governs. The 150-candle run, the 85 g fill, the 8% load, the two-scent line-up and the spare allowances are a worked scenario, not measured data. The ₹399.00 selling price is illustrative only and is not a recommendation or a market rate. Stock counts are a snapshot of one day, and CSI does not publish delivery times, freight rates, minimum orders or discounts, so none is estimated here.
Message WhatsApp +91 7397976926 to have this basket checked before you order, for GST invoicing, for MSDS and IFRA documentation, for a delivery quote to your pincode, or for bulk pricing once your volumes outgrow the printed pack sizes.
