I Want to Make Small Decorative Body Candles — How Do I Choose a Wick That Fits the Irregular Candle Shape?
शेयर करना
Can I use a wooden wick in a body candle? It is not a good first choice. Performance Wooden Wicks are flat and tab-mounted, which is hard to thread through a small curved silicone mould.
Is the Cotton Braided Ready Made wick suitable? Its page lists it for candles over 8 cm in diameter, which is larger than most small body candles. Start with Eco C1, Eco C2 and the braided roll.
What wick size should I buy? CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, so no size is guaranteed. Burn three candidates in your own shape and wax, and buy in bulk only after one passes.
Why a body shape is hard to wick
A small decorative body candle — a seated figure, a female or male form, a pair of torsos — is not a cylinder. It narrows at the neck, widens at the shoulders, pulls in at the waist and widens again at the hips. As it burns down, the flame meets each of these widths in turn.
That is the whole wicking problem. A wick that is comfortable in the wide hips may be far too strong for the narrow waist, where the melt pool can reach the outer wall and run down the side. A wick that is gentle enough for the waist may leave a thick unmelted shell at the hips. You are not looking for a perfect wick; you are looking for the one that fails least, and fails safely.
CSI does not list torso or body moulds, so this page assumes your own silicone mould. The worked example is a small figure with a real wax fill of 90 g, standing 9 cm tall, measured at 4.5 cm across the shoulders, 3 cm at the waist and 5 cm across the hips. Your measurements replace these.
Map your shape before you choose
Measure a finished, unwicked test casting rather than the mould itself; the wax is what burns. Use a ruler or calipers across the widest line at each zone and note it on a simple sheet. Also note where the wick will run: most body moulds pour from the flat base with the wick threaded out through a small hole at the head.
| Zone | Width | Risk during burn | What to record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head and neck | about 2 cm | Flame starts in very little wax; can flicker or drown | Does it stay lit and settle within the first session |
| Shoulders | 4.5 cm | Wide but shallow; wax can pool towards the arms | Melt pool width against 4.5 cm |
| Waist | 3 cm | Narrowest point; side wall can melt through | Any leak, thin wall or side blowout |
| Hips | 5 cm | Widest zone; most wax sits here | Shell left behind, tunnelling, flame size |
Height matters as well as width. A tall, slim figure spends more of its burn in narrow zones, so it leans towards the gentler wick. A short, broad figure spends most of its burn in the hips and can usually take a stronger one. Two figures with the same 90 g fill can therefore end up with different wicks, which is why the zone sheet beats any rule of thumb based on weight.
Read the sheet as a set of limits. The waist sets the upper limit on wick strength; the hips set the lower one. If those limits do not overlap in your wax, no single wick will burn the figure cleanly, and the honest answer may be to sell it as a decorative piece that burns to a shell.
Candidate CSI wicks to test
CSI publishes no wick dimensions, burn rate, flame height or melt-pool width for any of its wicks, so every option below is a candidate, chosen for how well it suits a small threaded shape.
Eco Candle Wicks, Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
Natural-fibre wicks of cotton and paper, described as clean burning. Thin (C1) costs ₹5.90 each at every pack; Thick (C2) costs ₹9.44 each. For a figure of this size these are the obvious first pair: C1 as the gentler option for the waist, C2 as the stronger option for the hips. Their length is not published, so check that one reaches through your figure with enough left to trim.
A length from the Braided Wick Roll
The Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs gives 61 m for ₹706.82, or ₹706.82 ÷ 61 = ₹11.59 per metre. It threads easily through a head-hole and can be cut to any height; a suggested 12 cm for a 9 cm figure costs 0.12 m × ₹11.59 = ₹1.39.
Two CSI wicks are set aside. The Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are listed for candles over 8 cm in diameter, well beyond a 5 cm hip. Performance Wooden Wicks are flat and tab-mounted, which is awkward to pass through a small curved mould and hard to centre in a narrow waist.
A nine-piece wick trial
Three wicks, three pieces each, is a suggested starting set. Pour all nine in the same wax and on the same day, so the only change is the wick. For body candles that wax is usually Soy Pillar Wax or Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets; container soy is too soft for a free-standing figure. Nine pieces at 90 g use 810 g, so one 1 kg pack covers the trial.
Reading the results
Compare the three pieces of each wick before comparing wicks with each other. If one C2 piece leaked and two did not, look first at centring and wall thickness in that casting; a single odd result is often the pour, not the wick. If all three pieces of a wick fail the same zone in the same way, that is a pattern, and that wick is out.
A pass means: lights and settles in the head, melts most of the shoulders, burns through the waist without softening the outer wall, and reaches the hips with a steady flame. Some wax left at the hips is acceptable. Smoke, a flame that flares up, or wax running down the outside is not.
Fragrance and dye both change how a wick behaves, so run the trial at the load and colour you plan to sell. If you are scenting, a suggested 4% of total weight in a 90 g figure is 3.6 g oil and 86.4 g wax.
Buy this to test, buy this once validated
Buy this to test: Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹600.00 (or paraffin pellets 1 kg ₹354.00), Eco C1 pack of 20 ₹118.00, Eco C2 pack of 10 ₹94.40, the Braided Wick Roll ₹706.82 and a Bamboo Wick Holder set ₹118.00. In Soy Pillar Wax that is ₹600.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 + ₹706.82 + ₹118.00 = ₹1,637.22.
Keep the nine burned pieces, labelled, until your first production batch has sold. They are your evidence if a buyer reports a leak, and a quick visual reference for the next figure you design.
Buy this once validated: wicks for the winner only. Fifty figures with C1 cost ₹295.00 for the 50-pack; with C2, ₹472.00; with the cut braid, the roll you already own covers them (50 × 0.12 m = 6 m). Wax per figure in Soy Pillar Wax is 90 g × ₹0.60 = ₹54.00, so the 5 kg pack at ₹3,000.00 covers the fifty (4.5 kg) with a little spare. Add your own packaging, labour, shipping and GST to these raw-material costs.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
