50 Vanilla Candles · Exact Quantities
At 8% of a 200 g finished candle, fifty candles hold exactly 800 g of vanilla and 9,200 g of wax. The order adds four test candles, 3% rejects and 4% pour loss — and leaves the production vanilla until the test has chosen between CSI's two.
800 g
of vanilla fragrance oil in fifty 200 g candles at 8% · 926.4 g with allowances · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much vanilla oil, exactly? 800 g in the finished candles (16 g each). With 4 test candles, 3% rejects and 4% pour loss, 926.4 g.

How much wax? 9,200 g exactly; 10,653.0 g with allowances — 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg of CSI 464, ₹5,581.40.

Which vanilla? Vanilla Bean and Dark Vanilla are priced identically. Test both (₹780.00), then buy 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g of the winner (₹6,620.00).

Is 8% safe in CSI 464? Yes — CSI's page states up to 10%, so 8% leaves two points of headroom. Do not exceed 10% in this wax.
The short answer
Answer: Exactly 800 g of vanilla and 9,200 g of wax for 50 × 200 g at 8%. Buy 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg of CSI 464 now and about 858 g of the chosen vanilla after a four-candle test.
Why: CSI's load is a share of the finished candle: 200 × 0.08 = 16 g oil, 184 g wax. Reading 8% as a share of wax gives 14.81 g oil — a true 7.41%.
Method: Exact BOM → 4 test candles → ÷ (1 − 3%) → × 1.04 pour loss on wax and oil → ÷ 0.98 on jars → cheapest in-stock packs → oil after the test.
What "8% fragrance load" means in a 200 g candle CSI convention: 8% of the FINISHED weight · the other common reading: 8% of the wax weight CSI: oil = W × L 200 × 0.08 wax 184.00 g oil 16.00 g → 8.00% of 200.00 g 8% of wax, 200 g total wax = 200 ÷ 1.08 wax 185.19 g oil 14.81 g → 7.41% of 200.00 g 8% on top of 184 g 184 × 0.08 added wax 184.00 g oil 14.72 g → 7.41% of 198.72 g Oil segment drawn at 4× scale so the difference is visible. Load vs published ceilings 0% 6% 8% 10% 13% this order: 8% CSI 464 ceiling 10% Chunks / CSI 468 ceiling 13% 50 candles: 800 g of vanilla and 9,200 g of wax exactly — before tests, rejects and pour loss. Two points of headroom in CSI 464. The formula is weighed per candle, never "a bit extra" on top.
Three readings of "8%" in a 200 g candle, and where 8% sits against the published ceilings. CSI's convention (top bar) gives 16 g of oil; reading 8% as a share of wax gives 14.81 g. CSI 464's page states up to 10%; Chunks and CSI 468 state 13%. Oil segments are drawn at four times scale.
Straight answer
I want to make 50 × 200 g vanilla soy candles at 8% fragrance load — what exact quantity of wax and vanilla fragrance oil should I buy?
Fifty 200 g candles at 8% contain exactly 800 g of vanilla and 9,200 g of wax — 16 g and 184 g per candle. That is the formula quantity. To buy, add four test candles, a 3% reject allowance and 4% pour loss (labelled assumptions): 926.4 g of oil and 10,653.0 g of wax. In Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, whose page states up to 10% fragrance, the wax is 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg (₹5,581.40). CSI lists two vanillas at identical prices — Vanilla Bean and Dark Vanilla — so test both with 3 × 15 g each, then buy the winner's production quantity: 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, ₹6,620.00. With Eco Thin C1 wicks, stickers and White Matte jars the CSI order is ₹17,783.40. Keep the 8% as a share of the finished candle; reading it as a share of wax gives only 14.81 g of oil per candle.
One line: 800 g of vanilla and 9,200 g of wax exactly; buy the wax now and the vanilla after a four-candle test.
50 × 200 g at 8% is exactly 800 g of vanilla fragrance oil and 9,200 g of wax. With four test candles, 3% rejects and 4% pour loss, order 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹5,581.40) now, two small test lots of Vanilla Bean and Dark Vanilla (₹780.00), and the winning vanilla — 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g, ₹6,620.00 — after the test. Whole CSI order: ₹17,783.40.

The exact quantities, before and after allowances

The exact answer is 800 g of vanilla and 9.2 kg of wax. The order is bigger — and every extra gram has a name.

"Exact" means two different things in a candle order, and this page gives both. The exact formula quantity is what fifty finished candles contain: at 8% of a 200 g finished weight, each candle is 16 g of vanilla and 184 g of wax, so fifty candles contain 800 g of oil and 9,200 g of wax. Nobody can make fifty candles from exactly that, because wax stays in the jug, a candle or two will need remaking, and a new oil needs test candles. The exact purchase quantity is the formula quantity plus named allowances — and it is the number you actually type into a cart.

50 × 200 g · 8% of finished weight · 4 test candles · 3% rejects · 4% pour loss · 2% breakage · allowances labelled working assumptions
Exact quantities for 50 vanilla candles
Line Per candle Exact for 50 + 4 test candles ÷ (1 − 3%) rejects × 1.04 pour loss To buy
Wax (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464) 184 g 9,200 g 9,936 g 10,243.3 g 10,653.0 g 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg
Vanilla fragrance oil 16 g 800 g 864 g 890.7 g 926.4 g Test lots + winner (below)
Wicks (Eco Thin C1) 1 50 54 55.67 → 56 — 3 × pack of 20
Wick stickers 1 50 54 56 — 2 × sheet of 40
Jars (White Matte) 1 50 54 — ÷ 0.98 = 55.10 → 56 6 × pack of 10

The wax line shows why the allowances matter even on a small run. The exact 9.2 kg would fit inside a 10 kg bag with 800 g to spare; the purchase quantity of 10,653.0 g does not, and lands just over the 10.5 kg that a 10 kg plus a 500 g bag would give. So the cheapest cover is 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg of CSI 464 at ₹5,581.40, with 347 g left — about two candles' worth for your next run. If your own pour loss is 3% rather than 4%, the need is 10,550.6 g: still over 10.5 kg, so the order does not change. That is worth checking every time: a percentage that moves the need across a pack boundary is the one worth arguing about.

Weigh, do not pour by eye
The 4% pour-loss figure assumes you weigh oil into wax on a scale for every batch. Pouring "about 16 g" from the bottle is the fastest way to finish the run short of vanilla. A Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00 — less than half a 50 g bottle of either vanilla.

Which 8%? The two ways to read a fragrance load

"8% fragrance load" is written two ways in candle-making, and they give different oil weights. CSI's convention, used on every page in this series, is 8% of the finished candle: oil = 200 × 0.08 = 16 g, wax = 184 g. The other common reading is 8% of the wax. If you keep the finished candle at 200 g and read the load that way, the wax is 200 ÷ 1.08 = 185.19 g and the oil is 14.81 g — a true load of 7.41% of the candle. And if you weigh 184 g of wax and add 8% of it on top, you get 14.72 g of oil in a 198.72 g candle: a true 7.41%.

Per 200 g candle and per 50 candles · CSI's convention is the first row
Three readings of "8%"
How the 8% is applied Wax per candle Oil per candle Candle weight True load Oil for 50
8% of finished weight (CSI) 184.00 g 16.00 g 200.00 g 8.00% 800 g
8% of wax, finished weight held at 200 g 185.19 g 14.81 g 200.00 g 7.41% 740.7 g
8% of 184 g wax, added on top 184.00 g 14.72 g 198.72 g 7.41% 736.0 g
True 8% on a fixed 184 g of wax 184.00 g 16.00 g 200.00 g 8.00% 800.0 g

None of these is wrong as long as you know which one you are using and keep it consistent between testing and production. What goes wrong is mixing them: testing at 8% of finished weight and producing at 8% of wax gives you production candles with 1.19 g less vanilla each than the ones you approved — 59.3 g across the run. The last row shows the one formula that matters when you start from a fixed wax weight rather than a fixed candle: oil = wax × L ÷ (1 − L). The wax-weight-per-candle post uses that formula across 6%, 8%, 10% and 13%.

The mix-up: a load quoted "of total wax weight" read as a share of the candle, or the other way round. Product pages and recipes do not always say which. Fix: write the convention on your BOM in words — "8% of finished weight: 16 g oil + 184 g wax" — and weigh to grams, not percentages. Whichever reading a wax maker's ceiling uses, a candle at 8% of finished weight stays below CSI 464's published 10% either way.

CSI 464 at 8%: two points of headroom, and why that matters

CSI's product page for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states a fragrance load of up to 10%. That is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum — not a regulatory limit and not an optimum. At 8% you have two percentage points of headroom: room for a test at 9% or 10% if your vanilla turns out quieter than you want, and no room at all above 10%. The other CSI container waxes with a published ceiling — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — state 13%; Natural Soy Pearl publishes none.

In money, headroom is not free. Each extra point of load on a 200 g candle is 2 g more oil and 2 g less wax. At Vanilla Bean's 1 kg rate of ₹7.65 a gram that is about ₹15.29 more per candle, or ₹764.60 across fifty candles — far more than the ₹1.01 of wax it replaces. So the order on this page is sized at the title's 8%; if your test pushes you to 10%, rerun the oil line (1,000 g exact for fifty) rather than adding a guess on top.

10% 20 g 180 g 1,000 g ₹152.92 Yes
12% 24 g 176 g 1,200 g ₹183.50 No — above the published ceiling

The 12% row is there to show what not to do in this wax. If you want to test loads above 10%, test them in a wax whose page states a higher ceiling — and remember that the load which smells strongest in a test is not automatically the one to produce. 10% against 8% prices the difference for a 100-candle run, and the oud post shows how a 10% target can creep over the ceiling by accident.

Vanilla Bean or Dark Vanilla: why the oil waits for the test

Two CSI vanillas, the same price at every size — so price cannot choose for you.

CSI lists two straightforward vanillas: Vanilla Bean and Dark Vanilla. On the 24 September pull they are priced identically at every size: ₹130.00 for 15 g, ₹410.00 for 50 g, ₹790.00 for 100 g, ₹3,840.00 for 500 g and ₹7,646.00 for 1 kg. CSI publishes no throw data, composition or IFRA percentage for either here — check each product page, or ask for the IFRA certificate and MSDS on WhatsApp. Colour change over time is a general concern makers raise with some vanilla-type fragrances; CSI publishes no discolouration data for either oil, which is one more reason the test below keeps a candle on the shelf.

That makes the oil, not the wick, the deciding material on this order. The rule this series uses is simple: shared materials can be bought early, the material a test might change is bought after the test. Wax, jars, wicks and stickers are the same whichever vanilla wins. The vanilla is not — and at ₹6,620.00 it is the most expensive single line in the order. So the test buys two small lots of 33.28 g each (two candles per vanilla with 4% pour loss), which the cheapest listed sizes cover as 3 × 15 g per oil, and the production oil follows once you have chosen.

1
Pour two candles of each vanilla in CSI 464Same jar, same Eco Thin C1 wick, same 8% of finished weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax), same pour day. Label the bases. CSI's page for CSI 464 gives an 80–90°C melt/pour working range — follow the page.
2
Cure both to the same checkpointSeven and fourteen days are labelled example checkpoints. Score cold throw at each, blind if someone else can label the jars.
3
Burn one of each side by sideA 3–4 hour cycle with full cool-down is a commonly used working practice. Record time to a full melt pool, flame height, soot and a blind 0–5 throw score from a fixed spot.
4
Leave the second candle of each on the shelfIn your warmest storage spot, out of direct light, for colour and sweating. Photograph both weekly against a white card.
5
Choose, then buy the production oilThe winner needs 857.7 g for fifty candles with rejects and pour loss; its test leftover of 11.72 g counts towards it, leaving 846.0 g to buy: 1 × 500 g + 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g at ₹6,620.00.
The shortcut: buy a kilo of whichever vanilla sounds right. One kilo of either costs ₹7,646.00 and covers the run with 142.3 g to spare — a spare that sits on the shelf if the other vanilla wins. Fix: spend ₹780.00 on the two test lots first. If you already know which vanilla you want, skip the test lots and buy 1 × 500 g + 4 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g of it now (₹7,260.00) — that covers all 54 candle-equivalents.

Rounding every line to real CSI packs

With the oil choice separated out, rounding is mechanical: the cheapest in-stock combination for each line, then the leftover and what it is worth at the price paid. Two pack details decide this order. CSI 464 is priced flat at ₹507.40 a kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg, with the 500 g bag dearer at ₹520.00 a kilo, so a 10 kg plus a 1 kg bag is cheaper than a 10 kg plus two 500 g bags. And the vanillas get only slightly cheaper per gram with size — ₹7.90 at 100 g, ₹7.68 at 500 g, ₹7.65 at 1 kg — while 15 g is ₹8.67, so the production oil is built from a 500 g bottle plus 100 g bottles and small top-ups rather than a 1 kg bottle.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Do not buy a 1 kg bottle of vanilla "to be safe" on a 50-candle run: it costs ₹1,026.00 more than the production oil this page specifies and leaves 154.0 g unopened. And if the White Matte jar is not the jar you want, drop it — at ₹4,248.00 it is the second-biggest line here and the one most makers already have from another supplier.

That is ₹355.67 of CSI materials per saleable candle, or ₹297.17 for one candle's own BOM before allowances (wax, oil, wick, sticker and jar at the rates paid). The difference between the two is the cost of tests, rejects, pour loss, breakage and pack rounding spread over fifty candles. The Eco Thin C1 wick is used here because it is the series' default single wick; CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart, so the four test candles double as your wick check. If the wick fails, the wick-sample post shows how many alternatives to add.

The CSI principle
Exact formula first, named allowances second, packs last.
The formula quantity is what the candles contain; the purchase quantity is what the process consumes. Keep them on separate lines and you will always know which number moved.

Where this order goes next

Fifty candles is a pilot-sized run, and the next questions are usually about scale and variety. The 100-candle Lavender hub runs the same method on a run twice the size, with the wick as the deciding material. Two fragrances in one run shows how to share one wax pack across two oils, and 25 each of four fragrances splits a combined wax purchase across four. If you want the smallest possible leftover rather than the cheapest order, the minimum-leftover post picks packs closest to the need. And the 6% versus 8% post shows what a lower load does to the vanilla line.

Exactly 800 g of vanilla is what fifty candles hold. What you buy is 800 g plus the tests, the rejects and the jug — each one named.

Making a different vanilla? CSI also lists blended vanillas such as Cinnamon Vanilla and Vanilla Orange Blossom in Fragrance Oils — check each listing's in-stock sizes before you round, because not every oil has a 15 g or 500 g size.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both vanillas on this page at the same price, so we have no reason to steer you to either — and every reason to tell you not to buy a kilo of one before you have burned both.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Wick, sticker and jar prices and stock are re-checked 4 October 2026. Every quantity, convention comparison, pack combination and leftover value is computed and shown so you can check it.

The four test candles, 3% rejects, 4% pour loss and 2% breakage are labelled working assumptions. CSI 464's 10% is the wax maker's stated maximum as quoted on CSI's product page, not a regulatory limit. CSI publishes no throw, discolouration, composition or IFRA data for the vanillas here and no jar fill or wick-per-diameter data for the White Matte jar. Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil for 50 candles of 200 g at 8%?
800 g exactly, 16 g per candle, if 8% is a share of the finished weight. With four test candles, 3% rejects and 4% pour loss, buy for 926.4 g.
Is fragrance load a percentage of wax or of total weight?
Both conventions are used. CSI uses total finished weight. On a 200 g candle that is 16 g of oil; 8% of wax with the candle held at 200 g is 14.81 g. Pick one, write it on your BOM and use it in both testing and production.
How much soy wax for 50 candles of 200 g?
9,200 g at 8%. With allowances 10,653.0 g, which is 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg of CSI 464 at ₹5,581.40.
What is the maximum fragrance load for CSI 464 soy wax?
CSI's product page states up to 10%. It is the wax maker's formulation maximum, not a target and not a regulatory limit. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468 state 13%.
Vanilla Bean or Dark Vanilla for candles?
CSI publishes no throw or discolouration data for either, and they cost the same at every size. Pour two test candles of each, cure, burn and shelf-test them side by side, then buy the production quantity of the winner.
Should I buy 1 kg of fragrance oil for 50 candles?
Not for this run. The production need is about 858 g; a 500 g bottle plus 100 g bottles and small top-ups covers it for less, and per-gram prices barely fall above 100 g for most CSI oils.

Non-price figures and assumptions: BOM convention used on every page in this series: load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Allowances are applied in one order — whole test candles, then a reject allowance (÷ (1 − reject rate)) on wax, oil, wicks and stickers, then pour loss on wax and oil only, then breakage on glass only, then rounding up to listed in-stock CSI packs. A rejected candle is assumed to be remade with new wax, oil, wick and sticker in a cleaned jar; a jar that cannot be reused counts as breakage. Working figures on this page: 8% load (the title's figure), 4 test candles (2 vanillas × 2), 3% rejects, 4% pour loss, 2% jar breakage. Conventions compared: 8% of finished weight (16 g oil), 8% of wax with a 200 g candle (14.81 g), 8% of 184 g added on top (14.72 g). What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range in the spec table, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no melt point, pour temperature, fragrance ceiling or shelf life published. CSI publishes no throw, burn-test, wick-size-per-diameter or jar-diameter data; only two fills are published (Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g, Heart Cutout Velvet Jar 50 g wax capacity). Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
