I’m Buying Thousands of Pre-Tabbed Wicks for My Candle Business — What Physical and Burn-Performance Checks Should Be Part of Incoming QC?

Two stations: the bench and the burn shelf

A pre-tabbed wick is not one item. It is a length of wick, a metal tab, and a crimp that joins them, often with a priming coat over the wick. Each part can vary from one delivery to the next, and each variation shows up in a different way. The wick changes the flame. The tab changes where the candle ends and whether the wick stands up. The crimp decides whether the wick stays in the tab when you pour hot wax or pull it straight.

The simplest way to organise goods-in for thousands of these is two stations. At the bench, a physical inspection checks the things you can see, measure and pull. On the burn shelf, a short comparison burn checks whether the lot behaves like the one you approved. Physical checks catch most problems in minutes and cost nothing but time. Burn checks catch the rest, and they are the only ones that tell you what customers will experience. Both belong in the routine; neither replaces the other.

Everything below is a suggested starting point. Adjust the checks and quantities to your own products and supplier history, and write the adjusted version down so it is the same every time.

Station one: physical checks at the bench

Before you look at a single wick, check the delivery as a whole: the count against the invoice, the packaging for crushing or damp, and whether the labelling on every pack matches what you ordered. Then pull a spread-out sample from several packs, not just the one on top, and lay it beside a reference card of wicks from your approved lot.

The crimp check deserves a word. Pull a set number of wicks, perhaps ten from different packs, with a steady tug similar to what you use when straightening a wick in a pour. If any pull free, check more. A crimp that fails at the bench will fail in production, and a wick that loosens in its tab can drift off centre or lift out of the wax as it sets.

Station two: burn checks on the shelf

Physical checks show that the wicks look like your approved lot. They cannot show that the treatment, the fibre or the braid tension is the same. A short comparison burn can. Pour matched candles from one melt: one or two with wicks from the new delivery and one with a retained wick from the approved lot. Burn them together in the same attended session.

Worked example: 3,000 wicks in six bags

Suppose 3,000 pre-tabbed wicks arrive in six bags of 500. At the bench you take ten wicks from each bag, 60 in total, and run all the physical checks on them. You pull the crimp on ten of those, spread across the bags. If everything passes, three wicks go to the burn shelf: two new, one retained.

Say your comparison candle is a 180 g fill in the CSI 200 ml salsa glass jar, at ₹2,950.00 for 100, so ₹29.50 per jar; a 200 ml jar holds less than 200 g of wax, so weigh your own fill level once and use it every time. You use Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹1,996.00 for 5 kg, which is ₹399.20 per kg, and Jasmine at ₹3,923.00 per kg, at 8% of total candle weight: 180 × 0.08 = 14.4 g of oil and 165.6 g of wax. The wax costs 0.1656 × ₹399.20 = ₹66.11 and the oil 0.0144 × ₹3,923.00 = ₹56.49. Excluding the wick, each candle costs ₹66.11 + ₹56.49 + ₹29.50 = ₹152.10, and the three-candle comparison costs 3 × ₹152.10 = ₹456.30 plus the wicks.

Remember Eco Soy CSI 400's own instruction: add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir for 2 minutes. Jasmine's page gives a flashpoint of 185°C, so that window keeps you well below it. Hold the same method for every candle in the set so the only change is the wick.

The bench stage takes perhaps half an hour. The burn stage takes one attended session. Together they protect the 3,000 candles those wicks will go into. At ₹152.10 of material each before the wick, that is 3,000 × ₹152.10 = ₹4,56,300.00 of wax, oil and glass riding on the decision.

Record, label and release

Label the delivery with its status before it moves. If the bench found a sortable problem, such as a small share of off-centre tabs, a conditional release with a sorting step may be sensible; write the rule on the label. If the burn comparison showed a difference, keep the whole delivery in quarantine and escalate to a full burn.
