Cost per candle · Price first or design first
Design-first candles are how most makers start: choose the scent you love, the jar you like, then work out a price. It produces beautiful candles that sit at awkward prices. Working backwards from the price produces a range that earns — and still leaves room for one candle designed without compromise.
₹6.16/g
the most a ₹799 candle can pay per gram of fragrance at an 8% load and a 50% contribution target · CSI prices plus labelled example costs
Quick answers — read this first
Should I design the candle first or start with the price? For a range, start with the price and work backwards; that is called target costing. Keep design-first for one hero or limited candle, and then check where its price lands. Most profitable ranges use both, in that order.

How does working backwards from price work? Target price − target contribution − non-material costs − wick, jar and lid − wax = the oil budget. At ₹799 that is ₹98.60, or ₹6.16 a gram at 16 g of oil. See the cascade.

Which oils fit a ₹799 candle? Any oil at or below ₹6.16 a gram at the pack you buy: Jasmine, Woody Oud, Sandalwood, Lavender, Bergamot Amber and Dark Vanilla Oud all fit at 100 g. Santal Noir and the inspired-by oils fit the ₹1,499 ceiling of ₹13.05. The fit table.

What happens if I design first? You find the price afterwards. A 200 g Khamrah Qahwa candle in a White Matte jar needs about ₹1,095.58 to hit the same 50% target; at ₹799 it keeps ₹257.14. That is fine if it is meant to be a ₹1,199 candle — and a problem if it was meant for ₹799.
The short answer
Rule: Price-first for the range: target price → target contribution → allowable cost → oil ceiling. Design-first for a hero candle, then test its price against your tiers. Never finalise a formula before its price is checked.
The ceilings: 50% contribution target, 8% load, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: ₹399 in an 85 g tin → ₹8.35/g · ₹799 in a 200 g White Matte → ₹6.16/g · ₹1,499 in a 300 g example jar → ₹13.05/g of oil.
Levers if nothing fits: Change the jar (a capped jar removes the lid), the fill, the load (at 6% the ₹799 ceiling rises to ₹8.02/g) or the price. Never the target without deciding to. The tier post shows what happens when a tier is not checked.
Working backwards from ₹799 to the most you can pay for fragrance ₹799.00Target price₹399.50Target contribution50%₹95.98Packaging, labour, packing, fee₹94.70Wick, jar, lid₹110.22Wax (184 g)₹98.60Oil budget ₹98.60 ÷ 16 g = ceiling of ₹6.16 per gram of oil · packaging, labour and lid are examples
Start at the price and remove, in order: the contribution you want to keep, every non-material cost, the fixed materials (wick, jar, lid) and the wax. What is left is the fragrance budget; divide by the grams of oil to get the most you can pay per gram. Packaging, labour, per-order packing and the White Matte lid are example figures; the 50% target is illustrative.
Straight answer
I want to build a profitable candle range — should I design the candle first and calculate the price later, or start with a target selling price and formulate backwards?
For the range, start with the price. Target costing works backwards: take the price your customer will pay, remove the contribution you need to keep, remove every non-material cost, remove the wick, jar and lid, remove the wax, and what is left is the most you can spend on fragrance. At ₹799 for a 200 g candle in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and a White Matte jar, with a 50% contribution target and example packaging and labour, that leaves ₹98.60 for 16 g of oil — a ceiling of ₹6.16 a gram. Woody Oud, Sandalwood, Lavender and Bergamot Amber fit; a ₹15.06-a-gram oil does not. The same cascade gives ₹8.35 a gram for a ₹399 85 g tin and ₹13.05 for a ₹1,499 300 g candle. Design-first still has a place: for one hero or limited candle, design freely, cost it, and see which price tier it lands in — a 200 g Khamrah Qahwa candle needs about ₹1,095.58, so it is a ₹1,199 candle, not a ₹799 one. The mistake is designing first and then forcing the candle into a price it cannot carry. Your target, packaging and labour figures replace ours.
One line: decide the price, then the margin, then the fragrance budget — and only then fall in love with a scent.
Once you know your ceiling, test two or three oils that fit it side by side. For a ₹799 candle, Woody Oud (₹453.12 for 100 g), Sandalwood (₹502.68) and Bergamot Amber (₹560.00) all sit under ₹6.16 a gram. Their 15 g testers are ₹93.22, ₹93.22 and ₹105.02.

Two ways to build a candle

Design-first asks "what does this candle cost?". Price-first asks "what can this candle afford?". Only the second one protects your margin.

Design-first is natural. You smell an oil you love, choose a jar that suits it, set a generous load, and cost the result. The price is whatever the cost plus a markup says. The trouble is that customers do not see your cost. They see a price next to other candles, and a price that falls between familiar points — ₹1,040, say — often has to be rounded down to one that sells, taking your margin with it.

Price-first, or target costing, reverses the order. You decide the price points your range will sit at, decide the share of each price you need to keep, and let the arithmetic set a budget for every component. Then you design inside that budget. The creative work is the same; it just happens within limits you set deliberately rather than limits you discover afterwards.

The two approaches side by side
Design-first against price-first
Design-first Price-first (target costing)
Starting point The scent, jar and look The selling price and target margin
Fragrance choice Chosen, then costed Chosen from oils under a per-gram ceiling
Price Cost × markup, whatever that gives Fixed first, at a point your customers recognise
Risk A candle at a price that does not sell, or sells at a thin margin A candle that feels constrained if the ceiling is too low
Best for One hero, limited or custom candle The core range you sell every month
Check Which price tier does the cost land in? Does any good oil fit the ceiling?
The beautiful candle at the awkward price. A maker designs a 200 g candle around an oil at ₹15 a gram, costs it, applies a markup, and gets a price of about ₹1,100. It is too dear to sit beside the ₹799 range and too plain to justify ₹1,199. It gets discounted to ₹999 and quietly earns less than the cheaper candles. Nothing was wrong with the design. The price was chosen last.

The cascade: ₹799 to an oil ceiling

Here is the calculation for the middle of the range. The candle is 200 g at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, which the wax maker rates up to 13%, poured into a White Matte Glass Jar with an Eco Thin C1 wick. The contribution target is 50% of the price: the share left after every per-candle cost, to pay fixed costs, your time and profit. That target is illustrative; set your own using the profit ladder.

− Wax (184 g of Chunks) ₹110.22 ₹98.60 ₹599.00 a kilo
= Fragrance budget ₹98.60 for 16 g of oil
Oil ceiling per gram ₹6.16 at the pack size you buy

Every line above the ceiling is a decision you can revisit, and every one moves the ceiling. Raise the price to ₹899 and the ceiling rises; choose a rigid box and it falls. The point of the cascade is that you see the trade-off before you buy anything. Note the last note: the ceiling applies to the rate you actually pay. Lavender is ₹5.40 a gram at 100 g and fits; bought in 15 g testers at ₹7.00 it would not.

Load moves the ceiling too
At a 6% load the ₹799 candle holds 12 g of oil and the ceiling rises to ₹8.02 a gram; at 10% it holds 20 g and falls to ₹5.05. A lower load lets you afford a dearer oil, but only if the candle still performs — test it. The fragrance-load post covers that trade-off.

Three price points, three ceilings

Run the cascade once per price point and the whole range designs itself around three numbers.
50% contribution target · 8% load · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · non-material costs, lids and the 300 g jar are EXAMPLES
The cascade for a three-tier range
₹399 · 85 g golden tin ₹799 · 200 g White Matte ₹1,499 · 300 g example jar

Oil at 8% 6.8 g 16 g 24 g
Oil ceiling ₹8.35/g ₹6.16/g ₹13.05/g

The middle tier has the tightest fragrance budget per gram. That surprises most makers, who assume the cheapest candle is the most constrained. The ₹399 tin holds only 6.8 g of oil, so a small budget still buys a good oil per gram; the ₹1,499 candle has a large budget left after its fixed costs. The ₹799 candle, with a full 200 g jar and a proper box, is where fragrance choice needs the most discipline — and it is usually the tier that sells most. The fixed-cost side of that is explained in the cost-per-gram post, and the ₹799 premium post looks at that price point on its own.

The CSI principle
The price decides the budget; the budget decides the oil.
Set the price points first, the margin second, and let every component's budget fall out of the arithmetic. Then choose the best oil, jar and packaging that fit. A range built that way earns at every tier; a range built the other way earns wherever it happens to.

Which oils fit which price

Here are twelve oils from CSI's catalogue at their 100 g per-gram rate, checked against the three ceilings. A tick means the oil fits that tier's budget at 8% with everything else as costed above. It says nothing about performance; there is no published throw data for any oil, so test the ones that fit.

Delina (Parfums De Marly Inspired) ₹11.95 — — ✓
Khamrah Qahwa ₹15.06 — — —
Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) ₹17.85 — — —

The pattern is clear. Value and mid-range oils fit every tier. Richer vanillas and Indian florals such as Raat Ki Rani and Vanilla Bean fit the small tin and the premium candle but not the ₹799 jar at this load. Oils modelled on well-known perfumes fit only the ₹1,499 tier, and the dearest do not fit even that — Khamrah Qahwa at ₹15.06 and Good Girl (Carolina Herrera Inspired) at ₹17.85 a gram. They belong in a hero candle priced for them, or at a lower load, tested.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The oils that fail the ceilings are some of the most expensive in our catalogue, and a supplier would rather you used them everywhere. For a ₹799 core candle, they do not fit, and forcing them in means either a thin margin or a price your customers will not pay. Use them where the price supports them — a ₹1,499 candle, a limited edition — and build the everyday range from oils that fit.

When design-first is right

Design-first is the right approach for one kind of candle: the hero. A signature scent, a limited festive edition, a custom commission. Design it as you want it, cost it honestly, and then work forwards to see which price it needs. Take a 200 g Khamrah Qahwa candle in the same White Matte jar with the same example packaging and labour. Its oil costs ₹240.96 (16 g at ₹15.06), its materials ₹445.88. To keep the same 50% contribution it needs ₹1,095.58.

Design-first: the candle is fixed, the price is found · EXAMPLE non-material costs
A Khamrah Qahwa hero candle at three prices
Price Materials Other costs incl. fee Contribution Share of price
₹799 (forced into the core tier) ₹445.88 ₹95.98 ₹257.14 32.2%
₹1,095.58 (the price its cost needs) ₹445.88 ₹101.91 ₹547.79 50.0%
₹1,199 (the tier it belongs in) ₹445.88 ₹103.98 ₹649.14 54.1%

The design itself is fine. What decides whether it works is the tier. At ₹799 it keeps 32.2%; at ₹1,199 it keeps 54.1% — comfortably above target. So the design-first candle should be launched as a ₹1,199 hero, not squeezed into the core range. The tier comparison post shows how a top tier can still go wrong if it doubles the size at the same time.

Design one candle for love. Design the range for the price.

When nothing fits

Sometimes the ceiling is lower than any oil you like. Before you lower your target, try the other levers, one at a time, and recost after each.

₹799 tier · each lever applied on its own · EXAMPLE figures where marked in the cascade
Five levers and what they do to the ceiling
Lever Change New oil ceiling
None (as costed) — ₹6.16/g
Load 8% → 6% ₹8.02/g
Jar White Matte + lid → Salsa 200 ml with cap, illustrative 160 g fill ₹14.06/g
Price ₹799 → ₹899 ₹9.16/g
Packaging Box ₹45.00 → ₹30.00 (example) ₹7.10/g
Target 50% → 45% contribution ₹8.66/g

The jar swap is often the biggest lever at this price: a jar that brings its own lid and holds a little less wax frees money for fragrance without changing the customer's price. Lowering the target is the last lever, not the first; it is a decision to earn less on every candle, and it should be made deliberately.

The target-costing process

1
Choose your price pointsThree is enough for most ranges — an entry, a core and a premium. Use points your customers already recognise.
2
Set a contribution target for eachThe share of price each candle must keep after all per-candle costs. Base it on your fixed costs and pay, as in the profit ladder.
3
Cost everything except the oilPackaging, labour, per-order packing, fees, wick, jar, lid, wax. Quotes for anything CSI does not sell.
4
Calculate the oil ceilingFragrance budget ÷ grams of oil. At the pack size you will actually buy.
5
Shortlist oils under the ceiling and test themBuy 15 g of three or four, pour side-by-side test candles, and choose on performance. The ceiling narrows the list; your nose decides.

Golden 85 g tins are ₹360.00 for 12. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo, rated up to 13% fragrance load, and White Matte Glass Jars ₹354.00 for 5.
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. If you are planning a festive range, set its price points and ceilings this week, test the oils that fit, and order once. For wax, jars and a mixed fragrance order in one quote with GST invoicing, message CSI with your ceilings and we will suggest oils that fit.

This closes the second half of the cost-per-candle cluster. For the pieces the cascade relies on, see the forgotten-costs post, packaging per order and wastage; for buying once the range is set, when to move from 100 g to 1 kg.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's easiest advice is to design around the best oil you can find and price later. This page tells you to set the price first and let it cap your fragrance spend, which rules some of our dearest oils out of a ₹799 candle, because a range that earns at every price is the customer we want to keep.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tin and Salsa jar prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Every ceiling, contribution and required price is plain arithmetic on those prices and the labelled examples, shown to two decimals.

The 50% contribution target, packaging, labour, per-order packing, gateway rate, White Matte lid and the 300 g jar and lid are examples; replace them with your own. A tick in the fit table means an oil fits the budget, not that it performs; no throw data is published for any oil, so test. For oils that fit your ceilings, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What is target costing for candles?
Working backwards from the selling price: subtract the contribution you want to keep and every cost except fragrance, and what remains is the most you can spend on oil. It turns a pricing question into a clear budget for each component.
How much can I spend on fragrance oil per candle?
It depends on your price, target and other costs. With our example figures and a 50% target, a ₹799 200 g candle can spend ₹98.60 on 16 g of oil — ₹6.16 a gram.
Should I choose the fragrance or the price first?
For your core range, the price. For one hero or limited candle, the fragrance — then cost it and place it at the price tier it needs rather than squeezing it into a cheaper one.
Can I use designer-inspired fragrance oils in a ₹799 candle?
At an 8% load with our example costs, not within a 50% target: the ₹799 ceiling is ₹6.16 a gram and inspired-by oils run from about ₹9 to ₹24 a gram. They fit a ₹1,499 candle, or a lower load if it tests well.
What margin should I target when pricing candles?
Base it on what each candle must contribute to fixed costs, your pay and profit at the volume you can sell. The profit ladder post shows how to work that out; this page uses 50% only as an illustration.
What if no fragrance I like fits my budget?
Try the other levers first: a jar with an included lid, a slightly smaller fill, a 6% load if it performs (the ₹799 ceiling rises to ₹8.02), a cheaper box, or a higher price point. Lower the target only as a deliberate decision.
Price first, then formulate
Set the price, set the margin, find the ceiling — then choose the best oil under it.
