I'm Receiving Repeat Bulk Candle Orders — How Do I Prevent a Future Jar Discontinuation From Forcing Me to Reformulate and Re-Wick My Entire Product?
शेयर करना
What does an unplanned re-wick cost? In our worked example, re-wicking 8 fragrances in a new jar takes 64 test candles and ₹14,413.84 in materials, plus several weeks of burn tests. Pre-qualifying a backup on your top 3 scents and confirming the other 5 takes 34 candles and ₹7,659.80, and you do it on your schedule.
How much jar stock should I hold? Enough to cover the time it takes to switch, not a year. At 100 jars a week, a 9-week unprepared switch needs 900 jars (₹63,720.00 at ₹70.80 a jar); a pre-qualified 3-week switch needs 300 (₹21,240.00).
What should I do first? Measure five of your current jars today and write a spec sheet, then order samples of one or two jars that list a similar diameter and bracket-test them on your best-selling fragrances.

Why one jar change reaches every fragrance
When makers say a discontinued jar forced them to "reformulate", the wax and fragrance oil usually stayed the same. What they had to redo was everything the old jar had quietly fixed in place. A jar sets five things, and each of them sits downstream of the one before:
| Jar property | What it sets in your product | What a change forces | Per fragrance? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal diameter at pool height | Melt-pool area, so the wick size | A wick bracket and full burn-downs | Yes: fragrances can burn differently on the same wick |
| Internal depth and shape (taper, shoulder) | Fill volume, burn behaviour late in the candle | New fill weight; final-third checks | Fill weight no; late-burn checks yes |
| Fill-line volume | Finished weight, so wax and oil grams at your load | New batch maths and a new net-weight label | No, one figure per jar |
| Rim and lid | Lid fit, headspace, lid clearance above the flame | Lid sourcing and a fit check | No |
| Outer size and shape | Label size, box size, parcel weight | New labels, boxes, maybe a courier slab | No |
The expensive row is the first one. Melt-pool area rises with the square of the internal radius: a jar 7.0 cm across inside has about 38.48 cm² of surface; at 7.5 cm it is about 44.18 cm², roughly 14.8% more. A change that size can take a wick from right to under-sized. And because fragrance oils vary in how they burn, a wick that suits one scent in the new jar may not suit another; the fragrance-by-wick question is covered in our guide to wicks that work with one fragrance and tunnel with another. That is why a jar change multiplies across the range: one bracket per fragrance.
The rows below it are cheaper, but they are also where repeat bulk customers notice. A corporate client who reorders expects the same net weight on the label, the same lid and the same box. The net-weight process for a new jar is in our guide to setting a label net weight.
What an unplanned re-wick costs, by range size
Here is a worked example you can rerun with your own numbers. For each fragrance, a re-wick in a new jar needs a bracket of three wick options (Eco C1, Eco C2 and Cotton Braided as starting rungs, not answers), two candles on each, then two confirmation candles on the winning wick burned all the way down: eight 150 g candles per fragrance. We cost them in the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) as the replacement jar, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at the 10 kg price, 12 g of oil per candle at the Jasmine Fragrance Oil 100 g price as a stand-in for your range, and the actual wick used. One test candle on a C2 wick costs ₹225.46; one fragrance's eight candles cost ₹1,801.73.
| Range size | Test candles | Materials | Calendar time (our judgement) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 fragrances | 32 | ₹7,206.92 | several weeks: cure, bracket burns, full burn-downs |
| 8 fragrances | 64 | ₹14,413.84 | about the same calendar time if you run them in parallel; more if your burn space is limited |
| 12 fragrances | 96 | ₹21,620.76 | longer: 96 candles need burn space, supervision and records |
Per fragrance: jars ₹755.20, wax ₹560.17, oil ₹412.80, wicks ₹73.56. Material costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Two things make the real cost higher. First, labour: every burn is supervised, timed and recorded, and a full burn-down of a 150 g candle takes several sessions. Second, time without product: while you test, you either ship old stock or you ship nothing. For a business on repeat bulk orders, that second cost can easily outweigh the materials. The Woody Oud page, for example, asks makers to cure soy candles for 48 to 72 hours before burn testing; your cure time sits inside every one of those weeks.
The five-layer continuity plan
| Layer | What you do | What it costs | What it saves you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Spec sheet + golden samples | Measure 5 current jars; record internal diameter at 3 heights, height, fill-line water weight, rim, base, empty weight; keep 5 unused | An afternoon and 5 jars | The reference any replacement is judged against |
| 2. Diameter band | Group your wick map by measured internal diameter, not by jar name | Nothing extra; a column in your records | Lets a new jar inherit your wicks after a confirmation burn |
| 3. Pre-qualified backup | Full bracket on top 3 fragrances, confirmation on the rest | ₹7,659.80 (8-fragrance example) | Weeks of testing after notice |
| 4. Safety stock sized to switch time | Weekly usage × weeks your switch takes | ₹21,240.00 prepared vs ₹63,720.00 unprepared | A gap in shipping while you retest |
| 5. Early warning | Watch listing stock and titles; ask your supplier for notice | Five minutes a month | The weeks between a warning and a stockout |
Layer 1: the spec sheet and golden samples
A spec sheet is your record of the jar as it actually arrived, not as it was listed. CSI listings give at most an outer diameter, a "diameter" or a "width", never an internal diameter; the White Matte family says "Height 8 cm width 7 cm", and the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) says "outer diameter 7cm" with a base of about 6.5 cm. Neither tells you what your wick sees. Measure internal diameter across the inside at the wax surface height and two lower heights with callipers or a ruler, water-fill to your fill line on a tared scale, measure the rim for the lid and weigh the empty jar. Then set five jars aside, unused and labelled with the batch date. When a replacement arrives, you compare it against those five, not against a memory. What to ask the supplier for in writing is covered in our guide to reordering one jar for years.
Layer 2: a diameter band, not a jar name
Your wick decision really belongs to an internal diameter, and only incidentally to a product listing. If your records say "Fragrance A: C2 in jars measuring 6.3 to 6.5 cm inside at pool height" instead of "Fragrance A: C2 in the white matte jar", then any jar that measures inside that band is a candidate to inherit the wick after a confirmation burn. The band's width is a judgement you prove with burn tests; how similar diameters must be before one wick covers them is in our one-wick-across-jars guide, and the business case for fewer wick sizes is in our guide to standardising on similar diameters.
Designing around a diameter band: CSI's 7 cm listings
Several CSI listings state a figure of about 7 cm across. Because none of them states an internal diameter, and "width", "outer diameter" and "diameter" are different things, treat this table as a shortlist to measure, not a match:
| Listing family | Stated size wording | Stated capacity | Heat wording | Per jar | Stock on 26 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte Glass Jar and its matte, frosted and glossy sisters | "Height 8 cm width 7 cm" | "a fill weight of 200 ml" | "withstand high heat" (no figure) | ₹70.80 at 5 or 10 | 13 of 16 colour listings in stock; Pink Matte, Frosted Brown, Orange Frosted out |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) and coloured 150 g jars | "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm"; base about 6.5 cm | 150 g | "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" | ₹94.40 clear; ₹107.00 coloured | Clear, Black, Red, Pink, Orange in stock; Amber out |
| Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid - 300g | "Diameter - 7cm Height - 10cm" | 300 g | none stated | ₹150.00 single | Green in stock; White Iridescent out |
Three observations. First, the three families differ in height, so they differ in capacity (roughly 150 g to 300 g); height changes capacity and burn time, not the wick's job at the pool, provided the internal diameter matches. Second, the matte family's "width" and the 150 g family's "outer diameter" might describe similar or different insides; wall thickness decides, and the 150 g page describes its glass as thick-walled. Only callipers can tell you. Third, of these three families only the 150 g family states a numeric hot-pour figure ("Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", the page's wording); a backup that states no figure needs its own heat and burn-down testing whatever its diameter, and CSI publishes no thermal-shock or burn-down data for any of these jars.
A family matters as much as a diameter. The 8 × 7 cm family shares one set of listed dimensions across 16 colour listings, so if one colour goes out of stock your geometry may still be available in another, provided you measure the colour you switch to. The same is true, on a smaller scale, of the 150 g apothecary-style family. Ask us on WhatsApp for internal dimensions if you need a figure before your samples arrive, and still measure the samples.
Backup jar and safety stock: the maths
Pre-qualifying the backup
You don't need to re-wick your whole range to qualify a backup. Worked example for an 8-fragrance range: run the full bracket (6 candles plus 2 confirmation burn-downs) on your three best-sellers, which is 38% of the range, and two confirmation burn-downs on the mapped wick for each of the other five. That is 24 + 10 = 34 test candles: ₹5,405.19 for the top three and ₹2,254.61 for the confirmations, ₹7,659.80 in all. The full unplanned re-wick in the same example is 64 candles and ₹14,413.84, so the plan uses ₹6,754.04 less in materials. More importantly, you run it in a quiet month, not during a stockout. If a confirmation fails on one fragrance, you bracket that one; you have lost a week on one scent, not nine weeks on the range.
Sizing safety stock to your switch time
Safety stock (jars) = weekly jar usage × weeks your switch takes. Your switch time is how long it takes from "this jar is gone" to "the replacement is in production": sourcing, measuring, any burn tests, labels. The worked example uses 100 jars a week and switch times from the timeline above (our judgement, not data):
| Situation | Switch time | Safety stock | Cash at ₹70.80 a jar | Cash at ₹94.40 a jar |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unprepared: find, test and relabel a new jar | 9 weeks | 900 jars | ₹63,720.00 | ₹84,960.00 |
| Prepared: backup pre-qualified, confirm incoming batch | 3 weeks | 300 jars | ₹21,240.00 | ₹28,320.00 |
| Difference | 6 weeks | 600 jars | ₹42,480.00 | the same logic at a higher jar price |
Pre-qualification costs ₹7,659.80 once in materials and frees ₹42,480.00 of cash that would otherwise sit in cartons, where glass can also chip, get damp or go out of fashion. The ordinary reorder-point maths for a supplier that restocks in two to four weeks is a different question, covered in our jar inventory guide; whether to stock up or find a second supplier when stockouts are frequent is in our stockouts guide.
Early-warning signs, including in our own catalogue
Watch for these signals on any supplier's store, ours included. On 26 September 2026 CSI's own jar catalogue shows several of them, and we'd rather you see them here than be surprised:
| Signal | Example in CSI listings | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One colour out of stock in an in-stock family | Pink Matte, Frosted Brown and Orange Frosted out while 13 sister colours are in stock; Amber 150 g out while Clear, Black, Red, Pink and Orange are in | Ask whether it is a stock gap or a discontinuation; measure a sister colour as your backup |
| One size out of stock in a range | Borosilicate 300 g and 250 g listings out while the 600 g is in stock | Don’t build a range on the out-of-stock size |
| Sibling listing out of stock | White Iridescent 300 g out while Green Iridescent is in | Treat the in-stock sibling as single-source |
| Whole listing out of stock | Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid and Amber Glass Jar with Bamboo Lid out; Premium Ceramic and Cute Ceramic containers out | Don’t start a range on it; ask for a restock date |
| Stale or contradictory listing text | Several 150 g titles still say "Deliveries Starting 5th Dec"; some pages carry copied colour or lid text | Confirm the detail on WhatsApp before a bulk order |
None of these proves a jar is being dropped; an out-of-stock flag can be a temporary gap. They are prompts to ask. The question to ask any supplier is simple: how long has this jar been listed, do you expect to keep it, and will you tell me before it goes? Write the answer on your spec sheet with the date.
Set it up this month: seven steps
Run step 5 on the final third as seriously as the first burn: heat builds as the candle burns down, and approving a jar on early burns alone is a common mistake. Why the final third matters commercially is in our final-third guide. Burn within sight, keep candles away from draughts, and stop each burn with about 1 cm of wax left, a common practice.

Continuity before Diwali, 8 November 2026
Diwali is 43 days after this guide's pull date. Don't switch a range's jar in October: there is no time for full burn-downs, and repeat corporate clients notice a changed jar in their gift orders. Instead, confirm your current jar is in stock, hold safety stock for the season plus your switch time, and schedule the backup qualification for after the festive rush. If a jar you depend on goes out of stock in the next few weeks, a four-week cushion at 100 jars a week is 400 jars, ₹28,320.00 at the White Matte price.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars and wicks named here and does not sell finished candles. This page names out-of-stock colours, sizes and sibling listings in our own catalogue as warning signs, tells you not to buy a year of jars from us, and says the right backup may be a jar we don't stock. That is deliberate: a maker with a continuity plan keeps reordering.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table was in stock on that date, and out-of-stock listings are named as such. Dimensions, capacity and heat wording are quoted from product pages; no CSI listing states an internal diameter.
The eight-candle bracket per fragrance, the switch times, the 100-jars-a-week usage and the use of Jasmine as a stand-in oil are worked-example assumptions and our judgement, not data. Pool-area figures use internal diameter. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message WhatsApp +91 7397976926.

Non-price figures: the 150 g candle at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax, load as a share of total candle weight) is the series planning figure; eight test candles per fragrance, 100 jars a week, 9-week and 3-week switch times, the 4-week festive cushion and Jasmine as a representative oil are worked-example assumptions and our judgement. Pool areas (7.0 cm → 38.48 cm², 7.5 cm → 44.18 cm², +14.8%) use internal diameter. CSI 464's up-to-10% ceiling is a formulation limit stated on its page, not a regulatory limit. The Woody Oud page's 48–72 hour cure wording is quoted as an example. Heat wording is quoted from product pages; CSI publishes no thermal-shock, burn-down or breakage data.
