I Want to Sell Jar Candles and Mould Candles — Can I Use the Same Wax, Fragrance Oils, Dyes and Wicks or Will I Need Separate Raw Materials?
शेयर करना
Can I use the same fragrance oils? Yes. Every oil is a scent, not a wax-specific product. One 100 g bottle covers three 200 g jars and two 250 g pillars (88 g) with 12 g spare. The load differs: CSI 464 is rated up to 10%; no ceiling is published for Soy Pillar Wax, so test within 6–10%.
Can I use the same dyes and wicks? Dyes, yes — one liquid dye bottle colours both, following the product page for the dose. Wicks, usually no: a jar wick is set on the base of the glass, while a pillar wick is threaded through the mould. Wick size for either diameter is a burn-test question.
What does a starter for both cost? Our plan for 9 jar candles and 6 pillars in three scents is ₹7,415.10, of which ₹2,434.82 is pillar-only (wax, mould, sealer, wicks). See the shopping list.
Same or separate, item by item
Jar candles and mould candles look like one product with two shapes, and new makers often assume one inventory will do. Half of it will. The fragrance oil does not know whether it is in a jar or a pillar. The scale, thermometer and jug do not either. But a container candle leans on the glass for its shape and a mould candle has to release from silicone and then stand on a table for weeks. The wax, the wick and the vessel all change because of that.
| Material | Jar candle | Mould candle | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | Container soy (CSI 464, Chunks) | Pillar soy (Soy Pillar Wax) | Separate | A pillar must release and stand; a jar wax is formulated to hold the glass |
| Fragrance oil | Yes | Yes | Shared | Same bottle; only the load and ceiling differ by wax |
| Liquid dye | Optional | Usually wanted | Shared | One bottle per colour; dose from the product page |
| Wick | Set on the jar base | Threaded through the mould | Usually separate | Different fitting; size by burn test for each diameter |
| Vessel | Glass jar, one per candle | Silicone mould, reused | Separate | Jar is a unit cost; mould is a one-off cost spread over pours |
| Mould sealer | No | Yes | Mould only | Seals the wick hole in the mould base |
| Centering device | Yes | Rarely | Mostly jar | Holds the wick upright while the jar sets |
| Scale, thermometer, jug | Yes | Yes | Shared | Buy once |
Three lines are fully shared, and they include the most decision-heavy one, the fragrance. The separate lines are the structural ones, and two of them — the mould and the sealer — are bought once and reused. So the real duplication is smaller than it looks: a second wax and a second kind of wick. If you are also thinking about wax melts, that is a third product with its own logic, and the candles-and-melts guide covers how a container wax shares with melts in a way it does not share with pillars.
Why the wax splits
Container soy waxes are made to be poured into glass, set with a smooth top and burn down inside the jar. They are commonly soft enough that a freestanding pillar made from them may not release cleanly from a mould or may slump or sweat once out of it. Pillar waxes are commonly firmer and made to release. The reverse also applies in general practice: a firmer pillar wax poured into a jar may pull away from the glass. None of this is a CSI measurement. It is general candle-making experience, and the only reliable answer for your wax, your mould and your climate is a test pour.
| Wax | Made for | 500 g | 1 kg | 5 kg | 10 kg | Stated maximum load |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | Containers | ₹260.00 | ₹507.40 | ₹2,537.00 | ₹5,074.00 | 10% |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | Containers | ₹299.00 | ₹599.00 | ₹2,995.00 | ₹5,999.00 | 13% |
| Soy Pillar Wax | Pillar and designer candles | ₹300.00 | ₹600.00 | ₹3,000.00 | ₹6,000.00 | Not published — check |
| Beeswax Pellets | Pillars, moulded | — | ₹800.00 | ₹4,000.00 | ₹8,000.00 | Not published — check |
On price the second wax barely matters. Soy Pillar Wax is ₹600.00 a kilo at every pack size, the same as the Chunks within a rupee and ₹92.60 more than CSI 464. What costs money is the part-used bag. Buy 5 kg of pillar wax for six pillars and ₹2,100.00 sits on the shelf as wax nobody has ordered. That is why the plan on this page buys 1.5 kg of pillar wax (₹900.00) for 1380 g of pour plus 5% — and why the bulk-vs-trial guide puts a new wax in the trial column until its product sells.
One bottle, two candle types
Using the series conventions, a 200 g jar at 8% holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. For the mould side we use an illustrative 250 g pillar, because CSI does not publish the volume of its moulds; weigh one finished pour from yours and rescale. At an 8% test load it holds 20 g of oil and 230 g of wax. Three jars and two pillars per scent use 88 g, so one 100 g bottle covers them with 12 g spare for a test pour.
| Oil and 100 g price | 3 jars | 2 pillars | Used | Spare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood 100 g · ₹502.68 | 3 × 16 g = 48 g | 2 × 20 g = 40 g | 88 g | 12 g |
| Cinnamon Vanilla 100 g · ₹483.80 | 3 × 16 g = 48 g | 2 × 20 g = 40 g | 88 g | 12 g |
| Bergamot Amber 100 g · ₹560.00 | 3 × 16 g = 48 g | 2 × 20 g = 40 g | 88 g | 12 g |
The load deserves care. CSI 464 is rated up to 10%, so 8% in the jars is inside its stated maximum. For Soy Pillar Wax no ceiling is published in our data, so 8% is a labelled starting point within the general 6–10% test range, not a specification. In general practice, freestanding candles are often run at a more modest load than container candles, because excess oil can weaken the structure or sweat to the surface. Test 6% and 8% pillars side by side and keep the one that holds its shape and scents the room. At 6%, a 250 g pillar needs 15 g of oil, which frees 10 g per scent in the plan above. Whether reducing fragrance load improves profit takes that question further.
Wicks, dyes and the mould
Wicks. For jars, Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 at ₹5.90 each are our series default, set on the jar base and held straight with a Wick Centering Device (5 for ₹118.00). For pillars, the wick is threaded up through the hole in the mould base and sealed with Candle Mold Sealer (₹472.00). We cost that with Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made at ₹12.00 each (flat at every pack size); check the length suits your mould height. For longer runs, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs (₹706.82) lets you cut to length. Wick size for a given jar or pillar diameter is not published, so burn-test one of each before pouring the rest.
Dyes. Liquid dye is fully shared. One 15 g bottle of Candle Dye Liquid Red (₹236.00) colours both ranges; the dose per kilo of wax is not published in our data, so follow the product page. Colour tends to matter more for pillars, where the whole candle is visible, than for jars in a white matte glass. Many makers leave jar candles natural and colour only the pillars, which makes one bottle last much longer. Dye chips (₹250.00 for red, yellow or blue) are an alternative if you prefer weighing solids.
The mould. A jar is a per-candle cost; a mould is a one-off cost that gets cheaper with every pour. The Pillar Candle Mould is ₹942.82 in either the tall (11.2 × 6.3 cm) or short (8.6 × 6.5 cm) version. How many pours a silicone mould lasts is not published, so as an example spread it over 50 pours: ₹18.86 a pillar. Over only the six pillars in this plan it is ₹157.14 a pillar, which is why a mould range only pays once it keeps selling. Replace 50 with your own count as the mould ages.
What each candle costs
With the wax split, the two ranges carry different cost structures. Jar candles use CSI 464 at ₹0.51 a gram (1 kg rate), an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80. Pillars use Soy Pillar Wax at ₹0.60 a gram, a Cotton Braided Wick at ₹12.00 and no jar — plus their share of the mould.
| Oil | Oil in 200 g jar | 200 g jar candle | Oil in 250 g pillar | 250 g pillar | Pillar + mould share (example, 50 pours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood | ₹80.43 | ₹250.49 | ₹100.54 | ₹250.54 | ₹269.39 |
| Cinnamon Vanilla | ₹77.41 | ₹247.47 | ₹96.76 | ₹246.76 | ₹265.62 |
| Bergamot Amber | ₹89.60 | ₹259.66 | ₹112.00 | ₹262.00 | ₹280.86 |
The pillar holds 50 g more wax and 4 g more oil, yet costs about the same as the jar, because it carries no ₹70.80 glass. Once the mould is paid off, a pillar range is often the cheaper one to make per gram of candle. Packaging tips it back: a freestanding pillar usually needs a box or wrap to travel, where a jar can ship in its own glass with a lid. For example, a pillar box at ₹25.00 — replace it with your packaging supplier's quote — would move each pillar up by that amount. CSI's Premium Packing Tissue Paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets (₹6.50 a sheet) if you wrap. How to calculate packaging cost per order covers the rest.

Of the ₹7,415.10, ₹3,021.48 is the shared core (oils, dye, tools), ₹1,958.80 is jar-only and ₹2,434.82 is pillar-only. The mould and sealer (₹1,414.82) are one-off costs; the next six pillars cost only wax, oil and wick. If you already own a scale, thermometer and jug, take ₹1,239.00 off.
Starting with one range first
If your budget is tight, launch jars first. They need the fewest decisions — one wax, one jar, one wick size — and they tell you which scents sell. Then add pillars in the two scents that sold best, with oil you already have. The pillar line then costs ₹2,434.82 to add, and every rupee of it goes into a scent with proof behind it. The order-of-purchase guide makes the same argument for moulds generally: they come after wax, oil, wick and jar.
Going the other way — pillars first — suits makers whose brand is visual: sculpted, coloured, gift-led candles where the jar would hide the work. The logic is the same, mirrored: one pillar wax, one mould, one wick, then add jars in the scents that proved themselves. What does not work well is buying a full inventory for both on day one. You end up with two half-used wax bags, a drawer of moulds and no clear idea which range is carrying the business.
Whichever you start with, keep the scent list identical across both. It halves the oil you hold and lets every bottle earn from two products. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to sell two full inventories. This page argues for sharing everything that can be shared, buying the second wax in the smallest bag that proves the range, and adding moulds only after the first one has sold.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Mould, sealer, dye, braided wick and tissue prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. Per-gram and per-candle figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.
Statements about container wax in moulds and pillar wax in jars are general candle-making practice, not CSI measurements — test them. The 250 g pillar, the 8% loads, the 5% wax allowance and the 50-pour mould life are working assumptions; mould volumes, dye doses and wick sizes are not published, and the pillar-box figure is a labelled example.
