Fragrance Change · Two-Oil Blend
You approved a blend, never its halves. When one component changes, re-prove the blend as a unit: same ratio, same total load, old blend as the control. The maths is simple — total oil × share — and a premix keeps the small components accurate.
9.6 g + 6.4 g
Bergamot Amber + neroli in one 200 g candle at an 8% total load, 60 : 40 by weight · the load applies to the blend, not to each oil
Quick answers — read this first
Retest the entire blend? Yes — as a unit. Test the new blend against the old blend at the same ratio and total load. You do not need to test the new oil on its own.

How do I calculate the grams? Total oil = candle weight × load; each component = total × share. 200 g at 8% = 16 g; 60 : 40 = 9.6 g + 6.4 g. See the blend maths.

Why premix? Small components are hard to weigh accurately. ±0.05 g is 0.78% of 6.4 g but only 0.25% of the 20.2 g in a 50.4 g premix.

What does it cost? New components only: ₹502.00 to test both CSI nerolis. Full nine-candle kit from scratch ₹2,954.02.
The short answer
Answer: Yes. The blend is the approved unit. KEEP jar and wax data; REPEAT scent balance, throw and storage; CONFIRM burn lines; NEW premix-stability and documents.
Maths: Total = W × L; component = total × share. 200 g × 8% = 16 g → 9.6 g Bergamot Amber + 6.4 g neroli. Never apply the load to each oil.
Test: Three 50.4 g premixes (control + two candidates), three 200 g candles each, one wax bag, four paired cycles. Change ratio or load only in a later round — 4829.
Replacing one oil in a two-oil blend: the candle only ever sees the blend Bergamot Amber 60 : Neroli 40 · total load 8% of a 200 g candle · component grams = total oil × share Bergamot Amber · 60% unchanged Neroli · 40% old → new supplier One 200 g candle at 8% 16 g of blend = 9.6 g + 6.4 g 184 g wax One fuel: flame, pool, heat and throw respond to the blend as a whole So the blend is re-proven as a unit — not the new neroli on its own
The bar is the blend by weight: Bergamot Amber unchanged, the neroli share swapped to a new supplier. In the candle both become one fuel — 9.6 g + 6.4 g inside 16 g of blend at 8% of 200 g — so flame, pool, heat and throw respond to the mixture, and the mixture is what gets re-proven.
Straight answer
I replaced one fragrance in a two-oil blend — do I need to retest the entire finished blend?
Yes — retest the blend as a unit, not the new oil on its own. Every approval you hold was earned by the mixture: throw, flame, pool, jar heat and storage were measured on the blend, never on each half at its share. In the candle the two oils become one fuel, and in general candle-making practice components can interact in the bottle and in the wax, so a replacement that behaves well alone can still shift the blend. Keep the ratio, the total load, the wax, wick and jar fixed; change only the one component; and judge the new blend against the old blend. The maths: total oil = candle weight × load, component = total × share, so a 200 g candle at 8% and 60 : 40 holds 9.6 g of Bergamot Amber and 6.4 g of neroli — never 8% of each. Make a 50.4 g premix per candidate so small weights stay accurate, pour three candles per premix beside three with the old blend, and run four paired burn cycles. Testing CSI's Neroli and Neroli Signature Grade side by side costs ₹502.00 in new oil.
One line: blend first, then test — the approval belongs to the mixture, never to its parts.
If CSI's neroli is the replacement, the blend test below needs 20.2 g of it per candidate premix. That is 2 × 15 g of Neroli Fragrance Oil (₹236.00) — cheaper than one 50 g bottle at ₹342.20. Testing Neroli Signature Grade alongside it adds 2 × 15 g (₹266.00).

Why the blend, not the component, is what you retest

You approved a blend. You never approved its halves.

When a two-oil candle was developed, every test was run on the mixture: the throw, the flame, the pool, the jar heat, the storage. Neither oil was ever proven on its own at its share of the load, because nobody sells a candle that is 60% of a fragrance. So when one oil changes, there is no component-level result to fall back on. The only approval you ever held was for the blend, and the blend has changed.

It also matters that the candle does not burn two oils side by side; it burns one liquid. Once blended and mixed into wax, the two fragrances become part of a single fuel. In general candle-making practice, fragrance components can interact in the bottle and in the wax — affecting how the mixture smells, how it holds in the wax and how it burns — so a new neroli that behaves perfectly well on its own can still shift the blend. Those are commonly described mechanisms, not measurements; CSI publishes no burn, throw or compatibility data for any oil or combination.

The answer to the title is therefore yes — retest the finished blend as a unit, with a blend-level control (the old blend) beside the new blend, both at the same total load. What you do not need is a separate study of the new neroli on its own: that result would not tell you what the blend does. The 10% blend-change post explains why even a small share can move the system; the three-oil post covers rebuilding a blend when the scent balance has to be re-found.

The CSI principle
Blend first, then test. The approval belongs to the mixture at its total load, never to its parts.
Keep the unchanged oil, the ratio and the total load fixed; change only the one component; judge the new blend against the old blend.

The blend maths

CSI's convention applies the load to the blend, not to each oil: the total fragrance in the candle is W × L, and each component is that total times its share. For a 200 g candle at 8%, the blend is 16 g. At 60 : 40 that is 9.6 g of Bergamot Amber and 6.4 g of neroli, with 184 g of wax. A common error is applying 8% to each oil separately, which puts 16 g of each — 32 g, or 16% of the candle — into the jar. That is above the stated maximum of both CSI waxes that publish one: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 13% and CSI 464 at 10%.

Bergamot Amber 60 : Neroli 40 · 200 g candle · CSI convention: load = share of finished weight
Component grams per candle and per 100-candle batch
Total load Blend per candle Bergamot Amber Neroli Bergamot Amber / 100 candles Neroli / 100 candles
6% 12 g 7.20 g 4.80 g 720 g 480 g
8% 16 g 9.60 g 6.40 g 960 g 640 g
10% 20 g 12 g 8 g 1,200 g 800 g

Two practical consequences follow. First, the components are small: 6.4 g of neroli per candle is easy to weigh inaccurately. On a scale that reads to 0.1 g, the rounding alone can be ±0.05 g, which is 0.78% of the neroli in a single candle. Second, the fix is a premix: blend the oils in a bottle first, in a quantity large enough that the rounding hardly matters, and then dose the premix at 8%. In a 50.4 g premix the neroli is 20.2 g, and the same ±0.05 g is only 0.25% of it. Check your own scale's resolution; CSI's listed scale does not publish one in this data.

Write the ratio by weight
A blend written as "3 parts to 2" or in drops is not reproducible. Write it as a weight ratio (60 : 40) and as grams per candle (9.6 g + 6.4 g). Oils differ in density, so a ratio by volume is a different blend from the same ratio by weight.

The retest matrix for a blend

Retest matrix · one component of a two-oil blend replaced · ratio, total load, wax, wick and jar frozen
What a component swap does to a blend's approvals
Result Status Why
Jar fill, wax routine KEEP Unchanged
Unchanged oil (Bergamot Amber) on its own Not applicable It was never approved alone; its blend results are void with the blend
Premix stability (clear, no separation) NEW New pair of oils in one bottle
Blend scent balance vs old blend REPEAT The swapped component may sit differently in the accord
Total load 8% CONFIRM Blend strength may differ
Hot and cold throw REPEAT Blend-level
Flame, carbon, soot, pool, jar heat CONFIRM The fuel has changed
End-of-life CONFIRM One pair to the end
Sweating and colour in storage REPEAT New mixture in the wax
Documents for the new component NEW MSDS / IFRA for the new oil
Cost per candle NEW New component price

The second row is the one people argue with: "the Bergamot Amber hasn't changed, so its results stand." There were never results for it alone in this candle, only for the blend it was part of. That is not a reason to test it alone now; it is a reason to test the new blend as a whole.

Adjusting the ratio in the same round. If the new neroli seems a little stronger, it is tempting to pour 65 : 35 straight away. Now the component and the ratio have both changed, and the result belongs to neither. Keep 60 : 40 for the first round. If the scent balance is off, rebalance in a second round, as the three-oil post describes.

The blend-level test

Three blends in three bottles, nine candles, one wax bag. The old blend is the control.
1
Make three premixes by weightControl: old neroli + Bergamot Amber at 60 : 40. Candidate 1: CSI Neroli + Bergamot Amber. Candidate 2: Neroli Signature Grade + Bergamot Amber. Each 50.4 g: 30.2 g + 20.2 g. Use Bergamot Amber from the same bottle in all three.
2
Check the premixesClose, label and leave them side by side. Before pouring, and again after a day or two (a labelled working check, not a standard), look for cloudiness, layering or sediment, and smell each blind on a strip against the control.
3
Pour nine candles from one bagThree candles per premix, 16 g of premix into each 200 g candle, from one bag of Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 on one day, with your approved wick and the wax maker's temperature instructions. No fragrance ceiling is published for CSI 468 in this data — 8% is your approved load; check the product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's figure.
4
Cure together and compare the scent blindAt your normal cure point, compare each candidate with the control blind: same, weaker, stronger, or different in character. A difference in character is a balance issue; a difference in strength is a load issue.
5
Four paired burn cyclesEach session burn one control and one of each candidate side by side, about 3–4 hours with full cool-down (a commonly used cycle, not a standard). Record flame, carbon, soot, pool, jar-side heat, consumption and blind hot throw.
6
Carry the leading candidate to the endContinue one candle of the best-matching candidate and one control to the end of usable wax; keep the rest for storage checkpoints.
Scoring sheet · each candidate blend relative to the control blend
Blend-level scores
Line Candidate 1 · CSI Neroli Candidate 2 · Neroli Signature Grade Pass rule
Premix appearance As clear and uniform as the control
Blind scent (strip and cold candle) Not reliably distinguishable, or accepted as a product decision
Hot throw (blind 1–5) Within the control's spread
Flame, carbon, soot No worse than control
Pool and jar heat No worse than control
Storage: droplets, colour Same as control

Decision rule: choose the candidate that passes every line; if both pass, choose on cost and supply security. If the only failure is scent character, go to a ratio round. If throw is weaker or stronger but everything else passes, adjust the total load — never the ratio and the load together — with a small ladder as in the load-ladder post. If a burn line fails, the new component does not suit this blend in this system; the mushrooming post shows how to diagnose it.

The unchanged oil is not a fixed point. In a blend, everything moves when one thing moves.

Two 15 g bottles of Neroli (₹236.00) cover the premix and cost less than one 50 g bottle (₹342.20) — one of the few cases where the smallest size is the right test buy. In production, at the 1 kg rates, the blend in a 200 g candle costs ₹94.79 with Neroli and ₹100.83 with Neroli Signature Grade: 9.6 g of Bergamot Amber at ₹5.44 a gram plus 6.4 g of neroli. The difference is ₹6.04 a candle. Neroli's per-gram price is flat from 100 g to 1 kg; Neroli Signature Grade's falls slightly, from ₹7.99 to ₹7.60.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We list two nerolis and would happily sell you the dearer one as "closer" to a premium original. We do not know that it is — we publish no composition or throw data for either. Test both in the blend for ₹502.00 and let the control decide. If the cheaper one matches, it saves ₹6.04 on every candle.

Release and record the new blend

The approved spec for a blend needs more than a recipe name. Record each component's exact listed name and supplier, the weight ratio (60 : 40), the grams per candle (9.6 g + 6.4 g), the total load (8% of finished weight), the premix size and date, the wax bag, the wick and the test result. Label the premix bottle with the same information; a premix without a label is an unapproved fragrance.

Keep a retained sample of the new component's lot and a small retained premix. If the other component ever changes too, change it in a separate round with this blend as the control — never both at once. The one-variable-at-a-time post explains why, and the same-name reformulation post covers what to do when a component keeps its name but a new lot arrives.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell single oils, not blends, and we do not publish composition, compatibility or throw data for any combination. We list two nerolis and do not claim the dearer one is the closer match — the blend test decides.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices are those verified on 10 September 2026 (Blog 760). Component grams, premix quantities, weighing-error percentages and cost per candle are arithmetic.

The 60 : 40 ratio, 8% total load, premix size, three candles per blend and the premix check are working examples and practices, not standards. CSI 468 has no published fragrance ceiling in this data. Custom blends are your own formula. For help, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fragrance oil amounts for a blend?
Apply the load to the blend: total oil = candle weight × load, then each component = total × its share. A 200 g candle at 8% in a 60 : 40 blend is 16 g in total — 9.6 g + 6.4 g.
If I change one oil in a blend, do I need to retest the whole blend?
Yes. The blend was the approved unit; its parts were never approved separately. Test the new blend against the old blend at the same ratio and total load.
Should fragrance load be calculated for each oil or the whole blend?
The whole blend. Applying the load to each oil multiplies the fragrance in the candle — two oils at 8% each is 16% of the candle, above the stated maximum of every CSI wax that has one.
What is a fragrance premix?
The blend made up in a bottle first, by weight, then dosed into the wax as one oil. It makes small components more accurate and keeps every candle in a batch identical.
How long should a fragrance blend sit before I use it?
There is no published figure. As a working check, look at the premix before pouring and again after a day or two for cloudiness or layering, and compare its smell blind with the control.
Are CSI's Neroli and Neroli Signature Grade the same oil?
No — they are two separate products at different prices (₹6.66 and ₹7.99 a gram at 100 g). Test each in your blend against the control rather than assuming either matches your old neroli.
Re-prove the blend
Same ratio, same total load, one component changed, old blend as the control.
