Wax melts · cold and hot throw
Cold throw sells the box, hot throw sells the reorder. Test three CSI container waxes at one load to find the one that does both without sweating.
9%
one load for all three waxes, just inside CSI 464’s stated 10% of wax weight
Quick answers — read this first
Which wax property matters most for cold throw? Holding the oil without sweating. A melt that leaves an oily film smells strong but is losing oil and will draw complaints. Only then compare how much scent each wax releases while solid.

Why test all waxes at 9%? 9% of total weight is 9 ÷ 91 = 9.9% of wax weight, inside CSI 464’s stated 10% and well inside 13% for Chunks and CSI 468, so the wax is the only variable.

When do I check cold throw? After the stated 48–72 h soy minimum, then at day 7 and day 14 as suggested check points, inside your real outer packaging.

Does a higher load always improve cold throw? No. Past the wax’s comfortable load the oil sweats out. Test the winning wax at a second load, up to 11.5% of total for 468 or Chunks.
The short answer
Key property: Oil retention without sweating, then scent release while solid, then readiness to liquefy in the warmer.
Test design: Lavender at 9% in CSI 464, CSI 468 and Chunks, scored boxed and unboxed at day 3, 7 and 14.
Example cost: ₹100.60 per 70 g clamshell in Chunks at 9% with Lavender, packaging excluded; weigh your own fill.

The day 7 and day 14 points are suggested; the 48–72 h minimum is the figure CSI states for soy.
Straight answer
I Want My Wax Melts to Have Strong Cold Throw Inside the Package and Strong Fragrance When Melted — Which Wax Properties Matter Most?
The property that matters most is how well the wax holds the oil without sweating, because a melt that marks its clamshell is losing fragrance and looks faulty. After that, compare how much scent each wax gives off while solid and how quickly it liquefies in the warmer. CSI publishes no retention figures, so test CSI 464, CSI 468 and Chunks with one oil at a suggested 9% of total weight, inside every wax’s stated maximum. Score each sealed in your real packaging at day 3, 7 and 14, then in the warmer. Push only the winning wax to a second load.
One line: the best melt wax is the one that holds its oil dry and still lets it go, proven boxed and in a warmer.
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states a maximum load of 13% of wax weight, giving it headroom for a second-round load test.

One melt, two different jobs

The box sells the first melt; the warmer sells the second order.

You are asking a single piece of wax to do two jobs that pull in slightly different directions. In the package, the melt has to give off enough scent at room temperature that the customer smells it the moment the box opens. In the warmer, it has to release a lot more fragrance once it is molten. The first job is cold throw, the second is hot throw, and a melt can be good at one and ordinary at the other.

Cold throw depends on fragrance escaping from solid wax into the small air space inside the clamshell and the box around it. Hot throw depends on fragrance leaving a warm liquid pool. The wax property that links both is how well the wax holds the oil: tightly enough that it does not sweat out onto the plastic, loosely enough that it still lets the scent go. You cannot read that property off a product page. CSI does not publish binding or retention figures for any wax, so you measure it with a simple, repeatable test.

The wax properties that matter, in order

1. Holding the oil without sweating

This is the first gate. A melt that leaves an oily film on the clamshell will smell strong in the box, but it looks faulty and the oil is being lost rather than stored. A sweating melt is a false win in a cold-throw test, so score it as a failure even if it smells powerful. The stated loads give you the outer limit to work within: CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 13% of wax weight, CSI 468 up to 13%.

2. Releasing scent while solid

Two waxes holding the same oil at the same load can smell quite different at room temperature. Container soy waxes are a sensible starting family for this, and CSI’s own reviewers comment on throw in its oils; one Lavender buyer wrote, “Quality of fragrance is very good. Cold through and hot though both are perfect.” That is one customer’s experience in their own system, not a promise for yours, which is why the test below runs three waxes side by side.

3. Liquefying readily in the warmer

For hot throw, a wax that goes liquid sooner starts releasing sooner. CSI 468 is the only CSI container wax with a published melt point, 50–53°C, so it gives you one fixed reference while you time the others.

4. Surface finish

Cold throw comes from the exposed surface. A cavity shape with more surface area, such as a shallow square, presents more wax to the air than a deep one of the same weight. This is a packaging and mould choice, not a wax property, but it changes the result enough that you should keep it constant across your test.

A cold-throw and hot-throw test you can repeat

Keep the load the same in all three waxes so that the wax is the only variable. A suggested 9% of total weight works for all three, because 9 ÷ 91 = 9.9% of wax weight sits just inside CSI 464’s stated 10%. Use Lavender, rated “Strong” on its own product page, as the test oil. Make 120 g of each wax: 109.2 g of wax plus 10.8 g of oil. Three batches need 32.4 g of oil, which a 50 g pack covers.

Test kit
Round one: same oil, same load, three waxes
Item Pack Price Used in this round
CSI 464 flakes 500 g ₹260.00 109.2 g
CSI 468 coconut soy 500 g ₹325.00 109.2 g
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 500 g ₹299.00 109.2 g
Lavender fragrance oil 50 g ₹270.00 32.4 g
Wax melt clamshells Pack of 10 ₹295.00 3 to 6
Total ₹1,449.00

That is 260 + 325 + 299 + 270 + 295 = ₹1,449.00. The leftover wax from each 500 g pack carries straight into round two, so nothing is wasted.

1
Pour and let the melts set completely.Close the clamshell only once the wax is fully cool to the touch. Lidding warm wax can trap moisture and give you a dull, uneven surface.
2
Pack them the way a customer receives them.Put one clamshell from each batch into your real outer packaging, whether that is a box, sleeve or pouch. Keep a second clamshell from each batch unboxed on a shelf as a comparison.
3
Run the first box test on day 3.CSI states 48–72 h as the minimum cure for soy. Open each box in a room without other scents, hold it at about 30 cm, and score from 1 to 5. Use the same distance every time.
4
Repeat on day 7 and day 14.These are suggested check points. Ask two other people to score blind, with the batches labelled only by letter.
5
Run the warmer test last.Use a 20 g piece from each batch in the same warmer and score at 15, 30 and 60 minutes from a fixed spot.
Score sheet
What to record for each batch
Check When How Record

Hot throw Day 14 20 g piece in your warmer Score at 15, 30, 60 min

Round two: push the winner, not all three

Once one wax clearly wins on both scores without sweating, test it at a second load. If the winner is CSI 468 or Chunks, a suggested comparison is 9% against 11.5% of total weight; 11.5 ÷ 88.5 = 13.0% of wax weight, which is the stated ceiling for both. If 464 wins, it is already near its ceiling at 9%, so put the effort into oil choice instead.

The oil page and the wax page both count
Where an oil’s product page states a wax-melt range, for example 10–15%, that is the page’s stated range for the oil. The wax maker’s stated maximum also applies: CSI 464 up to 10%, Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%. Work to whichever is lower.
Strong box scent, weak warmer scent. The wax is releasing well when solid but the oil may be light in base notes. Try a deeper oil in the same wax before raising the load.
Weak box scent, strong warmer scent. The wax is binding tightly. Check that the clamshell sealed fully cool and that the cure was long enough, then compare a higher-surface cavity before changing wax.
Strong everywhere, but an oily clamshell. Over the wax’s comfortable load. Drop back to the last dry load. A product that marks its own packaging will draw complaints however good it smells.

What the winning recipe costs per clamshell

CSI does not publish the fill weight of its clamshell cavities, so weigh a full one yourself. As an example only, suppose your filled clamshell holds 70 g of melt. At 9% in Chunks bought as 10 kg, the wax is 63.7 g × (₹5,999.00 ÷ 10,000 g = ₹0.5999) = ₹38.21. The oil is 6.3 g × (₹5,221.00 ÷ 1,000 g = ₹5.221) = ₹32.89 at the Lavender 1 kg price. The clamshell at the 100-pack price is ₹2,950.00 ÷ 100 = ₹29.50. Together that is ₹38.21 + ₹32.89 + ₹29.50 = ₹100.60 per clamshell, before your outer packaging, label, labour, shipping and GST.

Notice that the clamshell itself costs almost as much as the oil. That is why a richer cold throw usually comes from a better-chosen oil and a well-sealed outer pack before it comes from more fragrance.

Buy this to test

One 500 g pack each of CSI 464, CSI 468 and Chunks, a 50 g pack of one strong oil, and a 10-pack of clamshells. Add 50 g packs of two more oils for round two only after the wax is chosen.

Buy this once validated

The winning wax in 10 kg packs, approved oils in 500 g or 1 kg packs, and clamshells in packs of 100. Keep one sealed clamshell from each production batch for a month as a retained sample, so you can compare future batches against it.

Argue against interest
An oily clamshell is a failed melt, not a strong one.
Sweating oil makes the box smell powerful for a week and then looks like a defect on the shelf. Score it as a failure and drop the load, even though it means selling less oil.
Test the melt in the box it ships in, not on your workbench.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

how do i make wax melts with strong cold throw
Use a wax that holds oil without sweating, cure for at least the stated 48–72 h, seal clamshells only once fully cool, and test in your real outer packaging. Compare CSI 464, CSI 468 and Chunks at the same load before raising it.
which soy wax has the best cold throw for wax melts
CSI publishes no cold-throw data for its waxes, so test them. Run CSI 464, CSI 468 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 9% of total weight with one oil and score each boxed at day 3, 7 and 14.
why do my wax melts smell strong in the box but weak in the warmer
The wax may release scent well when solid but the oil may be light in base notes, or the warmer may not be fully melting the piece. Time the melt to liquid, then try a deeper oil in the same wax.
why is there oil on my wax melt clamshell
The load is above what that wax holds comfortably at room temperature, or the melt was lidded while warm. Drop to the last dry load and close clamshells only after the wax is fully cool.
should i put wax melts in a box or pouch for better cold throw
Outer packaging keeps scent in the air space around the clamshell, so the first sniff is stronger. Test cold throw inside the exact packaging you will sell in, and keep one unboxed sample for comparison.
how much does a wax melt clamshell cost to make
As an example, a 70 g clamshell in Chunks at 9% with Lavender costs ₹100.60 in wax, oil and clamshell at bulk CSI prices. Weigh your own fill, then add packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
