I Want to Sell Mini Candles at ₹199–₹299 — How Do I Choose Raw Materials That Keep COGS Controlled Without Making the Product Feel Cheap?
शेयर करना
Which raw material saves the most money in a mini? Usually the vessel or the oil, not the wax. Switching to a cheaper tested wax saves about ₹4.48 per 45 g mini; changing jars moves cost by ₹25.96.
Can I use a premium oud in a ₹299 mini? In a 120 g candle the oud alone costs ₹77.79 and materials reach ₹186.91, 62.51% of ₹299. Keep premium oils for higher-priced or smaller candles.
What makes a cheap candle look cheap? Underfilled jars, rough or frosted tops, a mismatched label and a weak scent. Those depend on vessel, process and oil choice more than on the wax price.
Start from your price, not from our catalogue
A mini candle at ₹199 or ₹299 has very little room for waste. Your selling price (your figure) has to cover materials, the box or sleeve, a label, your time, platform or shop fees, shipping where you pay it, GST and a margin. CSI can only help with the first of those. This page works out what the materials cost for four realistic mini builds, then shows which choices change how the product feels and which only change the invoice.
Every figure below excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. Packaging in particular is your own number, because CSI does not sell it; at this price point it can easily rival the cost of the candle inside it, so put a real quote against it before you set a price.
Four mini builds, costed with CSI prices
Each build uses CSI 464 soy wax (₹0.5074 per g from the 10 kg pack: ₹5,074.00 ÷ 10,000 g), a fragrance load of 8% of total weight as a suggested starting point, and an Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90 as the first wick to test. Fill weights are illustrations; weigh your own.
| Build | Materials | % of ₹199 | % of ₹299 | Left from ₹299 for everything else |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A · 70 g votive, Citrus Lemon | ₹86.30 | 43.37% | 28.86% | ₹212.70 |
| B · 45 g mini jar, Lavender | ₹66.95 | 33.64% | 22.39% | ₹232.05 |
| C · 120 g lidded, White Royal Oud | ₹186.91 | 93.92% | 62.51% | ₹112.09 |
| D · 120 g lidded, Eucalyptus Spearmint | ₹138.57 | 69.63% | 46.34% | ₹160.43 |
The percentages are simple division: ₹86.30 ÷ ₹199 = 43.37%, and so on. The column on the right is ₹299 minus the material cost, and it is what remains to pay for the box, label, labour, fees, shipping, GST and profit. Your own target margin decides which builds survive.
Build C is the instructive one. Putting a premium oud in a 120 g candle costs more in fragrance alone (₹77.79) than the whole of Build B. At ₹199 it is not viable, and at ₹299 it leaves only ₹112.09 for everything else. A premium oil belongs in a full-size, higher-priced candle, or in a much smaller mini.
What makes a mini feel cheap, and what does not
Customers do not see your wax invoice. They see the vessel, the fill level, the surface, the label and the box, and they smell the candle before and after lighting. Spend on those, and economise where nobody notices.
| Choice | Customer notices? | Rupee effect in Build B | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jar: mini jar vs 120 g lidded jar | Yes, strongly | ₹47.20 − ₹21.24 = ₹25.96 more | Spend if the price can carry it |
| Oil: Lavender vs Citrus Lemon | Yes, by scent preference | 3.6 g × (₹5.221 − ₹2.832) = ₹8.60 | Choose by appeal, not price alone |
| Wax: CSI 464 vs Eco Soy CSI 400 (5 kg) | Rarely, if both pass testing | 41.4 g × (₹0.5074 − ₹0.3992) = ₹4.48 saved | Test the cheaper wax; switch only if it performs |
| Fill level | Yes, an underfilled jar looks mean | Grams of wax, a few rupees | Fill consistently to a generous line |
| Smooth, clean top | Yes, immediately | Process, not material | Worth the extra care |
The wax line is the honest one. Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹1,996.00 per 5 kg, which is ₹0.3992 per g, against ₹0.5074 for CSI 464, and the saving on a 45 g mini is ₹4.48. That is real money over hundreds of units, but only if CSI 400 gives you the same finish and throw in your jar; CSI publishes no fragrance load for it, so test it at your intended load before switching. Natural Soy Pearl Wax is another lower-cost container option at ₹4,248.00 per 10 kg (₹0.4248 per g), again with no published load. If a cheaper wax looks worse on the top, the saving is false.
A lean specification that still feels considered
For most makers at ₹199, Build B is the starting template: a Mini Glass Jar in Black or Golden, CSI 464 filled to a consistent weighed line, one well-chosen oil at a tested load, and an Eco C1 wick if it passes. At ₹299, the extra headroom can go into the 120 g lidded jar with a mid-priced oil such as Eucalyptus Spearmint (Build D), or into better packaging around Build B. Which one sells better is a question for your customers, not for us.
Remember that the material cost is only the start of the arithmetic. Platform fees, returns and breakages, free samples and the occasional remake all come out of the same gap between price and material cost. If Build B leaves ₹132.05 from ₹199, that figure has to absorb every one of those before any profit appears, which is why the cheapest sound build is the right default at this price.
Avoid three traps. Do not add mica to make a burning mini sparkle; it can clog the wick and belongs in melts and surfaces. Do not push the fragrance load up to compensate for a cheap oil; it can affect the burn and rarely fixes a weak profile. And do not cut the wick test, because a mini that tunnels or soots undoes everything the jar and box achieved.
Two price points, two different products
If you plan to sell at both ₹199 and ₹299, make the difference visible rather than incremental. A customer comparing the two should see a reason for the extra ₹299 − ₹199 = ₹100 at a glance: a larger lidded jar, a different oil family, or a gift-ready presentation. Adding a few grams of wax to the same jar does not create that reason, and it erodes the margin on the product that sells more. Many makers find that a clear small-and-larger pair sells better than two near-identical minis, but that is a hypothesis to test with your own customers, not a rule.
Buy this to test, then buy this once validated
| Item | Pack | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Glass Jars | 5 | ₹129.80 |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 5 | ₹159.30 |
| Shiny glass jar with lid, 120 g | 5 | ₹236.00 |
| CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | 1 kg | ₹399.00 |
| Citrus Lemon + Lavender | 15 g each | ₹81.42 + ₹105.02 |
| Eco C1 wicks | 20 | ₹118.00 |
| Total | ₹1,735.94 |
Check it: ₹129.80 + ₹159.30 + ₹236.00 + ₹507.40 + ₹399.00 + ₹81.42 + ₹105.02 + ₹118.00 = ₹1,735.94. Once one build wins on look, scent and burn, buy that jar in its largest sensible pack (the Mini Glass Jar's cost per piece falls from ₹25.96 in the 5-pack, ₹129.80 ÷ 5, to ₹21.24 in the 100-pack), the winning wax in 5 kg or 10 kg, and the oil in 500 g or 1 kg. Then rerun the cost table above with your own packaging quote before you print a single price tag.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Eco Soy CSI 400: 1 kg ₹399.00, 5 kg ₹1,996.00 — 100% soy container wax in chunks, produced in India · add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir for 2 minutes · no fragrance load published. Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil: 15 g ₹81.42, 50 g ₹170.00, 100 g ₹300.00, 500 g ₹1,420.00, 1 kg ₹2,832.00 — top lemon and lime, middle grapefruit and orange, base mandarin · vanillin ~0% · soy 6–10%, paraffin 6–8% · page tip: citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families; cure the full 48–72 h and use the upper end of the range.
Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
