I Want to Spend the Smallest Amount Necessary to Validate a Candle Idea Before Investing ₹1 Lakh — What Raw Materials Should I Buy for the Pilot Stage?
शेयर करना
Why tins? The 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin is CSI's container with a published fill, at ₹30.00 a tin, and it cannot break. If your idea is a jar candle, pilot in the jar instead.
What should I not buy yet? 10 kg bags, 1 kg oils, 100-packs and a melter. That order would be about ₹25,711.00 and answer nothing until it is poured.
When do I spend the ₹1 lakh? When Stage 1 passes gates you set in advance — for example most tins sold at full price, repeat asks, no burn complaints.
A pilot answers two questions, not one
Most first spends try to answer both questions at once — they buy production quantities and hope the candles burn well and sell. That is the expensive way to learn either answer. A pilot splits them. Stage 0 answers "does the candle work?": a wick ladder and one or two candles per scent, burned and scored at the bench. Stage 1 answers "will people pay?": a small run of finished candles, put in front of real buyers at your intended price. Only when both answers are yes does the ₹1 lakh go in — and then it goes into the scents and format that passed.
| Stage | Candles | CSI spend | Question answered | Pass looks like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 · Bench | 10 test tins | ₹2,280.52 (incl. tools) | Does it burn safely and smell right? | A wick with a full, clean pool; each oil confirmed |
| 1 · Market | 24 tins to sell | ₹2,903.16 | Will people pay your price? | Example: 18 of 24 sold, repeat asks, few returns |
| Pilot | 34 | ₹5,183.68 | 5.2% of ₹1 lakh | Both stages passed |
| Contrast: buy everything first | ≈ 100 tins | ₹25,711.00 | Neither, until it is too late to change | — |
The contrast row is not a straw man; it is what a typical "₹1 lakh plan, first instalment" looks like for this idea — a 10 kg bag, a kilo of each oil, a hundred-odd tins, wick 100-packs and a melter. It costs ₹25,711.00 and answers neither question until the candles are poured. The pilot costs ₹5,183.68 and answers both. The ₹1 lakh dead-stock post shows what happens to bulk bought before either answer is known.
Why the pilot uses 85 g tins
The smallest honest pilot needs a container whose fill you do not have to guess. CSI does not publish fill weights for its glass jars (only the 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin and the 50 g Heart Cutout Velvet Jar have published fills). The Golden Aluminium Tin has a published 85 g fill, costs ₹30.00 a tin in packs of 12, is not glass (no breakage line), and uses only 78.2 g of wax and 6.8 g of oil at 8%. A 15 g bottle scents two tins with allowances; a 50 g scents six. That is what keeps Stage 0 small.
| 85 g tin pilot | 200 g White Matte pilot | |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 0 materials | ₹1,572.52 | ₹3,590.04 |
| Stage 1 materials | ₹2,903.16 | ₹6,363.92 |
| Scale + thermometer | ₹708.00 | ₹708.00 |
| Pilot total | ₹5,183.68 | ₹10,661.96 |
| Fill | 85 g — published | weigh a test pour first |
| Breakage allowance | none (aluminium) | 2% example |
If your idea is a 200 g jar candle, pilot in the jar — a tin answers the market question for a tin, not for a jar at three times the price. The jar pilot costs ₹10,661.96, still 10.7% of ₹1 lakh. What matters is that the pilot uses the same container, wax and price point as the business you intend to build.
Stage 0: the bench kit
Ten tins: a six-tin wick ladder in Eucalyptus Spearmint (three Eco Thin C1, three Eco Thick C2) and two confirmation tins each in Roasted Coconut and Autumn. CSI publishes no wick sizes per container, so the ladder is not optional — it is the cheapest part of the pilot and the one that prevents the most expensive mistake. The oils are bought at the smallest sizes that cover the grams: Eucalyptus Spearmint has CSI's cheapest 15 g (₹68.44).
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 856 g | 1 × 1 kg | ₹507.40 |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | 6 tins · 44.7 g | 3 × 15 g | ₹205.32 |
| Roasted Coconut | 2 tins · 14.9 g | 1 × 15 g | ₹93.00 |
| Autumn | 2 tins · 14.9 g | 1 × 15 g | ₹94.40 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g | 10 tins | 1 × 12 | ₹360.00 |
| Eco Thin C1 × 20 + Thick C2 × 10 | 3 + 3 ladder wicks + spares | 20 + 10 | ₹212.40 |
| Wick stickers | 1 sheet | 40 | ₹100.00 |
| Materials | ₹1,572.52 | ||
| Weighing scale + pen thermometer | skip if owned | 1 + 1 | ₹708.00 |
| Stage 0 total | ₹2,280.52 |
Stage 1: the market batch
Eight tins per scent, 24 in all, poured with the wick that passed. Stage 0's leftovers are used first — 144 g of wax and 2 spare tins — so Stage 1 buys only the difference. Every line is rounded to CSI's smallest in-stock packs.
| Item | Need | Buy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1,911 g after 144 g left from Stage 0 | 2 × 1 kg | ₹1,014.80 |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | 8 tins · 59.6 g | 4 × 15 g | ₹273.76 |
| Roasted Coconut | 8 tins · 59.6 g | 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹340.00 |
| Autumn | 8 tins · 59.6 g | 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g | ₹365.80 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin, 85 g | 22 after 2 spare | 2 × pack of 12 | ₹720.00 |
| Production wicks (winning type) | 26 less ladder spares | Thin 1 × 20 or Thick 1 × 20 | ₹188.80 |
| Wick stickers | 26 less 29 left | none needed | ₹0.00 |
| Stage 1 total | ₹2,903.16 |
Stage 1's material cost is ₹120.96 per saleable tin. That is higher than a production tin will cost — small bottles carry the 15 g premium and part-used packs — and that is fine: you are paying for an answer. Excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.
| Signal | Example threshold (yours) | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Sell-through at full price | 18 of 24 within your selling window | Change the price, scent or channel and rerun Stage 1 |
| Per-scent result | Each scent sells at least half its tins | Drop or replace the scent before scaling |
| Unprompted repeat asks | At least a few buyers ask for more | The candle may be a one-off gift, not a repeat product |
| Returns and complaints | None about burn or safety | Back to Stage 0 — never scale a burn problem |
| Your reject rate | Close to the 5% planning figure | Fix the process before buying bulk |
After the gate: where the ₹1 lakh goes
A passed pilot changes the ₹1 lakh plan in three ways. The scents are no longer guesses — buy depth in the ones that sold. The format is proven — buy its containers in their cheapest pack. And the wick is approved — buy it in production packs without another ladder. What stays small is anything new: a fourth scent or a second size goes through its own mini Stage 0 first. What to buy in bulk and what in testing quantities draws the same line for a first 100 candles, and the ₹25,000 bulk-or-small question applies it to a first inventory budget.
| Material | Pilot pack | Production pack | Per-unit change |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 | 1 kg · ₹507.40 | 10 kg · ₹5,074.00 | none — flat ₹507.40 / kg |
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | 15 g · ₹68.44 | 1 kg · ₹3,068.00 | ₹4.56 → ₹3.07 a gram |
| Roasted Coconut | 15 g · ₹93.00 | 1 kg · ₹3,999.00 | ₹6.20 → ₹4.00 a gram |
| Autumn | 15 g · ₹94.40 | 1 kg · ₹5,428.00 | ₹6.29 → ₹5.43 a gram |
| Golden tin | 12 · ₹360.00 | 12 · ₹360.00 (only pack listed) | none |
| Eco Thin C1 | 20 · ₹118.00 | 1,000 · ₹5,900.00 | none — flat ₹5.90 |
Notice how little of that is a price break. CSI 464, the tin and the Eco wicks are flat per unit at every listed size; the oils step down from 15 g to the larger sizes, and only some of them step again at 500 g or 1 kg. So the pilot's small packs cost you very little extra per candle — the main premium is the 15 g bottle. When to move from small packs to bulk works out the exact switching points, and the staged ₹10,000 → ₹1 lakh plan turns the gate above into four funded stages.
