An oversized wick is not a strong candle with a personality. It is a failed safety check, and a failed safety check has exactly one answer.

Candle Business Guides · Batch Rescue
There is no practical way to rewick a candle whose wax has already set around the wick, and with an oversized wick that is not a commercial inconvenience — it is the reason you cannot ship the batch. The wax, the oil and all 100 jars are still yours. The 100 candles are not.
0 of 100
candles that can have the wick swapped in place and still be sold as a tested candle — while ₹23,143.64 of the batch's ₹24,593.64 in materials survives a remelt intact · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Can I rewick 100 finished candles instead of remelting them? No. Not one of them. A wick set in cured wax is bonded along its length and tabbed to the base; extracting it leaves a void, and a wick dropped into that void is an undocumented candle. Remelting is not the expensive option here — it is the only option that produces something sellable.
Why is oversized worse than undersized? Because the failure mode changes. An undersized wick disappoints. An oversized wick runs a taller, less stable flame, soots, and puts more heat into the glass and the surroundings — that is a safety question, and safety questions are not resolved by customer preference.
What does the remelt keep? On 100 × 150g candles: 13.8 kg of wax (₹8,266.20), 1.2 kg of fragrance oil (₹5,437.44) and 100 jars (₹9,440). The write-off is ₹1,450 of set wicks and stickers.
What does the repour cost?₹840 — 100 Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹590 plus ₹250 of stickers — plus a 14–21 day cure and a fresh burn test on a bracketed wick.
The short answer
Classify the fault before you cost it: an oversized wick is a safety fault, not a cosmetic one. That single classification removes three of the four options people reach for — sell as is, sell with a warning label, sell at a discount — and leaves remelt or repurpose.
Trimming does not shrink a wick: trimming controls the length above the wax. The wick's own size, and therefore the rate at which it draws fuel, is unchanged. A care card that says "trim before every burn" is good practice and is not a fix for this.
Check the stated spec, not the feel: the mismatch is often visible on the product page. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are stated as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" — put them in a 7 cm jar and you have documented your own error.
Two routes are closed and two are open, and the closed ones are closed for the same reason: an oversized wick is a safety variable you cannot document across 100 units. The choice is genuinely between repouring and repurposing, not between rewicking and remelting.
Is there a practical way to rewick 100 finished candles, or does every one have to be remelted?
Every one has to be remelted, and the reason is not stubbornness about method — it is that an oversized wick is a safety variable, so "probably fine" is not a grade you are allowed to award. A wick that has set into cured wax cannot be exchanged in place: it shreds on extraction, the void it leaves is wider than the replacement, and the new wick sits unseated in disturbed wax. On one candle you could burn it and find out. On 100 you cannot, and a batch you cannot characterise is a batch you cannot ship. The arithmetic is more forgiving than the verdict. A batch of 100 150g candles at an 8% load — 138g of wax and 12g of oil each — holds 13.8 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks worth ₹8,266.20, 1.2 kg of Woody Oud worth ₹5,437.44 and 100 Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid worth ₹9,440 — ₹23,143.64 that walks straight through a remelt. Against that, the write-off is 100 set wicks at ₹12 each and 100 stickers at ₹2.50, or ₹1,450. Repouring on Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) costs ₹840 in wicks and stickers. What it also costs is a restarted cure and a burn test you should have run the first time.
One line: zero of the hundred can be rewicked in place, ₹23,143.64 of the materials survive a remelt, and the honest bill for the second pour is ₹840 plus fourteen days.
Sizing down on a 100-candle batch? Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) at ₹590 for 100, Thick (C2) at ₹944 for 100 for the bracket, and Candle Wick Stickers at ₹100 for 40 — the per-piece price on both wick sizes is flat all the way to 1,000.
Safety fault or cosmetic fault: the only question that changes the answer
Every rescue decision in candle making starts with one sort: is this ugly, or is this unsafe? The two get completely different arithmetic.
A batch with frosted tops, wet spots against the glass or a slightly sunken middle is a cosmetic problem. You can discount it, you can sell it as a second, you can explain it on a card, and the customer's experience of burning it is unaffected. Makers do this all the time and it is honest. An oversized wick sits on the other side of the line, and once you accept that, most of the options you were weighing disappear before you have costed any of them.

Taller and less stable flame, sooting, and more heat into the glass and everything near it
The bottom two rows are the ones that matter for this batch, and the difference between them is worth naming. An undersized wick produces a customer who is disappointed. An oversized wick produces a candle that is working harder than it was designed to — more fuel drawn per minute than the wax and the vessel were matched to. That shows up as a flame that is visibly taller than the one your tested candle produced, that flickers and dances in still air, that leaves soot on the rim or the wall, that builds a carbon mushroom on the wick tip, and that makes the glass uncomfortably warm to hold. None of those is a preference. You do not put that in a box with a price on it.
The mistake: believing a care card fixes it. "Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn" is genuinely good advice and belongs on every candle you sell — CSI's own Candle Wick Trimmer page states "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn for the best results!". But trimming changes how much wick is standing above the wax, not how thick the wick is. The wick's capacity to draw fuel is a property of the wick, and it is identical on a freshly trimmed candle. Using a care instruction to manage a sizing error transfers your problem to a stranger. For what oversizing does to the burn, see candle flame too high: how to fix and why is my candle wick mushrooming.
Confirming it is the wick, on three jars, before you melt ninety-seven
Before a 13.8 kg remelt, spend three candles proving the diagnosis. It costs you ₹411.12 of wax and oil plus three jars — and the wax and oil in them are still recoverable afterwards — and it protects you from the more expensive mistake, which is remelting a batch whose real problem was something else — an unstirred oil, a jar with a different internal diameter, a pour temperature nobody recorded.
1
Pick three jars from different points in the pourFirst ten poured, middle, last ten. If the fault is a wick size it will be identical in all three. If it varies across the batch, your problem is a process inconsistency and this is the wrong guide — go to the batch-consistency question instead.
2
Measure the jar's internal diameter, not the outer rimProduct pages usually publish the outer figure. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page states "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm" and a base diameter of approximately 6.5 cm — so the wick is actually working across something between those two numbers, not across 7 cm. Note what you measure; it is the number that matters for every wick decision afterwards.
3
Burn all three for the same period in still airSame room, doors closed, no fan, no competing candle. Two to three hours is the usual window for a container candle of this size. Photograph each flame at the 30 minute mark and the 2 hour mark against a plain background — a photograph is far better evidence than a memory.
4
Record six observations, not a verdictFlame height relative to a candle you have tested; flame stability in still air; visible smoke; soot on the rim or the inside wall; carbon mushroom on the wick tip; how warm the glass is to hold. Any two of those pointing the same way on all three jars, and the wick is oversized for this jar.
5
Extinguish and stopDo not keep burning the remaining 97 to gather more data. You already have your answer, and every additional burn consumes wax you are about to recover. Cover them and move to the remelt plan.
Check the page before you check the candle
Half of all oversized-wick batches are diagnosable from the product page alone. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made state that they are "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and that the wick height is 10.16 cm. Eco Braided Wicks describe themselves as "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars" without giving a number. If one of those went into a 6.5–7 cm jar, the mismatch is documented in writing and you do not need three burn tests to be confident — although you should still run them, because they are also your baseline for the replacement.
The four options, scored honestly
Here is every route a maker actually considers at this point, with what each one really costs and what it really leaves you holding. Two of them are struck out on safety grounds before money enters the discussion; the remaining two are a genuine choice.
A wickless product and 100 empty jars back in stock
Scent still needs assessing
Open. Best where the wax is otherwise fine but you need the jars sooner
The fourth route deserves more attention than it usually gets. A wax melt has no wick, so the entire class of error you are dealing with vanishes — you are not solving the wick problem, you are stepping out of it. CSI lists Wax Melts Containers Empty in Heart and Square at ₹147.50 for 5 up to ₹2,950 for 100, a flat ₹29.50 each, and a Flower Silicon Mould / Wax Melts Mould at ₹200.60 whose page states a mould size of 21.5 × 10.4 × 1.5 cm. It is not free — the containers cost more than the wicks would have — but it returns 100 jars to your shelf immediately and gives you a product to sell while the repoured batch cures.
The 100-candle remelt bill, line by line
Set out as an invoice, because that is how the decision should be made. The left column is what the batch already contains; the right column is what you have to spend again. Note how little of the total is in the wick — and note that the largest single line, the glass, is completely unaffected by the mistake.
100 × 150g candles · what survives and what is spent again · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Batch materials, fate in a remelt, and the cost of the second pour
Worked out above: load is a percentage of finished candle weight, so a 150 g candle at 8% is 138 g of wax + 12 g of oil. Wax 13,800 g × ₹0.599/g = ₹8,266.20 (13.8 kg is not a listed pack — the nearest listed combination is one 10 kg bag at ₹5,999 plus one 5 kg bag at ₹2,995, ₹8,994 for 15 kg, and the ₹599/kg figure used here is the listed 1 kg rate, which is the ceiling). Oil 1,200 g × ₹4.5312/g = ₹5,437.44; 1 kg is the largest listed fragrance pack, so 1.2 kg is one 1 kg bottle at ₹4,531.20 plus one 500 gm at ₹2,265.60. Jars 100 × ₹94.40 = ₹9,440, listed as ₹944 per pack of 10. Set wicks 100 × ₹12 = ₹1,200. Stickers at ₹2.50 each, sold in sheets of 40 at ₹100. Second pour ₹590 + ₹300 = ₹890, which is 3.6% of ₹24,593.64. Three confirmation jars consume 414 g of wax (₹248.00) and 36 g of oil (₹163.12) — ₹411.12 of materials in total, of which the wax and oil are still recoverable. On CSI's own convention, load stated as a percentage of total wax weight, the same candle is 12 g of oil against 138 g of wax, or 8.70%.
The CSI principle
Cosmetic faults get a discount. Performance faults get an explanation. Safety faults get a remelt, and nothing else is on the menu.
Sort the fault first and the money question answers itself. Sort the money first and you will talk yourself into shipping something you would not light in your own house.
What to buy — and what to keep
Two of these four are purchases. One is a reminder that the unused wicks in your box are not scrap — they are simply the wrong wick for this jar and the right wick for a jar you may not own yet. That distinction is worth ₹1,200 or more depending on how many you bought.
1
The step down · flat ₹5.90 to 1,000 pieces
Eco Candle Wicks · Thin (C1)
The smaller of the two cotton sizes CSI lists, at ₹5.90 a wick at every pack size from 10 to 1,000. There is no per-piece saving for buying 1,000 instead of 100, which means a 100-candle rescue should buy exactly 100 plus a handful for the bracket. The page states that these wicks "pair perfectly with soy wax, beeswax, and other eco-friendly waxes" and gives no jar diameter at all — C1 and C2 exist only as variant names — so pour three jars on C1 and three on C2 and let the melt pool choose. Do not skip that because you are in a hurry; being in a hurry is how the first hundred happened.
Keep, don't scrap · the only CSI wick with a stated large-diameter figure
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
If this is the wick that oversized your batch, the hundred inside the candles are gone — but everything still in the box is perfectly good stock for the candle it was actually made for. Its page is unusually specific: "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm", with a stated wick height of 10.16 cm. The price is a flat ₹12 a wick from 10 pieces to 1,000, so there is nothing to gain by returning them and nothing to lose by shelving them. Label the box with the stated diameter in marker pen. That one sentence on the box is the cheapest prevention on this page.
If you like the wick you bought, buy the candle it fits instead of forcing it into the jar you have. This apothecary jar's page states an outer rim diameter of approximately 10 cm, a base diameter of approximately 10 cm and a fill capacity of about 500–700 g, in two listed sizes, safe for hot pour up to 85°C. That is comfortably inside the "exceeding 8 cm" description on the braided wick page, which makes it a far better home for that wick than a 7 cm jar. Note that the page gives the same dimensions for both the 500 gm and 700 gm sizes, so measure the one that arrives before you plan a wick around it.
Recovering 13.8 kg over a double boiler is two full days of standing at a stove. An imported melter at ₹21,240 for the 10 kg capacity or ₹25,960 for 20 kg turns it into two passes with the temperature held for you, which matters because the wax you are handling is already fragranced and does not benefit from being pushed hot repeatedly. Sonal Sahani's review reports "10 kgs of wax melts in mere 20-30 minutes". This is a capital purchase, not a rescue purchase — buy it because you intend to pour at this scale regularly, not because of one batch. For smaller recoveries the 1 litre Mini Melter at ₹2,360 is the proportionate tool.
Priced above: Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹59/10 to ₹5,900/1,000, ₹5.90 each throughout; Thick (C2) ₹188.80/20 to ₹9,440/1,000, ₹9.44 each throughout · Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made ₹120/10, ₹600/50, ₹1,200/100, ₹6,000/500, ₹12,000/1,000, ₹12 each throughout · Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid ₹212.40 for 500 gm and ₹250 for 700 gm · Electric Wax Melter (imported) ₹21,240 for 10 kg and ₹25,960 for 20 kg · Mini Electric Wax/Soap Melter 1 litre ₹2,360 · Wax Melts Containers Empty ₹147.50/5 to ₹2,950/100 in Heart and Square · Flower Silicon Mould / Wax Melts Mould ₹200.60 · Hot Air Gun ₹531 · Candle Wick Trimmer ₹588.82.
Repouring 100 candles needs 13.8 kg of wax recovered, not bought — but if you need fresh wax to top up, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are listed at ₹2,995 for 5 kg and ₹5,999 for 10 kg. For anything above the listed packs, bulk pricing and GST invoicing are handled on WhatsApp.
A hundred jars is the point where a rescue stops being a job and starts needing a production line.
Fifty candles you can muddle through. A hundred rewards ten minutes of layout. The specific risk at this scale is not the melting — it is losing track of which jars have been washed, which have new wicks fitted, and which have been poured, and ending up with three unwicked jars full of wax at the end of the afternoon. Work in blocks of twenty and finish each block completely before the next one starts.
The order that works: melt out twenty jars, pull and bin twenty wicks and tabs, wash and dry twenty jars, sticker and centre twenty new wicks, then pour twenty by weight. Never run two stages across the whole hundred at once. A Steel Wick Holder at ₹50 per piece in sets of 5, 10 or 25 — its page states a 3-hole layout fitting single, double or triple wick setups and that it fits most jar diameters up to 9 cm — will hold a block of wicks upright while you work down the line, and a Premium Candle Wicking Needle at ₹472 is the tool for adjusting one that has drifted before the wax sets.
Don't pour the recovered wax back at the same fill weight without weighing the total first. You put 13.8 kg in. You will get less back, because wax stays on the jar walls, the melter, the strainer and the jug. If 13.2 kg returns, then at 138 g a candle you have 95 candles, not 100 — and if you pour 100 jars at 138 g you will run out with five jars half full and no wax left. Weigh the recovered total, divide by your fill weight, and pour that many. Do not invent a loss percentage from a blog; measure yours, write it on the batch sheet, and use your own number next time. For the general case, can I re-melt a failed candle and start over covers the ground rules.
Keep six jars out of the hundred
Pour 94 for sale and 6 for yourself: three on the C1 wick and three on the C2, all at the same fill weight and all from the same melt. Burn them at day 14 and you have both a verdict on the batch and a documented wick answer for the next one. Six candles is ₹1,475.64 of materials at this batch's per-candle rate, which is a rounding error against 94 you can actually describe to a customer.
The spec check that would have caught it
Brief, because it is two lines. One: write the jar's measured internal diameter and the wick's stated diameter guidance on the same line of the batch sheet before you pour anything. When one of those lines reads "exceeding 8 cm" and the other reads "6.5 cm", the mistake announces itself. Two: when a wick page states no diameter — which is most of them, including the Eco Candle Wicks page — write "not stated, bracketed C1/C2, chose C2 on day-14 pool" instead. A batch sheet that records why you chose a wick is the only defence against choosing a different one by accident three months later.
There is no price at which an oversized wick becomes a second. Discounting is for candles that look wrong, not for candles that behave wrong.

Why trust this guide
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We have no stake in whether you ship this batch — we have already sold you the wax. What we do have a stake in is whether you are still making candles in two years, and a maker who ships a sooting, over-wicked candle to a hundred customers usually is not. The verdict on this page costs us a wick order and keeps you trading.
Every price and pack size here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing always takes precedence. Wick specifications are quoted only where the page states them: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made state "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" and a wick height of 10.16 cm; Eco Braided Wicks state "the perfect solution for large diameter container jars" with no number; the Eco Candle Wicks page states no diameter at all. We publish no size chart matching C1 and C2 to millimetres, because CSI does not publish one. Transfer loss on a remelt and the hours a repour takes are figures for you to measure, not figures we have measured for you.

Frequently asked questions
Is an oversized wick actually dangerous, or just wasteful?
It is a safety matter, which is why this guide treats it differently from a weak throw. A wick larger than the jar and wax were matched to draws more fuel per minute, and that shows as a taller, less stable flame, visible smoke, soot on the glass and a hotter vessel. Those are not aesthetic outcomes. A candle you cannot describe the burn of, across a hundred units, is a candle you do not sell — at any price, with any warning card.
Can I just tell customers to trim the wick shorter before each burn?
Trimming is good practice on every candle and it is not a fix for this. Trimming sets how much wick stands above the wax; it does not change the wick's thickness or how fast it draws fuel. Two minutes into the burn the flame is back to the size the wick dictates. CSI's Candle Wick Trimmer page recommends trimming to 1/4 inch before every burn — include that on your care card, and size the wick correctly as well.
How do I know which wick size to step down to?
By bracketing, because CSI's Eco Candle Wicks page states no jar diameter for either size. Pour three jars on Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and three on Thick (C2) at ₹9.44, identical fill weight, same wax, same oil, and burn them at day 14. Keep the one that reaches a full melt pool in roughly two to three hours with no soot and no mushrooming. The only CSI wicks with a stated diameter are the 2 inch loose wick and the braided wicks for candles "exceeding 8 cm".
Are the unused wicks in the box wasted too?
No — only the hundred set in wax. A wick that is oversized for a 7 cm jar is correctly sized for something wider, and Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are a flat ₹12 a piece from 10 to 1,000, so there is no pack penalty for shelving them. Its page states them as engineered for candles exceeding 8 cm; CSI's Apothecary Glass Candle Jar, stated at approximately 10 cm diameter, is a jar they would suit. Label the box with the stated diameter and keep them.
How many candles will I get from 13.8 kg of recovered wax?
Fewer than 100, and only your scale can say how many. Wax is left behind on the jar walls, the melter, the strainer and the pouring jug, and how much depends on your equipment and how patient you are. Weigh the recovered total, divide by your fill weight, and pour that many jars. At 138 g a candle, 13.2 kg gives 95 candles and 13.5 kg gives 97. Do not plan the pour on 100 and discover the shortfall at jar 96.
Could I turn the batch into wax melts instead of repouring candles?
Yes, and it is a legitimate answer rather than a consolation prize. A wax melt has no wick, so the fault you are dealing with does not exist in the product. Wax Melts Containers Empty are ₹29.50 each, flat from 5 to 100, and the Flower Silicon Mould is ₹200.60 with a stated mould size of 21.5 × 10.4 × 1.5 cm. You get your 100 jars back immediately and something to sell while a repoured batch cures. The scent still needs assessing on a warmer, because a melt releases differently from a flame.
Size down, pour again, test properly
Zero of a hundred can be rewicked in place — but ₹23,143.64 of the batch is still sitting in your workshop waiting to be poured correctly.
