I Want to Make a Black Oud Candle in an 8 cm Jar — Which Raw Materials Need Testing Together Before I Finalise Wax, Dye and Wick Quantities?
शेयर करना
How much dye? CSI publishes no dose in its data and this page invents none. Take D from the black dye's product page and test ½ D, ¾ D and D; dye needed = dose × wax weight.
What is in the kit? CSI 464 and CSI 468, Dark Vanilla Oud, black liquid dye 15 ml, Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided, stickers — ₹3,892.88. Your 8 cm jars are extra.
How many candles? 6 colour pucks + 14 jar candles: 12 in the wick × wax matrix (each cell 2 dyed + 1 undyed control) and 2 full-life — against 36 for every combination.
Why black changes the test
Most candle development settles the wick in undyed wax and adds colour at the end. For pale shades that is usually a reasonable shortcut. For a deep black it is not. Reaching a true black takes a lot of colourant relative to a pastel, and in general candle-making practice dyed candles are commonly re-tested with their wick, because the dye is extra material in the wax the flame has to burn. A wick that gives a clean, full pool in undyed wax may behave differently once the wax is black. CSI publishes no data on how its dyes affect burn, so the only way to know is to test the wick in the dyed wax.
That is the meaning of "tested together" in the title. The wax, the dye level and the wick all interact: the wax decides how the colour develops and how the pool forms; the dye level decides the shade and adds to what the wick burns; the wick decides the pool. Fix the oil and the load so that only those three move. This page uses Dark Vanilla Oud at 8% as the fixed oil — the large-room oud post is the place to choose between ouds and loads.
The 8 cm jar: what the diameter tells you
The 8 cm is your jar's figure — CSI does not publish internal diameters for any of its jars, and this page does not assign a wick size to a diameter, because no such chart is published. What the diameter does give you is geometry. The melt-pool surface a wick has to reach in an 8 cm jar is π × 8² ÷ 4 = 50.27 cm². Diameter matters more than it looks: a jar 0.5 cm wider has 12.9% more surface to melt; one 0.5 cm narrower has 12.1% less. So measure the internal diameter at the fill line, not the outside of the glass.
| Internal diameter | Pool area | Versus 8 cm |
|---|---|---|
| 7.5 cm | 44.18 cm² | −12.1% |
| 8.0 cm | 50.27 cm² | — |
| 8.5 cm | 56.75 cm² | +12.9% |
The title does not give the jar's fill, so this page uses a labelled example of 200 g: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax at 8% (CSI convention: load is a share of the finished weight). Weigh water to your fill line, convert with a commonly used approximation of about 0.86–0.90 g of wax per ml (an assumption), and confirm with one weighed pour; if your fill is different, every gram scales with it. Because the jar is yours, it is not in the CSI subtotal.
The dye ladder, built from the product-page dose
Open the Candle Dye Liquid Black product page and note the dose it states — call it D, in whatever unit the page uses per weight of wax. The ladder is three steps at and below that dose: ½ D, ¾ D and D. Steps above the page dose are not part of this kit; if D does not reach the black you want, ask CSI on WhatsApp before going further rather than overdosing on a guess. The same ladder applies if you use Black Dye Chips (₹236.00, in limited stock — confirm on WhatsApp before planning around them), using the chips' page dose instead.
| Part of the kit | Dyed wax (incl. 5% allowance) | Dye at the highest step (D) | Your figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour ladder, per wax (½ D + ¾ D + D pucks) | 86.9 g | less than D × 0.087 kg | _____ |
| Burn candles, dyed, per wax | 966.0 g | D × 0.966 kg | _____ |
| Whole kit, both waxes | 2,105.9 g | at most D × 2.106 kg | _____ |
| Production, 60 candles (example) | 12,358.7 g | D* × 12.359 kg (D* = the step that passed) | _____ |
The kit dyes at most 2.11 kg of wax in all. Whether one 15 ml bottle covers that depends entirely on D — multiply it out before you order, and if the answer is more than 15 ml, take the 50 ml (₹472.00) instead. The colour pucks are 30 g pours (wax plus oil at 8%) in any small heat-safe cup you already have; they never get a wick. Judge them cold, in daylight, at 48 hours and again at 7 days, because colour in soy commonly shifts as the wax sets.
The kit: wax, dye and wick together
Testing every combination — two waxes × three dye steps × two wicks, three candles each — would be 36 candles. The design below is 14 jar candles plus six pucks, because the dye step is chosen cold first and only the passing step is burned. In each wax–wick cell, two dyed candles burn beside one undyed control: the control shows what the dye changed. CSI 464's page states fragrance up to 10% and CSI 468's up to 13%, so 8% sits inside both.
| Stage | Wax | Dye | Wick | Pieces | What it decides |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · colour ladder | CSI 464 · CSI 468 | ½ D · ¾ D · D | None | 6 pucks of 30 g | The lowest step that reaches your black, per wax |

| Candle Dye Liquid Black | D × up to 2.11 kg of wax | 1 × 15 ml (50 ml if your D needs it) | ₹236.00 | Carry to production |

| CSI kit subtotal | ₹3,892.88 | |||
| Your 8 cm jars (not CSI) | 14 + 2 spare | Your supplier | Example only |
Each wick type is used in six candles (two dyed and one control in each wax), plus two spares, so an Eco Thick C2 10-pack (₹94.40) and a Cotton Braided 10-pack (₹120.00) cover stage 2; stage 3's two full-life candles use the spares of whichever wick won. Dark Vanilla Oud's 250.3 g is cheapest as 2 × 100 g + 4 × 15 g; its 50 g is ₹6.40 a gram and its 100 g ₹5.90, so the 15 g bottles only close the gap. Both waxes come as 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g.

Safety is never traded for colour or throw. The acceptance line is "no worse than the undyed control and the other wick, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to" (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US standard; read it for its own requirements).
Finalising wax, dye and wick quantities
Only after stage 3 can the quantities be final, because the wax, the dye step and the wick all came out of the same test. The example below is a labelled run of 60 candles in CSI 464 with Eco Thick C2, at the example 200 g fill: 2 QC candles, ÷ (1 − 4%) for rejects, + 4% pour loss on wax and oil, then real CSI packs. Your jars are not in the CSI subtotal; allow your own breakage on them (the example below uses 2%).

| Your 8 cm jars × 66 | Your supplier | Example ₹60.00 each = ₹3,960.00 — not CSI |
If CSI 468 won instead, the CSI subtotal before dye is ₹15,071.90. Note the dye row: it is a formula, not a number, because the dose is the dye page's and the step is your test's. Work it out once — D* × 12.36 kg — round up to whole bottles, and write the result on your production card. The monthly consolidation post shows where dye fits in a combined monthly order.

The pale end of the same problem is the pastel-pink rose post, where the dye ladder runs at low doses and the load is tested too. The brief → kit → production method is in the lavender hub. If the same 8 cm jar runs across your whole range, the one-jar monthly purchase post and the 10-SKU standardisation post show how to keep dye and wick variants under control; the 100 × 200 g lavender in 8 cm jars calculator runs the quantities for an undyed candle in the same jar size.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell the dye, and this page tells you to use the lowest step that reaches your black, to take the dose from the dye's own page rather than from us guessing, and to consider a black jar that needs no dye at all.
