"100 candles" is the number you want to sell. The number you have to buy for is larger: test candles, a few pours that will not pass, wax left on the jug, and packs that only come in fixed sizes. This page counts every one.
₹324.40
real material cost per sellable candle for a 100-candle run, against ₹280.90 on the naive list · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much wax do I need for 100 candles? For 200 g candles at 8%: 18.4 kg net. With 4 reject pours, 4 test candles and 5% pour loss, 20,870 g, so buy 21 kg of CSI 464 (₹10,655.40).

How much fragrance oil for 100 candles? 1.6 kg net at 16 g a candle. This plan buys 26 candles' worth per scent plus 5%, 436.8 g each, rounded to real packs: ₹12,519.40 for four scents, plus ₹469.42 of 15 g testers.

How many jars and wicks? 110 jars (104 pours + 4 tests + 2 for breakage) and 120 wicks (108 used, the rest for re-pours). See the bill of materials.

What does each candle really cost? ₹324.40 per sellable candle when testing, rejects, wastage and pack rounding are shared across the 100, against ₹280.90 if you only cost the candle itself. See the true cost.
The short answer
Wax: Net 18,400 g · + reject pours and tests 1,476 g · + 5% loss = 20,870 g → 21 kg CSI 464 ₹10,655.40.
Fragrance: 4 × 15 g testers ₹469.42 · production Blue Ocean 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹2,227.00; Cinnamon 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹2,690.40; Dark Vanilla 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹3,570.00; Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹4,032.00.
Jars and wicks: 22 packs of White Matte jars ₹7,788.00 · 120 Eco Thin C1 ₹708.00 · 120 wick stickers ₹300.00. 50 candles: exact or next batch too? is the smaller case.
From 100 candles to the real shopping list — every step adds material 100 jars100 sellable104 jars+ 4 reject pours108 jars+ 4 test candles110 jars+ 2 spare jars Then +5% pour loss on wax and oil, then round up to real pack sizes: 21 kg of wax and 450 g of each oil. Naive list ₹28,090.16 (₹280.90 a candle) · real list ₹32,440.22 (₹324.40 per sellable candle)
Each bar counts jars, because every pour needs one. One extra pour per scent covers candles that fail inspection, four test candles come before production, and two jars cover breakage. Wax and oil then get 5% on top for pour loss, and everything is rounded up to the pack sizes CSI actually lists. None of those layers is waste in the careless sense; each one is the cost of ending with 100 candles you can sell.
Straight answer
I'm starting with 100 candles. Exactly how much wax, fragrance oil, wicks and jars should I buy, including testing and wastage?
For 100 sellable 200 g candles at an 8% load in four scents, buy: 21 kg of CSI 464 soy wax (₹10,655.40); four 15 g testers (₹469.42) plus 50 g + 4 × 100 g of Blue Ocean, 50 g + 4 × 100 g of Cinnamon, 50 g + 4 × 100 g of Dark Vanilla, 50 g + 4 × 100 g of Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) (₹12,519.40); 110 White Matte jars (₹7,788.00); 120 Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹708.00); and 120 wick stickers (₹300.00). Total: ₹32,440.22. The quantities are built in layers. The 100 candles need 18.4 kg of wax and 1.6 kg of oil net. One extra pour per scent covers candles that fail inspection. Four test candles come first. Wax and oil get 5% for pour loss, a working assumption. Then every line is rounded up to a real pack. That makes the true cost ₹324.40 per sellable candle, ₹43.50 more than the ₹280.90 you get by costing one candle and multiplying by 100. Tools are assumed owned; add ₹1,475.00 if not.
One line: buy for 104 pours, 4 tests and 5% loss, then round up to real packs — not for 100.
The wax for the whole run is 21 kg of CSI 464, ₹10,655.40: two 10 kg packs and one 1 kg. CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike, so the pack mix is about convenience, not price.

Four layers on top of 100

If you buy for exactly 100 candles, you will make about 95.

A shopping list for 100 candles built as "one candle × 100" runs short every time, because making candles has losses that do not show up in a single-candle recipe. Some wax stays on the jug. A candle or two sinks or cracks and cannot be sold. Test candles use material before production starts. And you cannot buy 18.9 kg of wax; you buy 19 kg or 20 kg, in the packs the supplier lists. The fix is to build the list in layers, each one explicit, so you can see what each costs and change the assumptions to your own.

Layered quantities · 200 g candle · 8% load · working assumptions labelled
How 100 becomes the real list
Layer Why Assumption Adds
1 · Net 100 candles × 184 g wax + 16 g oil Series default 200 g at 8% 18,400 g wax · 1,600 g oil · 100 jars · 100 wicks
2 · Reject pours Candles that fail inspection (sinkholes, cracked or chipped jars, off-centre wicks) 1 extra pour per scent (4%) 736 g wax · 64 g oil · 4 jars · 4 wicks
3 · Tests One test candle per scent, before production 15 g tester at 7.5% in the real jar 740 g wax · 60 g oil (testers) · 4 jars · 4 wicks
4 · Pour loss Wax on the jug and thermometer, top-ups, spills 5% on wax and production oil 994 g wax · 83.2 g oil
5 · Pack rounding Only listed sizes can be bought Cheapest listed packs covering the need See the bill of materials

Layers 2 and 4 are working assumptions, and they are the ones to replace with your own figures once you have run a batch or two. The series convention is "plan 3–5% extra for pour loss and test burns"; this page uses the top of that range because a first 100-candle run is usually the least efficient one you will ever pour. The reject allowance of one pour per scent is also an assumption, not a CSI measurement. If your first batches show fewer rejects, cut it; if more, raise it. How to include spillage, leftover fragrance, broken jars and rejects in production cost goes deeper on measuring them.

The bill of materials

Here is the full list, material by material, from the net need to the pack you actually order. The leftover column is what you still hold when the 100 candles are finished, before any of it is used for the next batch.

The wax need of 20,870 g rounds up to 21 kg. The pack mix does not change the price for CSI 464, which is ₹507.40 a kilo at 1, 5 and 10 kg. It would for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, where the 10 kg (₹5,999.00) is ₹9.00 dearer than two 5 kg packs; if you use the Chunks, buy 5 kg packs. Twelve spare wicks are a deliberate margin: wick sizing for a jar diameter is not published here, and if the test candles show the wick needs changing, a re-pour of a few candles should not need a new order. Standardising one jar is what makes a list like this repeatable.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 100-candle run is the point where many makers are told to "just buy the kilos". For these four oils that would be 4 kg of fragrance, 250 candles' worth, and for three of them (Blue Ocean, Dark Vanilla and Gilli Mitti) the kilo is within half a percent per gram of the 500 g. On our own prices the right purchase is the smallest mix of packs that covers 26 candles plus 5%. Buy the kilo after the 100 have sold.

Fragrance, scent by scent

Oil is the one line calculated per scent, because it is the one material that cannot move between scents. Each scent needs 26 pours × 16 g = 416 g, plus 5% for pour loss, 436.8 g. The table shows the cheapest combination of in-stock packs of 50 g and above that covers it. The 15 g testers are counted separately, because they are used up in the test candles.

Per scent · 26 pours × 16 g + 5% · cheapest in-stock pack mix · CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026
Oil to buy for each scent
Scent Pours Oil for pours With 5% loss Packs Cost Left after 26 pours
Blue Ocean 25 + 1 = 26 416 g 436.8 g 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹2,227.00 34 g
Cinnamon 25 + 1 = 26 416 g 436.8 g 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹2,690.40 34 g
Dark Vanilla 25 + 1 = 26 416 g 436.8 g 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹3,570.00 34 g
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) 25 + 1 = 26 416 g 436.8 g 50 g + 4 × 100 g ₹4,032.00 34 g
Total 104 1,664 g 1,747.2 g ₹12,519.40 136 g

All four come out the same way: four 100 g bottles and one 50 g, 450 g in all. The obvious alternative is a single 500 g, and for every one of these oils it costs more, because it is 50 g of oil you do not need. That holds even where the 500 g is cheaper per gram. Dark Vanilla's 500 g is ₹7.68 a gram against ₹7.90 at 100 g, yet it costs ₹3,840.00 against ₹3,570.00 for the 450 g mix. Blue Ocean is priced almost flat from 50 g to 1 kg (₹4.94 to ₹4.96 a gram), and Gilli Mitti is exactly ₹8.96 a gram at every size from 50 g up, so for them the 500 g is simply 50 g more oil. A per-gram break only saves money on grams you will use. None of this is a reason to buy a kilo for a 26-candle need.

1
Fresh · flat from 50 g
Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil
₹4.94 a gram at 50 g and ₹4.96 at 500 g and 1 kg — effectively one price from 50 g up. The cheapest scent of the four per candle. For a need of 436.8 g the 500 g is the simplest single pack, at no per-gram penalty.

Cinnamon Fragrance Oil
₹5.90 a gram at both 100 g and 500 g, dropping to ₹5.31 at 1 kg (10.0%). For this run the 450 g mix of 100 g and 50 g bottles is right; the kilo saving only matters once cinnamon candles are selling in the hundreds, which makes it a natural Diwali candidate to revisit.

Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) Fragrance Oil
₹8.96 a gram from 50 g to 1 kg without variation, and ₹9.33 at 15 g. The dearest of the four per candle. Because the price is flat, there is never a money reason to buy more than the run needs; buy for the candles in front of you.

The true cost of a sellable candle

A candle you cannot sell still used a jar, a wick, wax and oil. Its cost has to land somewhere, and it lands on the 100 you can.

The naive way to cost a candle is to price one: 184 g of wax, 16 g of oil, a wick and a jar. At 100 g oil rates and CSI 464 wax, that gives the figures in the second column below. Multiply by 25 per scent and add them up, and 100 candles appear to cost ₹28,090.16. The real list costs ₹32,440.22. The difference, ₹4,350.06, is testing, rejects, pour loss, spare jars and wicks, and pack rounding. Spread over the 100 you can sell, it is ₹43.50 a candle.

Per candle · CSI 464 · White Matte jar · Eco Thin C1 · oil at 100 g rate
One-candle cost vs true cost per sellable candle
₹
Blue Ocean — one candle ₹249.26
Cinnamon — one candle ₹264.46
Dark Vanilla — one candle ₹296.46
Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) — one candle ₹313.42
Average, one candle (naive) ₹280.90
Real list ÷ 100 sellable candles ₹324.40
Hidden cost per candle ₹43.50

Part of that hidden cost comes back. The leftover wax, oil, jars and wicks are real stock for the next batch, so the true cost of the second 100 candles will be lower. But you should price the first 100 as if it will not come back, because a new business cannot be sure there will be a second batch of the same scents. Material cost here excludes labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST. The true cost of a 200 g soy candle adds lid, label and packaging lines, and whether ₹180 of materials leaves margin at ₹499 shows how to test a price against it.

1
Write your net listCandles × wax per candle, candles × oil per candle, one jar and one wick per candle. Use your jar's fill weight; this page uses the series default of 200 g.
2
Add reject pours per scentStart with one extra pour per scent. After two batches, replace it with your measured reject rate.
3
Add test candlesOne per scent in the real jar before production. Buy the testers separately; they are not part of the production oil.
4
Add pour loss to wax and oil3–5% as a working assumption. Weigh the jug before and after a pour once, and you will know your own figure.
5
Round up to real packs, per materialWax and jars in the listed pack sizes; oil per scent in the cheapest combination of listed sizes. Check the product page for stock before you order.

What is left afterwards

When the 100 candles are poured and any rejects set aside, the list above leaves: up to 1,124 g of wax, less whatever pour loss took; 34 g of Blue Ocean, 34 g of Cinnamon, 34 g of Dark Vanilla, 34 g of Gilli Mitti (Patchouli) before pour loss; 2 jars; 12 wicks; and 12 wick stickers. That is not dead stock. Wax, jars and wicks move to the next batch of any scent. The oil leftovers are the start of each scent's next order, and the most useful input for deciding how much of each to buy next time.

The CSI principle
Order for the candles you will pour, not the candles you will sell.
Sellable candles are the goal. Pours are what consume material. Between them sit tests, rejects and pour loss, and a list that ignores them runs out five candles short, usually on the scent that is selling best.
The shortfall that hits the best seller. A list built as "one candle × 100" usually runs short on oil first, because oil is the only line split four ways. The scent that runs short is the one you poured most carefully and topped up most often, which is often the one you like best, and the one customers asked for. One extra pour per scent and 5% on the oil is cheap insurance. Buying for exactly 50 or for the next batch too looks at whether to carry more than that.

For the next batch, run the same layers with your measured figures. A lean inventory for the first three months covers pacing, how much wax to hold before marketing covers the wax buffer, and 500 custom candles scales the same method to a customer order.

100 candles is a sales target. 104 pours, 4 tests and 5% loss is the shopping list.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A 100-candle list is a good moment to sell kilos. This page buys the smallest pack mix that covers each scent, points out that the kilo of most of these oils is no cheaper per gram than the 500 g, and tells you to buy 5 kg packs rather than our 10 kg if you use the Chunks.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars and Eco wicks are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026; the 20-wick pack and wick stickers are from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Every quantity is computed from the stated assumptions, and each oil's pack mix is the cheapest in-stock combination covering its need.

The 200 g candle, 8% load, one reject pour per scent, 5% pour loss and two-jar breakage allowance are working assumptions, not measured CSI figures. Wick sizing for jar diameters is not published here; test before producing. Frequently asked questions

How much soy wax do I need for 100 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 18.4 kg net. With reject pours, four test candles and 5% pour loss it is 20,870 g, so buy 21 kg. For other sizes: wax per candle = candle weight × (1 − load).
How much fragrance oil do I need for 100 candles?
1,600 g net at 16 g per 200 g candle. With one reject pour per scent and 5% loss, about 1,747 g across four scents, plus 15 g testers. Bought as real packs, it costs ₹12,519.40 for the four scents here.
How many extra candles should I make to allow for rejects?
Start with one extra pour per scent, about 4% on a 100-candle run, as a working assumption. After two batches, use your own measured reject rate instead.
How much wastage should I allow in candle making?
Plan 3–5% extra wax and oil for pour loss and test burns. It is a working assumption; weigh your jug before and after a pour to measure your own figure.
What does it cost to make 100 candles?
On this list, ₹32,440.22 in materials for 100 sellable 200 g candles in four scents, or ₹324.40 per sellable candle. That excludes tools (₹1,475.00 if you need them), labour, labels, packaging, freight and GST.
Should I buy 1 kg fragrance oils for 100 candles?
Usually not. Each scent needs about 437 g for 26 pours. A kilo is 62 candles' worth, and for Blue Ocean, Dark Vanilla and Gilli Mitti the kilo is within half a percent per gram of the 500 g. Cinnamon's kilo does save 10.0% on the 100 g; buy it after the scent has sold.
Buy for pours, not for sales
