I Want to Make Wax Melts Instead of Jar Candles — Which Candle-Making Materials Can I Eliminate from My Shopping List?
शेयर करना
What stays? Wax, fragrance oil, scale, thermometer and jug. The wax may change: CSI 464 is capped at 10% by its maker, so melts above 10% need Chunks or CSI 468 (13%).
What is added? A format — melt containers at ₹29.50 each, or a cavity mould from ₹153.40 — plus a warmer for testing and packaging (non-CSI).
What does 100 packs cost? ₹10,902.20 in CSI items at an illustrative 60 g and 10% in Chunks. See the melt BOM.
The line-by-line answer
That one sentence sorts most of the list. A wick exists to burn; a melt is warmed from below by a separate warmer, so the wick goes, and with it everything that holds, centres, sticks or trims a wick. A glass jar exists to contain a burning pool for hours; a melt needs only a container to sell it in, or none at all if it comes out of a silicone mould and goes into a bag. What stays is everything that makes the scented wax itself: the wax, the fragrance oil, and the scale, thermometer and jug you use to combine them.
To make the comparison concrete, this page sets a jar-candle plan you might be replacing — 50 candles of 200 g in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8%, in White Matte Glass Jars with Eco Thin C1 wicks — beside a melt plan of 100 packs in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 10%. Both use Fresh Strawberries. The melt pack weight is illustrative: CSI does not publish the fill weight of its melt containers, so this page uses the series convention of six 10 g cubes, 60 g a pack, labelled "if your container holds 60 g".
| Item | Need | Buy | Price | For melts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10,538.4 g | 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 1 kg | ₹5,581.40 | keep (changes) |
| Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil | 916.4 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹3,540.00 | keep |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 56 jars | 6 × 10-pack | ₹4,248.00 | eliminate |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 60 wicks | 3 × 20-pack | ₹354.00 | eliminate |
| Wick Stickers | 60 stickers | 2 × 40-sheet | ₹200.00 | eliminate |
| Wick Centering Device | hold wicks while setting | 2 packs of 5 | ₹236.00 | eliminate |
| Wick Trimmer | trim before burn tests | 1 | ₹177.00 | eliminate |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | weighing | 1 | ₹354.00 | keep |
| Pen Thermometer | temperatures | 1 | ₹354.00 | keep |
| Candle Wax Pouring Jug | pouring | 1 | ₹531.00 | keep |
| Jar-plan CSI total | ₹15,575.40 | |||
| Lines eliminated | ₹5,215.00 | 33% of the jar order |
In this example the eliminated lines are ₹5,215.00 — 33% of the jar order — and almost all of it is glass: ₹4,248.00 of jars against ₹967.00 for everything wick-related. That is the honest headline. Melts do not save you much on wick; they save you the container, and they swap it for a much cheaper one.
What stays, but changes
Two lines stay on the list but should not be copied across unchanged. The first is the wax. CSI does not list a melt-specific wax. What matters for a melt is a wax you can load with fragrance and that releases cleanly from your container or mould. The one published fact that bears on that is the fragrance ceiling: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 are stated by their makers at up to 13%, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at up to 10%. If your jar candles run in CSI 464 and you want melts above 10%, you need a different wax for the melts — which is why this page moves them to Chunks. The ceiling is a formulation maximum, not a target, and never a reason to exceed 13%.
The second is the fragrance load. Melt makers commonly run higher loads than candle makers because a warmer pool is small and shallow; that is a general practice, not a CSI measurement, and only your warmer test can say what your melts need. At this page's working 10%, a 60 g pack holds 6.0 g of oil and 54.0 g of wax. Here is the same 100-pack run at three loads, all inside Chunks' published 13%:
| Load | Oil per pack | Wax per pack | Oil for the run | Wax for the run | Allowed in CSI 464? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8% | 4.8 g | 55.2 g | 540.6 g | 6,217.0 g | Yes |
| 10% | 6.0 g | 54.0 g | 675.8 g | 6,081.8 g | Yes |
| 12% | 7.2 g | 52.8 g | 810.9 g | 5,946.7 g | No — above its 10% |
What goes onto the list
Three things are new. The first is the format: either a container you pour into and sell, or a mould you pour into and empty. CSI lists Wax Melts Containers Empty in Heart and Square styles — ₹147.50 for 5, ₹295.00 for 10, ₹1,475.00 for 50 and ₹2,950.00 for 100, a flat ₹29.50 each — with no fill weight published, and a set of cavity moulds: the 40 Cavity Square Mould (₹472.00), 55 Cavity Coffee Bean Mould (₹177.00), 15 Cavity Rose Mould (₹153.40), Cloud Mould 30 Cavity (₹529.82) and Mini Heart Mould (₹153.40) among them, none with a published cavity weight. CSI does not list clamshells by that name.
The second is a warmer for testing. You cannot burn-test a melt; you warm-test it, in the kind of warmer your customer will use, and score throw and how long the scent lasts. CSI does not sell warmers or tealights, so the warmer — and any tealights it needs — is a non-CSI example line. The third is outer packaging and labels, which a jar candle's lid and label partly covered; for melts it is often the whole presentation. Those are non-CSI example lines too.
| Item | Why | Example figure |
|---|---|---|
| Electric or tealight wax warmer | warm-testing the melts as a customer would | ₹450.00 (example) |
| Tealights for a tealight warmer | test heat source — bought finished; CSI lists no tealight cups | ₹150.00 (example) |
| Label per pack | scent, weight, safety text | ₹500.00 for 100 (example) |
| Outer box or sleeve | only if your container is not the retail pack | ₹1,200.00 for 100 (example) |
The melt BOM, stacked and rounded
The allowance stack is shorter for melts than for jar candles, because two of its steps simply disappear. There is no burn-test candle in the jar sense — the tests are warmer tests on whole packs — and there is no glass, so the breakage step is empty. What remains is tests, rejects and pour loss, applied once each, then rounding.
| Step | Rule | Wax | Oil | Containers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net | 100 packs × per-pack | 5,400.0 g | 600.0 g | 100 |
| 1 · Tests | +2 whole packs for warmer tests | 5,508.0 g | 612.0 g | 102 |
| 2 · Rejects | production ÷ (1 − 5%) | 5,792.2 g | 643.6 g | 108 (rounded up) |
| 3 · Pour loss | +5% on wax and oil only | 6,081.8 g | 675.8 g | — |
| 4 · Breakage | glass only — none in a melt line | — | — | — |
| 5 · Packs | cheapest in-stock CSI combination | 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 10-pack |
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 6,081.8 g | 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g | ₹3,893.00 |
| Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil | 675.8 g | 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g | ₹2,525.20 |
| Wax Melts Containers Empty (Heart or Square) | 108 containers | 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 10-pack | ₹3,245.00 |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | weighing | 1 | ₹354.00 |
| Pen Thermometer | temperatures | 1 | ₹354.00 |
| Candle Wax Pouring Jug | pouring | 1 | ₹531.00 |
| CSI subtotal | ₹10,902.20 | ||
| Leftover wax / oil | 418.2 g / 24.2 g | ₹337.91 |
Compare the two totals honestly. The jar plan was ₹15,575.40 for 50 candles; the melt plan is ₹10,902.20 for 100 packs. They are not the same product and not the same amount of fragrance — the jar plan buys 1,000 g of oil, the melt plan 700 g — so the comparison that matters is per unit. Per unit, before allowances, a 200 g jar candle here is about ₹229.20 in materials (of which ₹79.20 is jar, wick and sticker) and a 60 g melt pack about ₹83.09 (of which ₹29.50 is the container). The scented wax inside is ₹150.00 against ₹53.59. That is what you are really trading.
Buy now, buy after the warmer test
Pour two packs at each of 8%, 10% and 12% — six packs — and warm-test them side by side in the same warmer and room, scoring throw at fixed times and how long the scent lasts. That settles your load before you buy the production oil. Wax for the tests is small; containers for the tests come from one ten-pack. Everything else waits for the result.
| Line | Buy now | Price | Buy after the warmer test | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 340.2 g → 1 × 500 g | ₹299.00 | 5,581.8 g more → 1 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg | ₹3,594.00 |
| Fresh Strawberries | 37.8 g → 1 × 50 g | ₹212.40 | 625.8 g more at 10% → 1 × 500 g + 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g | ₹2,360.00 |
| Melt containers | 1 × 10-pack | ₹295.00 | 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 5-pack | ₹3,097.50 |
| Scale, thermometer, jug | if not owned | ₹1,239.00 | — | ₹0.00 |
| Total | ₹2,045.40 | ₹9,051.50 |
Split this way the order costs ₹11,096.90 against ₹10,902.20 in one go — a difference of ₹194.70, mostly from small test bottles of oil and the extra ten-pack of containers. If the warmer test says 8% is enough, the production oil falls to 540.6 g and the saving pays for the split several times over. Buying in bulk versus testing quantities sets out the same rule for a first jar-candle run.

When you keep both lines
Many makers do not switch — they add melts beside candles. Then the question changes from "what can I remove" to "what can I share": materials shared across candles and melts answers it line by line, and combined fragrance-oil purchasing adds the two oil requirements together without double-counting. For the moulded side of the catalogue, bubble candles and 100 sculptural candles use the same water-fill method as the melt mould. And to build any new product's list from scratch, the complete BOM before buying is the template; the 100-candle shopping list is the jar-candle original this page subtracts from. If you later run several melt scents on one wax, standardising a range applies unchanged.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's shopping list is easy to pad. Every line on this page is computed from a per-unit quantity and an allowance you can see, rounded to the cheapest in-stock pack combination we list, with the leftover shown — including where a smaller or cheaper option means a smaller order from us.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: load is a share of finished weight (oil = W × L). CSI publishes no fill weight for its melt containers, no cavity weights for its moulds, no melt dosage and no throw data. Published ceilings: Chunks 13%, CSI 468 13%, CSI 464 10%. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%; Natural Soy Pearl and Soy Pillar Wax — no melt point, pour temperature or fragrance ceiling published. The 60 g pack, 10 g cube, plan sizes, loads, test counts, reject rates, 5% pour loss, 2% breakage and one pour per mould per day are labelled illustrations. Non-CSI lines are examples. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
