I Want to Launch a ₹999 Luxury Candle — How Do I Work Backwards From the Selling Price to Set Maximum Budgets for Fragrance, Wax, Jar and Packaging?
शेयर करना
What does each line get? On the luxury weighting this page uses: fragrance ₹115.88 (29%), wax ₹103.90 (26%), jar ₹71.93 (18%), wick ₹39.96 (10%) and packaging ₹67.93 (17%). The split is illustrative; the method is not.
Does a real CSI luxury candle fit inside those budgets? Three of the four do. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 155 g is ₹100.75, Santal Noir at 12.4 g is ₹113.09 and a Black Glossy Glass Jar is ₹70.80. The Performance Wooden Wicks at ₹41.30 is ₹1.34 over its line. Four lines total ₹325.94, leaving ₹73.66 of the room for presentation.
Why is the wax share smaller here than on a cheaper candle? Because a luxury price does not buy a proportionally bigger pour. Materials are 32.63% of this ₹999.00 candle. The rupees that a higher price frees go to fragrance concentration, vessel and presentation — and presentation is the one line on this page CSI cannot sell you.
Take the margin out before you spend anything
Most people build a candle and then look for a price. Working backwards reverses that, and it is the only order that protects a launch. You have fixed ₹999.00. Decide what share of that you intend to keep as gross margin before anything else is taken out, subtract it, and what remains is the total you may spend on everything physical in the box. This page works at an illustrative 60% target, which leaves ₹399.60. That figure is not a recommendation and your own target may be higher or lower — the table below gives the room at six of them so you can read off yours.
Two words there do a lot of work. Target means the share of the price you intend to keep after everything physical in the box, which is one step stricter than the textbook gross margin — that one stops at materials and leaves packaging to be found later. Room therefore means materials and packaging together, because a luxury candle is bought partly as an object in a box and pretending the box is free is how launch budgets go wrong. So ₹399.60 has to stretch across five lines, not four, and the fifth is one CSI does not sell.
| Target margin | Margin kept | Room for materials and packaging | Room as a share of price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55% | ₹549.45 | ₹449.55 | 45.00% |
| 60% | ₹599.40 | ₹399.60 | 40.00% |
| 65% | ₹649.35 | ₹349.65 | 35.00% |
| 68% | ₹679.32 | ₹319.68 | 32.00% |
| 70% | ₹699.30 | ₹299.70 | 30.00% |
| 75% | ₹749.25 | ₹249.75 | 25.00% |
Read the last column before you go further. At 60% the room is 40.00% of the price; at 75% it is 25.00%. That share is the single most important number in luxury pricing, and it is the reason the section at the end of this page exists: a higher price almost never buys a proportionally better candle, because the target margin usually rises with the price.
The luxury weighting, and why it is not the mid-market one
A mid-price candle is mostly wax by cost. A luxury candle is mostly everything else. The weighting below is the one this page uses, expressed as shares of the ₹399.60 room, and it is illustrative — a starting shape to argue with, not a rule. What is not illustrative is the direction of the differences: at this tier the fragrance share goes up because concentration and oil quality are what a customer notices first, the vessel share goes up because the jar is the object they keep, the wick share goes up because a crackling wooden wick costs several times a cotton one, and the wax share comes down to pay for all three.
| Line | Mid-price share | This page’s luxury share | Budget on your ₹999.00 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance | 25% | 29% | ₹115.88 |
| Wax | 30% | 26% | ₹103.90 |
| Jar | 15% | 18% | ₹71.93 |
| Wick | 5% | 10% | ₹39.96 |
| Packaging — your own cost | 25% | 17% | ₹67.93 |
| Total room | 100% | 100% | ₹399.60 |
| Of which CSI can price | — | 83% | ₹331.67 |
The packaging share falls from 25% to 17% and still rises in rupees, from ₹59.90 on a ₹599.00 candle to ₹67.93 here. That is the shape of the whole tier in one row: shares move one way, rupees move the other, and only the rupees pay invoices. Whenever you compare two tiers, compare the rupees.
What each line budget buys at CSI rates
Wax, ₹103.90. Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is ₹650.00 a kilogram in the 500 g and 1 kg packs and ₹637.00 a kilogram in the 5 kg and 10 kg packs, a difference of ₹13.00 a kilogram. It is one of only two CSI waxes whose rate per kilogram actually changes with pack size; most are the same rate at every size, so do not plan a launch around a quantity ladder that is not there. At the 1 kg rate your wax line buys 159.84 g; at the 5 kg rate it buys 163.10 g. The product page gives a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, and states a maximum fragrance load of 13% of total wax weight.
Fragrance, ₹115.88. The useful form of this budget is not grams but a maximum rate. If you pour 155 g of wax at 8% of wax weight you need 12.4 g of oil, so the fragrance line will carry any oil priced up to ₹9.35 a gram, which is ₹9,345.48 a kilogram. That single number turns the whole fragrance oils collection into a yes or a no. Santal Noir at ₹9,120.00 a kilogram is a yes with ₹225.48 a kilogram to spare. Several of the fine-fragrance-grade oils on the store sit well above that ceiling, and at this pour they simply do not fit a ₹999.00 candle at a 60% target.
Jar, ₹71.93. Vessels are priced per piece, not per kilogram, so the budget converts directly. A Black Glossy Glass Jar is ₹70.80 a piece in the pack of 5 and the same ₹70.80 a piece in the pack of 10 — flat, so buy the pack that matches your batch rather than the one that looks like a bargain. Choose the vessel before you choose the pour weight, not after: most CSI vessel pages do not publish a fill capacity, so the only reliable way to know what a jar takes is to fill one with water to your intended wax line and weigh it.
Wick, ₹39.96. This is the line that does not work, and it is worth seeing why. Performance Wooden Wicks come in three packs and, unusually for this catalogue, the rate per piece really does fall with pack size: ₹59.00 each in the pack of 10, ₹47.20 each in the fifty, ₹41.30 each in the hundred. Even at the best of those, ₹41.30, the wick is ₹1.34 over its ₹39.96 line. A Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 would fit with room to spare — it is ₹31.86 cheaper a candle — but it does not crackle, and at this tier the crackle is part of what is being sold.
| Line | Budget | What it buys at CSI rates | Chosen item | Clears the line? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance | ₹115.88 | any oil up to ₹9,345.48/kg at 12.4 g | Santal Noir — ₹9.12/g | Yes, by ₹2.80 |
| Wax | ₹103.90 | 159.84 g at ₹650.00/kg; 163.10 g at ₹637.00/kg | Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — 155 g | Yes, by ₹3.15 |
| Jar | ₹71.93 | one vessel at up to this price | Black Glossy Glass Jar — ₹70.80 | Yes, by ₹1.13 |

The candle assembled, line by line against its budget
The wax line said 159.84 g was affordable. Pour 155 g instead. Rounding a pour weight down off its ceiling is free money — it saves ₹3.15 a candle here — and it also gives you somewhere to take the wick overrun from. At 8% of wax weight, which is the convention this whole page uses and the way CSI product pages state loads, 155 g of wax carries 12.4 g of oil and 167.4 g goes into the vessel. State that reading on your own sheet before you multiply anything: 155 g is the wax, not the finished candle.
Santal Noir publishes no candle usage range on its product page, so the wax grade's stated maximum is the only published limit that applies here — 13% of total wax weight for Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468. The 8% this page pours sits well inside it. Where an oil page does publish a range, the lower of the two figures governs and you should say so on your own sheet. For flash point, vanillin content or an IFRA statement on an oil whose page does not print one, ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming.
| Line | Quantity | Rate | Cost | Budget | Variance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance — Santal Noir | 12.4 g | ₹9.12/g | ₹113.09 | ₹115.88 | ₹2.80 under |
| Wax — Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 155 g | ₹650.00/kg | ₹100.75 | ₹103.90 | ₹3.15 under |
| Jar — Black Glossy Glass Jar | 1 piece | ₹70.80 each | ₹70.80 | ₹71.93 | ₹1.13 under |
| Wick — Performance Wooden Wicks | 1 piece | ₹41.30 at the 100 pack | ₹41.30 | ₹39.96 | ₹1.34 over |
| Materials from CSI | 167.4 g of fill plus vessel and wick | — | ₹325.94 | ₹331.67 | ₹5.73 under |
| Packaging — your own cost | box, insert, label, ribbon | your figure | your figure | ₹67.93 | ₹73.66 available |
| Total room used | — | — | ₹325.94 + your packaging | ₹399.60 | — |
Four lines, ₹325.94, which is 32.63% of your ₹999.00. Against the room that leaves ₹73.66 for presentation — ₹5.73 more than the packaging line asked for, because the wax, oil and jar all came in under budget and more than paid for the wick. Across a hundred candles the four CSI lines are ₹32,593.80 and the presentation allowance is ₹7,366.20. Those two numbers are what you take to a box supplier.
One honest footnote on the wax. Buying the 5 kg pack instead of the 1 kg takes the wax line from ₹100.75 to ₹98.74, a difference of ₹2.02 a candle or ₹201.50 across a hundred. That is the entire scale effect available on this grade, and it is worth having; it is not worth restructuring a launch around. On Santal Noir there is less than that in it — the 500g pack works out at ₹9.20 a gram against ₹9.19 at 100g and ₹9.12 at 1kg, a spread of ₹8.00 a kilogram, which on 12.4 g of oil is ₹0.10 a candle. Buy the pack that matches your batch and your storage, not the one you assume is cheaper.
The wick that will not fit, and four honest ways to deal with it
The ₹39.96 wick line is ₹1.34 short of the cheapest wooden wick on the store. Four responses are defensible and one is not. The one that is not is pretending the line fits by rounding it, which is how a launch discovers in month three that its gross margin is two points under plan.
The fourth option is the one worth sitting with, because it is where a luxury candle is actually decided. ₹31.86 a candle is ₹3,186.00 across a hundred and ₹31,860.00 across a thousand. If the wooden wick is genuinely part of why someone pays ₹999.00 rather than ₹599.00, it is cheap. If it is there because it looked right in a mood board, it is the most expensive gram in the candle. Only your own burn tests and your own customers can tell you which, and neither CSI nor this page can decide it for you.
Working backwards on your own price, step by step
Where the extra ₹400.00 over a ₹599.00 candle actually goes
Compare two candles from the same workshop. One sells at ₹599.00 and targets 60%, leaving ₹239.60 of room. One sells at ₹999.00 and, as luxury programmes usually do, targets a point higher — say 70% — leaving ₹299.70. The price has gone up by ₹400.00, which is 66.78% more. The room has gone up by ₹60.10, which is 25.08% more. Almost ₹339.90 of that extra ₹400.00 never reaches the candle at all.
| ₹599.00 candle at 60% | ₹999.00 candle at 70% | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selling price | ₹599.00 | ₹999.00 | +₹400.00 (+66.78%) |
| Target margin | 60% | 70% | +10 points |
| Room for materials and packaging | ₹239.60 | ₹299.70 | +₹60.10 (+25.08%) |
| Room as a share of price | 40.00% | 30.00% | −10 points |
| Margin kept | ₹359.40 | ₹699.30 | +₹339.90 |
This is the observation the luxury tier rests on, and it cuts against the instinct most makers bring to it. Materials are usually a smaller share of a luxury price, not a larger one. The candle inside a ₹999.00 box is better than the one inside a ₹599.00 box, but it is better by ₹60.10, not by ₹400.00. Where the rest goes is worth being clear-eyed about: into gross margin, which then has to fund the photography, the box design, the tissue, the hand-written card, the returns, the influencer seeding and the longer time a ₹999.00 candle sits in stock before it sells.
That is also why the packaging line on this page is deliberately generous at ₹67.93 and why the build left ₹73.66 for it. At this tier the presentation is not an overhead attached to the product — it is part of the product. CSI cannot price any of it, will not guess at it, and would rather tell you plainly that the most expensive component of your ₹999.00 candle is very likely something bought from someone else.
One last number to keep, and it uses the textbook definition rather than this page's stricter one. Measured against materials alone, with the packaging line left out of it, the build here leaves ₹673.06 on a ₹999.00 sale, which is 67.37% as a gross margin. That is the figure a contribution sheet starts from, and every one of your own costs — the box included — still sits between it and your bank account.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells wax, fragrance oil, vessels and wicks, and this page still says that the most expensive part of a ₹999.00 candle is probably not bought from CSI. On this build the four CSI lines are ₹325.94 — 32.63% of your price — and the box, insert, label, ribbon and the photograph that sells the thing are all yours to source and pay for. It also says that the Performance Wooden Wicks at ₹41.30 is the one line that will not fit the budget this page set, and that a Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 would fit comfortably. If the crackle is not central to your product, take the ₹31.86.
Every CSI price here is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Your ₹999.00 selling price is yours and is used exactly as given. The 60% target margin, the five-way split of the room and the ₹599.00 comparison candle are illustrative examples, stated as such, and are not recommendations or measured data. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it: 155 g of wax at 8% carries 12.4 g of oil and 167.4 g goes into the vessel. Santal Noir publishes no candle usage range, so the 13% of total wax weight stated for Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 is the only published limit that applies to this pairing. No fill capacity is published for the Black Glossy Glass Jar, so this page states none and never claims the candle fits it. Packaging, boxes, inserts, ribbon, labels, courier to your own customer, payment fees, advertising, labour and electricity are not CSI products and carry no figure anywhere on this page. The page assumes no wax wastage, which is an assumption rather than a measurement.

Figures verified September 2026 (CSI live pricing). The reader's figure, used exactly as given and never presented as a CSI price: a ₹999.00 selling price. Illustrative and labelled as such throughout: the 60% target margin; the 29/26/18/10/17 split of the room; the ₹599.00 comparison candle at a 60% target and the ₹999.00 candle at a 70% target used in the two-tier table. Series convention: fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, so this page pours 155 g of wax with 12.4 g of oil at 8% and 167.4 g of fill goes into the vessel; that is the reading carried throughout. Live CSI prices, September 2026, taxes included. Wax: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 500 g ₹325.00 (₹650.00/kg), 1 kg ₹650.00 (₹650.00/kg), 5 kg ₹3,185.00 (₹637.00/kg), 10 kg ₹6,370.00 (₹637.00/kg); the product page states a maximum fragrance load of 13% of total wax weight, a melting point of 50–53°C, a pour temperature of 58–60°C and a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage. Fragrance: Santal Noir 15g ₹166.00, 50g ₹499.00, 100g ₹919.00 (₹9.19/g), 500g ₹4,599.00 (₹9.20/g), 1kg ₹9,120.00 (₹9.12/g); the page publishes no candle usage range, flash point, vanillin figure or IFRA statement, so none is quoted here and the wax grade's stated maximum is the only published limit. Vessel: Black Glossy Glass Jar Pack of 5 ₹354.00 and Pack of 10 ₹708.00, both ₹70.80 a piece; no fill capacity is published for it, so none is stated and no claim is made that this candle fits it. Wick: Performance Wooden Wicks pack of 10 ₹590.00 (₹59.00 each), pack of 50 ₹2,360.00 (₹47.20 each), pack of 100 ₹4,130.00 (₹41.30 each); Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) ₹9.44 each and Thin (C1) ₹5.90 each.
