Pillar candles · wedding décor
An even burn in a tall pillar comes from a straight centred wick, a level base, a still room and a wick tested down the full height.
16.5 kg
wax for 60 tall pillars at a 250 g fill with a suggested 10% allowance
Quick answers — read this first
Which wax for tall wedding pillars? Test Soy Pillar Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, both listed for pillar work. Container waxes are too soft to stand tall.

Which wick for a 5 cm tall pillar? Test Eco C1, Eco C2 and a length cut from the Braided Wick Roll. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, and Eco wick lengths are not published, so check they reach 15 cm.

How many moulds do I need for 60 pillars? At a suggested one release per mould per day, six moulds make 60 pillars in ten working days. Plan from your wedding date backwards.

Should wedding pillars be scented? Usually not for dining tables, where many lit pillars close to food can overwhelm guests. If scent is wanted, keep it for entrance or lounge areas and test it.
The short answer
Mould: CSI Ribbed Pillar 5 × 15 cm (₹1,414.82) or your own taller mould; enough of them for your date.
Wax and wick: Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets; Eco C1, Eco C2 or cut braided wick, tested two by three.
Even burn: Centred primed wick, level base, still air, trimmed wick and a burn test down the full height.

The full-height burn is the step most often skipped, and the one that decides how the pillar behaves at the end of the reception.
Straight answer
I Want to Make Tall Pillar Candles for Wedding Décor — What Wax and Wick Should I Start Testing for an Even Controlled Burn?
For tall wedding pillars, test Soy Pillar Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets against three candidate wicks: Eco C1, Eco C2 and a length cut from the Braided Wick Roll. Use CSI's Ribbed Pillar mould at 5 × 15 cm or your own taller mould. An even, controlled burn depends on a primed wick held dead centre, a level base, a draught-free spot and a trimmed wick, and the only proof is burning at least one test pillar all the way down. For 60 pillars at a 250 g fill you need 16.5 kg of wax with a suggested 10% allowance, and wax plus wick cost ₹152.32 per pillar in soy or ₹90.82 in paraffin.
One line: two waxes, three wicks, one pillar burned to the bottom, then sixty poured to a calendar.
CSI's Ribbed Pillar silicone mould at 5 × 15 cm (₹1,414.82) gives a tall décor pillar shape; the 5 × 10 cm version is ₹1,060.82.

What an even burn needs in a tall pillar

A tall pillar looks perfect for the first hour of almost any test. The truth is lower down.

A tall, narrow pillar has a long way to burn. In the first session almost any wick looks acceptable; the problems appear later, when heat has built up in the column, the wick has curled or drifted, or a draught has pushed the flame into one wall. Wedding décor adds its own stresses: long receptions, fans and air-conditioning, and dozens of pillars lit at once.

Four things decide whether a pillar burns evenly: a wax firm enough to hold its walls, a wick that is centred, straight and correctly strong, a level base so the melt pool sits flat, and still air. Only the first two come from raw materials; the last two come from your workshop and the venue.

It helps to define what even means before you test, so you can judge every pillar the same way. A suggested working definition: the melt pool stays centred and roughly level, the flame stays steady and upright, wax drips only rarely and never runs in streams, the walls stay firm enough that the pillar does not lean, and the wick does not smoke or mushroom heavily between trims. Write that list on your test sheet.

Mould, wax and wick to start testing

Mould

CSI lists a Ribbed Pillar silicone mould at 5 × 10 cm (₹1,060.82) and 5 × 15 cm (₹1,414.82), plus a tall Pillar Candle Mould at 11.2 × 6.3 cm (₹942.82) and a Polycarbonate Pillar Candle Mould (₹942.82). For tall wedding décor this page uses the 5 × 15 cm ribbed mould; if the planner wants 20 cm or taller pillars, that mould is your own, and the same method applies. CSI publishes no cycle-life figure for any mould.

Wax

Soy Pillar Wax (₹600.00 per kg) and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets (₹354.00 per kg) are the two CSI waxes listed for pillar work. Paraffin generally gives vivid colour and a smooth sheen; Soy Pillar Wax suits a natural brief. CSI publishes no melt point for either, so do not describe them to a planner with a temperature.

Wick

A 5 cm pillar is narrow, so start gentle. Eco C1 (₹5.90) and Eco C2 (₹9.44) are natural-fibre candidates, but their length is not published; check that one runs the full 15 cm with enough to trim before you rely on it. A length cut from the Braided Wick Roll (61 m for ₹706.82, or ₹11.59 per metre) always reaches. The Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are listed for diameters over 8 cm and stand 10.16 cm tall, so they are neither the right width class nor long enough here.

Test matrix
Six test pillars, 5 × 15 cm, 250 g real fill (suggested starting set)
Pillar Wax Wick Watch for
1 Soy Pillar Wax Eco C1 Tunnelling down the centre; drowning flame
2 Soy Pillar Wax Eco C2 Wall softening, lean in the lower half
3 Soy Pillar Wax Braided roll, 20 cm cut Mushrooming, smoke, pool width
4 Paraffin pellets Eco C1 Drips down the ribs, small pool
5 Paraffin pellets Eco C2 Blowout through a rib wall
6 Paraffin pellets Braided roll, 20 cm cut Flame height and drift over time

Expect the two waxes to fail differently. A soy pillar that is underwicked tends to tunnel, leaving a thick wall that later collapses inwards; a paraffin pillar that is overwicked tends to drip and run down the ribs. Note which failure you see, because it tells you which direction to move the wick, and keep the burned stubs labelled beside the test sheet.

Six pillars at 250 g use 1.5 kg, so 1 kg of each wax covers the matrix with a little spare.

Burn-testing for the whole reception

1
Prime and centre.Dip each wick in melted wax so it stays straight, thread it through the mould, and hold it taut and central with a wick holder while the wax sets.
2
Level the base. After release, check each pillar stands flat. A base that rocks tilts the melt pool towards one wall.
3
Trim before every lighting.Trim to a suggested 5–6 mm. A long wick on a tall pillar is the commonest cause of smoke and drips.
4
Burn in reception-length sessions.Burn in sessions of a suggested 3 hours, about the length of an evening, on heat-safe trays, never unattended. Note pool width, drips, flame and lean at the end of each.
5
Burn the best pair to the bottom.Take the best wax-and-wick pair through repeated sessions until the pillar is finished. If it starts to lean, tunnel or flare in the lower third, it fails, however good the first hour looked.
Drips down one rib. Ribbed pillars often drip where a thin rib meets the pool. Check the wick is centred and the base level first; if drips persist, try the next gentler wick before changing wax.
Flickering on the lawn. Outdoor and fan-cooled venues push flames sideways. Test one pillar in moving air, and recommend that the planner uses hurricane glasses or keeps pillars away from airflow.

Most wedding table pillars are left unscented so many open flames near food do not overwhelm guests. If the couple wants fragrance, reserve it for entrance or lounge pillars and test those separately, because oil changes how the wick behaves.

Quantities, moulds and the wedding date

The worked order is 60 pillars at a real fill of 250 g. 60 × 250 g = 15 kg; a suggested 10% allowance for tests and rejects brings it to 16.5 kg.

In Soy Pillar Wax that is 10 kg (₹6,000.00) + 5 kg (₹3,000.00) + 1 kg (₹600.00) + 500 g (₹300.00) = ₹9,900.00. In paraffin pellets it is sixteen 1 kg packs and one 500 g pack: 16 × ₹354.00 = ₹5,664.00, plus ₹177.00, so ₹5,841.00.

Wick at a suggested 20 cm per pillar (15 cm plus room to tie and trim) is 60 × 0.20 m = 12 m. One roll covers it, and the share used is 12 × ₹11.59 = ₹139.04, or ₹2.32 per pillar. Wax plus wick is therefore 250 × ₹0.60 + ₹2.32 = ₹152.32 per pillar in soy, or 250 × ₹0.354 + ₹2.32 = ₹90.82 in paraffin, before dye, packaging, labour, transport and GST.

If the palette includes colour, Candle Dye Chips (₹236.00–₹250.00 per pack) or Candle Dye Liquid (from ₹236.00 for 15 g/ml) suit both waxes; the dye page notes colour looks lighter in soy and more vivid in paraffin. CSI publishes no dosage per kg, so pour a small colour sample, match it to the planner's swatch in daylight, and record the amount you used per kilo for the production batch.

Moulds are the bottleneck
At a suggested one release per mould per day, one mould takes 60 working days for this order; six moulds take ten. Six 5 × 15 cm ribbed moulds cost 6 × ₹1,414.82 = ₹8,488.92, which may exceed the wax bill, so agree the delivery date before quoting and include the moulds you need.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

Buy this to test: Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹600.00, Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets 1 kg ₹354.00, one Ribbed Pillar 5 × 15 cm mould ₹1,414.82, Eco C1 pack of 20 ₹118.00, Eco C2 pack of 10 ₹94.40, the Braided Wick Roll ₹706.82 and a Pen Thermometer ₹354.00. Total: ₹3,642.04.

Before you hand over the order, give the planner a one-page care note: trim wicks before lighting, keep pillars on heat-safe holders or trays, keep them away from fans, curtains and floral arrangements, and never leave them burning unattended. A well-tested pillar can still misbehave if forty are lit under a ceiling fan, and a note protects both the couple and your name.

Buy this once validated: the winning wax in the quantities above, the remaining moulds for your schedule, and dye if the palette needs it, tested in one pillar first because colour also changes the burn. The roll from your test set already covers the wick for all sixty.

Argue against interest
Buy the moulds before the extra wax.
A wedding order fails on the calendar more often than on the material. Spend first on enough moulds to meet the date, and order wax for the pillars you can actually pour.
The first hour flatters every pillar; the last hour tells the truth.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wax for tall pillar candles?
Test Soy Pillar Wax and Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, the two CSI waxes listed for pillar work. Keep the one that holds its walls and burns evenly down the full height in your test.
What wick should I use for a 5 cm pillar candle?
CSI publishes no wick sizing chart. Test Eco C1, Eco C2 and a length cut from the Braided Wick Roll, checking that pre-made wicks are long enough for the full height of your pillar.
Why do my tall pillar candles drip?
Common causes are an off-centre wick, an untrimmed wick, an uneven base and draughts. Ribbed shapes drip where thin ribs meet the pool. Fix centring and trimming before changing wax.
How long should I burn-test a wedding pillar candle?
Burn in sessions of a suggested 3 hours, about the length of an evening, and take at least one test pillar all the way down. Lower-third behaviour often differs from the first session.
How much wax do I need for 60 pillar candles?
Multiply your real fill weight by 60 and add a suggested 10% allowance. At a 250 g fill that is 15 kg plus 1.5 kg, so 16.5 kg of Soy Pillar Wax or paraffin pellets.
Should wedding pillar candles be scented?
Usually not on dining tables, because many lit pillars near food can overwhelm guests. If scent is wanted, use it on entrance or lounge pillars, and wick-test those at the chosen load.
