100 saleable candles · 105 or 110?
Tests and rejects cost whole candles, pour loss costs grams of wax and oil, breakage costs glass. Built up that way, this order pours 108 candles with 5% pour loss, 111 jars and 112 wicks — closer to 110 than 105, and different on every line.

candles poured for 100 saleable (4 tests + 104 production) · plus 5% pour loss on wax and oil, 111 jars, 112 wicks · ₹24,751.20 in CSI materials · October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
105 or 110? 110 is closer, but build it per material: 108 candles poured plus 5% pour loss on wax and oil, 111 jars with 2% breakage, 112 wicks with spares.

Why is 105 not enough? If 5% of wax and oil stays in the jug, 105 candles' worth pours only 100.0 — no tests or rejects covered.

What does each plan cost? Flat 105 ₹22,944.20 · flat 110 ₹24,125.80 · built-up stack ₹24,751.20 in CSI materials.

How do I size my own? Tests + 100 ÷ (1 − your reject rate) candles, then pour loss on wax and oil, breakage on glass. See the grid.
The short answer
Answer: Neither on every line. For 100 saleable candles with 4 tests and 3% rejects, pour 108; add 5% to wax and oil for pour loss and 2% to jars for breakage. 110 is closer than 105.
Why: Tests and rejects consume whole candles; pour loss consumes only wax and oil; breakage consumes only glass. One flat number over-buys some lines and under-buys others.
Method: Tests (whole candles) → ÷ (1 − reject rate) → × (1 + pour loss) on wax and oil → × (1 + breakage) on glass → round to in-stock packs. Copy the template.

From 100 net candles: 4 test candles take you to 104, a 3% reject allowance on production to 108 poured, and 2% breakage to 111 jars. The flat 105 and 110 marks sit either side, and neither accounts for wax and oil left in the jug. All allowances are labelled working assumptions — replace them with your own records.
Straight answer
I need 100 saleable candles — should I actually purchase enough materials for 105 or 110 pieces to cover testing, breakage and rejects?
Neither flat number fits every material — but if you must choose, 110 is closer. Build the buffer from what it has to cover: test candles and rejects use whole candles, pour loss uses only wax and oil, breakage uses only glass. With 4 test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss and 2% breakage (labelled working assumptions), 100 saleable 200 g candles need 108 candles poured, wax and oil for those plus 5%, 111 jars and 112 wicks. A flat 105 under-buys: once 5% stays in the jug, 105 candles' worth of wax pours only 100.0. A flat 110 is close on wax but slightly short on oil, jars and spare wicks. Rounded to real CSI packs — Natural Soy Pearl, Fresh Strawberries, White Matte jars and Eco Thin C1 — the built-up order is ₹24,751.20, against ₹22,944.20 for flat 105 and ₹24,125.80 for flat 110. Replace the assumptions with your own reject and loss records as soon as you have them.
One line: count tests and rejects in candles, pour loss in grams, breakage in glass — then round to packs.
For 100 saleable candles, neither flat number is right on every line. Built up from 4 test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss and 2% glass breakage, this order pours 108 candles, needs 111 jars and 112 wicks — and once rounded to CSI packs it costs ₹24,751.20, against ₹22,944.20 for a flat 105 and ₹24,125.80 for a flat 110. If you must pick one number, 110 is the closer; 105 under-buys wax, oil and glass.

Why 105 versus 110 is the wrong question, and what to ask instead

A buffer is not one number. It is three different losses that hit three different materials.

"Buy for 105" or "buy for 110" treats the buffer as one percentage laid over everything. But the things it has to cover behave differently. Test candles use a whole candle's worth of every material. Rejects — a sunken top, a crooked wick, a wet spot on the glass — also use a whole candle of every material, but only as a share of production. Pour loss is wax and oil left in the jug and on the thermometer: grams, not candles, and nothing to do with jars or wicks. Breakage is glass only. A single flat number is too generous on some lines and too thin on others.

The better question is: for each material, what does the buffer have to cover? This series answers it with one fixed order of allowances — tests as whole candles, then rejects as a division on the production candles, then pour loss on wax and oil, then breakage on glass, and only then rounding to real packs. The figures here — 4 test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% breakage and 4 spare wicks — are labelled working assumptions for a maker without records yet. The example candle is 200 g at 8% in Natural Soy Pearl Wax with Fresh Strawberries in a White Matte Glass Jar.

The CSI principle
Count tests and rejects in candles, pour loss in grams, breakage in glass.
Each loss lands on the materials it actually consumes. Applied in that order, nothing is counted twice and nothing is missed.

What a flat 105 and a flat 110 actually cover

Now price the two flat plans the way most people mean them: materials for 105 (or 110) complete candles — wax, oil, jar, wick and sticker each — rounded to real CSI packs, with no separate pour-loss line. Then ask how many candles each material really covers once 5% of the wax and oil stays in the jug. The built-up stack is in the last column for comparison; the target is 108 candles poured (4 tests + 104 production).

Read the coverage columns against the target. A flat 105 looks safe on paper, but its wax only pours 103.5 candles once pour loss is taken out — fewer than the 108 this order needs — its oil pours 101.2, and it buys 105 jars against a need of 111. A flat 110 is closer: its wax pours 108.7 candles, which is enough, but its oil pours only 107.1, it is 1 jar short once 2% breakage is allowed, and 2 wicks short of the spares. The built-up stack covers every line and costs ₹625.40 more than flat 110 and ₹1,807.00 more than flat 105.

The hidden gap in "105 is enough". Five extra candles sounds like a 5% buffer, but if 5% of the wax and oil stays in the jug, 105 candles' worth of wax pours only 100.0 candles — zero test candles and zero rejects covered. Fix: keep pour loss as its own percentage on wax and oil, and let the candle buffer cover only tests and rejects. Rounding to packs sometimes rescues a thin plan — here the 105 wax rounds up to 2 × 10 kg — but that is luck, not planning.

Your own records decide between 105 and 110

The right buffer is the one your last batch would have needed. Until you have a last batch, assume and record.

The candle part of the buffer is tests plus rejects. The grid below shows how many candles you must pour for 100 saleable ones at different combinations. Pour loss, breakage and spare wicks are separate and are not in this grid. Find your own test-candle count and reject rate — from your production records if you have them, or the labelled assumptions if you do not.

Candles to pour = tests + 100 ÷ (1 − reject rate), rounded up · pour loss, breakage and spares are separate
When 105 is enough and when you need 110 or more
Test candles 0% rejects 2% rejects 3% rejects 5% rejects 8% rejects 10% rejects
0 100 ✓105 103 ✓105 104 ✓105 106 109 112
2 102 ✓105 105 ✓105 106 108 111 114
4 104 ✓105 107 108 110 113 116
6 106 109 110 112 115 118

The cells marked ✓105 are where a 105-candle buffer covers tests and rejects. Plain cells sit between 105 and 110; bold cells need more than 110. A maker who pours no test candles and runs at 2–3% rejects really can plan on about 105 candles' worth — plus pour loss. A maker on a first run, with 4 test candles and an honest 5% reject rate, needs 110 candles poured before any pour loss: 110 exactly. At 8% or 10% rejects, even 110 is short — and the right response is to fix the rejects, not to buy more glass.

Record three numbers on every batch
Candles poured, candles sold as first quality, and grams of wax and oil left over or scraped out. After three batches you will have your own reject rate and pour loss, and you can replace this page's assumptions with yours. The burn-test budget post covers how many test candles a fuller programme needs, and the wax-versus-glass buffer post goes further on why fragile glass deserves its own buffer.
1
Fix the saleable count and the fill100 saleable candles at 200 g — weigh a test pour in your jar first, because CSI publishes no fill weight for the White Matte jar.
2
Add test candles as whole candlesCount them, do not percentage them: pre-production checks, a retained candle per batch, any client sample. This page uses 4.
3
Divide production by (1 − reject rate)100 ÷ 0.97 = 103.09, rounded up to 104. Rejects use a whole candle of every material, so this count drives wax, oil, jars and wicks alike.
4
Add pour loss to wax and oil only108 candles × 184 g wax × 1.05 = 20,865.6 g; × 16 g oil × 1.05 = 1,814.4 g. Jars and wicks do not stay in the jug.
5
Add breakage to glass and spares to wicks108 × 1.02 → 111 jars; 108 + 4 → 112 wicks. Both are labelled allowances, kept separate from rejects.
6
Round each line to in-stock packs, lastRounding early and then adding a percentage counts the slack twice. Round once, at the end, and write down the leftover each pack leaves.

What the extra buffer costs, and what running short costs

The money side cuts both ways. Buying the built-up stack instead of a flat 105 costs ₹1,807.00 more on this order. In exchange, every line covers its target. If the flat 105 runs short — say your first run needs 4 test candles and sees 5% rejects, so 110 candles must be poured while its wax covers only 103 — the cost is not the materials — it is the candles you cannot deliver, a second small order, and the risk that a re-order arrives from a different oil or wax lot. One candle's materials at production rates cost about ₹211.50 (wax, oil, wick and jar, excluding labour and packaging); 7 missing candles is ₹1,480.52 of materials but 7 unfilled orders.

Three pack quirks are doing quiet work in that table. Wax: Natural Soy Pearl Wax is ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg and ₹424.80 from 5 kg — the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk step — so the 10 kg bags are the cheapest kilos and the flat 110 and the stack land on the same 2 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg. Wicks: Eco Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick at every pack, and with the 10-pack out of stock, 110 wicks are bought as 1 × 50-pack + 3 × 20-pack for ₹649.00 — the same as for 105. Jars: White Matte is sold in packs of 5 and 10 at ₹70.80 a jar, so the jar line moves in steps of five.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The built-up stack sells you ₹1,807.00 more than a flat 105. If your own records show fewer rejects and less pour loss than these assumptions, use your figures and buy less — the arithmetic is the same, only the inputs change. What we will not do is tell you a bigger buffer is "safer" by default: leftover oil is scent-specific stock you may not use soon, and leftover glass takes space. Buy the buffer your records justify.

Where the leftover goes if every candle comes out right

If the run goes perfectly — no rejects, no breakage, the 4 test candles all used — the built-up stack leaves materials behind. That is the point of a buffer, but it is worth knowing which leftovers are flexible and which are not before you decide its size.

If rejects and breakage turn out to be zero · leftover valued at the per-unit price paid
What a perfect run leaves, and how easy it is to use
Material Leftover (perfect run) Value How flexible
Soy Pearl wax 907 g ₹386.47 Very — shared by every scent and the next run
Fresh Strawberries oil 103 g ₹369.81 Scent-specific — only useful if you reorder this scent
White Matte jars 11 ₹778.80 Flexible if you keep the same jar
Eco Thin C1 wicks 16 ₹94.40 Flexible while the wick suits the jar

The oil is the one line where a generous buffer is a real cost, because a leftover 200 g of one fragrance only becomes saleable candles if you make that scent again. That is why the stack applies pour loss to oil as a percentage instead of rounding the oil buffer up to the next candle count. The minimum-leftover post shows how to pick bottle sizes that keep the oil remainder small without under-buying.

Frequently asked questions

How many extra candles should I make to allow for rejects?
Divide the saleable count by (1 − your reject rate) and round up: 100 ÷ 0.97 = 103.09, so 104 production candles at 3% rejects. Add test candles on top as whole candles.
What percentage of wax is lost when pouring candles?
It depends on your equipment and batch size; 3–5% is a common planning range, labelled as a working assumption. Weigh what is left in the jug on a few batches to get your own figure.
Should I add a buffer for jar breakage?
Yes, on glass only. At a labelled 2%, 108 candles poured need 111 jars. Wax, oil and wicks do not break.
Is a 10% buffer too much for candle making?
For an experienced maker with low rejects it can be generous; for a first run with 4 test candles and 5% rejects it is barely enough (110 candles before pour loss). Use your records.
Why does my wax run out before the candles?
Usually because wax was bought as candles × fill weight with no separate pour-loss allowance, or the full candle weight was counted as wax. Split oil and wax first, then add pour loss in grams.
Is leftover candle wax and fragrance wasted?
Wax, jars and wicks shared across your range carry into the next run. Leftover fragrance oil is scent-specific, so keep the oil buffer as a percentage rather than whole extra candles.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax). The 200 g candle, 8% load, 4 test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, 4 spare wicks and example lid/label costs are labelled working assumptions; "flat 105/110" means materials for that many complete candles with no separate pour-loss line. Per-candle material cost uses Soy Pearl at the 10 kg rate and Fresh Strawberries at the 1 kg rate. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw, burn or cure data for any oil or wax, and no volume discount beyond the listed packs. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
