I Want to Make an Amber-Oud Candle in a Black Jar — What Raw Materials Should I Test to Achieve Strong Throw Without an Excessively Large Flame?
शेयर करना
Which wax should I start with? CSI 464 soy flakes is a sensible container starting point: stated load up to 10% and the same per-kg price at every pack size.
Which wick first? Eco C1 first, then Eco C2 in the same jar at the same load. CSI publishes no sizing chart, so the burn test decides.
Do I need dye? No. The black glass does the colour work, which removes dye as a variable that could change the burn.
The starting specification for this exact candle
Your concept is specific: an amber-oud scent, a black vessel, strong throw and a flame that never looks oversized. Following the usual choice order, the container comes first. The CSI matte 200 ml glass jar comes in Black Matte among other colours; its page states a fill of 200 ml and an approximate height of 8 cm and width of 7 cm. Check that the black colour is in stock before you plan around it, because some colours are listed as out of stock.
Next is the scent. CSI does not stock an amber-only oil, so be honest with yourself about what you are building. Dark Vanilla Oud lists vanilla and cardamom on top, oud and amber in the middle, and musk and cedar in the base. Woody Oud lists citrus and spice on top, oud and patchouli in the middle, and woods, amber and musk in the base. Bergamot Amber puts amber with a soft floral in its heart over a woody musk and vanilla base. That gives you two routes: one ready-composed bottle, or a two-oil blend you control.
| Element | Suggested starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Container | CSI 200 ml matte jar, Black Matte | Fixed first; about 7 cm wide |
| Wax | CSI 464 soy flakes | Container wax, stated load up to 10% |
| Oil route A | Dark Vanilla Oud alone | Oud and amber already in one bottle |
| Oil route B | Woody Oud + Bergamot Amber, 50:50 | Drier oud with a separate amber heart |
| Load | 6% and 8% of total candle weight | Both inside the stated 6–10% range |
| Wick | Eco C1, then Eco C2 | Candidates to test, not a sizing claim |
| Dye | None | The glass supplies the colour |
| Cure before burning | 48–72 h minimum, re-check at day 7 | Page minimum plus a later check |
Leaving dye out is a quiet advantage. Dye is one more ingredient that can change how the wick behaves, and a black jar makes it unnecessary.
Why strong oils and an oversized flame often arrive together
Makers chasing throw tend to raise the load and the wick at the same time. The flame grows, the candle smells strong for an hour, and then the wick mushrooms, the flame flickers and the rim darkens. Throw does not come from flame height. It comes from a melt pool that reaches close to the glass and holds a steady temperature, so the fragrance releases evenly from a wide surface.
That is why the smaller candidate goes first. If Eco C1 builds a full pool in this 7 cm jar at your chosen load within a reasonable burn, you have no reason to step up. If it tunnels or leaves a thick wall of unmelted wax, Eco C2 is the next test, and you compare the two on the same oil and load.
Dense oud and amber materials can also change the burn compared with a light citrus at the same percentage. That is a general pattern rather than a CSI-published figure, and it is exactly why each route is wicked on its own.
The eight-candle test matrix
Each route is poured at two loads and wicked two ways. Because load here is a percentage of the whole candle, a 200 g candle at 6% is 12 g of oil and 188 g of wax, and at 8% it is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax.
| Candle | Oil route | Load | Oil | Wax | Wick |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A: Dark Vanilla Oud | 6% | 12 g | 188 g | Eco C1 |
| 2 | A: Dark Vanilla Oud | 6% | 12 g | 188 g | Eco C2 |
| 3 | A: Dark Vanilla Oud | 8% | 16 g | 184 g | Eco C1 |
| 4 | A: Dark Vanilla Oud | 8% | 16 g | 184 g | Eco C2 |
| 5 | B: 6 g Woody Oud + 6 g Bergamot Amber | 6% | 12 g | 188 g | Eco C1 |
| 6 | B: 6 g + 6 g | 6% | 12 g | 188 g | Eco C2 |
| 7 | B: 8 g Woody Oud + 8 g Bergamot Amber | 8% | 16 g | 184 g | Eco C1 |
| 8 | B: 8 g + 8 g | 8% | 16 g | 184 g | Eco C2 |
Route A needs 12 + 12 + 16 + 16 = 56 g of Dark Vanilla Oud, which is more than a 50 g bottle, so the 100 g pack is the right buy. Route B needs 28 g of each oil, so 50 g of each is enough with some to spare. The wax adds up to 4 × 188 g + 4 × 184 g = 1,488 g.
How to read the result through black glass
Clear glass lets you watch the pool creep outward from the side. Black matte glass does not, so build your observations around looking down into the jar. A suggested starting routine is to note the candle at one, two and four hours: pool width against the glass, flame shape, any carbon cap on the wick, and whether a dark ring is forming on the inner rim.
Score room throw too. Place each candle in the same room for the same period, step out, and come back in to judge it fresh. Then extinguish and let the candle cool fully before relighting for the next session. A candle that throws beautifully but leaves soot on the inside of black glass will look worse to a customer than you expect, since the soot shows against the clean top edge.
What each route costs per candle
The cost build-up uses each product's per-gram price: CSI 464 at ₹507.40 per kg is ₹0.5074 per gram, and oils are priced from their 1 kg packs. Each jar is ₹708.00 ÷ 10 = ₹70.80, and an Eco C1 wick is ₹5.90.
| Line | Route A at 8% | Route B at 8% | Route A at 6% | Route B at 6% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36 | ₹93.36 | 188 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹95.39 | ₹95.39 |
| Oil | 16 g × ₹5.691 = ₹91.06 | 8 g × ₹4.5312 (₹36.25) + 8 g × ₹5.437 (₹43.50) = ₹79.75 | 12 g × ₹5.691 = ₹68.29 | 6 g × ₹4.5312 (₹27.19) + 6 g × ₹5.437 (₹32.62) = ₹59.81 |
| Jar | ₹70.80 | ₹70.80 | ₹70.80 | ₹70.80 |
| Wick | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 |
| Total | ₹261.12 | ₹249.81 | ₹240.38 | ₹231.90 |
If Eco C2 wins, add ₹9.44 − ₹5.90 = ₹3.54 per candle. These totals exclude packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST, which are your own figures to add.
Buy this to test, buy this once validated
For the test round, the list is short. Dark Vanilla Oud 100 g ₹590.00, Woody Oud 50 g ₹271.40, Bergamot Amber 50 g ₹280.00, CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 plus 500 g ₹260.00, one pack of ten black matte jars ₹708.00, Eco C1 20 wicks ₹118.00 and Eco C2 10 wicks ₹94.40. That totals ₹2,829.20, and two spare jars remain for a re-pour.
Once one route is approved, size the order to the batch. Fifty candles of route B at 8% need 50 × 8 g = 400 g of each oil, so one 500 g pack of Woody Oud at ₹2,265.60 and one of Bergamot Amber at ₹2,718.00 cover it. The wax is 50 × 184 g = 9,200 g, which fits a single 10 kg CSI 464 pack at ₹5,074.00. Five packs of ten jars cost 5 × ₹708.00 = ₹3,540.00, and fifty wicks of the winner are ₹295.00 for Eco C1 or ₹472.00 for Eco C2. Buy the small bottles first; a kilogram of an oil that failed in your black jar is the most expensive mistake on this list.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
