I Want to Lower My Cost Per Candle as Production Grows From 100 to 5,000 Units a Month — Which Economies of Scale Should I Realistically Expect From Raw Materials?
शेयर करना
Does the wax get cheaper per kilogram as I buy more? No, not above the first step. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹520.00/kg in the 500 g pack and ₹507.40/kg in the 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg packs. A maker pouring 5,000 candles a month buys a hundred 10 kg packs at exactly the rate a maker buying one pays. CSI publishes no quantity ladder beyond what each product page prints.
What about the fragrance oil at 80 kg a month? Spicy Raspberry is ₹5.98/g in the 50g pack and ₹6.00/g in the 1kg. The largest pack is fractionally dearer per gram — ₹0.30 more on a 16 g dose, or ₹1,520.00 across 5,000 candles. Buy the big pack for the freight and the handling, not for the rate.
So where does scale actually help? Three places, in this order: test-batch amortisation falls from ₹7.96 to ₹0.16 a candle, inbound freight falls from ₹62.32 to ₹61.65, and wastage falls only if your process improves — each percentage point of wax and oil saved is worth ₹1.97 a candle.
The candle this page costs, stated once
Everything below prices one specific candle, unchanged at all three volumes, so that any difference you see comes from scale and not from a quiet substitution. It is 200 g of wax at an 8% fragrance load. A load is a percentage of wax weight, which is how CSI product pages state it, so that is 16 g of oil and 216 g of fill in the vessel. That is the reading this page carries throughout.
The materials are Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 bought in 10 kg packs, Spicy Raspberry bought in 1kg packs, a 200ml Salsa Amber Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap priced per piece from the 100-piece pack, and an Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1). The vessel page publishes a 200 ml capacity and no fill weight in grams, so this page prices the vessel per piece and makes no claim about what weight of wax it takes — match your own pour to your own vessel before you use any of these figures.
One published limit applies to the load. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a maximum fragrance load of 10% of total wax weight. The Spicy Raspberry page publishes no candle usage range, so the wax grade's stated maximum is the only published limit here, and the 8% this page uses sits inside it. If you want the oil's own range, ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming one.
| Line | Quantity | Pack used | Rate | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 200 g | 10 kg · ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40/kg | ₹101.48 |
| Spicy Raspberry | 16 g | 1kg · ₹5,999.00 | ₹6.00/g | ₹95.98 |
| 200ml Salsa Amber Glass Jar | 1 piece | Pack of 100 · ₹6,200.00 | ₹62.00 each | ₹62.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1 wick | 1000 · ₹5,900.00 | ₹5.90 each | ₹5.90 |
| Materials, one candle | 216 g of fill | — | — | ₹265.36 |
The three material rates that do not move at all
A growth plan usually carries an assumption that raw materials get cheaper as orders get bigger. On the CSI catalogue that assumption is mostly wrong, and it is wrong in a way you can check in thirty seconds on each product page. CSI publishes no catalogue-wide quantity ladder. Some products fall at one step and then flatten; several are identical at every pack size; a few are fractionally dearer in the largest pack. The only safe approach is to read the ladder for the product you actually buy.
| Line | Smallest pack rate | Largest pack rate | Change | Effect per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹520.00/kg at 500 g | ₹507.40/kg at 10 kg | falls ₹12.60/kg once, at the 1 kg step | saves ₹2.52 on 200 g |
| Spicy Raspberry | ₹6.60/g at 15g | ₹6.00/g at 1kg | falls to ₹5.98/g at 50g, then edges back up | costs ₹0.30 more on 16 g than the 50g rate |
| 200ml Salsa Amber Glass Jar | ₹62.00 each at 5 | ₹62.00 each at 100 | no change at any pack size | no change |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | ₹5.90 each at 20 | ₹5.90 each at 1000 | no change at any pack size | no change |
The fragrance row deserves a second look because it runs the wrong way. Spicy Raspberry is ₹5.98/g in the 50g pack and ₹6.00/g in the 1kg. On a 16 g dose that is ₹0.30 more per candle in the big pack, and at 5,000 candles a month it is ₹1,520.00 a month. That is not a reason to buy eighty 50g packs — the handling and the freight would eat it several times over — but it is a reason to stop treating the biggest bottle as automatically the best buy, and to read the ladder on every oil you scale up.
Inbound freight: real, small, and it stops early
Freight is the one place where buying more genuinely costs less per candle, because CSI publishes flat rates by weight band and a band covers a range. The catch is that the bands stop. The heaviest published band covers up to 50 kg; above that there is no published rate, so a heavier consignment is a question for WhatsApp, not a figure this page can print. That ceiling is reached earlier than most makers expect.
Work it through on the wax. A 10 kg pack of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 stores a packed weight of 11.0 kg — the parcel bills on the packed weight, not on the label. One pack is ₹1,200.00 on Standard Shipping at September 2026 rates, which over the 50 candles it pours is ₹24.00 a candle. Two packs together, 22.0 kg, fall in a band priced at ₹2,000.00 on Expedited Shipping — ₹20.00 a candle over 100 candles. Four packs, 44.0 kg, come to ₹4,000.00 on Expedited Shipping, which over 200 candles is ₹20.00 a candle again. Five packs weigh 55.0 kg and no published band covers them, so they are two consignments. The whole economy of scale in wax freight is ₹4.00 a candle and it is complete at 100 candles a month.
| Line | At 100 a month | At 500 a month | At 5,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wax — 11.0 kg a pack | ₹20.00 | ₹20.00 | ₹20.00 |
| Fragrance — 1.1 kg a pack | ₹2.16 | ₹1.60 | ₹1.60 |
| Vessels — 50.0 kg a pack of 100 | ₹40.00 | ₹40.00 | ₹40.00 |
| Wicks | ₹0.16 | ₹0.16 | ₹0.05 |
| Freight, one candle | ₹62.32 | ₹61.76 | ₹61.65 |
Two things in that table are worth arguing with, honestly. The first is the vessel row. Glass is the heaviest thing you buy and it is already at the top of the published ladder in a single pack of one hundred, so vessel freight per candle is the same at 5,000 a month as at 100. If you want that number to fall, the lever is a lighter vessel or a local one, not a bigger order. The second is that the bands do not rise smoothly with weight — a consignment that is a shade over a band edge can cost more than a heavier one in the next band down. Check the weight you are actually shipping each time rather than generalising from a month that worked.
Test batches and wastage: the two that really do fall
Every production month burns some candles that never get sold. You pour a test candle when a new batch of wax arrives, when a fragrance lot changes, when a vessel changes. That cost is fixed per month and divided by the units you sell, so it falls exactly in proportion to volume — it is the purest economy of scale on the page, and the largest single component of the ₹8.47.
Assume three test candles a month — an assumption, not a measurement, and one you should replace with your own count. At ₹265.36 of materials each that is ₹796.08 a month. Divided over 100 candles it is ₹7.96 each. Over 500 it is ₹1.59. Over 5,000 it is ₹0.16. That single line accounts for ₹7.80 of the ₹8.47 this page finds between the smallest and largest volume, which is worth sitting with: the headline economy of scale in a candle business is not a cheaper kilogram of wax, it is the same three test candles spread over fifty times as many sales.
Wastage is different and it is where most of the honest upside lives. Wax left in the pitcher, an overpour, a jar that cracks, a batch that sets badly — this page assumes 3% of the wax and oil, which on ₹197.46 of scented wax is ₹5.92 a candle. That 3% is an assumption and not measured data. Critically, it does not fall because you got bigger. It falls because you weighed instead of estimating, because you bought a pouring jug that empties cleanly, because you stopped pouring at the end of a long day. Each percentage point you take off is worth ₹1.97 a candle — more than twice what the entire freight economy of scale delivers.
| Line | 100 a month | 500 a month | 5,000 a month | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax, fragrance, vessel, wick | ₹265.36 | ₹265.36 | ₹265.36 | Does not move |
| Inbound freight | ₹62.32 | ₹61.76 | ₹61.65 | Falls ₹0.67, then stops |
| Wastage at an assumed 3% | ₹5.92 | ₹5.92 | ₹5.92 | Falls only if you improve it |
| Test batch, 3 candles a month | ₹7.96 | ₹1.59 | ₹0.16 | Falls ₹7.80 |
| Total per candle | ₹341.57 | ₹334.64 | ₹333.10 | Falls ₹8.47, or 2.48% |
Run the ledger on your own recipe
Three things that bite at 5,000 a month in India
Heat changes what a bigger inventory means. Holding a month of wax at 5,000 candles is a tonne of soy in whatever room you have. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage and says to keep it away from sunlight and moisture, and in a Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur summer the "cool" part is not free. Storage that keeps stock in condition is a real cost of scale that pushes the other way, and it is yours to price, not CSI's.
Monsoon and the vessel line. Glass is fine; cartons and cotton are not. Bulk vessel stock held through a Mumbai or Kochi monsoon needs to stay off the floor and sealed, and wicks need to stay dry. General candle-making practice is to keep wicks in a closed container rather than an open shelf, which matters more the bigger the box you buy.
The festive spike is not a scale economy. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, and for a 14–21 day cure plus delivery a festive batch needs pouring by about mid-October. A maker who goes from 500 to 5,000 units for one season gets the amortisation benefit for that season only, and takes on the inventory risk of whatever does not sell. The per-candle figures on this page assume steady monthly production. If your 5,000 is a six-week spike rather than a run rate, model it as a spike.
One closing note against CSI's own interest, because it is the honest conclusion of the arithmetic. Nothing on this page gives you a reason to place a larger order than your production needs. The wax rate is the same at 1 kg as at 10 kg, the vessel and wick rates are the same at every pack, the fragrance is fractionally dearer in the largest bottle, and inbound freight per candle stops improving at around a hundred candles a month. Buy the pack that matches your pouring and your storage, take the freight consolidation where a single consignment fits inside a published band, and put the effort you were going to spend negotiating rates into wastage and test discipline instead — that is where the rupees actually are.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells wax, fragrance oil, vessels and wicks, and the arithmetic on this page says plainly that buying more of them does not make them cheaper. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg in the 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg packs alike. 200ml Salsa Amber Glass Jars are ₹62.00 a piece in the Pack of 5, the Pack of 50 and the Pack of 100. Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) are ₹5.90 each at every pack size. Spicy Raspberry is ₹5.98/g in the 50g pack and ₹6.00/g in the 1kg, so the largest pack is fractionally dearer per gram. The total materials saving available to a maker going from 100 to 5,000 candles a month, on these four lines, is ₹2.52 a candle, and most makers have already taken it.
Every CSI price on this page is live stock in September 2026, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance load is a percentage of wax weight, as CSI product pages state it: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a maximum of 10% of total wax weight, and because the Spicy Raspberry page publishes no candle usage range, the wax grade's stated maximum is the only published limit on this pairing. The 200ml Salsa Amber Glass Jar page states a 200 ml capacity and publishes no fill weight, so this page prices it per piece and makes no claim about what weight of candle it holds. Shipping figures are published flat rates by weight band as at September 2026, computed on stored packed weights; the published bands stop at 50 kg, and where a month exceeds that this page prices it as several consignments, which is an assumption about ordering and not a published bulk rate. Wastage of 3% and three test candles a month are stated assumptions, not measured data. Labels, boxes, mailers, courier to your own customer, payment-gateway and marketplace fees, advertising, labour, electricity and rent are not CSI products, are not in any figure here, and are not estimated.
