I Want to Ship Soy Candles to Chennai and Mumbai During Humid Weather — What Storage and Appearance Changes Should I Monitor?
शेयर करना
How do I tell oil from water? Blot with tissue: water dries and leaves nothing; oil leaves a translucent mark that stays. See the tip.
How long should I monitor? 28 days, checked on day 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 — some changes take weeks to show. See the sheet.
What does it cost? ₹6,301.22 in CSI materials for 18 candles across Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy. See the kit.
Watch the surface, the glass and the packaging — and learn to tell oil from water
Humidity changes the question. A hot, dry route asks whether the candle softens or sweats oil. A humid coastal route like Chennai or Mumbai adds water to the picture: moisture can condense on a cool candle when it meets warm, damp air, packaging can absorb it, and labels can lift or cockle. The changes you see may be the candle's own — frosting, a dull top, wet-looking patches where the wax has let go of the glass, oil on the surface — or they may be water sitting on an unchanged candle. Treat the two the same and you will change the wrong thing.
So the answer to "what should I monitor" is a list and a calendar. The list: surface moisture or film, whether that film is oil or water, frosting or bloom, glass contact, the top's finish, the label, box and lid seal, the candle's weight, cold throw, and — at the end — the burn. The calendar: day 0, 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28, because some changes appear the morning after unpacking and others take weeks in a damp room. And every observation is made beside a twin kept dry, because a humid-route candle compared with your memory of a dry one tells you nothing reliable.
The waxes used to show the method are Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy Wax — CSI's soy and virgin coconut oil blend, per its product page. CSI publishes no humidity, frosting or appearance data for either. Chunks' page states a fragrance ceiling of 13%; Premium Coconut Soy's page publishes no ceiling, temperatures or shelf life. The comparison is to show how two different-looking soy-based waxes are judged on the same calendar, not to suggest one handles humidity better.
The changes to monitor on humid routes
The table pairs each change with how it looks, how to tell whether it is oil or water, when it tends to appear, and the general mechanism commonly described for it. These are general candle-making observations — phrased as "can" — not CSI measurements.
| Change | How it looks | Oil or water? | When it tends to show | Commonly described cause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surface moisture or film | Beads, a damp sheen, a cloudy film | Blot: water dries to nothing; oil leaves a translucent mark | On unpacking; after AC-to-humid moves | Condensation on a cool candle, or oil migrating out |
| Oil on the surface | Droplets that do not evaporate | Oil | Days 1–7 in warm humid storage | Warmth loosening the wax's hold on the oil; load |
| Frosting / bloom | White, crystalline patches or haze | Neither — it is wax | Over weeks; after temperature swings | Wax crystals changing form; common in soy |
| Glass wet spots or gaps | Patches that look wet through the glass | Neither — it is an air gap | After warm–cool swings | Wax pulling away from the glass as it contracts |
| Top finish | Dull, pitted or fine cracks | — | Days 7–28 | Repeated surface wetting and drying; crystallisation |
| Label, box, lid | Label lifting or cockling, box softening, lid not sealing | Water | Within days in damp storage | Paper and board absorbing moisture |
| Weight change | Loss over weeks | Usually oil or fragrance leaving | Days 7–28 | Fragrance loss to air or surface |
| Cold throw | Weaker or changed scent unlit | — | Days 14–28 | Fragrance loss or surface change |
Three of these — frosting, glass wet spots and a dull top — are cosmetic and also appear on dry routes; humidity and temperature swings can make them more visible. Testing a wax for minimal frosting and jar adhesion as a buying criterion cover them as wax-selection questions. On a humid route the extra work is separating them from water, and catching the packaging problems that are not about the candle at all.
Three arms: dry control, humid store, AC-to-humid transfer
Each wax gets nine candles: one unscented and two at 8% (16 g of oil + 184 g of wax) in each of three arms. Put a hygrometer-thermometer or logger in each arm (not a CSI item; buy one locally) so you know what conditions the candles actually saw. The arms are labelled examples of how to reproduce coastal conditions at home; adjust them to your logged destinations.
| Arm | How to set it up (example) | Duration | Candles per wax | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D · Dry control | Your AC or dry studio, packed as shipped | 28 days | 1 unscented + 2 at 8% | The reference twin |
| H · Humid store | A non-AC room on a humid route, or a closed tub with a dish of water beside the candles; log the humidity | 28 days | 1 unscented + 2 at 8% | Slow change in damp storage |
| T · Transfer | Candles kept in AC overnight, moved each morning into warm, humid air for the day (unpacked) | 7 transfers, then stored with H | 1 unscented + 2 at 8% | Condensation and swing effects — the customer's unboxing |
| Per wax | 9 | 18 candles for two waxes |
The 28-day monitoring sheet
One sheet per wax, one column per check day. Score each line 0 (no change from D twin) to 3 (clear change), and for any wet surface note "O" for oil or "W" for water from the blot. The pass rule is set before day 0. CSI publishes no flame-height or jar-temperature limit; the burn line is no worse than the D twin, within your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to.

The priced monitoring kit
CSI's load convention: oil = 200 g × load. Each wax needs 1,704 g for nine candles, 1,789.2 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption). The twelve 8% candles need 192 g of Blue Ocean, 201.6 g with the allowance.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 1,789.2 g | 4 × 500 g | ₹1,196.00 |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax | 1,789.2 g | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,840.00 |
| Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil | 201.6 g | 4 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹1,081.22 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 18 + 2 spare | 1 × 20-pack | ₹118.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 18 jars | 4 × 5-pack | ₹1,416.00 |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper (blot test) | 1 sheet per candle per check | 1 × 100 sheets | ₹650.00 |
| Kit total (hygrometer-loggers not included) | ₹6,301.22 |
Blue Ocean is one of the oils where the 50 g bottle is fractionally cheaper per gram than the 100 g (₹4.94 against ₹4.95), so the oil line is built from 50 g bottles. Chunks are cheapest as 500 g bags. Premium Coconut Soy is sold only in 500 g and 1 kg, at the same ₹920.00 a kilo either way.

What each wax costs per candle on a coastal range
At production packs (Chunks 5 kg, Premium Coconut Soy 1 kg — its largest listed size — Blue Ocean 1 kg, ₹5.90 wick, ₹70.80 jar; labour, packaging, freight and GST excluded) a 200 g candle at 8% costs ₹266.21 in Chunks (₹110.22 of wax) and ₹325.28 in Premium Coconut Soy (₹169.28 of wax). Blue Ocean adds ₹79.30 in either.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chunks (if it passes) | 38,640 g | 7 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg | ₹23,361.00 |
| Premium Coconut Soy (if it passes) | 38,640 g | 39 × 1 kg | ₹35,880.00 |
| Blue Ocean (either) | 3,360 g | 67 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹16,642.22 |
| Difference in candle material per month | ₹11,812.80 |
The ₹59.06 per-candle difference is ₹11,812.80 a month at an example 200 candles. If the humid store shows the two waxes behaving the same, that difference buys you a look and a label story, not humidity performance — and you should decide on whether your customers pay for that look. If one wax shows clearly fewer cosmetic changes on your calendar, putting a financial value on fewer cosmetic rejects shows how to weigh the difference.
The decision rule
| Result | Meaning | Action and purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Wet surfaces blot as water; candles otherwise unchanged | Condensation, not the candle | Packing (inner wrap), a "let it reach room temperature before unwrapping" note; no wax change |
| Labels or boxes fail; candles fine | Packaging, not the candle | Moisture-resistant labels and inner bags (not CSI items); no wax change |
| 8% candles blot as oil, unscented do not | Load or wax–oil pairing in warm damp storage | Load ladder before changing wax |
| One wax shows more frosting, gaps or top change on the calendar | Cosmetic difference between waxes in your conditions | Choose the steadier wax if the cost difference is worth it; month's order above |
| Both waxes change similarly | Conditions, not the wax | Customer care note; summer vs indoor use; no wax change |
| Any burn worse than D twin | Not approved | Investigate before shipping that formula to humid routes |
Humidity rarely travels alone: coastal routes in summer are often warm as well. If your sheet shows oil rather than water, run the wax × load × heat grid next; if the candles look different only after delivery, the delivery-realism test follows them all the way to the customer. Buying Diwali wax through the monsoon covers storing the raw wax itself in damp months.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Humid routes produce problems that look like wax faults and often are not — condensation and packaging most of all. We publish no humidity, frosting or appearance data for any of our waxes, so this page is built to separate packaging problems (no wax purchase) from candle problems.
Every wax price is CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026; Blue Ocean prices are from the 24 September 2026 pull; wick, jar and tissue prices are as verified on 10 September and 24–25 September 2026. Candle splits, per-candle and monthly costs and pack rounding are arithmetic, shown to two decimals. Product-page statements are attributed to CSI's product pages.
The three arms, the humid-tub set-up, the 28-day calendar, candle counts, scoring scales, the 200-candle month and the 5% pour loss are labelled working practices and examples.
