Find one base wick with a representative oil, then give each of the other four fragrances a short confirmation burn and switch wick only where it fails.
20 candles
five oils × two wicks × two jars: a suggested starting test for a five-scent set
Quick answers — read this first
Can all five fragrances use the same wick? Possibly, but you only know after a confirmation burn for each. Oils differ in how they behave in the pool, so approve the wick per fragrance.

Do I need five full wick tests? No. Find a base wick with one representative oil such as Lavender, then confirm it in the other four, switching only where a candle fails.

Which oil in a set is most likely to need a different wick? Vanillin-rich gourmands such as Dark Vanilla often behave differently, and any oil you load higher, such as Citrus Lemon at the upper end, needs rechecking at that load.

How much does a wick test for a five-scent set cost? About ₹2,722.45 in the worked example: five 50 g oils, 1 kg CSI 464, Eco C1 and C2 wicks, and 25 Black mini jars.
The short answer
Rule: Identical jars fix diameter and fill, not oil behaviour; each fragrance needs its own confirmation burn.
Method: Base wick with one oil, then two-plus-two confirmation jars per remaining oil.
Load link: Any oil's wick approval is valid only at the load it was tested.
Oil cost per 50 g candle at 8%, from 500 g packsCitrus Lemon₹11Woody Oud₹18Blue Ocean₹20Lavender₹21Dark Vanilla₹31
Within one set the oil cost per candle nearly triples between the cheapest and the dearest scent.
Straight answer
I Want to Make a Candle Discovery Set With Five 50 g Candles — Should Each Fragrance Have Its Own Wick Test Even Though All Jars Are Identical?
Yes, each fragrance needs its own confirmation burn, even in identical jars, but not five full wick searches. Identical 50 g jars fix the diameter, fill and wax; the oil still changes how the wick burns. Find a base wick with one representative oil, such as Lavender at 8%, comparing Eco C1 and C2. Then pour each other oil with that base wick and the alternative, burn after the stated cure, and switch only the oils that fail. In the worked example the twenty-candle test costs ₹2,722.45 and a finished five-candle set about ₹360.46 in materials.
One line: one base wick, five confirmations, and an approved wick written next to every oil name.
Both Eco wick sizes cost the same per wick at every pack size, so splitting a set between C1 and C2 adds no penalty.

The short answer: one starting wick, five confirmations

Identical jars give you identical starting conditions, not identical results; each fragrance still has to prove the wick in its own candle.

Five matching 50 g jars make the testing easier, because the diameter, fill and wax are fixed. What they do not fix is the oil. Fragrance oils differ in how they behave in a melt pool: some thicken it, some carry vanillin that changes how the wax burns, some are light and volatile. Any of those can turn a wick that is perfect for one scent into a wick that drowns or flares with another.

So the practical answer is neither "one wick for all" nor "start from scratch five times". It is a two-stage plan. Find a base wick with one representative oil, then run a short confirmation burn for each of the other four, and only switch wick for the oils that fail. That is far cheaper than five full wick searches and far safer than none.

A five-oil discovery set and why each oil is a separate risk

Take a discovery set that spans families, which is the point of a discovery set. Here is one built from CSI oils, with the reason each one deserves its own confirmation.

The set
Five 50 g candles and what to watch in each
Oil Family What the page states Wick risk to watch
Lavender Herbal floral Stated load 6–10%; rated "Strong" on its page Usually the easiest; a good base-wick oil
Dark Vanilla Gourmand Vanillin present; will yellow light wax; soy 6–10% Vanillin-rich oils can change burn; check for soot and drowning
Woody Oud Woody Soy 6–10%; cure 48–72 h Heavier profile; check pool speed after full cure
Citrus Lemon Citrus Vanillin ~0%; page advises full cure and upper end of range If you load it higher, recheck the wick at that load
Blue Ocean Aquatic 0% vanillin; flashpoint 143°C; up to 10% Generally clean; confirm flame height at load

Lavender makes a sensible base-wick oil because it is a single-note profile with a broad stated range and no gourmand base. Dark Vanilla is the one most likely to need something different, since vanillin oils are well known to behave differently in a burn, and its page states that it will yellow white or light wax. Citrus Lemon is the other one to watch, not because of its chemistry in the pool but because its page advises the upper end of the range, and a higher load can change what the wick has to carry.

Keep the load in the plan honest
If Citrus Lemon ends up at 9% while the others sit at 8%, its wick confirmation must be done at 9%. A wick approved at one load is not approved at another.

The two-stage test plan

1
Stage one: find the base wick with Lavender. Pour Lavender at 8% of total weight in four jars: two with Eco C1, two with Eco C2. Cure for the stated 48–72 hours and burn. Pick the smallest wick that melts to the glass without a tall flame.
2
Stage two: confirm across the other four. Pour each remaining oil at its planned load with the base wick, two jars each, plus two jars with the other Eco size as a fallback. That is four jars per oil.
3
Score the same way every time. Time to a full pool, flame behaviour at the start and later in the burn, soot on the glass, and whether any wax is left clinging to the wall. Never leave a burning test unattended.
4
Approve per oil, not per set. Write the approved wick next to each oil name. If three oils approve C1 and two need C2, that is a perfectly good outcome.
5
Re-test any change. A new oil batch, a load change or a new jar colour that alters the look of the wax is a reason for one more confirmation burn.

In total that is twenty test candles: five oils × two wicks × two jars. Twenty is a suggested starting point; three jars per cell is better if you see variation.

Costing the test, then the set

Each test candle at 8% of 50 g carries 4 g of oil and 46 g of wax. Per oil, four test jars need 16 g, which is more than a 15 g sample, so buy the 50 g packs.

Item Pack Price
Lavender, Dark Vanilla, Woody Oud, Citrus Lemon, Blue Ocean 50 g each ₹270.00 + ₹410.00 + ₹271.40 + ₹170.00 + ₹247.00 = ₹1,368.40
CSI 464 wax (20 × 46 g = 920 g) 1 kg ₹507.40
Eco C1 wicks 20 ₹118.00
Eco C2 wicks 10 ₹94.40
Black Mini Glass Jars (20 needed) 25 ₹634.25
Total ₹2,722.45

For production, suppose you plan 100 sets (your figure), which is 500 candles: 100 of each oil. Each oil needs 100 × 4 g = 400 g, so one 500 g pack per oil covers it with a little spare. The five 500 g packs cost ₹2,620.00 + ₹3,840.00 + ₹2,265.60 + ₹1,420.00 + ₹2,478.00 = ₹12,623.60. Wax is 500 × 46 g = 23 kg, which is 2 × 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg of CSI 464: (2 × ₹5,074.00) + (3 × ₹507.40) = ₹11,670.20. Jars are 5 × 100 Mini Glass Jars = 5 × ₹2,124.00 = ₹10,620.00.

Wicks follow your approvals. As an illustration only, if Lavender, Woody Oud and Blue Ocean approve C1 and Dark Vanilla and Citrus Lemon need C2, you would buy 300 C1 (3 × ₹590.00 = ₹1,770.00) and 200 C2 (2 × ₹944.00 = ₹1,888.00), or ₹3,658.00 in all. Your own results decide the split.

What one set costs in materials

Per candle, wax is 46 g × ₹0.5074 (₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g) = ₹23.34 and the jar ₹2,124.00 ÷ 100 = ₹21.24. Oil per candle, priced from the 500 g packs: Lavender 4 g × ₹5.24 = ₹20.96; Dark Vanilla 4 g × ₹7.68 = ₹30.72; Woody Oud 4 g × ₹4.5312 = ₹18.12; Citrus Lemon 4 g × ₹2.84 = ₹11.36; Blue Ocean 4 g × ₹4.956 = ₹19.82. Using the illustrative wick split, one set costs (5 × ₹23.34) + ₹100.98 oil + (5 × ₹21.24) + ₹36.58 wicks = ₹360.46, excluding the set box, inserts, labels, labour, shipping and GST.

A scoring sheet that makes the decision easy

Lay the sheet out with one row per test candle and the same columns for every oil: oil, load, wick, pour date, cure days at test, minutes to a full pool, flame notes, soot, and a pass or fail. Add a short notes column for anything odd, such as a mushrooming wick head or wax left on the glass. When the twenty rows are filled in, the approved wick for each oil is usually obvious, and the sheet doubles as your production record for the set.

Where discovery sets usually go wrong

One oil tunnels, the rest are fine. That oil needs the next wick up, not a new jar or wax. Move it to C2 and confirm.
Dark Vanilla jar looks different in the box. Vanillin warms the wax tone over time, as its page states. Decide whether that is acceptable in a set where five jars sit side by side; if not, a coloured jar such as Black mini hides it.
All five pass the burn, but the set smells unbalanced unlit. That is a load question, not a wick question. Adjust loads per oil within their stated ranges, then repeat the wick confirmation only for the oils whose load changed.

A discovery set is often the customer's first contact with your brand, and they will light the scents they like most. Each candle has to burn as well as it would as a full-size product. That is why the extra twenty test jars are worth their ₹2,722.45.

Argue against interest
Buy 50 g of five oils before 500 g of any.
The test tells you which scents earn a place in the set and which wick each needs. Only then is a 500 g pack per oil a sound purchase.
Identical jars make a fair test; they do not make identical candles.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

do different fragrance oils need different wicks
They can. Oils differ in how they behave in the melt pool, and vanillin-rich or heavily loaded oils often burn differently. In identical jars, confirm the wick for each fragrance with a short burn test.
how many candles do I need to test a discovery set
A suggested starting point is twenty: five oils, two wick sizes, two jars each. Use three jars per cell if you see variation between identical candles, and always burn them after the stated cure.
can I use one wick for my whole candle collection
Only if every fragrance passes a confirmation burn with it at its own load. Many collections end up with two approved wicks. Write the approved wick next to each oil.
what fragrance load for 50g discovery set candles
A suggested starting point is 8% of total weight, or 4 g of oil per candle. Adjust per oil within each page's stated range, and recheck the wick for any oil whose load changes.
how much fragrance oil for 100 discovery sets
At 4 g per candle, each oil needs 100 × 4 g = 400 g, so one 500 g pack per oil. For the five-oil example the packs total ₹12,623.60.
why does one candle in my set burn differently
Usually the oil, not the jar. A different family, more vanillin or a higher load can make one candle tunnel or flare. Move just that oil to the next wick size and confirm.
