I Have a Limited Startup Budget — Should I Spend More on Better Fragrance Oils, Premium Jars or Packaging When Launching My Candle Brand?
शेयर करना
Does that mean buying the most expensive oil? No. It means buying the right tier for your price. A mid-tier oil such as Palo Santo adds ₹37.57 a candle over a value oil; the dearest tier adds another ₹50.75. Price does not measure throw — we publish no throw data — so test before you commit.
What does each allocation cost? Per 200 g candle: premium oil ₹348.46, premium jar ₹329.34, premium box ₹332.34, balanced ₹297.71. For 50 candles, ₹14,885.50 for the balanced plan. See four ways to spend.
When should I upgrade packaging? When a customer is paying for it: gift sets, corporate and wedding orders, or a retail stockist who asks for boxed stock. Price the box into that order rather than into every candle from day one.
Three places the money can go
Every new candle brand faces the same squeeze. The budget will cover a good version of one of three things — the fragrance, the jar or the packaging — and an ordinary version of the other two. Social media makes packaging look like the priority, because unboxing photographs well. Retail makes the jar look like the priority, because it sells from the shelf. Neither is wrong, but for a business that needs repeat customers on a small budget, the order of priority follows how long each part is in the customer's hands.
The fragrance is experienced every time the candle is lit, for thirty or forty hours of burning. If it disappoints, the customer does not re-buy, however beautiful the box was. The jar is on a table or shelf for as long as the candle lasts, and often longer if it is reused. The packaging is experienced once. It matters enormously for gifts — where the recipient's first impression is the box — and much less for a candle someone bought for their own home. That is the framework. The rest of this page puts rupees on it.
The upgrade ladder, priced per candle
Here is what one step up costs in each of the three places, for a 200 g candle at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹110.22 of wax) with an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90). Oils are costed at their 100 g rate. Jar prices are CSI's. CSI does not sell labels, cartons or rigid boxes, and does not list a decorated jar tier beyond the ones shown, so those figures are examples you must replace with your own supplier's quote.
| Where | Entry | Step 1 | Adds | Step 2 | Adds | Where the customer notices it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance | Royal Apricot ₹58.72 | Palo Santo ₹96.29 | +₹37.57 | Santal Noir ₹147.04 | +₹50.75 | Every burn, every repeat order |
| Jar | 200 ml Salsa jar ₹29.50 (50-pack) | White Matte ₹70.80 | +₹41.30 | Decorated jar ₹140.00 (example) | +₹69.20 | Shelf, photos, and it stays in the home |
| Packaging | Tissue ₹6.50 + label ₹8.00 (example) | Printed carton ₹45.00 (example) | +₹38.50 | Rigid box ₹120.00 (example) | +₹75.00 | Unboxing, gifting; usually discarded |
The fragrance ladder is the cheapest per step to climb at the first rung: ₹37.57 takes you from a value oil to a mid-tier one. The jar step is similar in size. The packaging step depends entirely on your printer — our ₹45.00 carton is a placeholder — but boxes tend to be priced per unit with a minimum run, which makes them the hardest upgrade to buy in small quantities. The second rung on each ladder is where budgets break: ₹50.75 for a top-tier oil, ₹69.20 for a decorated jar in our example, ₹75.00 for a rigid box.
Four ways to spend the same budget
Four plans for the same 50-candle launch, each spending its extra money in a different place. The illustrative selling price is ₹799.00. Gross margin here is (price − cost) ÷ price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. Both are calculated on materials and packaging only — they exclude labour, courier, payment fees, marketing and GST, which come off before you see a profit.
| Plan | Fragrance | Jar | Packaging + label | Per candle | 50 candles | Gross margin / markup |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · Premium oil | ₹147.04 | ₹70.80 | ₹14.50 | ₹348.46 | ₹17,423.00 | 56.4% / 129.3% |
| B · Premium jar | ₹58.72 | ₹140.00 | ₹14.50 | ₹329.34 | ₹16,467.00 | 58.8% / 142.6% |
| C · Premium box | ₹58.72 | ₹29.50 | ₹128.00 | ₹332.34 | ₹16,617.00 | 58.4% / 140.4% |
| D · Balanced | ₹96.29 | ₹70.80 | ₹14.50 | ₹297.71 | ₹14,885.50 | 62.7% / 168.4% |
Plan C is the trap. It looks premium in photographs, and costs ₹332.34 a candle — ₹34.63 more than the balanced plan — while carrying the cheapest oil and the cheapest jar. When the customer lights it, they meet the ₹58.72 fragrance, not the ₹120.00 box. Plan B has the same problem with less drama: ₹140.00 of glass around a value scent. Plan A is honest but narrow — it only works if your price supports a top-tier oil. Plan D puts a mid-tier fragrance in a jar that already looks clean and minimal, and keeps packaging to CSI tissue and a label.
Why fragrance comes first
Three reasons put fragrance ahead of jar and packaging for a new brand. The first is repeat purchase: a scented candle is a consumable, and the scent is what gets re-bought. The second is cost efficiency: the first fragrance step (₹37.57 a candle here) is cheap relative to what it changes. The third is flexibility: oil is bought by the gram, so you can upgrade one scent at a time and in small quantities. A box order usually comes with a minimum run; an oil upgrade can be a single 15 g tester.
"Fragrance first" also includes how the oil is used, not only which oil. A mid-tier oil at the right load, in a candle with a full melt pool and a proper cure, will beat a top-tier oil in a candle that tunnels. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% — those are the wax makers' stated maximums, not targets — and more oil than the candle can burn cleanly does not buy more scent. Making your first candles smell premium on a limited budget covers those levers in detail; this page is about the budget split.
What a jar is worth
The jar is the second priority because it is the candle's face. It is in every product photo, on every shelf, and often reused after the candle is finished. But a clean, standard jar already does most of that job. The White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 is a minimal, modern look that suits most brand styles. The 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar comes with a golden lug cap and drops from ₹40.12 each in a 5-pack to ₹29.50 at 50 — one of the few real pack breaks in the catalogue. Check its fill weight against your recipe; CSI publishes the 200 ml capacity, not a wax weight.
A decorated or heavy-base jar beyond these is where the budget starts to leak. Our ₹140.00 example — a placeholder for whatever a specialist supplier quotes you — would double the jar line over the White Matte. That upgrade makes sense for a luxury line with a price to match, which the ₹1,499 luxury candle guide works through. For a first launch, pick one standard jar, standardise it, and let the scents do the differentiating. Whether to test several jars or standardise one covers that decision.
When packaging earns its place
Packaging is last on a limited budget, but it is not optional. A candle needs to arrive intact, labelled and legible. The minimum is a label (your printer's quote — we use ₹8.00 as an example) and protection in transit. CSI's Premium Packing Tissue Paper, 22 GSM at 50 × 75 cm, costs ₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet, and gives a wrapped, finished look for almost nothing. Beyond that, CSI does not sell boxes, mailers or labels, so every figure is your own supplier's.
The point at which packaging moves up the priority list is when someone is paying for it. A corporate gifting order, a wedding favour order or a retail stockist who wants boxed stock will often pay a higher price per unit that covers the box. Price the box into that order. How to calculate packaging cost per order and margins on individual candles vs gift sets show how.
The balanced launch list
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 g | ₹183.00 | ₹3.66 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹367.00 | ₹3.67 | 6.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,667.00 | ₹3.67 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹300.90 | ₹6.02 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹601.80 | ₹6.02 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹3,009.00 | ₹6.02 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹6,018.00 | ₹6.02 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹166.00 | ₹11.07 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹499.00 | ₹9.98 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹919.00 | ₹9.19 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹4,599.00 | ₹9.20 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹9,120.00 | ₹9.12 | 62.50 |
| Item | Quantity | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Palo Santo Fragrance Oil 1 kg (800 g needed) | 1 × 1 kg | ₹6,018.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (9.2 kg + 5% = 9.66 kg) | 1 × 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 50 + 10 | ₹354.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 10 packs of 5 + 1 for testing | ₹3,894.00 |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper | 100 sheets | ₹650.00 |
| Labels (example ₹8.00 each — your printer's quote) | 50 | ₹400.00 |
| Total | ₹17,315.00 |
The purchase total is higher than 50 × ₹297.71 because packs round up: a full 1 kg of Palo Santo (it costs the same per gram as ten 100 g bottles, so no premium for the bigger size), a 10 kg bag of wax, a spare jar pack for testing and a full 100 sheets of tissue. The unused 200 g of oil and the spare wax carry into your second batch. If you want five scents rather than one, buy each at 100 g or 50 g instead — five fragrances on ₹20,000 works that split out.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles or packaging. We sell oil and jars but not boxes, which gives us an obvious bias toward the first two. We have tried to correct for it: this page argues against our dearest oils for most starting prices, and states plainly that premium oil is a choice of profile, not measured performance.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; Salsa jar and tissue paper were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Per-candle, margin and markup figures are arithmetic on those prices.
The ₹8.00 label, ₹45.00 carton, ₹120.00 rigid box and ₹140.00 decorated jar are examples, not CSI prices or market rates; replace every one with your own quotes. The ₹799.00 selling price is illustrative. Margins exclude labour, courier, payment fees, marketing and GST. For help matching an oil tier to your price, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
