My 100 g Candle Has a Higher Cost per Gram than My 300 g Candle — Is That Normal When Jar, Wick and Packaging Costs Don't Scale Proportionally?
शेयर करना
Which costs don't scale? The wick, the container, the lid, the label and the box. On the 100 g candle they are ₹79.10, 46.8% of its cost. On the 300 g candle they are ₹160.90, only 37.4%.
What is the lowest cost per gram possible? The oil-and-wax floor: ₹0.90 a gram for 8% Lavender in CSI 464. Every candle sits above it by its fixed cost ÷ its fill weight. See the formula.
How should I price small candles? At a higher price per gram than large ones. To keep a 60% margin on materials and packaging, the 100 g candle needs at least ₹422.45 and the 300 g ₹1,076.35. Pricing by size.
The formula behind the curve
Oil and wax are bought by weight and used by weight, so their cost per gram of finished candle is fixed by the recipe. At an 8% load, each gram of candle holds 0.08 g of Lavender at ₹5.40 a gram (₹0.4320) and 0.92 g of CSI 464 at ₹0.5074 a gram (₹0.4668). Together that is ₹0.8988 per gram of candle, whether the candle weighs 85 g or 300 g. Everything else — the wick, the container, its lid, the label and the box — is counted per candle.
So the cost per gram of any candle is: ₹0.90 + (fixed cost per candle ÷ fill weight). Double the fill and the second part halves. That is the whole explanation. A 100 g candle with ₹79.10 of fixed cost adds ₹0.79 a gram on top of the floor. A 300 g candle with ₹160.90 adds ₹0.54. The floor is identical; the fixed cost per gram is not.
Five containers, costed
Here is the same recipe poured into five containers. Four are CSI listings with real prices. Only the golden tin has a published fill weight (85 g); the Yankee and Salsa fills are illustrative, so weigh one of yours filled to your line. The White Matte jar uses this series' 200 g working fill. The 300 g jar is an example, not a CSI listing, included because the question is about 300 g. Lid, label and box figures are examples except where the lid comes with the jar.
| Container | Fill | Oil + wax | Container | Lid | Wick + label + box | Total | Per gram |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Aluminium Tin | 85 g (published 85 g fill) | ₹76.40 | ₹30.00 | ₹0.00 (not stated — check listing) | ₹28.90 | ₹135.30 | ₹1.59 |
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml | 100 g (illustrative 100 g — weigh yours) | ₹89.88 | ₹47.20 | ₹0.00 (clear cap included) | ₹31.90 | ₹168.98 | ₹1.69 |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 160 g (illustrative 160 g — weigh yours) | ₹143.81 | ₹40.12 | ₹0.00 (golden lug cap included) | ₹35.90 | ₹219.83 | ₹1.37 |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 200 g (series working fill 200 g) | ₹179.76 | ₹70.80 | ₹18.00 (not listed — example ₹18.00) | ₹38.90 | ₹307.46 | ₹1.54 |
| 300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) | 300 g (example jar and price) | ₹269.64 | ₹95.00 | ₹20.00 (example ₹20.00) | ₹45.90 | ₹430.54 | ₹1.44 |
The per-gram column falls from ₹1.59 for the tin to ₹1.44 for the 300 g jar. Notice that it does not fall smoothly. The Salsa jar at 160 g costs ₹1.37 a gram, less than the White Matte at 200 g (₹1.54), because the Salsa jar is cheaper and brings its own lid. Container choice can beat size. That is why choosing a jar before scaling is a costing decision as well as a design one.
| Container | Fill | Fixed cost | Oil + wax | Fixed share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Aluminium Tin | 85 g | ₹58.90 | ₹76.40 | 43.5% |
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml | 100 g | ₹79.10 | ₹89.88 | 46.8% |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 160 g | ₹76.02 | ₹143.81 | 34.6% |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 200 g | ₹127.70 | ₹179.76 | 41.5% |
| 300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) | 300 g | ₹160.90 | ₹269.64 | 37.4% |
On the tin and the Yankee jar, fixed cost is close to half the candle (43.5% and 46.8%). On the 300 g example jar it is 37.4%. Oil is the opposite case: it scales, so a fragrance upgrade costs the same per gram of candle at every size. An oil ₹2 a gram dearer adds ₹16.00 to a 100 g candle and ₹48.00 to a 300 g one — ₹0.16 per gram of candle either way. The fragrance-load post and the dosage comparison cover oil choices in depth.
100 g against 300 g
| Line | 100 g · Yankee 130 ml | 300 g · example jar | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil (8% Lavender) | ₹43.20 | ₹129.60 | 3.00× |
| Wax (CSI 464) | ₹46.68 | ₹140.04 | 3.00× |
| Wick | ₹5.90 | ₹5.90 | 1.00× |
| Container | ₹47.20 | ₹95.00 | 2.01× |
| Lid | ₹0.00 (cap included) | ₹20.00 | — |
| Label | ₹8.00 | ₹8.00 | 1.00× |
| Box | ₹18.00 | ₹32.00 | 1.78× |
| Total | ₹168.98 | ₹430.54 | 2.55× |
| Per gram | ₹1.69 | ₹1.44 | 0.85× |
| Materials only (no label or box), per gram | ₹1.43 | ₹1.30 | 0.91× |
The oil and wax lines triple exactly, as they must. The wick and label do not move at all. The container and box rise, but by far less than three times. The result is a 300 g candle that costs 2.55 times as much as the 100 g for three times the candle. Even stripping out the label and box, the materials alone still cost more per gram in the small candle, because the jar and wick are fixed too.
The 300 g wick question
The comparison uses one Eco Thin C1 wick at ₹5.90 in every size to keep it fair. A wider 300 g jar may need a thicker wick or two wicks to melt fully; CSI does not publish wick sizing by jar diameter, so a burn test decides. The costing effect is small but real. With one Eco Thick C2 at ₹9.44 the 300 g candle costs ₹434.08 (₹1.45 a gram). With two Thin C1 wicks it costs ₹436.44 (₹1.45 a gram). Either way it stays well below the 100 g per gram.
Two wicks also add a second wick sticker and more setting time, so a two-wick design is a labour cost as well as a materials one. The 200 g true-cost post shows how to include those small lines. If you move to a larger or multi-wick jar, test before you print a price, and cost it at the wick you actually end up using.
Pricing by size
The practical answer to a higher cost per gram is a higher price per gram. Here is the minimum price each size needs to keep 60% of its price after materials and packaging. That target is illustrative; choose your own, and remember that courier, fees and labour still have to come out of what remains.
| Container | Fill | Cost | Minimum price at 60% | Minimum ₹ per gram | Markup at that price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Aluminium Tin | 85 g | ₹135.30 | ₹338.25 | ₹3.98 | 150.0% |
| Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml | 100 g | ₹168.98 | ₹422.45 | ₹4.22 | 150.0% |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar | 160 g | ₹219.83 | ₹549.58 | ₹3.43 | 150.0% |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 200 g | ₹307.46 | ₹768.65 | ₹3.84 | 150.0% |
| 300 g jar (example — not a CSI listing) | 300 g | ₹430.54 | ₹1,076.35 | ₹3.59 | 150.0% |
A 60% gross margin is a 150% markup on cost; the two numbers describe the same price from different ends. Look at the fifth column. The 100 g candle needs ₹4.22 a gram against ₹3.59 for the 300 g, 18% more per gram just to keep the same margin — and that is before per-order packing and courier, which weigh far more heavily on a small, cheap candle. A higher price per gram is usually easier to justify on a small size sold as a taster, gift or add-on than on a large candle. The risk is a small candle that looks expensive for what it is, which is where cutting fixed cost comes in. The affordable-candle post tests whether a small size still makes sense once its fixed costs are counted, and the ₹499/₹799/₹1,199 post compares whole tiers.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell every container on this page, and a longer size range means more jar orders. This page still tells you that small sizes carry heavy fixed costs and should be added only when they do a job, because a range of underpriced small candles hurts the businesses that buy from us.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and White Matte jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tin, Yankee and Salsa jar prices are from CSI's catalogue for this series. Per-gram figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.
The 85 g tin fill is published; the Yankee (100 g) and Salsa (160 g) fills are illustrative, and the 300 g jar, its price and its lid are examples, not CSI listings. Labels, boxes and the White Matte lid are example figures. Whether the golden tin's listing includes a lid is not stated in our data. Wick sizing is not published; test burn every size.
