Test several, launch one. A container test is cheap and it answers a question you cannot answer on paper. A launch spread across several jars is expensive, because every jar needs its own wick, its own label and its own stock, and none of them reaches a pack price.
₹2,514.80
to test five containers with one scent and two wick options, ten candles in all · CSI pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I test several jars or pick one? Test several, launch in one. A ten-candle test across five containers costs ₹2,514.80. Launching across several jars multiplies wick sizes, labels and stock, and keeps every jar at its small-pack price.

Which jar size sells best? We have no sales data by jar size, and it depends on your price point and customer. What we can price is the cost per candle in each container, from ₹94.04 to ₹249.26. See the comparison.

How much do candle jars cost at CSI? White Matte ₹70.80 each (5 for ₹354.00), Salsa 200 ml with lug cap ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100, Yankee 130 ml with cap ₹47.20, golden 85 g tins ₹30.00 each in twelves, Heart velvet jars ₹45.00.

What does standardising one jar save? For 60 candles, one Salsa jar costs ₹1,876.20 in containers; spreading 20 each across three jars costs ₹2,938.40, before the extra labels and wick sizes. See standardise vs spread.
The short answer
Test: Roasted Coconut 100 g ₹495.00 · CSI 464 1.5 kg ₹767.40 · containers ₹1,099.00 · Eco Thin C1 and Thick C2 wicks ₹153.40 = ₹2,514.80 for 10 test candles.
Per candle: White Matte Glass Jar ₹249.26; 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar ₹192.70; Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml ₹148.01; Golden Aluminium Tin ₹109.24; Heart Cutout Velvet Jar ₹94.04 (smallest-pack price).
Standardise: 60 candles in one Salsa jar ₹1,876.20 vs three jar types ₹2,938.40. The 100-candle bill of materials assumes one standard jar.
Five containers from CSI's range — fill weight and material cost per candle ₹249.26White Matte200 g₹192.70Salsa 200 ml170 g *₹148.01Yankee 130 ml110 g *₹109.24Golden tin85 g₹94.04Heart velvet50 g Roasted Coconut at 8% (100 g rate), CSI 464, Eco Thin C1, smallest-pack container price. * Dashed = fill not published; illustrative, weigh your own.
Heights are proportional to fill weight. The golden tin (85 g) and Heart velvet jar (50 g) have published fills; the White Matte jar uses this series' 200 g default. The Salsa 200 ml and Yankee 130 ml fills are not published, so 170 g and 110 g are illustrative placeholders: fill one with water, weigh it, and replace them before you cost anything. Figures above each container are material cost per candle: wax, oil, wick and the container at its smallest-pack price.
Straight answer
I'm starting a candle business but don't know which jar size will sell. Should I test several containers or standardise one jar first?
Test several, then standardise one before you launch. Testing is cheap: one scent, five containers and two wick options is ten candles and ₹2,514.80 at CSI's prices, using 100 g of Roasted Coconut, 1.5 kg of CSI 464 wax, and small packs of the White Matte jar, 200 ml Salsa jar, Yankee 130 ml jar, golden 85 g tin and Heart velvet jar. Using one scent isolates the variable you are testing. Launching in several jars is expensive in ways that do not show on the jar price: each size needs its own proven wick, its own label and its own stock, and none of them reaches a pack price. Standardising unlocks those prices. The Salsa jar is ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100. For a 60-candle launch, one jar costs ₹1,876.20 in containers against ₹2,938.40 for three jar types at 20 each. We have no sales data by jar size, so choose on burn quality, material cost per candle and the price you want to sell at. Add a second size later, once the first is selling.
One line: test five for about ₹2,500; launch in one; add a second size only when the first sells.
The test uses one scent throughout: Roasted Coconut 100 g at ₹495.00. That is enough for all ten test candles (98.4 g at 8%), and it is one of the 24 oils with a real 1 kg saving (19.2% per gram) if it becomes your launch scent.

Five containers, costed

A jar is not just a jar price. It is a fill weight, a wick, a lid or no lid, and a pack size you may or may not reach.

CSI's container range includes five that suit a starting brand. Only two publish a fill weight: the Golden Aluminium Tin at 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at 50 g of wax. The White Matte Glass Jar uses this series' 200 g default. The 200 ml Salsa jar and Yankee 130 ml jar are sold by volume, and their wax fill is not published. We use 170 g and 110 g as illustrative placeholders so the maths can run. Do not rely on them. Fill your jar with water to the level you will pour, weigh it, and use that.

Roasted Coconut at 8% · 100 g rate · CSI 464 · Eco Thin C1 · CSI prices, September 2026
Every container, costed per candle
Container Fill Unit price, smallest pack Unit price, largest pack Lid Material cost per candle Per 100 g of candle
White Matte Glass Jar 200 g (series default) ₹70.80 ₹70.80 Not included ₹249.26 ₹124.63
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap 170 g (illustrative — weigh yours) ₹40.12 ₹29.50 Included ₹192.70 ₹113.35
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml, clear cap 110 g (illustrative — weigh yours) ₹47.20 ₹47.20 Included ₹148.01 ₹134.55
Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g (published 85 g fill) ₹30.00 ₹30.00 Tin ₹109.24 ₹128.52
Heart Cutout Velvet Jar, Red 50 g (published 50 g wax capacity) ₹45.00 ₹45.00 Not included ₹94.04 ₹188.08

Read the last column. Small containers cost more per gram of candle, because the container and wick are fixed costs that do not shrink with the fill. The 50 g Heart jar costs about ₹188.08 per 100 g of candle; the White Matte about ₹124.63. That does not make small candles a bad idea. It means their selling price has to carry a larger share of packaging per gram, which introducing a smaller affordable candle and why a 100 g candle costs more per gram than a 300 g work through.

Lids, caps and pack sizes

Two containers come with a closure: the Salsa jar's golden lug cap and the Yankee jar's clear cap. For the others, a lid is a separate purchase from your own supplier. CSI's data has no lid prices, so as an example only, a lid at ₹25.00 (replace with a real quote) would lift the White Matte candle to ₹274.26. That is the kind of difference a container test should surface before you commit. Material cost here excludes labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST.

Pack sizes matter just as much. The White Matte jar is listed only in fives and the golden tin only in twelves, so their unit price never falls. The Heart velvet jar is ₹45.00 whether you buy one or ten. The Salsa jar is the exception: ₹40.12 each in fives, ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100. That break is only available to a maker who commits to one jar in quantity, which is the practical case for standardising early. Oil works the other way round from containers: for most oils the per-gram price above 100 g is flat, while this one container has a real break at 50.

Where the prices come from
Oil and wax: CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco Thin C1 wicks: Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. Salsa, Yankee, golden tin, Heart jar and the Thick C2 10-pack: CSI's container and wick pull of 24–25 September 2026. Fill weights are published only where stated.

The container test

A good container test changes one thing at a time. Use one scent in every container, so differences come from the container, not the fragrance. Use two wick options per container, because wick sizing for jar diameters is not published in this data and the right wick for a 50 g heart jar is unlikely to be the right one for a 200 g jar. Ten candles is enough: five containers, two wicks each.

Container test · 10 candles · CSI prices, September 2026
Everything the test needs
Item Quantity Price Used
Roasted Coconut 100 g ₹495.00 98.4 g
CSI 464 wax 1 kg + 500 g ₹767.40 1,131.6 g (+5% = 1,188 g)
White Matte Glass Jars 5 ₹354.00 2
200 ml Salsa jars 5 ₹200.60 2
Yankee 130 ml jars 2 ₹94.40 2
Golden tins 12 ₹360.00 2
Heart velvet jars 2 ₹90.00 2
Eco Thin C1 + Thick C2 10 + 10 ₹153.40 5 + 5
Test total ₹2,514.80 Tools assumed owned

The spare containers are not wasted. Three White Matte jars, three Salsa jars and ten tins remain; whichever container wins, its spares are the first few candles of the launch. Wax is bought as 1 kg plus 500 g of CSI 464, rated up to 10% fragrance by the wax maker, so the 8% load is inside that formulation ceiling. The fill weights for Salsa and Yankee are placeholders; if your weighed fills differ, re-run the oil and wax lines before you order.

1
Weigh a water fill of every containerFill to the pour line, weigh, and note it. This replaces the illustrative 170 g and 110 g with your real figures.
2
Pour two candles per container at 8%Oil = fill × 0.08, wax = fill − oil. One with an Eco Thin C1, one with an Eco Thick C2. Mark the base.
3
Cure, then burn in the same roomAllow about a week as a working assumption. Burn one container type at a time, long enough for the pool to reach the edge.
4
Score each candlePool reaches the edge? Flame steady? Soot on the glass? Scent across the room? Container too hot to touch? The wick that passes in each container is your wick for that size.
5
Cost the passesFor each container that passed, take its material cost per candle from the table above (with your weighed fill), add your own lid, label and box quotes, and set it against the price you want to charge.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell every one of these containers, and a supplier would happily see a new brand launch in all five. We think that is the wrong move. Five jar types means five wick sizes to stock, five labels to design and five stock lines to run out of, and each jar stays at its small-pack price. Test all five; launch one.

Standardise vs spread

The cheapest thing about a single standard jar is everything it lets you stop thinking about.

Suppose the test is done and you plan a launch of 60 candles. You can put all 60 in one container, or spread them across three sizes, 20 each, "to see which sells". The container bill alone already differs, and that is before the costs that multiply with each size.

60-candle launch · containers only · CSI prices, September 2026
One standard jar vs three sizes
Plan Containers bought Container cost Wick sizes to stock Label designs
One jar: Salsa 200 ml 50-pack + 2 × 5-pack = 60 ₹1,876.20 1 1
Three jars × 20 White Matte 4 × 5 · Salsa 4 × 5 · golden tins 2 × 12 ₹2,938.40 Up to 3 3

The single-jar plan reaches the Salsa jar's 50-pack, where the unit price falls from ₹40.12 to ₹29.50, a 26.5% saving that is one of the few genuine pack breaks in CSI's container range. Spread across three sizes, no jar gets past its smallest pack. Part of the gap is simply that the White Matte jar costs more per unit than the other two; the rest is pack price. The per-size costs outside CSI's catalogue multiply too. As an example only, if a label design and first print cost ₹500.00 per jar size (replace with your printer's quote), three sizes cost ₹1,500.00 against ₹500.00 for one. Wick stock multiplies with size, and so does the burn testing each new size needs.

Spreading also muddies the result you wanted. If the 85 g tin outsells the 200 g jar, is that the size, the price, the look, or the fact that it was cheaper? With 20 candles each, you cannot tell. A launch in one jar tells you whether the scents sell. A second size added later, against a known baseline, tells you whether the size sells. How jar size affects cost, shipping weight and margin at ₹499, ₹799 and ₹1,199 is the pricing side of that later decision.

Choosing the one

We have no sales data by jar size, so this page will not tell you which size sells. What it can do is list the questions that decide it, all of which your test answers.

Decision checklist · your test results decide

Did it burn cleanly with one of the two wicks? No clean burn, no product Your test

The CSI principle
Test wide, standardise early, add sizes one at a time.
Every new container size is a new product: a new wick, a new label, new stock and a new burn test. Launch in one, learn which scents sell, then add a second size against a known baseline.
The mistake that looks like market research. "Let customers choose the size" sounds customer-led. With a small launch it produces thin data and fat stock: three sizes, each at 20 candles, each needing its own reorder. If you want to know whether a smaller candle sells, launch it second, at a clear price below your main jar, and compare. Margins when the same materials go into single candles and gift sets covers mixing formats later.

Once the jar is settled, every other purchase gets simpler. The 100-candle bill of materials, buying for 50 candles or the next batch and the ₹10,000 plan all assume one standard jar, because that is what makes a shopping list repeatable.

Test five jars for the price of a few candles. Launch in one for the price of a real business.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell all five containers on this page, and we are advising you to launch in one. That is because every extra size costs you wick stock, labels and small-pack prices, not because any one of them is better.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco Thin C1 wicks are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. Salsa, Yankee, golden tin and Heart jar prices and the Eco Thick C2 10-pack are from CSI's container and wick pull of 24–25 September 2026. Fill weights are published for the golden tin (85 g) and Heart jar (50 g of wax) only.

The 170 g Salsa and 110 g Yankee fills are illustrative placeholders, not CSI figures; weigh your own. The 200 g White Matte fill is this series' default. The 8% load, one-week cure and ₹25.00 lid and ₹500.00 label examples are working assumptions or examples to replace. We publish no sales data by jar size. Frequently asked questions

What size candle jar sells best in India?
We have no sales data by jar size, and it varies with price point and customer. Test several containers for burn quality and cost, launch in one at the price you want, and add a second size later against that baseline.
How do I find out how much wax a candle jar holds?
Fill it with water to the level you will pour and weigh it. Use that as the candle weight: oil = weight × load, wax = weight − oil. CSI publishes fills for the golden tin (85 g) and Heart velvet jar (50 g of wax) only.
Which candle jars come with a lid?
In this set, the 200 ml Salsa jar (golden lug cap) and the Yankee 130 ml jar (clear cap). The White Matte jar and Heart velvet jar need a lid or cover from your own supplier if you want one.
Are candle jars cheaper in bulk?
Some are. The Salsa 200 ml jar is ₹40.12 each in fives and ₹29.50 each at 50 or 100. The White Matte jar is listed only in fives (₹70.80 each) and the golden tin only in twelves (₹30.00 each).
How many jars should I test before launching?
As many as you are genuinely considering, two candles each with different wicks. Five containers is ten candles, ₹2,514.80 at CSI's prices with one 100 g scent and 1.5 kg of wax.
Do different jar sizes need different wicks?
Usually, yes. Wick sizing for jar diameters is not published in this data, so burn-test each container with at least two wick options, such as Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2.
Test wide, launch in one
Five containers, one scent, two wicks. Then commit to the jar that passed.
White Matte jars, 200 ml Salsa jars with lug caps (₹29.50 each at 50+), Yankee 130 ml jars with caps, golden 85 g tins and Heart velvet jars, plus Eco wicks and CSI 464 soy wax. Tell us which jars you are considering and we will price the test.
