Lean inventory design
Let fragrance and jar colour create the variety, and keep wax, jar shape and wicks to a minimum you can test properly.

test candles to validate six oils on one wax, one jar and two wicks
Quick answers — read this first
Can I make many candle SKUs from one wax? Yes. In this example, CSI 464, one matte 200 ml jar shape in two colours and two wicks support 6 fragrances × 2 colours = 12 SKUs from 11 stock lines.

How many wicks does a lean range need? Aim for two approved options for your jar width. For a jar around 7 cm wide, Eco C1 and Eco C2 are candidates; tests assign one per fragrance.

How much testing does one platform save? Six oils with two wicks need 36 test candles at three per combination. Three waxes would need 108; add a second jar shape and it is 216.

What does validation cost with CSI materials? About ₹9,340.92 for 36 test candles: seven 1 kg packs of CSI 464, six 100 g oils, 40 matte jars and Eco C1 and C2 wicks. Packaging is extra and is your own cost.
The short answer
Platform: One wax, one jar shape in several colours, two approved wicks.
Stock lines: 11 instead of 21 in the example, for 12 SKUs.
Testing: 36 candles instead of 108 or more when waxes and jar shapes multiply.
Wick-test candles needed for six oils (3 per combination)1 wax, 1 jar, 2 wicks36 candles3 waxes, 1 jar, 2 wicks108 candles3 waxes, 2 jars, 2 wicks216 candles
Each extra wax or jar shape multiplies the wick tests owed for every fragrance in the range.
Straight answer
I Want to Reduce the Number of Raw Materials I Keep in Inventory — Can I Design Multiple Candle SKUs Around One Wax, One Jar Family and a Small Approved Wick Range?
Yes. Build a platform of one wax, one jar shape and two approved wicks, then create variety through fragrance and jar colour. In this example, CSI 464, the matte 200 ml jar in Black Matte and White Matte, and Eco C1 and C2 wicks support 12 SKUs from six oils, using 11 stock lines instead of 21. Testing falls from more than a hundred candles to 36, costing about ₹9,340.92 with CSI materials. Each fragrance still needs its own wick test, and a scent that fails both wicks should be replaced rather than earn a third.
One line: one wax, one jar family and two wicks can carry a 12-SKU range, because fragrance and jar colour create the variety customers see.
The matte 200 ml jar family gives one 8 × 7 cm shape in several colours, so new SKUs need confirmation burns, not full development.

Why fewer materials can mean more products

Every extra wax or jar you stock multiplies the tests you owe, not just the shelves you fill.

Inventory creep usually happens one good idea at a time. A coconut wax for one candle, a pearl wax for another, three jar shapes, four wick types, a dozen oils. Each addition seemed sensible. Together they mean dozens of stock lines, reorders that never line up, and a test matrix that no small business can keep current. Yes, you can design several SKUs around one wax, one jar family and a small approved wick range. The design trick is to let the variety come from fragrance and finish, which customers notice, and not from wax and wick, which they do not.

Here a SKU means one sellable product, such as Lavender in a Black Matte jar. A stock line means one raw material you must count and reorder.

Count the stock lines and the tests, before and after

Take a typical small range that has grown without a plan and compare it with a range built on one platform. The numbers below are illustrative, but the pattern holds for most makers.

Before and after
Stock lines and the burn tests each design demands
Grown range Platform range
Waxes 3 (CSI 464, CSI 468, Natural Soy Pearl Wax) 1 (CSI 464)
Jar shapes 4 (matte 200 ml, 150 g apothecary, 120 g shiny, 85 g tin) 1 shape: matte 200 ml in Black Matte and White Matte
Wick types 4 (Eco C1, Eco C2, Ready Made, wooden) 2 (Eco C1, Eco C2)
Fragrance oils 10 6
Stock lines to manage 3 + 4 + 4 + 10 = 21 1 + 2 + 2 + 6 = 11
SKUs on sale Often 10–15, unevenly spread 6 fragrances × 2 jar colours = 12
Wick-test candles (3 per combination) Each oil in each wax, jar and candidate wick: far into the hundreds 6 oils × 2 wicks × 3 = 36

The platform range sells about as many SKUs with roughly half the stock lines. The bigger gain is in testing. Every wax, jar shape and fragrance combination needs its own wick test, so removing two waxes and three jar shapes does not cut testing by a little, it cuts it by a multiple. With three waxes instead of one, the same six oils and two wicks would already need 108 test candles; add a second jar shape and it is 216.

How to design the platform

1
Choose the one wax for your climate and format. For container candles, CSI 464 is a straightforward base: 100% soy flakes, a stated fragrance load up to 10%, a stated 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage and the same price per kg at every pack.
2
Choose a jar family, not just a jar.The matte 200 ml jar is listed in Black Matte, White Matte, Clear Frosted, Brown Matte and other colours, with the page stating height 8 cm and width 7 cm. One shape, several looks.
3
Approve two wicks for that width.Eco C1 (₹5.90) and Eco C2 (₹9.44) are sensible candidates for a jar around 7 cm wide. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, so your tests decide which fragrance gets which.
4
Choose fragrances that fit the wax and the wick range.Prefer oils with a stated soy range that includes your target load, and plan to drop any that need a third wick.
5
Write the formula sheet. For each SKU, record oil, load, wick and jar colour. Nothing else on the sheet should vary.
Colour is a free SKU
Two jar colours from the same family double your visible range without adding a wax, a wick or a fill weight. Treat a new colour as a confirmation test, one or two attended burns per fragrance as a suggested starting point, rather than a fresh development project, because the shape and fill are unchanged.

Spread the six fragrances across families so the range feels broad even though the platform is narrow: a herbal floral (Lavender), two florals of different weight (British Rose and Jasmine), a woody (Woody Oud), a gourmand (Roasted Coffee) and an aquatic (Blue Ocean). Customers read that as six distinct moods. Your store room reads it as six bottles on one shelf. If two of your candidate oils are close in character, keep the one that passes more easily on the approved wicks and costs less per gram at the pack size you will buy, and use the freed slot for a family you do not yet cover.

What the platform costs to validate

The six fragrances in this example are Lavender, British Rose, Jasmine, Woody Oud, Roasted Coffee and Blue Ocean, each at 8% of a 200 g candle: 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. Three candles per oil per wick is the suggested starting point, giving 36 test candles.

Validation purchase
Everything needed to wick-test six oils on one platform
Item Need Pack bought Cost
CSI 464 36 × 184 g = 6,624 g 7 × 1 kg ₹3,551.80
Lavender 6 × 16 g = 96 g 100 g ₹540.00
British Rose 96 g 100 g ₹342.20
Jasmine 96 g 100 g ₹430.00
Woody Oud 96 g 100 g ₹453.12
Roasted Coffee 96 g 100 g ₹390.00
Blue Ocean 96 g 100 g ₹495.00
Matte 200 ml jars 36 4 packs of 10 ₹2,832.00
Eco C1 wicks 18 20 ₹118.00
Eco C2 wicks 18 20 ₹188.80

The full validation costs ₹9,340.92: oils ₹2,650.32, wax ₹3,551.80, jars ₹2,832.00 and wicks ₹306.80. Because CSI 464 costs the same per kg at every pack, buying 7 × 1 kg or 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg comes to the same ₹3,551.80. Sandalwood was left out of this set on purpose: its 50 g and 100 g packs were out of stock on the pull, so testing it would mean a 500 g pack or several 15 g bottles. That is the kind of practical detail that should shape a lean range.

Once validated, each SKU's material cost is the fixed ₹164.16 (₹93.36 wax + ₹70.80 jar) plus its oil and wick. With an Eco C1 wick that puts Lavender at ₹253.60, British Rose ₹219.15, Jasmine ₹232.83, Woody Oud ₹242.56, Roasted Coffee ₹229.87 and Blue Ocean ₹249.36, before packaging, labour, shipping and GST. Add ₹3.54 to any SKU that needs Eco C2 instead (₹9.44 − ₹5.90).

The risks of a lean range, and how to cover them

A jar colour goes out of stock. The matte jar page notes that some colours are out of stock at times. Keep a modest reserve of each colour you sell, and choose a second colour from the same family that you have already confirmation-tested, so a stock gap does not stop a SKU.
One fragrance will not pass on either wick. Move its load a point within its stated range and retest. If it still fails, drop it from the platform rather than adding a third wick for one scent. A replacement oil that passes is cheaper to stock than a permanent extra wick line.
A new wax batch behaves differently. With one wax, every SKU depends on it. Record the batch on each production run and pour a short check batch from each new delivery before releasing it to the line.

When you later want a new format, such as minis or a larger candle, treat it as a second platform with its own jar and its own wick tests rather than bolting it onto the first. You can still share the wax and the oils. Keep each platform small and you keep both stock and testing under control.

At every stage, run test burns attended on a heat-safe surface, put out any candle that smokes or flares, and add oils below their published flashpoints. A lean range is only an advantage if each of its SKUs has been properly proven.

Argue against interest
You probably need fewer of our waxes than you stock.
Each extra wax multiplies your testing and ties up cash. If one wax passes for every product on the platform, the others are costing you more than they earn.
Let the customer see variety while the store room sees very little.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

How many raw materials does a small candle brand need?
Fewer than most hold. In this example, one wax, one jar shape in two colours, two wicks and six oils, 11 stock lines, support 12 SKUs. Add materials only when a product genuinely cannot work on the platform.
Do I need to wick-test every jar colour separately?
Treat a new colour of the same jar shape as a confirmation test rather than a full programme: one or two attended burns per fragrance is a suggested starting point, because the shape and fill do not change.
Can all my fragrances use the same wick?
Possibly, but test it. Fragrance and load affect how a wick burns. Test each oil with both approved wicks and assign the one that passes; replace any oil that passes neither.
Which CSI wax is best for a single-wax container range?
CSI 464 suits this role well on paper: 100% soy container flakes, a stated load up to 10%, a stated 60-month shelf life and flat per-kg pricing. Confirm it with your own oils and jar.
What if my chosen jar colour goes out of stock?
Keep a modest reserve and confirmation-test a second colour from the same family in advance. Switching colour within the family avoids a full retest; switching to a new jar shape does not.
How much does it cost to validate a six-fragrance range?
In this example about ₹9,340.92 at listed CSI prices for 36 test candles, covering wax, six 100 g oils, 40 matte jars and Eco C1 and C2 wicks. Packaging is extra and is your own cost.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST.
