Production Calculator · 300 × 150 g at 10% + tests
Three hundred 150 g candles at 10% are 40.5 kg of wax and 4.5 kg of oil. Test candles are real candles at the same formula, so they go into the count — not into a vague percentage. Six tests and two retained samples add 2.6% to the pour.
42.83 kg
of wax and 4.76 kg of oil for 300 × 150 g at 10% with 6 test candles, 2 retained samples and 3% loss · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax for 300 × 150 g candles at 10%? 40,500 g net (135 g per candle). With 6 tests, 2 retained samples and 3% loss, 42,827.4 g.

How much fragrance oil? 4,500 g net (15 g per candle), 4,758.6 g with the same allowances.

How much extra for test candles? Count them as candles at the production formula. Six 150 g tests at 10% need 834.3 g of wax and 92.7 g of oil with 3% loss — about ₹153.44 of wax and oil each at small-pack rates.

Should I buy tests separately? Yes. A ₹1,356.20 test kit first, then production, costs the same in wax and oil as one order — and lets you change wick or load before buying 4.7 kg of oil. See buying in two stages.
The short answer
Wax: 300 × 135 g = 40,500 g net · 308 candles × 150 g × 1.03 × 90% = 42,827.4 g · 43 kg of Chunks across two stages (₹25,793.00).
Oil: 300 × 15 g = 4,500 g net · 4,758.6 g with tests, samples and loss · Cinnamon Vanilla, ₹21,971.60 across both stages.
Tests: Six candles (three wicks × burn/keep) plus two retained production samples — counted as candles, not a percentage. The hub page sets out the order of steps.
The test round for 300 × 150 g at 10%: six candles, three wicks, one decision Every test candle is a full 150 g candle at the production formula · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Cinnamon Vanilla Thin C1₹5.90 eachburnkeepThick C2₹9.44 eachburnkeepCotton braided₹12.00 eachburnkeep Test round, materials 6 × 150 g = 900 g + 3% loss = 927 g 834.3 g wax 92.7 g oil Buy: 1 kg Chunks + 100 g oil + 3 wick packs Stage 1: ₹1,356.20 Production after the test: 300 candles + 2 retained samples = 302 Test and retained candles are 2.6% of everything poured — small enough to include, large enough to plan for.
Six test candles, two per wick option: one burnt, one kept as the reference. Each is a full 150 g candle at 10% of finished weight, so together they need about 834 g of wax and 93 g of oil with 3% loss. Wick sizes per jar are not published, which is why a wick comparison is the most useful test for this order. The six-candle plan and the two retained samples are working assumptions.
Straight answer
I need to make 300 × 150 g candles at 10% fragrance — how much wax and fragrance should I purchase including extra material for test candles?
At 10% of finished weight each 150 g candle is 135 g of wax and 15 g of oil, so 300 candles need 40,500 g of wax and 4,500 g of oil, net. Test candles are real candles at the same formula, so add them as candles, not as a percentage. A sensible round is six tests — three wick options, one to burn and one to keep — plus two retained samples from production (working assumptions). That makes 308 candles; a 3% loss allowance on the melt gives 42,827.4 g of wax and 4,758.6 g of oil. Buy it in two stages: a ₹1,356.20 test kit (1 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 100 g of Cinnamon Vanilla, three wick packs), then production for 302 candles — 4 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg of wax and 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g of oil. The wax and oil cost ₹47,764.60 either way, and the split lets you change wick or load before committing to kilos.
One line: tests are candles, not a percentage — six at the production formula, bought first.
For 300 candles of 150 g at 10% with a six-candle test round, two retained samples and 3% loss: 42,827.4 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and 4,758.6 g of fragrance oil. Buy it in two stages — a ₹1,356.20 test kit first, then production — and it costs exactly the same as one order.

The base numbers for 300 × 150 g at 10%

At 10% load, every 150 g candle carries 15 g of fragrance. The wax is the other 135 g — and that is the number to multiply.

Three hundred 150 g candles are 45,000 g of finished candle. At 10% of that finished weight, the net need is 40,500 g of wax and 4,500 g of fragrance oil. The most common shortcut — 300 × 150 g = 45 kg of wax, with oil on top — buys 4,500 g of wax the jars cannot hold, an 11.1% over-buy. The 100 × 200 g at 10% post walks through that mistake in detail; this page concentrates on the other half of the title: how much extra to buy for test candles.

The CSI principle
A test candle is a real candle.
It uses the same wax, the same oil at the same load, the same jar and a real wick. So it belongs in the purchase calculation as a whole candle — not as a vague percentage on top.

How many test candles, and why six

Test candles answer questions you cannot answer on paper. At 10% in a 150 g jar the biggest open question is the wick — CSI does not publish wick sizes per jar diameter, so the only way to choose is to burn. A useful test round compares the wick options you are genuinely considering, with one candle of each to burn and one to keep as a reference. With three wick options that is six candles. On top of that, this page keeps two retained samples from the production pour — one to burn-check the batch, one to keep in case a customer raises a question later.

Test and sample plan · working assumptions, adjust to your own questions
What each extra candle is for
Candles Count Poured Purpose
Wick test — Eco Thin C1 2 Before production Burn one, keep one
Wick test — Eco Thick C2 2 Before production Burn one, keep one
Wick test — Cotton Braided 2 Before production Burn one, keep one
Retained production samples 2 With production Batch check + reference
Total extra candles 8 2.6% of all candles poured

Each test candle costs about ₹153.44 in wax and oil at the small-pack rates you buy tests in (Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, Cinnamon Vanilla at ₹4.84 a gram in 100 g), plus its jar and wick. Six of them are well under two thousand rupees. That is the cost of not discovering a tunnelling wick on candle number 150. If you are also undecided on the load, add a second row of tests at 8%; the 10% ceiling post shows how the oil and wax orders move if 8% or 9% wins.

Test at the production formula, not a guess
The test is only useful if it matches production exactly: the same wax lot if you can, the same oil at 10% of finished weight, the same jar, the same fill line. A test poured at 10% of the wax (a true 9.09%) will not tell you how a 10% candle burns.

The worked table with tests included

Tests and retained samples join the count first; the 3% loss (a labelled working assumption) then multiplies the whole melt. The table shows the order both ways — tests counted in, and tests forgotten — so you can see what forgetting them does.

300 × 150 g · 10% of finished weight · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Cinnamon Vanilla
From candles to grams, with the test round
Line Candles Finished weight Wax (90%) Oil (10%)
Production, net 300 45,000 g 40,500 g 4,500 g
+ 6 wick-test candles 306 45,900 g 41,310 g 4,590 g
+ 2 retained samples 308 46,200 g 41,580 g 4,620 g
+ 3% loss (assumption) 308 47,586 g 42,827.4 g 4,758.6 g
Tests forgotten: 300 × 1.03 300 46,350 g 41,715.0 g 4,635.0 g

With the test round the order is 42.83 kg of wax and 4.76 kg of oil. Forget the tests and the order drops by 1,112.4 g of wax and 123.6 g of oil — and the 3% loss allowance quietly gets spent on test candles instead of on pour loss, so the production run comes up short. That is the failure this title is really asking about.

"I'll just add 5% and call it tests." A percentage is the wrong tool for tests. Tests are a fixed number of candles, so their share of the order falls as the order grows: eight extra candles are 2.6% of 308, but only 0.8% of 1,000. Adding a percentage for tests over-buys on large orders and under-buys on small ones. Count the tests as candles; keep the percentage for pour loss. Development and QC samples on 1,000 × 200 g shows the same principle at a larger scale.

One order or two? Buying the test kit first

The safest way to buy for a test round is to buy the test round first. On this order it costs nothing extra.

If the test changes your mind — a different wick, or a lower load — you do not want 4.8 kg of oil already on the shelf. So split the purchase. Stage 1 buys only what the six test candles need, in the smallest sensible packs. Stage 2 buys production once the test is burnt, for 302 candles (300 + 2 retained samples), and uses up the test kit's leftovers.

The two-stage wax and oil cost ₹47,764.60, identical to the single order, because the test kit's 1 kg bag and 100 g bottle are exactly the extra slices the single order would have bought anyway. Stage 1 leaves 165.7 g of wax and 7.3 g of oil, which go into production. What you gain is the option to change course: if the test says 8%, Stage 2's oil drops to about 3.7 kg and you have not bought the difference.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A single order of 43 kg of wax and 4.8 kg of oil is a bigger sale today. We would still rather you bought the test kit first. On our listed prices the split costs nothing extra on this order, and it protects you from owning several kilos of an oil at a load your test candles rejected.

Rounding to Chunks bags and Cinnamon Vanilla bottles

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are flat-priced: ₹598.00 a kilo in the 500 g bag, ₹599.00 in 1 kg and 5 kg, ₹599.90 in 10 kg. Production's 41,993.1 g rounds to 4 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹25,194.00); eight 5 kg bags + 2 × 1 kg would be ₹25,158.00, ₹36.00 less in four more bags. Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, so a 10% formula has three points of headroom — the reason this page uses Chunks for a 10% order rather than CSI 464, whose stated maximum is exactly 10%.

Cinnamon Vanilla Fragrance Oil is a warm festive gourmand at ₹4.84 a gram in 100 g, ₹4.60 in 500 g and ₹4.55 in 1 kg — a real 5.9% step from 100 g to the kilo. Production's 4,665.9 g rounds to 4 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g for ₹21,487.80. At 15 g per candle, oil is ₹68.32 of every candle at the kilo rate.

The full priced order

For a 150 g candle the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap is a reasonable fit — its 200 ml brim holds roughly 172–180 g of soy wax on a labelled 0.86–0.90 g per ml approximation, so 150 g sits below it. The fill weight is not published; the test round is where you confirm it. Jars: 308 poured + 2 spare = 310. Production wicks: 302 + 18 spare = 320 of whichever type wins (Thin C1 priced below).

How the test allowance scales

Because tests are counted in candles, their share shrinks as orders grow. The same eight extra candles at other order sizes:

Eight extra candles (6 tests + 2 retained) · 150 g at 10%
Test share by order size
Order Extra candles Share of all poured Extra wax Extra oil
100 × 150 g 8 7.4% 1,080 g 120 g
300 × 150 g 8 2.6% 1,080 g 120 g
750 × 150 g 8 1.1% 1,080 g 120 g
2,000 × 150 g 8 0.4% 1,080 g 120 g

On a 100-candle order the test round is 7.4% of everything poured; on 2,000 it is 0.4%. That is exactly why a fixed test percentage misleads. For larger orders, 2,000 × 150 g and 2,000 × 150 g at 10% fragrance run this candle size at scale, and testing three wick sizes across five fragrances plans a much bigger test matrix.

Count the tests in candles. Count the loss in per cent. Never swap the two.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A single large order today is better business for us than a small test kit followed by production. This page recommends the test kit anyway, and shows from our own listed prices that the split costs you nothing extra on this order.

Wax and oil prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; Salsa jar prices from the catalogue pull of 24–25 September 2026; wick prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026, with packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. The test-candle materials, allowances and pack rounding are plain arithmetic.

The six-candle test round, two retained samples, 3% loss and spare wicks and jars are working assumptions. Wick size per jar, cure times and throw are not published by CSI — they are exactly what the test round is for. Frequently asked questions

How many test candles should I make before production?
Enough to answer your open questions, usually two per option: one to burn, one to keep. With three wick options that is six. Add a second set if you are also comparing loads.
Should test candles be included in my wax calculation?
Yes — as whole candles at the production formula, added before the loss percentage. Leaving them out means the loss allowance gets used by tests and the production run comes up short.
How much wax for 300 candles of 150 g?
At 10% fragrance, 40,500 g net (135 g each). At 8%, 41,400 g (138 g each). Add tests and loss, then round to bags.
How much fragrance oil for 300 candles at 10%?
For 150 g candles, 4,500 g net — 15 g each. With six tests, two retained samples and 3% loss, 4,758.6 g.
What fragrance load can Luxury Soy Wax Chunks take?
The wax maker rates Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%. That is a formulation maximum, not a target; burn-test to find the load that suits your jar.
What is a retained sample in candle making?
A candle pulled from the production pour and kept with the batch record — one to burn-check the batch, one to keep in case a customer raises a question later. It is counted in the pour like any other candle.
Test first, then produce
Six test candles at the production formula, bought as a small kit — then 302 candles of production.
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks from ₹299.00, Cinnamon Vanilla from ₹106.20, Eco and Cotton Braided wicks from ₹59.00 and Salsa 200 ml jars from ₹200.60 for 5. The Stage 1 test kit for this order is ₹1,356.20. Tell us your wick options and we will help plan the round.
