I Need to Make 250 × 200 g Candles at 8% Fragrance Load — How Many Kilograms of Soy Wax and Fragrance Oil Should I Order?

The numbers for 250 × 200 g

At 8% of the finished weight, a 200 g candle is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. Two hundred and fifty of them are 50,000 g of finished candle: 46,000 g of wax and 4,000 g of oil. The title asks for kilograms, so: 46 kg of wax and 4 kg of oil, net. The mistake to avoid is ordering 50 kg of wax because 250 × 200 g = 50 kg, then buying 4 kg of oil on top — that buys 4,000 g of wax the candles cannot hold, about 22 candles' worth.

The title gives no allowances, so this page uses three test candles (a wick pair and a keeper — see the test-candle post for bigger test rounds) and 4% pour loss, both labelled working assumptions. Tests are added as candles first; the 4% multiplies the whole melt once.

So the order is 48.41 kg of wax and 4.21 kg of oil. The shortcut version asks for 52.62 kg of wax, which is 4,209.9 g more — more than a whole 5 kg bag at ₹2,995.00. That single substitution — 184 g instead of 200 g — is worth one bag on this order. The hub page sets out the full five-step method.

Choosing the bag mix

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks come in 500 g (₹299.00), 1 kg (₹599.00), 5 kg (₹2,995.00) and 10 kg (₹5,999.00) on the 24 September 2026 pull. Per kilo that is ₹598.00, ₹599.00, ₹599.00 and ₹599.90 — flat, with the 10 kg bag fractionally the dearest. There is no bulk break to chase, so the bag mix is a choice between fewest bags, lowest spend and least leftover. The table puts every sensible option side by side.

The spread between the dearest and cheapest sensible options is ₹944.00, and most of that is simply 1,500 g less wax. If Sandalwood — or any scent in the same wax — is going to be poured again within a month, the 1,586 g left over from a 50 kg order is not waste: it is the start of the next batch, and ten 5 kg bags buy it at ₹29,950.00. If this is a one-off order, the 48.5 kg mix keeps only 86 g on the shelf.

Four kilograms of Sandalwood

Sandalwood Fragrance Oil is ₹5.43 a gram at 50 g and ₹5.03 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg alike (₹502.68, ₹2,513.40, ₹5,026.80). There is no reason to buy a fifth kilo to save money, because it saves nothing. You need 4,209.92 g, and the cheapest cover is 4 × 1 kg + 2 × 100 g + 50 g.

At 16 g per candle, the oil in one 200 g Sandalwood candle costs ₹80.43 at the 1 kg rate — 30.1% of the candle's material cost. Four kilos of oil is ₹21,383.96, less than the wax order but the line most worth checking twice. For fragrance-only questions at this scale, whether a 5 kg pack covers 250 × 180 g works the oil side in detail; CSI's listed oil packs stop at 1 kg per listing, and anything larger is quoted on WhatsApp.

The priced order

Wicks and jars are counted, not weighed. The order below covers 253 candles (250 + 3 tests) with CSI's White Matte Glass Jar (51 packs of 5 = 255 jars, two spare) and 260 Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (seven spare, a labelled allowance). The jar's fill weight is not published — confirm 200 g with a weighed pour — and wick size per diameter is not published, so the test candles are where the wick is confirmed.

One 200 g Sandalwood candle costs ₹267.34 in materials at list rates (₹110.22 wax, ₹80.43 oil, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar). The order divides to ₹280.09 per sellable candle, carrying the tests, 4% loss and spare stock. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra in both. If you take five 10 kg bags instead of the tight mix, the total rises by ₹944.00 and you keep 1,586 g of wax for next time.

At 6% or 10%

Every two points of load moves about a kilo between the wax and oil lines on this order. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, so all three loads are within the stated maximum — which is a ceiling, not a recommendation. Whether 10% smells stronger than 8% in your jar is a burn-test question; CSI publishes no throw data for Sandalwood or any other oil.

What to do with the spare

Every rounded order leaves something. On the tight mix it is 86 g of wax and 40 g of oil — enough for about 0 more candles if both are used together. Label it with the lot and date and use it first in the next run of the same wax. On a 50 kg order the spare is 1,586 g, about 8 candles' worth of wax, and at 8% it would take 98 g more oil on top of the spare oil to use it all.

If you find you regularly end a run with a few kilos over, it is a sign the allowance is too generous for your process. Track the real loss and bring the allowance down; the 3% wastage post shows how a smaller figure changes the order at 500 candles. And if you are going the other way — starting from wax already on the shelf — 50 kg of wax at 5% wastage works out how many 200 g candles it can make.
