Production calculator · Fill line to wax order
On a 300 ml jar the fill line is a design choice worth kilos. Weigh water to it, convert with an approximate factor, confirm with a weighed pour, and then plan for the one thing that quietly adds wax on a 500-jar run: pouring a little high.
2.21 kg
extra wax and oil across 500 jars for every 1 mm of fill in an illustrative 8 cm straight-sided jar · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax for 500 × 300 ml jars filled to a line? It depends on the line. At an example 255 g of water to the line and an approximate 0.88 g/ml, about 224 g of candle per jar. With an example weighed fill of 222 g at 8%: 102.12 kg of wax and 8.88 kg of oil net.

What should I order? With three test jars and 3% loss: 105.81 kg of wax and 9.20 kg of oil. That rounds to 106 kg of wax (₹45,054.00 in Natural Soy Pearl) and 9.215 kg of oil in real packs.

How much does 1 mm of fill matter? In an illustrative straight-sided 8 cm jar, 1 mm ≈ 5.03 ml ≈ 4.42 g of candle. Across 500 jars that is 2.21 kg. Pouring 2 mm high on every jar costs about 4.4 kg.

Can I calculate the line from the jar's height? Only roughly, and only for straight-sided jars: fill ml ≈ brim ml × (fill height ÷ internal height). Tapered or curved jars break that rule. Weigh water to the line instead. When height maths works.
The short answer
Short answer: Water to your line (g ≈ ml) × ~0.86–0.90 g/ml (approximate) = finished weight per jar. Example: 255 g → 224.4 g at 0.88; weighed pour 222 g. 500 jars at 8%: 102.12 kg wax + 8.88 kg oil net.
Order: + 3 test jars + 3% loss = 105.81 kg wax, 9.20 kg oil → 106 kg wax; 9 × 1 kg + 2 × 100 g + 15 g of Cucumber Green Tea (₹30,747.26).
Drift: Pouring 1 mm above the line on every jar adds ~2.21 kg of candle in the illustrative jar. Hold the line with a mark, a jig or a graduated jug. The water-reading method covers the band before testing.
Where you draw the line on a 300 ml jar — and what each line costs across 500 jars brim · 300 ml water to line 240 g ≈ 211.2 g finished 97.15 kg wax water to line 255 g ≈ 224.4 g finished 103.22 kg wax water to line 270 g ≈ 237.6 g finished 109.30 kg wax water to line 285 g ≈ 250.8 g finished 115.37 kg wax Illustrative straight-sided jar, 8 cm across: each 1 mm of fill ≈ 5.03 ml ≈ 4.42 g ≈ 2.21 kg over 500 jars Wax figures are net at 8% using an approximate 0.88 g/ml factor; confirm with a weighed pour.
Four illustrative fill lines on a 300 ml jar. Each line is described by the water it holds, converted with an approximate 0.88 g/ml factor, and shown as net wax for 500 jars at 8%. The shaded fill is the worked example (255 g of water to the line). The mm figure assumes a straight-sided jar with an 8 cm internal diameter — geometry, not a measurement of any CSI jar.
Straight answer
I have 500 × 300 ml jars but only want to fill them to a specific line. How do I calculate the actual wax requirement?
Ignore the 300 ml for ordering; it is the brim. Mark your line on an empty jar, tare it on a scale, and weigh water to the line: grams of water ≈ millilitres. Multiply by a labelled approximate wax factor of about 0.86–0.90 g/ml for a first estimate, then pour one scented test jar to the same line and weigh it set. In our worked example water to the line is 255 g, the estimate is 224.4 g, and the weighed pour comes out at 222 g of finished candle. At 8% that is 17.76 g of oil and 204.24 g of wax per jar, so 500 jars need 102.12 kg of wax and 8.88 kg of oil net. Three test jars and a 3% pour-loss allowance take the need to 105.81 kg of wax and 9.20 kg of oil: 106 kg of wax and 9.215 kg of oil in real packs. Then protect the line. On an illustrative straight-sided jar 8 cm across, every millimetre of over-pour adds about 2.21 kg across 500 jars, so a jug that pours consistently is worth more than a generous loss allowance. At 106 kg, Natural Soy Pearl in 50 kg bags is the cheapest listed route at ₹45,054.00.
One line: the brim is the jar's number; the line is yours — measure it, then hold it.
For a 500-jar run the wax dominates the bill. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is the only CSI wax sold in 50 kg bags (₹21,240.00) and the only one with a real bulk step (₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg). Two 50 kg bags plus a 5 kg and a 1 kg cover 106 kg for ₹45,054.00. Check its fragrance guidance on the product page before planning 8%.

The line is a decision worth kilos

On a small jar, a few millimetres of headspace is a style choice. On 500 large jars it is a line item.

A 300 ml jar can be filled to many sensible lines. A higher line gives a fuller-looking candle and a longer burn; a lower line leaves more room for the wick, a lid and the flame's heat near the rim. Whatever you choose, the choice sets the wax order, and on 500 jars the difference between two reasonable lines can be several 10 kg bags. The table uses four illustrative lines, each described by the grams of water it holds.

Illustrative · 300 ml brim · approximate 0.88 g/ml · 8% · net, before allowances
Four lines, four wax orders
Water to line Share of brim Finished per jar (approx.) Wax, 500 jars Oil, 500 jars
240 g 80% 211.2 g 97.15 kg 8.45 kg
255 g 85% 224.4 g 103.22 kg 8.98 kg
270 g 90% 237.6 g 109.30 kg 9.50 kg
285 g 95% 250.8 g 115.37 kg 10.03 kg

Each 15 g step in water to the line moves the 500-jar wax order by about 6.07 kg and the oil by about 0.53 kg. Between the lowest and highest line in the table the wax need differs by 18.22 kg — nearly two 10 kg bags. So choose the line on the finished candle's look, safety and burn time first, then order to it; do not choose it after the wax arrives to use up whatever came.

Decide the line with a lid on
If your jars take a lid, fit one to a filled test jar before you commit. The line has to leave room for the wick to stand upright under the lid without bending. A line chosen without the lid can mean trimming 500 wicks shorter than you intended, or lowering the line after the wax is bought.

Whichever line you choose, the factor in the table is still an approximation. It varies with the wax, how hot it was poured and how much it shrank. The weighed test pour is what turns the line into a number: in our example the 255 g line gave 222 g of set, topped-up candle rather than the estimated 224.4 g. Why 300 ml is not 300 g explains the gap in more detail, and planning from a water reading shows how to buy the test quantity.

When height maths works, and when it does not

Makers often ask whether they can skip the water test and calculate the fill from the jar's height. For one shape you can get close: a straight-sided cylinder holds volume in proportion to height. If the internal height from the inside base to the brim is 10 cm and your line is 8.5 cm up, the fill is about 300 × 8.5 ÷ 10 = 255 ml. That is how the worked example's 255 g line was chosen.

Illustrative geometry · straight-sided jar · 8 cm internal diameter
What a millimetre is worth
Change in fill height Volume Candle at ~0.88 g/ml Across 500 jars
1 mm 5.03 ml 4.42 g 2.21 kg
2 mm 10.05 ml 8.85 g 4.42 kg
5 mm 25.13 ml 22.12 g 11.06 kg
1 cm 50.27 ml 44.23 g 22.12 kg

The height method fails in three common cases. Tapered jars are wider at the top, so the top centimetre holds more than the bottom centimetre. Thick or domed bases mean the outside height is not the inside height. Curved shoulders near the rim change the volume per millimetre sharply just where most fill lines sit. In all three the water test is quicker than the geometry, and more accurate. Use height maths to sanity-check a water reading, never to replace it.

The ruler estimate. A maker measures the outside of a jar, 11 cm tall, and plans a 9.5 cm line: 300 × 9.5 ÷ 11 = 259 ml. The jar has a 1 cm thick base and tapers outward, so the real fill at that line is nearer 280 ml, and the order comes up short by roughly 8.5 kg of wax across 500 jars (21 ml × 0.88 × 500 × 92%). Fix: weigh water to the line in three jars; use the ruler only to mark where the line sits.

Holding one line across 500 jars

The test jar is poured carefully, once. Production jars are poured quickly, hundreds of times. The line drifts.

On a long run, pourers tend to pour a little high, because a jar that looks slightly under-filled feels like a reject and a slightly over-filled one does not. Across 500 large jars the effect is real. In the illustrative 8 cm jar, pouring 1 mm high on average adds 4.42 g a jar and 2.21 kg across the run. That is wax and oil you bought for the loss allowance, spent instead on candles that are simply heavier than planned — and at the end of the run you are short.

Illustrative 8 cm straight-sided jar · 500 jars · 8% · 0.88 g/ml
The cost of drift, in wax and oil
Average over-pour Extra candle Extra wax Extra oil Extra cost (Pearl + Cucumber Green Tea at kilo rates)
1 mm 2.21 kg 2.03 kg 177 g ₹1,453.13
2 mm 4.42 kg 4.07 kg 354 g ₹2,906.26
3 mm 6.64 kg 6.10 kg 531 g ₹4,359.38

You have two ways to handle it. Either add a drift allowance to the order — a labelled assumption such as "1 mm average over-pour" — or remove the drift with tools and checks. The second is usually cheaper. A graduated jug, a marked jig and a spot-weigh every twentieth jar cost very little against 2–7 kg of wax and oil.

1
Mark the line physicallyA pen mark or a strip of masking tape at the line on a template jar, set beside the pouring station. Pourers compare against it rather than judging by eye.
2
Pour by weight where you canPut each jar on a tared scale (₹354.00) and pour to the weighed fill (222 g in the example), not to a visual line. Slower, but drift disappears.
3
Use a jug or funnel that pours cleanlyA Candle Wax Pouring Jug (₹531.00) controls the stream; a Wax Pouring Funnel with 4 nozzles (₹1,888.00) speeds up filling several jars. Neither fixes a line by itself; both make holding it easier.
4
Spot-weigh every twentieth jarWeigh one jar in twenty once set. If the average creeps above the target by more than a few grams, correct the pourer before the next tray.
5
Record the actual averageAt the end of the run, weigh ten jars and average them. That is your real fill for the next order, and it tells you whether a drift allowance is needed at all.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. A drift allowance sells more wax. We would rather you spent ₹354.00 on a scale and ₹531.00 on a jug and poured to weight. On this run, 2 mm of average drift costs about ₹2,906.26 in extra wax and oil at kilo rates, and it makes 500 candles slightly inconsistent. The tools pay for themselves on the first run.

The 500-jar order, priced

Using the example weighed fill of 222 g, three test jars and a 3% pour-loss allowance (working assumptions), with no separate drift allowance because the line is being held by weight:

Per jar that is about ₹151.76 of wax, oil and wick at the 50 kg and 1 kg rates, before the jar, and excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST. Which wick a 300 ml jar needs depends on its diameter and your wax; CSI does not publish wick sizes per diameter, so the Thin C1 and Thick C2 lines are priced for comparison, not as a recommendation. Burn-test both before you order 520. Testing three wick sizes sets that test up; double-wick candles covers the case where one wick is not enough for a wide jar.

Buying 100+ kg of wax

106 kg can be built entirely from listed bags, but the three container soy waxes do it very differently. Chunks and CSI 464 top out at 10 kg bags; Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg. The bill for the same 106 kg:

106 kg · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Same weight, three waxes
Wax Bags Bags to open Price Published ceiling
Natural Soy Pearl 2 × 50 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg 4 ₹45,054.00 Not in our data

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 10 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg 12 ₹63,584.00 Up to 13%

Pearl is ₹8,730.40 cheaper than CSI 464 and ₹18,530.00 cheaper than Chunks on this order. That is a large gap, and it is a real one on listed prices. It is also a different wax, so the 222 g fill, the set surface and the burn all need re-testing in Pearl if your tests were poured in something else. For a run this size, ask CSI on WhatsApp to confirm that the bags you need are in stock together, and ask for a quote if you want one invoice across wax and oil; no volume discount figure is published, so do not assume one. Planning around 100 kg of wax covers the stock-and-promise side of an order this large.

Melting 106 kg is its own project
At this volume the melter decides the pace. CSI lists a 1-litre Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) and an Electric Wax Melter in 10 kg (₹21,240.00) and 20 kg (₹25,960.00) capacities. Throughput per hour is not published; time one melt of your own before you promise a delivery date.
The CSI principle
Order to the line you will actually pour.
The brim is a fact about the glass. The line is a decision, the weighed pour is its price, and holding it across 500 jars is what keeps the order you calculated equal to the wax you use.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026, and the November–February wedding season follows. A 106 kg run needs its wax confirmed early. Send us your line, your weighed fill and your scents; we will confirm stock and quote. GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documents on request.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page recommends the cheapest wax we list for a 106 kg order, and a ₹354.00 scale over a drift allowance that would sell you more wax. On a large order, those two choices are worth more to you than any discount.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, tool and melter prices are Blog 760's and the catalogue addendum's figures, verified 10 September 2026 and re-checked 24–25 September 2026. Per-jar, per-mm and batch figures are arithmetic on those prices and on the stated geometry, shown to two decimals.

The four fill lines, the 8 cm straight-sided jar, the 0.88 g/ml factor, the 222 g weighed fill, three test jars and 3% loss are illustrative working assumptions, not CSI measurements or specifications. CSI does not sell a 300 ml jar in this data; your jar's fill must be measured. For a stock check or a quote, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate wax for a jar filled to a line?
Weigh water to the line (grams ≈ ml), multiply by an approximate factor of about 0.86–0.90 g/ml, then confirm with one weighed scented pour. Multiply the weighed fill by your jar count, split at your load and add allowances.
How much wax for 500 candles in 300 ml jars?
It depends on the line. At an example weighed fill of 222 g and 8%: 102.12 kg of wax and 8.88 kg of oil net, or 106 kg and about 9.2 kg after three test jars and 3% loss. The priced order shows the packs.
Can I use jar height to calculate the fill?
Only for straight-sided jars, and only as a check: fill ≈ brim volume × fill height ÷ internal height. Tapered jars, thick bases and curved shoulders break it. Weigh water to the line instead.
How much does over-filling candles cost in bulk?
In an illustrative 8 cm straight-sided jar, 1 mm of over-pour adds about 4.42 g per jar, or 2.21 kg across 500 jars. Pouring to weight on a tared scale removes most of it.
What is the cheapest way to buy 100 kg of soy wax?
On CSI's listed prices, Natural Soy Pearl in 50 kg bags: 106 kg for ₹45,054.00, against ₹53,784.40 in CSI 464 and ₹63,584.00 in Chunks. Check Pearl's fragrance guidance first, and ask on WhatsApp for a quote beyond the listed bags.
Which wick for a 300 ml candle jar?
CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter. Burn-test candidates in your wax and jar; the Eco Thin C1 and Thick C2 are the obvious first pair. Testing three wick sizes explains a structured test.
Measure the line, hold the line
Weigh water to your line, pour to weight, and order 500 jars' worth of wax to that number.
Natural Soy Pearl at ₹21,240.00 for 50 kg, CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo, Cucumber Green Tea at ₹3,327.60 a kilo, Eco Thin C1 wicks at ₹5.90 each, a pouring jug at ₹531.00. Send your line and jar count for a stock check and quote.
