A bestseller is bought from its sales history. A new scent has no history, so buying it like a bestseller means guessing with cash. This page sizes the first order of an unproven scent from a launch batch you can actually sell, then shows exactly when it graduates to kilo buying.
450 g
oil per new scent for a 26-candle launch batch (200 g candles, 8% load, 3% loss) · against 2,000 g a month for a 120-a-month bestseller · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil should I buy for a new scent? Enough for one launch batch you can sell in about a month, not a month of bestseller demand. In our worked example that is 24 saleable candles plus 2 retained, 416 g of oil at 16 g each, 428.48 g with a 3% loss allowance, bought as 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g = 450 g.

How does that compare with a bestseller? A bestseller selling 120 candles a month uses 1,920 g of oil, 1,977.6 g with loss, so it gets 2 × 1 kg of Lavender (₹10,442.00). A new scent's launch buy is under a quarter of that.

What do three launches cost? Testers first: three 15 g bottles for ₹341.22. Launch batches: ₹8,380.40 for 450 g each of Pumpkin Spice, Raat Ki Rani and Bergamot Amber, against ₹17,521.00 if you bought a kilo of each.

When does a new scent get bestseller-style buying? When it passes a sell-through gate. We use 18 of 24 launch candles sold within 30 days (75%) as a working rule. Then buy 30 days of its observed rate, like any proven scent. See graduating a scent.
The short answer
Launch buy: 26 candles × 16 g = 416 g + 3% = 428.48 g → 450 g per new scent (4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g).
Bestseller buy: 120 candles × 16 g = 1,920 g + 3% = 1,977.6 g → 2 × 1 kg of Lavender, ₹10,442.00.
Cash at risk: Staged launch ₹8,380.40 for three scents · three kilos ₹17,521.00 · difference ₹9,140.60, most of it unpoured oil if a scent stalls.

Three buying stages — how much oil each new scent earns before it is bought like a bestseller 15 g Stage 1 · test 15 g tester ₹341.22 for all three 450 g Stage 2 · launch batch 450 g per scent ₹8,380.40 for all three 1,400 g Stage 3 · proven (80/month) 1 kg + 4 × 100 g ₹7,670.00 a month 2,000 g Bestseller · Lavender 2 × 1 kg ₹10,442.00 a month Bar height is compressed so the tester stays visible. A new scent moves right only after it passes a sell-through gate.
Stage 1 and 2 quantities are the worked example on this page (three new scents, 200 g candles at 8%). Stage 3 is sized from the scent's own observed sales, here 80 a month. The bestseller bar is Lavender at 120 candles a month, bought as 2 × 1 kg. Rupee figures are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026.
Straight answer
I'm launching three new fragrances but don't know their demand yet — how much fragrance oil should I buy compared with my bestsellers?
Buy a new scent against a launch batch, not against a guess at monthly demand. A bestseller has sales history, so you buy it from that: 120 candles a month × 16 g = 1,920 g of oil, 1,977.6 g with a 3% loss allowance, which is 2 × 1 kg of Lavender for ₹10,442.00. A new scent has no history, so its first buy is sized to a batch small enough to sell in about a month and large enough to judge: in our example 24 saleable candles plus 2 retained, 416 g of oil, 428.48 g after loss, bought as 450 g (4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g). Before that, test each oil from a 15 g bottle. For Pumpkin Spice, Raat Ki Rani and Bergamot Amber the testers cost ₹341.22 and the launch oil ₹8,380.40. Three kilos would cost ₹17,521.00. A scent then earns bestseller-style buying only after it passes a sell-through gate — we use 18 of 24 sold within 30 days — and from then on you buy 30 days of its observed rate. Reorder triggers for a proven scent and fast and slow scents take over from there.
One line: size a new scent's first order to a batch you can sell, not to the sales you hope for.
Start every launch with a tester. The three oils in this page's example all sell a 15 g: Pumpkin Spice ₹106.20, Raat Ki Rani ₹130.00 and Bergamot Amber ₹105.02, ₹341.22 together. Each 15 g scents three 50 g test pots at 8% (4 g each) with 3 g to spare.

Bestseller buying versus launch buying

A bestseller's order comes from the past. A new scent's order has to come from a decision, and the decision is how much you are willing to find out with.

Take a small candle business selling about 400 candles a month of one 200 g container candle at an 8% fragrance load. Every candle holds 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Five scents are established. Lavender is the bestseller at 120 a month and the other four sell 60 to 90. These are example figures for the worked maths — replace them with your own sales. For established scents the buying rule is simple: monthly units × 16 g, plus a 3% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption), rounded up to real CSI packs.

Example portfolio · 200 g candles at 8% · 3% loss allowance · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Thirty days of oil for five established scents
Scent Candles a month Oil at 16 g With 3% loss Cheapest practical packs Cost
Lavender 120 1,920 g 1,977.6 g 2 × 1 kg ₹10,442.00
Cinnamon Vanilla 90 1,440 g 1,483.2 g 1 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g ₹6,855.80
Orchard Pear 70 1,120 g 1,153.6 g 1 × 1 kg + 2 × 100 g ₹4,498.00
Neroli 60 960 g 988.8 g 1 × 1 kg ₹6,655.20
Saffron Cedarwood 60 960 g 988.8 g 2 × 500 g ₹5,168.40
Total 400 6,400 g 6,592.0 g — ₹33,619.40

Now add three new scents. The tempting move is to treat each like an average established scent, 80 candles a month, and buy 1,318.4 g of oil each. That is a guess dressed as a calculation. The 80 comes from other scents' customers, not from this scent's. Some launches outsell the bestseller; many settle well below the average; a few barely move. Until you have sales, the number that matters is not expected demand but how much stock you are prepared to hold while you find out.

So new scents get a different quantity rule. You buy enough to make a launch batch — a fixed, small run that goes on sale, gets watched for a month, and then decides the next order. It sets a ceiling on cash at risk and it produces data. The rest of this page sizes that batch, prices it, and sets the gate a scent must pass before it is bought like Lavender.

The mistake: buying three kilos because the kilo is the "business" size. A 1 kg of each new oil is ₹17,521.00, enough for 62 candles per scent. If one scent sells eight candles in its first month, you are holding more than half a kilo of it in a bottle, and nothing in the sales data told you to buy it. The fix: size the first buy from the launch batch below, and let the scent's own sell-through set the second buy.

The three buying stages

Each new scent passes through three stages, and the purchase at each stage is sized to that stage's job. The diagram above shows how much oil each stage buys. Here is what each is for:

1
Stage 1 — Test from a 15 g testerBuy the smallest listed size. For 51 oils that is 15 g, which scents three 50 g test pots at 8% (4 g each, 12 g in all) or one 180–200 g candle. The job is to find out whether the oil works in your wax, with your wick, at your load, before any customer sees it. CSI does not sell a fragrance sample pack or discovery set; you build your own from the 15 g and 50 g sizes. If an oil starts at 50 g, that is its tester.
2
Stage 2 — Launch batch from 100 g and 50 g packsA scent that passes the test gets one launch batch: 24 candles to sell plus 2 retained for burn checks and photographs. At 16 g each that is 416 g of oil, 428.48 g with a 3% loss allowance. Buy it as 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g = 450 g. The 50 g and 100 g are the smallest sizes that normally escape the 15 g price premium.
3
Stage 3 — Demand-based buying once the scent passes a gateAfter 30 days on sale, count sell-through. If at least 18 of the 24 launch candles sold (75%, our working rule), the scent graduates. From then on buy 30 days of its observed sales rate, exactly as you do for Lavender. If it misses the gate, either run a second launch batch from what is left, or retire it.
4
Keep the bestsellers on their own ruleNone of this changes how you buy proven scents. Lavender at 120 a month still gets 2 × 1 kg a month. The staged rule only protects cash on scents you know nothing about yet. I Want to Keep 30 Days of Candle Raw-Material Inventory — How Do I Convert Monthly Unit Sales into Kilograms of Wax and Fragrance Stock? converts a whole portfolio into 30 days of kilograms.
The CSI principle
Buy a new scent to learn, then buy it to sell.
The first two purchases are research: a 15 g test and a batch-sized launch. Only the third purchase is a production purchase, and by then the scent has told you its own sales rate. Treating research as production is how bottles of unproven oil end up on shelves for months.

Sizing the launch batch

A launch batch has to be small enough to sell and large enough to judge. Twenty-four candles is not a law; it is a number you can defend.

Why 24? It is a size a small seller can plausibly clear in a month alongside the core range, and it is large enough that the result means something — selling 18 of 24 tells you more than selling 3 of 4. Pick your own number from two limits: the most you would be comfortable holding unsold for three months, and the fewest sales that would convince you. Then run the same arithmetic. Here it is for our three new scents, all priced at CSI's live listings:

Launch batch · 24 saleable + 2 retained candles · 200 g at 8% · 3% loss · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Oil for one launch batch, per new scent
New scent Oil needed With 3% loss Buy Cost Oil per candle at this pack
Pumpkin Spice 416 g 428.48 g 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g ₹2,690.40 ₹95.66
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) 416 g 428.48 g 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g ₹3,170.00 ₹112.71
Bergamot Amber 416 g 428.48 g 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g ₹2,520.00 ₹89.60
Three launches 1,248 g 1,285.44 g 1,350 g ₹8,380.40 —

The order of operations matters. First net need: 26 candles × 16 g = 416 g. Then the allowance: × 1.03 = 428.48 g. Only then round up to packs. 4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g gives 450 g, a 21.52 g cushion. A single 500 g would also work; for these three oils it costs the same or slightly less per gram than the 100 g, but the extra 50 g adds to the bill, so choose on total cost and handling. For Pumpkin Spice, 500 g is ₹2,950.00 against ₹2,690.40 for 450 g in smaller packs.

Retained candles are part of the batch, not extra
The 2 retained candles are for a burn check at the end of the cure and for photographs. Count them in the oil calculation from the start. A launch batch that uses every gram on saleable candles leaves you with nothing to check when a customer reports a problem in week three. I Want to Know Exactly How Much Candle Raw Material to Purchase Every Month Without Constantly Running Out or Overbuying — How Do I Build a Procurement Model Using Sales, Formula Consumption, Lead Time, Wastage and Safety Stock? builds the same allowance into the full procurement model.

Why not buy the launch oil as 1 kg to get a lower rate? For most oils there is no lower rate. For two of our three it is only a sliver: Bergamot Amber's kilo is ₹5.44 a gram against ₹5.60 at 100 g, and Raat Ki Rani's is ₹6.77 against ₹7.00. Pumpkin Spice is one of the 24 oils where the kilo really is cheaper, by 10.0% a gram. But 450 g at the kilo rate would cost ₹2,389.50 — you still pay ₹5,310.00 for the bottle and hold 550 g you have no sales reason to own.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell more if you launch with kilos. On our own prices the launch is where the kilo makes the least sense. The staged buy costs ₹8,380.40 for three scents; three kilos cost ₹17,521.00. The ₹9,140.60 difference buys you no information and, if a scent stalls, it sits in a bottle. Buy the kilo for a scent that has shown you a sales rate — then it is a stock-security decision, and a good one.

Graduating a scent to demand-based buying

Thirty days after the launch batch goes on sale, count what sold. The gate we use in this example is 18 of 24, 75% sell-through. It is a working decision rule, not an industry standard; set yours from your margin and how patient your cash can be. A scent that clears the gate has now produced the one number the bestseller rule needs: its own monthly rate. Its next order is 30 days of that rate plus the 3% allowance, rounded to packs.

Pumpkin Spice as the example · 16 g per candle · 3% loss · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
The second order, by observed monthly sales
Observed sales a month Oil a month With 3% loss Cheapest practical packs Cost Months the buy covers
10 160 g 164.8 g 2 × 100 g ₹1,180.00 1.21 months
20 320 g 329.6 g 3 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g ₹2,100.40 1.06 months
40 640 g 659.2 g 1 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g ₹4,130.00 1.06 months
80 1,280 g 1,318.4 g 1 × 1 kg + 4 × 100 g ₹7,670.00 1.06 months

Two readings of that table. At 10 or 20 a month the scent stays a 100 g scent: the 1 kg would be 3.1 months of stock at 20 a month and 6.2 months at 10. At 40 a month the 500 g joins the order. Only around 80 a month — roughly the portfolio average in our example — does the kilo become the natural core of a monthly buy. That is also the point at which the kilo's 10.0% saving on Pumpkin Spice actually lands on your costs, because you are using the oil fast enough for it to matter.

What if a scent misses the gate? Look at the pattern, not only the total. Twelve sales in the last ten days of the month is a scent that is starting to move; twelve in the first week and none after is a scent that sold to your regulars and stopped. For the first, run a second launch batch from what is left of the 450 g (21.52 g spare plus any unpoured candles' worth). For the second, stop. Growth that may not last covers the same judgement for the whole range.

A scent's first sale is a data point. Its thirtieth sale is a purchasing plan.

Where the launch sits in the calendar
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. A launch batch poured in early October, with a cure of one to two weeks (a working checkpoint, not a CSI specification), is on sale by mid-October and gives you about three weeks of festive sell-through before the peak. That is enough to decide whether a new festive scent joins the Diwali order. I'm Entering Diwali with Average Sales of 100 Candles a Week but Expect Demand to Triple — How Much Wax and Fragrance Should I Secure Beforehand? and I'm Planning Production for the Next Three Months — How Do I Convert My Candle Sales Forecast into a Purchasing Plan for Wax, Fragrance Oils, Wicks and Jars? cover festive and three-month purchasing plans.

Wax, wicks and jars for a launch

Oil is scent-specific. Wax, wicks and jars are not, and that changes how a launch affects them.

Three launch batches are 78 candles. If you pour them on top of your normal month, they need 14,352 g of wax (184 g each), 14,782.56 g with 3% loss — 3 × 5 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹8,985.00 (three 5 kg bags cost ₹9.00 less than a 10 kg plus a 5 kg). They need 78 wicks plus test wicks, and 78 jars. Those figures are real. What is not real is assuming the three scents add 78 candles to your monthly wax demand for ever.

New scents partly take sales from old ones. A customer who buys Pumpkin Spice in October may be a customer who would otherwise have bought Cinnamon Vanilla. So after the launch, keep buying wax, wicks and jars from your total candle sales, not from the sum of per-scent guesses. If total sales rise, the extra wax follows automatically; if they do not, the new scents have redistributed demand and your wax order should not change. I Have 30 Kg of Soy Wax in Stock and Average 180 g Finished Candles — Approximately How Many Customer Orders Can My Current Wax Inventory Support? converts a wax stock into candles and orders.

The White Matte jar's fill weight is not published, so the 200 g figure is a fill you should confirm with a weighed test pour in your own jar. Wick size for this jar is also not published; the 9 test wicks cover a three-candle wick test per scent. Wick choice does not change with the scent in principle, but a new oil can burn differently, which is why the test stage comes first. I Want to Maintain Two Weeks of Safety Stock for My Candle Business — How Do I Calculate the Minimum Quantity of Wax, Fragrance, Wicks and Jars I Should Never Fall Below? sets minimum stock for wicks and jars across the whole range.

Cash at risk, in rupees

The case for staging is clearest in the worst case: all three scents stall. With the staged buy you have spent ₹341.22 on testers and ₹8,380.40 on launch oil, and the oil is almost all inside candles you can still sell slowly or bundle. With three kilos you have spent ₹17,521.00, and after pouring the same 26-candle batches you still hold 571.52 g of each oil unpoured.

Worst case · three kilos bought, only the launch batch poured · valued at the 1 kg price
Oil left in the bottle if a launch stalls
Scent 1 kg price Unpoured oil Value sitting in the bottle
Pumpkin Spice ₹5,310.00 571.52 g ₹3,034.77
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) ₹6,774.00 571.52 g ₹3,871.48
Bergamot Amber ₹5,437.00 571.52 g ₹3,107.35
Total ₹17,521.00 1,714.56 g ₹10,013.60

That ₹10,013.60 is the true price of skipping the launch stage. It is not lost — the oil can be poured later — but it is cash you cannot put into Lavender, which has proven demand. The staged route caps the same risk at the price of a few bottles.

The mistake at the other end: under-buying a scent that works. A launch that sells out in ten days has told you something valuable, and buying another 450 g at that point wastes the signal. If a scent clears the gate early, its observed rate is higher than 24 a month — use the real rate (sales ÷ days on sale × 30) for the second order, not the batch size. Then move it onto the reorder rules in My Bestseller Sells 300 Units a Month and Uses 16 g of Fragrance per Candle — How Many Kilograms of Fragrance Should Trigger My Reorder? and My Fragrance Supplier Takes Two Weeks to Deliver — How Do I Calculate Reorder Points Separately for Fast- and Slow-Selling Candle Fragrances?.

A final check on timing. A launch batch tells you most in its first two weeks: if nothing has sold in fourteen days, the gate will almost certainly be missed. Use that as an early warning to adjust photographs, pricing or placement, not to buy more oil. And keep one retained candle from every launch batch for at least the life of the batch on sale, so any customer question can be answered from the same pour. I'm Producing 5,000 Candles a Month — How Do I Calculate Monthly Raw-Material Consumption and Set Automatic Reorder Levels for Every Major Component? shows how the same stage logic turns into automatic reorder levels once a range reaches thousands of candles a month.

The quantities on this page scale directly. A 150 g candle at 8% holds 12 g of oil, so the same 26-candle launch needs 312 g, 321.36 g with loss, which rounds to 4 × 100 g. A 100 g candle holds 8 g, and the launch fits in 3 × 100 g with room to spare. Change the candle size and load first, then run the same four steps: net need, allowance, round to packs, price.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The easy advice for us would be to launch every new scent with a kilo. Our own prices and your cash say otherwise for an unproven scent, so this page recommends the 15 g tester and a launch-sized buy first, and says where the kilo becomes the right buy.

Every oil and wax price here comes from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco Candle Wick prices are from the 25 September 2026 pull and the White Matte Glass Jar price was verified on 10 September 2026 for Blog 760. Per-gram, per-candle and batch totals are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The portfolio sales, the 24-candle launch batch, the 3% loss allowance and the 75% sell-through gate are labelled working assumptions for the worked example, not CSI data or industry standards. CSI publishes no sales figures for any oil. For launch planning, bulk quotes, GST invoicing, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Size it to a launch batch you can sell in about a month. For 24 saleable + 2 retained 200 g candles at 8% that is 416 g of oil, 428.48 g with 3% loss, bought as 450 g (4 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g). Test the oil first from a 15 g bottle.
Should I buy 1 kg of a new fragrance oil to save money?
Usually not. For most CSI oils the 1 kg costs about the same per gram as the 100 g. Even for oils with a real kilo saving, such as Pumpkin Spice at 10.0%, a kilo of an unproven scent ties up cash in oil you have no sales reason to own. Buy the kilo once the scent's observed sales use it within a month or two.
How many candles should a new scent launch batch be?
Pick the most you would be comfortable holding unsold for three months and the fewest sales that would convince you. Our worked example uses 24 saleable candles plus 2 retained, judged against a 18-of-24 (75%) sell-through gate after 30 days. Those are working rules — set your own.
How do I know when a new fragrance is a bestseller?
When it has a sales rate of its own. After 30 days on sale, compare sell-through with your gate, and if it passes, buy 30 days of its observed rate plus a loss allowance, exactly as for established scents. CSI does not publish sales figures for any oil, so the only reliable signal is your own data.
Does CSI sell a fragrance sample pack for testing new scents?
No. CSI does not list a fragrance sample pack, trial pack or discovery set. Build your own from the 15 g sizes (51 oils) or the 50 g where an oil starts there. Ask on WhatsApp if you want help choosing.
Do new scents increase how much wax I should buy?
Only for the launch batches themselves (14,352 g of wax for 78 candles in our example). After that, buy wax from total candle sales. New scents often take sales from existing ones, so adding their guessed demand on top of the old total over-buys wax.

Non-price figures and assumptions: 200 g container candle at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax, load as a share of finished weight). 3% pour-loss allowance, a 24 + 2-candle launch batch, a 75% sell-through gate and the five-scent example portfolio (400 candles a month) are labelled working assumptions. Cure time of one to two weeks is a working checkpoint, not a CSI specification. White Matte Glass Jar fill weight and wick size are not published — confirm by weighed test pour and burn test.
