I'm Making a 200 g Soy Candle — How Do I Calculate the True Cost per Candle Including Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick, Jar, Lid, Label and Packaging?
शेयर करना
How do I split 200 g into wax and fragrance? Load is a share of the finished weight. At 8%, oil = 200 × 0.08 = 16 g and wax = 200 − 16 = 184 g. Do not add 8% on top of 200 g of wax; that makes a 216 g candle and a different cost.
Which lines can CSI price and which can't it? CSI lists wax, oil, wick, wick sticker, jar and tissue paper — ₹276.35 of this sheet. Lid, label and box are not in CSI's price list for this jar, so they appear as example figures (₹55.00) that you must replace with your own printer's and box maker's quotes.
What margin does that leave? At an example ₹799 selling price, gross margin on price is 57.6% and markup on cost is 135.7%. At ₹499 it drops to 32.1% margin. Margin and markup explains which is which.
The ten-line cost sheet
Most first costings stop at the four materials a recipe card names: wax, fragrance, wick and jar. Those four are the heaviest, so the total looks nearly right, and that is the trap. The candle a customer receives also has a wick sticker holding the wick to the jar floor, a lid, one or two labels, some kind of wrap and usually a box. Each one is small. Together they are routinely the difference between the margin you planned and the margin you get. Here is the full sheet for one 200 g soy candle, priced from CSI's live listings where CSI sells the item, and with clearly marked example figures where it does not.
| # | Line | What you use | Unit price | Cost per candle | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wax | 184 g Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 / kg | ₹110.22 | CSI listed |
| 2 | Fragrance oil | 16 g Sandalwood | ₹502.68 / 100 g | ₹80.43 | CSI listed |
| 3 | Wick | 1 Eco Candle Wick, Thin C1 | ₹59.00 / 10 | ₹5.90 | CSI listed |
| 4 | Wick sticker | 1 sticker | ₹100.00 / 40 | ₹2.50 | CSI listed |
| 5 | Container | 1 White Matte Glass Jar | ₹354.00 / 5 | ₹70.80 | CSI listed |
| 6 | Lid | 1 lid to fit the jar | example | ₹15.00 | Example — replace with your quote |
| 7 | Labels | front label + safety label | example | ₹10.00 | Example — replace with your printer's quote |
| 8 | Wrap | 1 sheet tissue paper, 50 × 75 cm | ₹650.00 / 100 | ₹6.50 | CSI listed |
| 9 | Outer box | 1 printed or kraft box | example | ₹30.00 | Example — replace with your box maker's quote |
| 10 | Wastage | 4% of wax + oil | working assumption | ₹7.63 | Assumption — use your own records |
| True cost | ₹338.98 | before labour, freight, GST |
Three things are worth noticing. First, the four recipe-card lines come to ₹267.35, which is 78.9% of the true cost. The other six lines add ₹71.63. Second, the jar alone (₹70.80) costs almost as much as the fragrance (₹80.43); container choice is a margin decision, not only a look decision. Third, three lines on this sheet — lid, labels and box — are numbers we cannot give you, because CSI does not list them for this jar. They are shown as examples so the sheet adds up, and they are the first thing you should replace.
Getting the grams right first
Every rupee on the sheet depends on two gram figures: how much oil and how much wax are in the candle. Get those wrong and every later line is wrong in proportion. The convention used across this cluster, and by most candle makers, is that fragrance load is a percentage of the finished candle weight, not of the wax.
| Load | Oil | Wax | Oil cost | Wax cost | True cost (same other lines) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6% | 12 g | 188 g | ₹60.32 | ₹112.61 | ₹320.55 |
| 8% | 16 g | 184 g | ₹80.43 | ₹110.22 | ₹338.98 |
| 10% | 20 g | 180 g | ₹100.54 | ₹107.82 | ₹357.39 |
Moving from 8% to 10% adds 4 g of oil and removes 4 g of wax, so the true cost rises by ₹18.41, not by the full price of 4 g of oil. That offset is small with a mid-priced oil and matters more with a cheap one. The full batch maths of that step — across 100, 500 and 1,000 candles — is in the 8% to 10% load post. Whether dropping load is a real saving or a false one is in the load-reduction post.
It also helps to turn the gram figures into pack yields, because that is how you will actually buy. One kilo of wax pours 5.43 candles at 184 g, so a 1 kg pack of Chunks covers five candles with a little over; a 5 kg pack covers 27. One 100 g bottle of oil at 16 g a candle scents 6.25 candles. Those two yields decide how often you reorder each line, which the wastage and leftover post develops further.
Pricing each line
Some items are deliberately not on the sheet. The wick centering device, pouring jug, thermometer and scale are equipment: they last for many batches, so they belong in overheads or in a per-batch allowance, not in the per-candle materials. Labour, electricity, courier and payment fees are real costs too, but they vary with how you sell rather than with the candle. The ₹150 candle post and the what-to-include post cover those.
What moves the total
With the sheet built, you can test changes one line at a time. Fragrance choice is the biggest single lever. The table keeps everything else fixed — Chunks, the same wick, sticker, jar, tissue and example lid, label and box, and a 4% wastage allowance — and changes only the oil, priced at its 1 kg rate:
| Oil (1 kg price) | ₹/g | Oil per candle | True cost | Oil's share of true cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Strawberries (₹3,540.00) | ₹3.54 | ₹56.64 | ₹314.23 | 18.0% |
| Sandalwood (₹5,026.80) | ₹5.03 | ₹80.43 | ₹338.98 | 23.7% |
| Santal Noir (₹9,120.00) | ₹9.12 | ₹145.92 | ₹407.09 | 35.8% |
The spread between the first and last row is ₹92.86 a candle, and it comes entirely from 16 g of oil. That is why the oil line deserves its own decision, made against the selling price the candle is aimed at, rather than a default. Note, too, that Sandalwood costs the same per gram at 100 g and at 1 kg, so the kilo buys stock security, not a lower rate. Fresh Strawberries is one of the few oils where the kilo is cheaper — ₹60.42 of oil per candle from the 100 g against ₹56.64 from the kilo.
| Wax | Price basis | 184 g costs | True cost | Load ceiling in the data |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹599.00 / kg | ₹110.22 | ₹338.98 | up to 13% |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹507.40 / kg | ₹93.36 | ₹321.44 | up to 10% |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹2,124.00 / 5 kg | ₹78.16 | ₹305.63 | not quoted — check the product page |
Wax moves the sheet by up to ₹32.06 a candle — less than the oil does, but on every candle you make, whatever the scent. The cheaper wax is only cheaper if it performs in your jar and your climate; a wax that gives you more rejects can end up dearer per sellable candle. The reject-rate post sets out that calculation, and the dosage post does the same for two oils at different loads.
Margin and markup, from the same sheet
Once the true cost is known, two percentages describe the gap between cost and price, and they are easily confused. Gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. The same candle has a markup that is always larger than its gross margin, so a maker who says ‘I work on 100%’ may mean 100% markup, which is only a 50% gross margin.
| Example selling price | Gross profit | Gross margin (on price) | Markup (on cost) | Cost as share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹499.00 | ₹160.02 | 32.1% | 47.2% | 67.9% |
| ₹799.00 | ₹460.02 | 57.6% | 135.7% | 42.4% |
| ₹999.00 | ₹660.02 | 66.1% | 194.7% | 33.9% |
At ₹499 the candle keeps ₹160.02 before labour, courier, payment fees and marketing — a 32.1% gross margin. That is thin for a hand-poured product. At ₹799 it keeps ₹460.02, a 57.6% margin. Which of these is ‘enough’ depends on the costs below the line, which is exactly what the ₹499 margin post works through. If you are designing a candle for a fixed price rather than pricing a fixed candle, the ₹399 ceiling post, the ₹799 post and the ₹1,499 allocation post run the sheet in reverse.
Build your own sheet
The worked candle uses our defaults. Your sheet should use your recipe and your quotes. Here are the products behind the CSI-priced lines, with the per-unit numbers you will need.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | 200 g candles at 184 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 g | ₹299.00 | ₹0.60 | 2.72 |
| 1 kg | ₹599.00 | ₹0.60 | 5.43 |
| 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 | ₹0.60 | 27.17 |
| 10 kg | ₹5,999.00 | ₹0.60 | 54.35 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹271.40 | ₹5.43 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹502.68 | ₹5.03 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹2,513.40 | ₹5.03 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,026.80 | ₹5.03 | 62.50 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Candles at 16 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹113.28 | ₹7.55 | 0.94 |
| 50 g | ₹212.40 | ₹4.25 | 3.12 |
| 100 g | ₹377.60 | ₹3.78 | 6.25 |
| 500 g | ₹1,770.00 | ₹3.54 | 31.25 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,540.00 | ₹3.54 | 62.50 |
Here is what a first 20-candle batch of the worked recipe costs to buy, with 4% extra wax and oil. You need 3,827 g of wax and 333 g of oil. The oil can come as one 500 g bottle or as four 100 g bottles (₹2,010.72, 400 g) — the 500 g is ₹5.03 a gram, identical to the 100 g, so choose on how quickly you will use the rest.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 |
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil 500 g | ₹2,513.40 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 20 | ₹118.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 4 packs of 5 | ₹1,416.00 |
| Wick stickers, 40 | ₹100.00 |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper, 100 sheets | ₹650.00 |
| Total, CSI items | ₹7,792.40 |
| Same list with 4 × 100 g Sandalwood instead of 500 g | ₹7,289.72 |
| Lids, labels, boxes (20 each) | your quotes — at our examples, ₹1,100.00 |
That list leaves you with spare wax (5 kg against 3,827 g needed), spare stickers and 80 sheets of tissue, which is normal: packs rarely match one batch. Leftover stock is a cost only if it never gets used, and the leftover-materials post shows how to account for it. For price changes at higher volumes, remember that per-gram price breaks are rare on the listed catalogue — most oils cost the same per gram at 100 g and 1 kg, and Chunks cost the same per kilo from 1 kg to 10 kg.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a costing page the flattering thing for us would be to price only what we sell and let the candle look cheap. This page prices what we sell from our own listings and marks every other line — lid, labels, box, wastage — as an example you must replace, because the honest total is what protects your business.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick, sticker, jar and tissue figures are CSI's listed prices as recorded in this series' catalogue (wicks and jar as verified 10 September 2026, wick stickers and tissue from the 24–25 September pull). Per-gram, per-candle, margin and markup figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The candle is 200 g finished weight at an 8% load (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Lid ₹15.00, labels ₹10.00 and outer box ₹30.00 are example figures, not CSI prices or market rates — replace them with your own quotes. The 4% wastage allowance is a working assumption within the 3–5% range suggested for pour loss and test burns. Gross margin = (price − cost) ÷ price; markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost.
