Five thousand candles in one jar is where a candle business starts to look like a factory. The arithmetic is still one candle times five thousand — but each material wastes differently, and a gram of error per candle is five kilos of wax.

CSI materials for 5,000 sellable candles in 200 ml Salsa jars (170 g fill, assumed) plus 20 tests, with per-material wastage · ₹173.64 per sellable candle · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax and fragrance for 5,000 candles? At a 170 g fill (assumed) and 8% load, each candle is 13.6 g oil + 156.4 g wax. With 20 tests and 3% wastage: 70.32 kg of oil and 808.68 kg of wax.

How many jars and wicks? 5,095 jars (1.5% breakage on 5,020) → 5,100 bought as 51 × 100-packs. 5,120 wicks (2% spare). Plus 5,095 wick stickers.

What is reasonable wastage? Different per material, all labelled working assumptions: 3% on oil and wax (film in melters and jugs), 1.5% on glass jars (chips and cracks), 2% on wicks. Test candles are counted separately. See why they differ.

What does it cost? ₹8,68,218.00 in CSI materials — ₹173.64 per sellable candle, including tests and wastage. Labels, boxes, labour and freight are extra and are yours to price.
The short answer
Per candle: 170 g fill (assumed) at 8%: 13.6 g Orchard Pear + 156.4 g CSI 464 + 1 wick + 1 sticker + 1 Salsa jar with cap = ₹168.10 at pack rates.
Wastage: Oil 3% · wax 3% · jars 1.5% · wicks 2% · 20 test candles counted first. Working assumptions — replace with your measured losses.
Order: Oil 70.32 kg (₹2,63,530.00) · wax 808.68 kg (₹4,10,994.00) · 5,100 jars (₹1,50,450.00) · 5,120 wicks (₹30,208.00) · 5,120 stickers (₹12,800.00) · total ₹8,68,218.00.

The same five multiplications, one per material, each with its own wastage rate. Bars show each line's share of cost: wax is the biggest, then oil and jars. Because the jar comes with its golden lug cap, there is no separate lid line — one less thing to count on a run this size.
Straight answer
I have to produce 5,000 candles in the same jar — how do I calculate wax, fragrance, wick and jar requirements including reasonable wastage?
Weigh one finished candle in the jar, split it into oil and wax, count your units, then apply a separate wastage rate to each material. In a 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar we assume a 170 g finished candle (the fill weight isn't published — weigh yours). At an 8% load that is 13.6 g of oil and 156.4 g of wax. Units are 5,000 plus 20 test candles. Then: oil and wax × 1.03 for melter, jug and bottle residue; jars × 1.015 for chips and cracks; wicks × 1.02 for re-wicks. The order is 70.32 kg of oil, 808.68 kg of wax, 5,095 jars and 5,120 wicks, plus a wick sticker per jar. With Orchard Pear and CSI 464, rounded to in-stock packs, that is ₹8,68,218.00 — ₹173.64 per sellable candle. At this scale the fill weight matters more than the wastage rate: 10 g of fill across 5,000 candles is about 48 kg of wax. And at 70 kg of one oil, you are well past the listed 1 kg bottle — ask on WhatsApp for stock and a quote. Kilograms of oil for 2,000 candles covers the oil conventions in more detail.
One line: one candle weighed, five thousand counted, and a different wastage rate for each material.
The 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar comes with a golden 63 mm lug cap, in packs of 5 (₹200.60), 50 (₹1,475.00) and 100 (₹2,950.00) — ₹29.50 a jar in the larger packs. For 5,000 candles: 51 × 100-packs = ₹1,50,450.00 for 5,100 jars. Confirm stock on WhatsApp before you fix a date.

The 5,000-candle bill of materials

Five thousand is a number that forgives nothing. Build the list from one candle, one line at a time.

The scenario: a retail or corporate client wants 5,000 identical candles in one jar, one scent, over a production run of several weeks. You choose the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar because it arrives with its own golden lug cap, Orchard Pear at 8% as a value fruit scent, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, rated up to 10% fragrance load (the wax maker's stated formulation maximum). CSI doesn't publish a fill weight for the jar. We use 170 g of finished candle as a working assumption — plausible for 200 ml of soy poured below the rim — and show later what 160 g and 180 g do.

Total ₹8,68,218.00

That's ₹173.64 of CSI materials per sellable candle, with the 20 test candles and every wastage line spread across the 5,000 your client pays for. On pack rates alone — oil and wax at the listed per-kilo prices, one jar, one wick, one sticker — a candle costs ₹168.10; the difference is the tests and wastage. Labels, outer boxes, labour, freight and GST are yours to add. Which costs fall with volume is the next question most clients ask at this size.

The 20 test candles are four per thousand: two approval and reference candles at the start, then burn tests spread through the run so a drift in wick, fill or scent shows up while there is still time to correct it. They are counted before any wastage percentage, because they are candles you decided to make, not losses.

Reasonable wastage, material by material

One flat percentage across the whole list is the most common shortcut and the most common source of shortfalls. Materials fail in different ways, so each gets its own rate. All of these are working assumptions for planning — the usual guide is to plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns on oil and wax — and your own records should replace them.

Working assumptions · replace with your own measured losses
Why each material gets its own wastage rate
Material Rate here How it is lost What lowers it
Fragrance oil 3% Film in bottles, weighing beakers and jugs; a spill Pour from a few large containers, not many small ones; weigh, don't measure
Wax 3% Residue in the melter and jugs; drips; a scorched or contaminated melt A melter with a tap; jugs scraped back into the melt; clean pour station
Glass jars 1.5% Chips on arrival, cracks from thermal shock, knocks while labelling Inspect on delivery; warm jars in cold weather; label before filling if you can
Wicks 2% Tabs that lift, wicks knocked off-centre, re-wicks after a failed pour Wick stickers and centering devices; a steady pour
Wick stickers — Rarely lost; one per jar Buy in whole packs of 40
Test candles 20 counted Not a loss — approval and burn tests Fewer on a repeat run you have already proven

Soy wax that goes into a faulty candle is usually recoverable — in general practice a sunk or cracked-surface candle can be re-melted into the same scent — so wax wastage is mostly residue, not rejects. Glass is the opposite: a cracked jar is gone. That's why jars get a count-based allowance (75 jars here) and why it's worth inspecting every carton on arrival rather than on the day you pour.

Oil and wax at three wastage levels · in-stock packs
What 2%, 3% and 5% do to the order
Wastage Oil need Oil cost Wax need Wax cost Oil + wax
2% 69.64 kg ₹2,61,660.00 800.83 kg ₹4,06,427.40 ₹6,68,087.40
3% 70.32 kg ₹2,63,530.00 808.68 kg ₹4,10,994.00 ₹6,74,524.00
5% 71.69 kg ₹2,69,136.00 824.38 kg ₹4,18,605.00 ₹6,87,741.00

Going from 3% to 5% on oil and wax adds ₹13,217.00. On a first run at this scale, especially poured by hand, 5% is defensible. On a repeat run with a melter and measured losses, 3% or even 2% is realistic. Buffers for a strict delivery date covers the separate question of spare stock against supplier delays.

Measure one day, then trust the number
Weigh everything that goes into the melter and everything that comes out as candles for one full production day. The difference is your real wax wastage for that set-up. Do the same with the oil bottle. One day's measurement on a 5,000-candle run is worth more than any rule of thumb.

One gram per candle is five kilos

The wastage rate is a few percent. The fill weight can be more.
Same 5,020 units, 8% load, 3% wastage · in-stock packs
If the Salsa jar takes 160 g, 170 g or 180 g
Fill Oil need Oil cost Wax need Wax cost
160 g 66.18 kg ₹2,48,578.00 761.11 kg ₹3,88,161.00
170 g 70.32 kg ₹2,63,530.00 808.68 kg ₹4,10,994.00
180 g 74.46 kg ₹2,78,482.00 856.25 kg ₹4,36,364.00

Ten grams of fill moves this run by about 47.6 kg of wax and 4.1 kg of oil — together ₹40,322.00. That's more than the whole 3% wastage line on oil. So the order of work is: weigh the fill first, set the wastage second. Fill one jar to the line you will sell, let it set, weigh it, subtract the empty jar with its cap off.

The fill line that creeps. Over a run of weeks, pourers drift: a little higher to hide a surface flaw, a little lower when the jug is nearly empty. Across 5,000 jars a 3 g creep is 15 kg of candle. Mark the fill line on a reference jar, check-weigh one candle in every fifty, and write the weights down. Keeping batches identical covers the checks in detail.

Which wax at 800 kg?

At 809 kg, wax is the biggest line on the bill, and the per-kilo price matters more than anywhere else in the cluster. CSI's three container soy waxes price very differently at this volume:

The same wax order in three waxes
Wax Per kg Packs Cost Load ceiling in our data
Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹424.80 (5 kg+) 16 × 50 kg (₹21,240.00) + 1 × 10 kg (₹4,248.00) ₹3,44,088.00 not quoted — check the product page

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.90 at 10 kg (₹599.00 at 5 kg) 81 × 10 kg (₹5,999.00) ₹4,85,919.00 up to 13%

Natural Soy Pearl would save ₹66,906.00 on this run against CSI 464 — the only listed wax with a bulk break (5.6% from 5 kg). But its fragrance-load ceiling isn't in our data, so it isn't a like-for-like swap until you have checked the product page and burn-tested it in the Salsa jar at your load. CSI 464 has a stated 10% maximum, which the 8% here sits inside. Choose the wax on the burn test and the client's approved sample, then compare prices — never the other way round, and never mid-run.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if we recommended the dearest wax on the page. For a 5,000-candle run, the listed per-kilo difference between Chunks and Pearl is ₹1,41,831.00. If Pearl passes your burn test in this jar, that's a real saving. Test it on 20 candles before you commit 800 kg to anything — and for quantities this size, ask on WhatsApp for a quote rather than assuming the listed pack price is the final word.

Buying a run this size

Every line on this list is beyond a normal cart: 70 kg of one oil against a listing that stops at 1 kg, 810 kg of wax in 10 kg bags, 5,100 jars. The listed prices are the starting point, but a run this size should go through WhatsApp: for stock confirmation, for a quote on the whole list (no volume discount figure is published), and to ask whether the oil and wax can come from single batches.

1
Weigh the fill in the actual jarOne Salsa jar, poured to the selling line, weighed set, cap off. Replace the 170 g on this page with your number.
2
Set the recipe in gramsOil and wax per candle, the load convention written down, the wick confirmed by burn test in this jar.
3
Count units and set wastage per material5,000 + 20 tests = 5,020; 3% oil and wax, 1.5% jars, 2% wicks — or your own measured figures.
4
Price the list, then ask for a quoteThe listed-pack total is ₹8,68,218.00. Send the list on WhatsApp for stock and a quote.
5
Plan deliveries against productionJars and wax are bulky; you may not have room for 810 kg and 51 cartons at once. Agree staged deliveries from the same batches if space is the constraint.
6
Inspect on arrivalCount jars and check for chips, weigh wax and oil against the invoice, and test two candles from the delivered oil against the approved sample.

Staging deliveries is different from staging purchases. Buying the whole quantity at once — even if it arrives in two or three drops — keeps the oil and wax from the same batches and fixes your price. Buying in pieces as you go exposes you to price changes and lot changes mid-run. Buying all the wax from one batch explains why that matters, and production capacity whether you can pour 5,000 in the time you have.

The CSI principle
Weigh once. Count carefully. Waste deliberately.
At 5,000 candles, the fill weight decides the order, the unit count decides the tests, and the wastage rate decides the margin for error. Each has its own number, and none of them is a guess.

If this is your first run above a few hundred candles, start smaller in the cluster: costing a 100-candle order and sizing a 500-piece inventory use the same method with fewer zeros. Wax overage for 1,000 Diwali candles breaks the wax allowance into its parts, and which materials to secure first helps sequence a run this size.

Five thousand candles is five thousand chances for one gram to go missing. Count them all.
