Jar QC · sampling plan
Screen every jar for chips and cracks, measure a well-drawn sample for size, and write down the bands you accept against before you open the first carton.
20 jars
suggested dimensional sample, 4 from each of 5 cartons
Quick answers — read this first
How many of 500 jars should I measure? As a suggested starting point, 20 jars, 4 from each of 5 cartons and different layers. Extend to 50 if any reading falls outside your band.

Do I need to inspect every jar? For chips, cracks and suspected cracks, yes. Safety defects are screened on all 500; only dimensions are sampled.

Which jar dimension matters most? Internal diameter half-way down, because it sets the melt surface your wick was approved for. Rim opening and internal depth come next.

How long does goods-in take for 500 jars? In the worked estimate, about three hours: 83 minutes of visual checks, an hour of measuring, plus capacity checks and recording.
The short answer
Plan: 100% visual for safety defects; 20-jar dimensional sample drawn across cartons and layers; 3 kept as references.
Measure: Internal diameter, rim opening, internal depth, outer height and diameter, rim wall, base thickness, flatness, lid fit and weight.
Escalate: Extend to 50 jars if a reading falls outside your band; sort by carton or quarantine if the problem is widespread.

Straight answer
I Received 500 Candle Jars — What Dimensions Should I Measure on a Sample Before Accepting Them for Production?
Split the job in two. Inspect all 500 for safety defects such as chips, cracks and suspected cracks, because sampling cannot guarantee to find the one that matters. Then measure a dimensional sample, as a suggested starting point 20 jars, 4 from each of 5 cartons and different layers. On each, record internal diameter half-way down, rim opening, internal depth, outer height and diameter, rim wall thickness, derived base thickness, flatness, lid fit and empty weight. Keep 3 as labelled reference jars after a capacity check. Compare with written bands against your reference jar, and extend to 50 jars if anything falls outside.
One line: screen all 500 jars for chips and cracks, measure ten dimensions on 20 jars drawn across cartons, and decide against bands you wrote down in advance.
The CSI digital scale at ₹354.00 covers the empty-weight check in the sampling plan; confirm it against a known weight before each session.

Two kinds of check: every jar for safety, a sample for size

You do not need to measure 500 jars. You do need to look at every one of them.

A goods-in plan for 500 jars mixes two very different jobs, and confusing them is the commonest mistake. Safety defects, meaning chips, cracks and anything that might be a crack, are screened on every jar, because a single one reaching a candle is unacceptable and sampling cannot promise to find it. Dimensions are different. Glass from one production run tends to vary within a band, so a well-drawn sample tells you where that band sits without measuring all 500.

So the plan has a 100% visual stage and a sampled dimensional stage, with a clear rule for what happens when the sample finds something unexpected. Formal sampling standards exist for industrial inspection, and larger operations may adopt one. For a candle business receiving a few hundred jars at a time, a simple written plan applied the same way every time is more useful than a table nobody follows.

What CSI publishes about jars
CSI jar pages give approximate outer dimensions only, such as a height and width, and in a few cases a base or rim diameter. No internal diameter, glass thickness, jar weight or tolerance is published for any container. Your first shipment's measurements become your baseline, which is why the first dimensional check is worth doing thoroughly.

The dimensions worth measuring, and why each one matters

Measure what affects the candle, the lid, the label or the packing. Everything below can be done with a vernier caliper that has outside jaws, inside jaws and a depth rod, plus your scale. CSI does not sell calipers; any generic one will do.

Suggested starting point
Dimensional checks for a candle jar
Dimension How to measure Why it matters
Internal diameter half-way down Inside jaws, two readings at 90 degrees Sets the melt surface; the single most important figure for your wick
Rim opening (internal) Inside jaws at the rim Wick-centring tools, lid seating and how the top of the candle looks
Internal depth Depth rod from rim to the centre of the floor Fill line, headspace and wick length
Outer height Outside jaws or a flat edge and rule Box size, shelf fit and label position
Outer body diameter Outside jaws at the widest point Label wrap length and packaging fit
Rim wall thickness Outside jaws across the rim wall at two points Hints at glass thickness and evenness
Base thickness (derived) Outer height minus internal depth Fill height and heat behaviour near the end
Stands flat Place on a flat surface and press lightly at the rim A rocking jar tilts the wick and the finished candle
Lid fit Fit and remove the lid Customer experience and dust protection
Empty weight Your scale, without lid A quick overall check on glass quantity

Measure the same way every time. Decide where "half-way down" is for each jar style and mark it on the reference jar, hold the caliper square to the glass rather than at a slant, and record readings to the nearest 0.1 mm if your caliper allows. Small differences in technique between two people can easily look like a change in the glass, so the method belongs in the written plan alongside the bands.

Brimful capacity is also worth knowing, but it needs water, and water inside a candle jar must be completely dried before any wax goes near it. The simplest approach is to measure capacity on three jars, then keep those three permanently as your reference jars rather than returning them to production.

A sampling plan for 500 jars

Here is a plan you can use as a suggested starting point and adjust after a few shipments. It assumes the 500 jars arrived in several cartons, which is usual.

1
Stage 1: visual on all 500.Every jar is checked for chips, cracks, suspected cracks, large or open bubbles, and heavy scratching. Use a cotton pad round each rim and a side light. Remove anything doubtful and log it.
2
Stage 2: dimensional sample of 20.Take 4 jars from each of 5 cartons, choosing from different layers, not the top. If there are fewer cartons, spread 20 jars across all of them. Measure every dimension in the table on each jar.
3
Stage 3: capacity and reference.Take 3 of the 20 for a brimful water capacity check. Label them with the invoice number and date received, dry them, and keep them as reference jars for future orders.
4
Stage 4: compare against your bands.Compare the minimum, maximum and average for each dimension with your reference jar and the bands you have set. Most shipments pass here.
5
Stage 5: escalate if needed. If any sampled reading falls outside your band, extend the sample to 50 jars across all cartons. If the problem is confined to certain cartons, sort by carton; if it is spread throughout, quarantine the shipment and contact the supplier.
Sampling error. Measuring the 20 jars nearest the top of the first carton opened. Those jars came from the same small part of the run and the same position in the packing, so they tell you little about the rest of the order.

Worked example: time and money on a 500-jar delivery

Suppose the order is 500 clear 200 ml salsa jars with 63 mm lug caps, bought as five packs of 100 at ₹2,950.00, which is 5 × ₹2,950.00 = ₹14,750.00, or ₹29.50 per jar. How much time does the plan above cost, and how much is at stake?

Illustrative time budget
Goods-in time for 500 jars
Stage Suggested working estimate Time
Visual on all 500 About 10 seconds per jar once practised: 500 × 10 = 5,000 seconds About 83 minutes
Dimensions on 20 About 3 minutes per jar for ten readings: 20 × 3 60 minutes
Capacity on 3 About 5 minutes each including drying 15 minutes
Recording and decision Filling in the sheet and signing off About 15 minutes
Total About 3 hours

The per-jar times are estimates to replace with your own once you have timed a shipment. Three hours sounds like a lot until you compare it with what the jars will carry. If each finished candle has a material value in the low hundreds of rupees once wax, fragrance and wick are added, 500 candles carry far more value than the glass itself, and a dimensional drift found after pouring cannot be undone.

The sample also sets you up for later shipments. If three consecutive orders all sit comfortably inside your bands, you might reasonably cut the dimensional sample to 10 jars while keeping the 100% visual check. The visual stage does not shrink, because safety defects do not become rarer just because dimensions have been steady.

Setting your acceptance bands and recording the result

You cannot accept or reject against a figure you have not written down. The bands below are a suggested starting point for jars in the 6–7 cm range, compared with your own reference jar, and should be adjusted once your burn records show what your wick and lids actually tolerate.

Suggested starting point
Acceptance bands against your reference jar
Dimension Accept Investigate
Internal diameter Within ±1 mm Beyond ±1 mm: burn-test the extremes
Rim opening Lid fits every sampled jar Any lid that will not seat
Internal depth Within ±2 mm Beyond ±2 mm: check fill line and wick length
Outer height and diameter Within ±2 mm Beyond ±2 mm: check labels and boxes
Stands flat No rocking Any rocking jar
Empty weight Within about 5% of reference Beyond 5%: measure walls and base

Record the invoice number, date received, product name exactly as listed, carton count, who inspected, every sampled reading, the visual defect tally, and the decision: accept, conditional release, quarantine or reject. File it with the reference jars' labels. If you need to raise the shipment, for CSI orders send the readings and photographs on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926).

Hold every supplier to the same plan, including us. The point of measuring is that the numbers decide, not the name on the invoice or how long you have been buying from them.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general quality-control practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly what CSI does not publish (lot numbers, certificates of analysis, tolerances), and labels every sample size, tolerance or retained quantity as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from September 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a lot number, a jar's internal diameter or a wick's burn rate — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the size of candle jars in a bulk order?
Measure a sample drawn across cartons with a caliper: internal diameter, rim opening, internal depth, outer size, rim wall and weight. Compare against a reference jar and written bands. Draw the sample from different cartons and layers.
What sample size should I use for jar inspection?
As a suggested starting point for 500 jars, 20 for dimensions, extended to 50 if anything is out of band. Formal sampling standards exist if you need a more rigorous plan.
Should I measure candle jar capacity with water?
You can, on a few jars, but water must be dried completely before wax goes in. Keeping the water-tested jars as permanent references avoids the risk. Label them with the invoice number and date.
What tools do I need to inspect candle jars?
A vernier caliper with inside jaws and depth rod, a reliable scale, a bright side light, cotton wool pads, and a record sheet. CSI sells a scale but not calipers.
Can I reduce inspection once a supplier is consistent?
You can reduce the dimensional sample after several consistent shipments, for example to 10 jars. Keep checking every jar for chips and cracks regardless. A later shipment that moves outside your bands restores the full sample.
Does CSI provide jar dimensions and tolerances?
CSI jar pages give approximate outer dimensions only. No internal diameter, thickness, weight or tolerance is published; ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) and record the answer. Your first measured shipment becomes the baseline for every later order.
