Scaling · Recalculating costs
Most makers expect materials to get much cheaper per candle at ten times the volume. At listed prices they barely do. What changes at 1,000 units is everything around the materials: hours per candle, print-run prices, equipment and, very often, the price the candle is sold at.
₹0.17
the change in material cost per candle between 100 and 1,000 units in the worked example (₹262.28 → ₹262.11) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I recalculate candle costs when scaling from 100 to 1,000? Line by line. Re-price each material at the pack you will actually buy, recalculate labour hours per candle, get fresh packaging quotes at the new run length, add any new equipment spread over its life, and then recompute margin at the price you will actually sell the 1,000 at.

Do raw materials get cheaper at 1,000 units? Very little at CSI's listed prices. In the example the materials go from ₹262.28 to ₹262.11. The only moves are the oil's 500 g-to-1 kg step and, below 50 jars, the jar pack. Wax, wicks and jars are otherwise flat per unit.

Then why do my margins change? Because the non-material lines move, in both directions. In the example, labour and packaging (example figures) fall by ₹33.50 a candle, while a melter adds ₹1.77. If the 1,000 sell at a wholesale ₹399 instead of ₹799 retail, gross margin drops from 61.2% to 22.3%.

Why does my small-run cost per candle look higher than it is? Usually because you divided the purchase bill by the candles made. Pack sizes leave remainders, such as spare wax and stickers, which are stock carried forward, not cost. Cost the candle on what it consumes. See consumption vs purchase.
The short answer
Materials: 180 g fill (illustrative) at 8%: Vanilla Bean 14.98 g, CSI 468 172.22 g, Salsa jar with cap, Eco wick, sticker = ₹262.28 at 100 units, ₹262.11 at 1,000.
Examples: Labour ₹18.00 → ₹13.50, label ₹10.00 → ₹4.00, box ₹45.00 → ₹22.00, melter +₹1.77. All examples to replace with your own quotes.
Margin at ₹799: 100 units: cost ₹341.78, gross margin 57.2%, markup 133.8%. 1,000 units: cost ₹309.88, gross margin 61.2%, markup 157.8%.

Dark bars are 100 units and light bars 1,000 units, per candle. The four CSI material lines are the same length at both volumes except the oil, which moves by a few paise. The lines that change are the ones marked as examples: labour, printed packaging and new equipment. Your own versions of those lines decide how your margin moves.
Straight answer
My candle formula is profitable at 100 units but margins change at 1,000 units — how should I recalculate raw-material, labour and packaging costs when scaling?
Recalculate each line on its own, because they behave differently. Materials: re-price every input at the pack you will buy for 1,000. At CSI's listed prices they barely move. Our example is an illustrative 180 g fill of Vanilla Bean at 8% in Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, poured into a 200 ml Salsa jar with its lug cap. It costs ₹262.28 in materials at 100 units and ₹262.11 at 1,000. Only the oil's move from a 1 kg + 500 g mix to kilo packs changes anything. Also cost the candle on what it consumes, not on the purchase bill divided by units, because pack remainders are stock, not cost. Labour: re-time the work at batch scale. Packaging: get new quotes at the new run length, because printed items usually fall per unit. Equipment: add any melter or tools spread over their life. With our example figures, the total falls from ₹341.78 to ₹309.88. Then check the selling price, which is where most 1,000-unit margins are really lost. At ₹799 retail, gross margin rises from 57.2% to 61.2%. Sold wholesale at ₹399, it falls to 22.3%.
One line: scale moves labour, packaging and price — not the wax and oil, at listed prices.
The one container in the catalogue with a clear per-unit step is the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap: ₹200.60 for 5 (₹40.12 each), then ₹1,475.00 for 50 and ₹2,950.00 for 100 (₹29.50 each), lid included. From 50 jars up, the price is the same at 100 units as at 1,000.

Re-price the materials at the new packs

The instinct is that ten times the volume must mean a cheaper candle. On a listed catalogue, the materials mostly say otherwise.

Take the candle apart and re-price each input at the pack size each volume would buy. Our example is a premium candle: an illustrative 180 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar (the jar's fill weight is not published, so weigh a filled jar of your own wax), at an 8% load. That is 14.4 g of oil and 165.6 g of wax, with a 4% allowance on both for pour loss and tests (a working assumption; plan 3–5%). The wax is Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468. No fragrance ceiling for it is quoted in our data, so 8% here is a working load within the 6–10% range commonly used for tests. Check the wax's product page or ask on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum.

Materials per candle ₹262.28 — ₹262.11 —

The materials move by ₹0.17 per candle, all of it in the oil. At 100 units the 1.5 kg of Vanilla Bean comes as a 1 kg plus a 500 g, at ₹7.66 a gram on average. At 1,000 it comes as kilos at ₹7.65. Everything else is flat. CSI 468 costs ₹637.00 a kilo from 5 kg upward (a 2.0% step from ₹650.00 at 1 kg, which both volumes clear). The Salsa jar is ₹29.50 at both 50 and 100 per pack, and wicks are ₹5.90 at every pack size. This is typical of CSI's listed catalogue: price steps are at the small end, and above them prices are linear. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published, so do not pencil one into your 1,000-unit costing until you have it in writing.

Where a real price step does exist, use it
A few items do get cheaper per unit with pack size. Among the oils, 24 show a 1 kg saving of 5% or more against 100 g (for example British Rose 10.3% and Mango Coconut 20.7%). Natural Soy Pearl Wax drops from ₹450.00 to ₹424.80 a kilo at 5 kg. The Salsa jar drops from ₹40.12 to ₹29.50 at 50. If your formula uses one of these, re-price at the step. For everything else, your 100-unit material cost is your 1,000-unit material cost.

Consumption cost, not purchase cost

Here is the most common reason a maker thinks their small-run candle costs more than it does. They divide the purchase bill by the candles made. At 100 units the example's purchases total ₹28,066.00, which is ₹280.66 a candle. At 1,000 they total ₹2,67,250.00, or ₹267.25 a candle. That looks like a ₹13.41 saving from scale. It is not.

Purchases vs what the candles actually used · CSI prices
Where the "small-run penalty" really goes
100 units 1,000 units
Purchase bill ₹28,066.00 ₹2,67,250.00
Purchase ÷ units ₹280.66 ₹267.25
Wax bought vs used 20.00 kg vs 17.22 kg 180.00 kg vs 172.22 kg
Oil bought vs used 1,500.00 g vs 1,497.60 g 15,000.00 g vs 14,976.00 g
Stickers bought vs used 120 vs 100 1,000 vs 1,000
Consumption cost per candle ₹262.28 ₹262.11

The gap is remainders. At 100 units, 2.78 kg of wax and 20 stickers are left over, which is stock for the next run, not a cost of this one. Scale shrinks remainders as a share of the purchase, which makes it look as if the candle got cheaper. The honest per-candle cost is what each candle consumes, and on that basis the two runs differ by a few paise. Keep the remainders on your stock sheet, as I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production? describes, and never let them inflate a quote.

Pricing a 1,000-unit quote off a padded 100-unit cost. A maker who costed the 100-unit run at purchase ÷ units, ₹280.66 here, quotes a wholesale buyer on that basis and loses the order to a competitor who costed at consumption. Or the reverse happens. They assume scale saves 15% on materials, quote low, and discover the materials cost exactly what they did before. Cost both runs on consumption at real pack prices, and the surprise disappears.

The lines that really move

If materials hold still, the margin moves through everything around them. None of these lines are CSI prices. CSI does not list labels, boxes, labour or courier, and we will not guess them for you. Below they are clearly labelled examples to show the method. Replace every one with your own figures.

Total per candle ₹341.78 ₹309.88 Moves ₹31.90

Labour usually falls per candle at scale, but less than makers hope. Melting, pouring and wicking get faster in larger batches, while labelling, quality checks and packing stay roughly per unit. In the example, 100 candles take 12 hours and 1,000 take 90 hours at an example ₹150 an hour. Time a real batch before you believe any figure, including ours. If scaling means hiring help, add it here at the helper's actual rate, not at the value you put on your own hour.

Printed packaging is where scale most often helps, because printers price by run length. The example label falls from ₹10.00 to ₹4.00 and the box from ₹45.00 to ₹22.00. Those are illustrations of a common pattern, not market prices. Ask two printers for quotes at both quantities. The one packaging line CSI does list, tissue at ₹6.50 a sheet, does not change with volume at all.

Equipment is the line that appears only at scale. Pouring 1,000 candles from a hob and a jug is slow. Many makers add a melter, such as the 10 kg Electric Wax Melter at ₹21,240.00. Spread over an example 12,000 candles (a year at 1,000 a month), it adds ₹1.77 a candle. CSI does not publish melter throughput, so size it on your own batch timing.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell 10 kg wax bags, 1 kg oils and 1,000-wick packs, and it would be convenient to tell you they make your candle cheaper. At our listed prices they mostly do not. The CSI 468 you buy for 1,000 candles costs the same per kilo as for 100, and so do the wicks and jars. Your margin at scale will come from labour, packaging and price discipline. Bigger packs from us save you reorders, not rupees.

Margin at 100 and at 1,000

Now put the cost against the price, and use both measures correctly. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price, the share of the selling price you keep. Markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost, how much you add on top of cost. They describe the same gap, and mixing them up is a classic pricing error.

Costs from the table above (CSI materials + example lines) · selling prices illustrative
Where the 1,000-unit margin is really decided
Scenario Price Cost per candle Gross margin (on price) Markup (on cost)
100 units, retail ₹799.00 ₹341.78 57.2% 133.8%
1,000 units, retail ₹799.00 ₹309.88 61.2% 157.8%
1,000 units, wholesale (example ₹399) ₹399.00 ₹309.88 22.3% 28.8%

This is usually the answer to "my margins change at 1,000". Selling 1,000 units of one candle rarely happens at full retail price. It happens through stockists, corporate gifting or bulk orders, all at a lower price. The cost side improves by ₹31.90 with our example figures. The price side can fall by hundreds. Before you scale, decide what the 1,000 will sell for, and recompute margin at that price. I Need to Give a Bulk Candle Price for 100, 500 and 1,000 Pieces — How Do I Calculate Quantity Discounts Without Accidentally Eliminating My Margin? and My Customer Wants a Lower Price for 1,000 Candles — Which Costs Actually Decrease with Volume and Which Costs Stay Almost the Same? work through volume pricing and which costs actually fall when a buyer asks for a discount.

The CSI principle
Recalculate each line. Then recalculate the price.
A candle's cost at scale is five separate stories: materials (flat at listed prices), labour (falls a little), packaging (often falls), equipment (appears) and remainders (not a cost). Its margin at scale is a sixth story, the price. Get the price wrong and no cost saving will rescue the margin.

The recalculation, step by step

1
Fix the kitFill weight, load, wax, oil, jar, lid, wick and sticker. Weigh a filled jar if the fill weight is not published, as with the Salsa jar.
2
Re-price materials at the packs each volume buysUse listed prices. Note any real steps, such as the Salsa jar at 50, CSI 468 at 5 kg and the 24 oils with a 1 kg break. Do not assume a discount beyond the listed packs until it is quoted.
3
Cost on consumptionGrams used × price per gram, plus one of each piece item. Keep pack remainders on the stock sheet, not in the cost.
4
Re-time labour at batch sizeTime a real batch at the new scale. Split it into batch-scaled tasks (melt, pour) and per-unit tasks (label, pack), and price it at the rate you will actually pay.
5
Re-quote packaging at the new run lengthTwo printers, both quantities. Add lids, labels and boxes as separate lines.
6
Add new fixed itemsMelter, extra moulds or pouring jugs, spread over a realistic number of candles.
7
Recompute margin at the real selling priceGross margin on price and markup on cost, at retail and at whatever price the 1,000 will actually sell for.

Two final checks before you commit. First, test a batch at the new scale. A 10 kg melt behaves differently from a 1 kg pot, and one full-size test batch costs far less than 1,000 candles that need reworking. Second, re-run the costing with your own labour and packaging figures, not ours. The method is the useful part of this page. The example numbers only show the shape.

Ten times the candles does not make ten times cheaper candles. It makes ten times more reason to price each line honestly.
At 100 units you learn what your candle costs. At 1,000 you learn what you charged for it.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows that our own bigger packs barely change your material cost per candle at listed prices, which is not the usual message from a supplier, and it points to labour, packaging and selling price as the lines that decide your margin at scale.

Every oil, wax, jar, tissue and melter price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24–25 September 2026. The Eco wick and wick sticker prices come from the same pull. Per-candle figures, remainders and margins are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

Labour hours and rate, label and box prices, the ₹399 wholesale price, the 12,000-candle equipment life and the 180 g fill are examples to replace with your own figures. For a materials quote at your volume, GST invoicing or documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

does candle cost per unit go down with volume
Materials barely do at listed prices. In our example they go from ₹262.28 at 100 units to ₹262.11 at 1,000. Labour per candle and printed packaging usually fall. Equipment adds a little. The biggest change is often the lower selling price that comes with volume.
how to calculate candle cost for bulk production
Cost each candle on what it consumes: grams of wax and oil × price per gram at the packs you will buy, plus one of each jar, lid, wick and sticker. Add labour timed at batch scale, packaging quoted at the new run length and equipment spread over its life.
difference between markup and margin for candles
Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. For a ₹309.88 candle at ₹799, gross margin is 61.2% and markup is 157.8%. Always say which one you mean.
why is my candle cost higher for small batches
Often it is not. The purchase bill divided by units includes pack remainders such as spare wax and stickers, which are stock carried forward. Cost the candle on consumption, and small and large runs usually differ by very little at listed prices.
is 1 kg fragrance oil cheaper than 500 g
For most CSI oils, only slightly or not at all. Vanilla Bean is ₹7.68/g at 500 g and ₹7.65/g at 1 kg. Twenty-four oils show a 1 kg saving of 5% or more against 100 g. Check your oil's own price table.
how much does a candle melter add to cost per candle
Its price divided by the candles it will pour over its life. A ₹21,240.00 10 kg melter spread over an example 12,000 candles adds ₹1.77 a candle. Use your own expected volume and life.

The 8% load is a working load within the 6–10% range commonly used for tests, since no ceiling for CSI 468 is quoted here. The 4% allowance on wax and oil, labour hours and ₹150 hourly rate, ₹10.00/₹4.00 label, ₹45.00/₹22.00 box, 12,000-candle melter life and ₹399 wholesale price are examples.
