First 100 candles · bulk vs testing quantities
Buy big what every option shares — wax, jars, stickers. Buy small what a test still has to choose — the launch fragrance and the wick. At CSI the only large per-unit bulk saving in this order is the jar.
₹14,752.83
order 1 today: shared materials in bigger packs plus test quantities for 6 candles · order 2 after the test: ₹5,446.88–₹6,556.08 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What should I buy in bulk? Wax, jars and stickers — every option uses them. At CSI the jar is where bulk saves: Salsa jars are ₹29.50 each from 50 against ₹40.12 in fives.

What should I keep small? Fragrance oils and wicks. 50 g of each shortlisted oil and one 20-pack of Eco Thin C1 until six test candles pass.

Is bulk wax cheaper? Not for Chunks: ₹598.00/kg in 500 g bags, ₹599.90/kg at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI soy wax with a real break (₹424.80/kg from 5 kg).

What does the first run cost? ₹14,752.83 today and ₹5,446.88–₹6,556.08 after the test: ₹20,199.71–₹21,308.91 in CSI materials for 100 saleable candles.
The short answer
Answer: Buy the wax, jars and stickers in bigger packs now; buy fragrance oils and wicks only in testing quantities until test candles pass, then buy production quantities of the winners.
Why: Shared materials cannot be the wrong choice; undecided ones can. And bigger packs are rarely cheaper per unit at CSI — the Salsa jar is the clear exception in this order.
Method: Sort each material: shared? cheaper in bulk? decided? → order 1 (shared + test quantities) → six-candle test → order 2 (winner's oil + proven wick).
Your first 100 candles: sort every material before you order 100 × 150 g (illustrative fill) · 8% · Chunks · Salsa 200 ml jar · two shortlisted oils · Eco Thin C1 BIGGER PACKS NOW — shared by every option Wax 3 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg Chunks · ₹10,183.00 Jars 1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5 · ₹3,752.40 Stickers 3 sheets of 40 · ₹300.00 Tools scale, thermometer, jug — once SMALL UNTIL THE TEST PASSES Oils to test 50 g of each shortlisted oil · ₹399.43 Wicks to test Thin C1 20-pack · ₹118.00 Production oil winner only · ₹4,738.88–₹5,848.08 Production wicks after a full burn · ₹708.00 TEST 6 candles Buy now: ₹14,752.83. Buy after the test: ₹6,556.08 or ₹5,446.88, depending on which oil wins. Guessing instead — production oil for both shortlisted scents up front — would put ₹4,738.88 into the oil you do not use.
Materials every option shares go into bigger packs on order 1; the launch fragrance and the wick stay at test size until six candles have cured and burned, and only the winners are bought in production quantities on order 2. The 150 g fill is illustrative — weigh one Salsa jar first.
Straight answer
I'm making my first 100 candles — what raw materials should I buy in bulk and what should I purchase only in small testing quantities?
Buy in bigger packs only what every option will use: the wax, the jars and the wick stickers. Buy the fragrance oils and the wicks in testing quantities until your test candles pass. For 100 candles in the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar at an illustrative 150 g fill and 8% load, that means order 1 today — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as 3 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹10,183.00), 1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5 of jars (₹3,752.40), stickers, 50 g each of two shortlisted oils and one 20-pack of Eco Thin C1 wicks: ₹14,752.83. After six test candles have cured and burned, order 2 is the winning oil's production quantity and the proven wick: ₹5,446.88–₹6,556.08. Do not assume bulk is cheaper: at CSI the jar has a real 26.5% step; Chunks wax has none (the 10 kg bag is dearer per kilo than 500 g bags); wicks are ₹5.90 at every pack.
One line: big packs for what every option shares, test quantities for what the test still has to choose.
For a first run of 100 candles, buy the materials every option shares in bigger packs now — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (3 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg, ₹10,183.00), 200 ml Salsa Glass Jars (1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5, ₹3,752.40) and stickers — and buy the fragrance oils and wicks only in testing quantities: 50 g of each shortlisted oil and one 20-pack of wicks. Production oil and wicks come after six test candles pass.

The sorting rule: shared, cheaper in bulk, or still undecided

"Buy in bulk" is only good advice for materials that are already decided. On a first run, most of them are not.

Every raw material on a first order falls into one of three groups. Some are shared: whichever fragrance and wick you end up with, you will use the same wax and the same jar, so buying more of them now carries no risk of buying the wrong thing. Some are genuinely cheaper in bigger packs: the listed price per unit falls as the pack grows. And some are undecided: the fragrance you will launch, the wick that gives a safe full melt pool in your jar. The rule is short. Shared and cheaper-in-bulk → buy the bigger pack now. Undecided → buy the smallest sensible test quantity, and the production pack only after the test.

This page works through a realistic first run: 100 candles in the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, which CSI lists with a golden lug cap, at an illustrative 150 g fill. CSI does not publish a fill weight for this jar — 200 ml is its brim volume, not a wax weight — so weigh one test pour and replace 150 g with your own figure. The load is 8% of the finished candle, CSI's working default, so each candle holds 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax. The launch scent is not chosen yet: two oils are shortlisted, Peach Melon Berry and Cucumber Green Tea, and the test decides.

Sorting sheet · first 100 candles · the verdict column is the rule applied, not a product ranking
What to buy in bigger packs and what to keep small
Material Shared by every option? Cheaper per unit in bigger packs? Decided yet? Verdict
Container wax (Chunks) Yes — every oil and wick uses it No — 500 g bags are the cheapest per kg Yes, if you have poured it before Bigger packs now (convenience, not price)
Jars (Salsa 200 ml) Yes Yes — 26.5% cheaper per jar from 50 Yes, after one weighed test pour Bigger packs now
Wick stickers Yes One pack size in stock Yes Now
Tools (scale, thermometer, jug) Yes One-off Yes Now, once
Fragrance oils No — only the winner is used From 15 g to 50–100 g, rarely beyond No Small (50 g each), production after test
Wicks Yes, but only if the size passes No — ₹5.90 at every Thin C1 pack No — no wick chart is published Small (20-pack), production after burn
The CSI principle
Buy big what every option shares. Buy small what the test still has to choose.
The risk in a bulk purchase is not the rupees per kilo; it is buying a large quantity of the wrong thing. Shared materials cannot be the wrong thing.

Where bigger packs actually save money at CSI

The second column of the sorting sheet is where most first-time buyers assume too much. On CSI's listed catalogue, bigger packs are often not cheaper per unit. Here is every material in this order, priced at its smallest and largest listed pack:

Wax CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 · oil CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026 · wick and jar packs re-checked 4 October 2026
Per-unit price at the smallest and largest pack
Material Smallest pack Largest pack Bulk saving
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹598.00/kg (500 g) ₹599.90/kg (10 kg) none — 10 kg is dearer per kg
Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹450.00/kg (1 kg) ₹424.80/kg (5 kg up) 5.6%
CSI 464 ₹520.00/kg (500 g) ₹507.40/kg (1 kg up) 2.4%
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar ₹40.12 each (5) ₹29.50 each (50 or 100) 26.5%
Eco Thin C1 wicks ₹5.90 each (20) ₹5.90 each (1,000) none
Peach Melon Berry ₹5.43/g (15 g) ₹4.18/g (1 kg) 23.0% from 15 g to 100 g, then flat
Cucumber Green Tea ₹6.21/g (15 g) ₹3.33/g (1 kg) 43.2% to 100 g, 5.7% more to 1 kg

Read that honestly. The one large, reliable saving in this order is the jar: the Salsa jar is ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each from 50, so 117 jars bought as 1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5 cost ₹3,752.40 instead of ₹4,814.40 in fives — ₹1,062.00 saved. The wax saves nothing: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is ₹598.00 a kilo in 500 g bags, ₹599.00 at 1 kg and 5 kg and ₹599.90 at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk step (5.6% from 5 kg). Wicks are flat at ₹5.90. Oils have one real step, from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g, and above 100 g most are priced almost linearly — Cucumber Green Tea is one of the minority that also gets cheaper at 500 g and 1 kg.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if we told you to buy a 10 kg bag of Chunks "for the bulk rate". There is no bulk rate on it. The 16.52 kg this run needs costs ₹10,166.00 as 34 × 500 g bags, ₹10,183.00 as 3 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg and ₹10,192.00 as 10 kg + 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg. The bigger bags are worth the extra ₹17.00 only because fewer bags are easier to store and open. If your wax is also untested, buy one 5 kg bag first: with no bulk break, splitting the wax purchase costs nothing.

The bill of materials for the whole first run

Two kinds of candle are poured. Six stage-one candles decide the oil: three in each shortlisted fragrance, same wax, wick and jar. Then the production run follows the series' allowance stack: 4 pre-production test candles from the production lot, a 3% reject allowance, 5% pour loss on wax and oil, 2% breakage on glass and 4 spare wicks — all labelled working assumptions to replace with your own records.

100 × 150 g illustrative fill · 8% · stage one (6 candles) + production stack
From 100 saleable candles to quantities
Step Rule Result
0 · Net requirement 100 saleable candles × 150 g 13,800 g wax · 1,200 g oil · 100 jars · 100 wicks
1 · Test candles (whole candles) +4 candles poured to the same formula 104 candles' worth
2 · Reject allowance production candles = 100 ÷ (1 − 3%) = 103.09 → 104 108 candles poured (4 tests + 104 production)
3 · Pour loss on wax and oil only × (1 + 5%) 15,649.2 g wax · 1,360.8 g oil
4 · Breakage on glass only 108 × (1 + 2%) rounded up 111 jars
Wick spares (separate labelled allowance) 108 + 4 spare 112 wicks · 112 stickers
Stage-one candles (oil decision) 6 × 150 g, outside the production stack 869.4 g wax · 37.8 g oil per shortlisted oil · 6 jars · 6 wicks
Wax for everything (6 + 108) × 138 g × 1.05 16,518.6 g
Jars for everything (6 + 108) × 1.02, up 117 jars

The production oil — 1,360.8 g — is the line that waits. Everything else in that table is the same whichever oil wins, which is exactly why it can be bought now. The 105-or-110 post argues the size of each allowance; the burn-test budget post explains how many test candles a fuller programme takes.

Weigh one jar before you order a hundred
Fill one Salsa jar to the line you want with melted wax, let it set, and weigh it. That single number replaces the illustrative 150 g everywhere on this page: wax and oil scale in proportion, jar and wick counts do not change. If you fill by volume, wax is lighter than water — a labelled working conversion of roughly 0.86–0.90 g per ml, varying by wax and temperature — so always confirm with the weighed pour.

The lid is already in the order: the Salsa jar is listed with a golden lug cap, so no separate lid line is needed. Note the 6 + 2 wick arithmetic: the stage-one 20-pack leaves about a dozen Thin C1 wicks, which go into production if Thin C1 passes. If it does not, they are the cheapest lesson on this list — and the reason production wicks are not bought today. The wick sample-ladder post covers testing more than one wick type at once.

The expensive guess: bulk-buying the launch scent before the test. Buying production oil for both shortlisted fragrances "so you are ready either way" costs ₹10,586.96 and leaves ₹4,738.88 in the oil you do not launch. Six test candles cost two 50 g bottles. Fix: test first, then order the winner — production oil is usually the largest single line on a first run after wax and jars, and the only one that can be entirely wrong.

The six-candle test that unlocks order 2

1
Weigh one jar's fillBefore anything else, pour and weigh one Salsa jar so the 150 g on this page becomes your real number.
2
Pour three candles per oil12 g oil + 138 g wax per candle at 8%, same wax bag, same Thin C1 wick, same day. Number each jar and note the oil on the base.
3
Cure to labelled checkpointsCSI's page for Chunks states a cure of at least 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks. Score cold throw at fixed checkpoints, for example 7 and 14 days.
4
Burn in matched pairsOne candle of each oil side by side, 3–4 hours per cycle (a commonly used working practice), full cool-down between. Record pool width, flame, soot and a blind throw score.
5
Run one candle per oil to the endFull-life burns show late tunnelling or a hotter lower jar. If Thin C1 fails in either oil, change the wick before placing order 2.
6
Place order 2Winner's production oil plus 120 wicks of the size that passed. Nothing else needs re-ordering.

Two scents tested is a choice, not a rule. If you want to launch both, the two-fragrance post shows how to share one wax purchase across separate oils, and the four-fragrance post runs 25 candles each in four oils. If the budget, not the scent, is the constraint, the ₹10,000 starter budget post divides a fixed sum across the same categories.

This page owns the split between bulk and test quantities on a first run. 100 lavender candles in 8 cm jars is a complete one-oil list; 75 bergamot candles from testing to production follows a single scent through every stage; minimum-leftover pack sizes fine-tunes the rounding; and the 100-candle template pulls it all into one sheet. For later runs, the ₹25,000 first-inventory post applies the same bulk-or-small rule to a fixed budget.

Bulk is a reward for being sure. On a first run, be sure of the wax and the jar first, and let six candles decide the rest.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page tells you that our largest wax bag is not cheaper per kilo than our smallest and that you should not buy production oil or wicks until a test passes — both cost us sales today. We publish no throw or burn data for any oil, wax or wick, so the test decides.

Frequently asked questions

What candle supplies should I buy in bulk as a beginner?
Only materials every option shares and that you have already used: container wax, jars and wick stickers. Keep fragrance oils and wicks at test size until your test candles pass.
Is it cheaper to buy candle wax in bulk?
Not always. At CSI, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs ₹598.00/kg in 500 g bags and ₹599.90/kg at 10 kg. Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI soy wax with a real break, ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg.
How much fragrance oil should I buy for testing?
Enough for three test candles per oil. At 8% in a 150 g candle that is 36 g per oil, so a 50 g bottle covers it with a pour-loss allowance. CSI sells no sample pack; build your own from 15 g and 50 g bottles.
Should I buy 100 wicks before testing?
No. Eco Thin C1 costs ₹5.90 a wick at every pack size, so there is no bulk saving to lose by waiting. Test from a 20-pack (the 10-pack is out of stock), then buy production wicks.
How many jars should I order for 100 candles?
With 6 stage-one candles, 4 pre-production tests, a 3% reject allowance and 2% breakage (labelled assumptions), 117 jars — 1 × pack of 100 + 4 × pack of 5 of Salsa jars.
What is the first thing to do before ordering candle supplies?
Weigh one test pour in the jar you plan to use. Fill weight drives every wax and oil quantity, and CSI publishes it only for the 85 g tin and the 50 g velvet jar.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The sorting rule — shared, cheaper in bulk, decided — applies to any supplier; prices and pack sizes are from the CSI range.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L). The 150 g fill is illustrative — the Salsa jar's fill weight is not published and 200 ml is its brim volume; the 0.86–0.90 g/ml wax conversion is a labelled working approximation. Six stage-one candles, 4 pre-production test candles, 3% rejects, 5% pour loss, 2% glass breakage, 4 spare wicks, 3–4 hour burn cycles and 7/14-day cure checkpoints are labelled working assumptions. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — fragrance load up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights (except the Golden Aluminium Tin's 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar's 50 g), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw, burn or cure data for any oil or wax, and no volume discount beyond the listed packs. Label and box lines are examples, never in the CSI total. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
