Temperature, Mixing & Cure · When to Reformulate
Waiting is only useful while the candle is still improving. Once the gain between two checkpoints is small and the score is still below your pass mark, more days rarely rescue it. Stop waiting, and change one thing at a time.
1 point
working threshold: if the hot-throw score gains less than this from 7 to 14 days and still fails, stop waiting · a rule you set, not a CSI specification
Quick answers — read this first
My candle has cured two weeks and is still weak. Should I keep waiting? Only if it is still improving. Compare the 14-day score with the 7-day score. If it gained less than about a point on a 1–10 scale and still fails, stop waiting and reformulate. If it gained more, allow one more checkpoint at 21 days.

What should I check before reformulating? That the test was valid. The melt pool should reach the jar wall, the test should be blind, in the same room, with an aired room and a rested nose. A bad test makes a good candle look weak. What to test before rejecting an oil lists every variable.

What do I change first? One variable at a time, in this order: wick and melt pool, load within the wax maker's ceiling, wax, and finally the oil. A six-candle round can test load, wick and an alternative oil together. See the reformulation round.

Why not keep waiting just in case? Because the new candles need their own cure. Every week you wait before pouring them is a week added to the fix. A 40-candle batch at 8% in Vanilla Bean holds ₹12,532.64 of materials. The round costs ₹2,869.40, so run it in parallel with any extra wait.
The short answer
Decision rule: Valid test? → gain from 7 d to 14 d ≥ 1 point? Wait to 21 d. Gain below 1 point and still failing? Stop and reformulate. Still failing at 21 d? Stop. All working rules, not specifications.
Order of changes: Wick and melt pool → load (within 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464) → wax → oil. Change one thing per candle, and include a fresh control.
Cost: 200 g Vanilla Bean candle in Chunks: ₹313.32 at 8%, ₹342.52 at 10%. Six-candle round with an alternative oil and two wicks: ₹2,869.40.
Stop waiting or keep waiting? A checkpoint decision rule Weak at 14 days below your pass mark 1. Was the test valid? full melt pool, blind, same room yes 2. Gain from 7 d to 14 d? 1 point or more on 1–10 no Fix the test first then re-score yes Wait to 21 d one more check no Stop waiting reformulate now Still failing at 21 d? stop and reformulate Reformulate one variable at a time: wick and melt pool → load within the wax maker's ceiling → wax → oil. Start the new candles now, in parallel with any extra wait. Ages, the 1-point threshold and the 21-day stop are working rules, not specifications. Set your own and write them down.
The rule in one picture. Every threshold here is a working choice for a small bench test: a 1–10 hot-throw score, a one-point gain and a 21-day stop. CSI publishes no cure data for any oil, so no universal figure exists. What matters is that you set the rule before you test and follow it afterwards, instead of waiting indefinitely in hope.
Straight answer
My candle has been curing for two weeks and still has weak hot throw — at what point should I stop waiting and reformulate it?
Stop waiting when the candle has stopped improving but not yet passed. Use a rule you set in advance rather than hope. First, check that the test itself was fair. The melt pool should reach the jar wall, and the burn should be blind, in the same room, with the room aired and your nose rested. Then compare the 14-day score with the 7-day score on a 1–10 scale. If the candle gained a point or more, allow one more checkpoint at 21 days. If it gained less than a point and still fails your pass mark, stop waiting and reformulate now. If it is still failing at 21 days, stop there too. Those ages and the one-point threshold are working rules, not specifications, since CSI publishes no cure data for any oil. When you reformulate, change one variable at a time: the wick and melt pool first, then the load within the wax maker's ceiling, then the wax, then the oil. Start the new candles straight away, because they need their own cure. A six-candle round in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks that tests load, wick and an alternative oil costs ₹2,869.40 at CSI prices.
One line: Waiting only helps while the score is still climbing. Once it flattens below your pass mark, the formula has to change.
The scenario on this page is a Vanilla Bean candle at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks that is still weak at 14 days. The reformulation round needs 72 g of it, and the 100 g at ₹790.00 covers that. The alternative oil, Dark Vanilla Oud, needs 32 g, which the 50 g at ₹320.00 covers.

First: was the test valid?

Before you change the candle, make sure it was the candle that failed and not the test.

A surprising number of "still weak at two weeks" candles are fine. They were tested in a way that could not show it. The checks below take an afternoon. They cost nothing, and they can save a round of reformulation. Run them on a candle from the same pour, at the same age, before you decide anything.

General candle-making practice · checks to run before changing the formula
Five reasons a good candle scores badly
Check What goes wrong How to tell What to do
Melt pool The wick never melts the wax out to the glass, so less fragrance is released After a long burn, a ring of solid wax remains at the wall Treat it as a wick problem first; see load versus wick
Room and airflow A large room, open windows or a ceiling fan dilute the scent Scores change a lot from room to room Use one standard test room; see testing for Indian rooms and fans
Smell fatigue Your nose adapts within minutes The candle seems strong on entering, then fades Leave, air, re-enter; see fatigue versus weak throw
Expectation You know which candle is the problem Scores shift when the candles are blind-coded Have someone else code the candles
Batch spread This candle got less oil than the batch average Other candles from the pour score differently Run the sampled-pour check in first and last candles differ

If any of those checks fails, fix it and re-score before reformulating. If they all pass, the weakness is real and the question is whether time will fix it. That is what the next section answers.

The checkpoint decision rule

The rule works on the change between checkpoints, not only the score. A candle that went from 3 to 5 between 7 and 14 days is still moving, and another week may carry it over the line. A candle that went from 4 to 4.5 has largely stopped. Waiting another fortnight is hope, not a plan. Here is the rule written out. Every number in it is a working choice you can change, as long as you set it before you test.

Working decision rule · 1–10 hot-throw score · pass mark set in advance (6 used here)
What to do at the 14-day checkpoint
7-day score 14-day score Gain Verdict Action
4 6 +2 Passes at 14 d Confirm at 21 d; record 14 d as the checkpoint
3 5 +2 Failing but still improving Wait for 21 d; start a reformulation round in parallel
4 4.5 +0.5 Failing and flattening Stop waiting. Reformulate now
5 4 −1 Failing and declining Stop waiting. Check storage and top-note loss, then reformulate
5 5.5 at 14 d, 5.5 at 21 d 0 Plateaued below pass Stop. The formula needs to change

The third and fourth rows are the ones this page is about. A flat or falling score below the pass mark means the candle has reached roughly what this formula can do in your system. The general mechanism behind cure, soy wax settling around the oil, is covered in why curing affects fragrance performance. It improves a candle that is right. It does not turn a wrong formula into a right one. Where the gain has not flattened yet, the plateau test shows how to find where it does.

Set a hard stop
Pick an age beyond which you will not wait, whatever the trend. 21 days is a common working choice, and some makers use 28. Write it on your test sheet before the first burn. Without a hard stop, a slowly improving candle can keep you waiting for weeks, and a season can pass while you do.
Cure improves a candle that is right. It does not turn a wrong formula into a right one.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia
The comparison that fools makers most. "The new candle at 7 days already beats the old one at 14 days, so the new formula wins." It may, or the old candle may have been stored somewhere warm, tested in a different room or poured unevenly. A formula can only be judged against a control of the same age from the same pour session. That is why the round below re-pours the original formula as candle A instead of reusing the old two-week candle.

The cost of waiting

Waiting feels free, but it is not. Suppose you have already poured a 40-candle batch of the Vanilla Bean formula at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, in White Matte jars with Eco Thin C1 wicks. Each candle holds 16 g of oil at ₹7.90 a gram (₹126.40) plus a base of ₹186.92, which is ₹313.32 of material. The batch holds ₹12,532.64. If the formula fails, some or all of that has to be sold as a lesser product, reworked or written off. Every week you spend waiting before starting a fix pushes the fix back by a week, because the new candles need their own cure.

Vanilla Bean ₹790.00 / 100 g · Chunks ₹599.00 / kg · wicks ₹5.90 / ₹9.44 · jar ₹70.80
Waiting in series versus testing in parallel
Plan Day 14 Day 21 Day 35 Earliest verdict on a fix
Wait, then reformulate Candle weak; decide to wait Still weak; pour round 1 Round 1 reaches 14 d Day 35
Reformulate in parallel Candle weak; pour round 1 now Original at 21 d; round 1 at 7 d Round 1 already past 14 d (day 28) Day 28
Difference One week sooner, for the same ₹2,869.40

The round itself costs ₹2,869.40, which is about 22.9% of the materials in the batch at risk. Running it in parallel gets you a verdict a week earlier, and if the original passes at 21 days after all, you have lost six test candles and gained data on load and wick. Material costs here exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The simplest thing for us to say is "try a stronger oil", and sell you a new one. The oil is the last thing to change. A wick that does not reach the glass or a load well below what the formula needs will make any oil look weak, including an expensive replacement. The round below changes the wick and the load before it changes the oil, and it tests the alternative oil in 50 g, not 1 kg.

The reformulation round

Six candles, poured the same day, burned at the same ages. One variable changed per candle, plus a fresh control.

The round below changes load, wick and oil in a small, readable grid. Every candle is 200 g, in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, in a White Matte jar, poured in one session. Load follows CSI's convention: a share of finished weight, so oil = 200 g × load. At 10% the candle holds 20 g of oil and 180 g of wax. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% by the wax maker, so 10% stays inside the stated maximum. That is a formulation limit, not a target. Candle A is a fresh pour of the current formula. It gives you a same-age control, which the old two-week candle cannot be.

Weigh by candle, not by batchWith two loads and two oils, weigh each candle's oil and wax separately into its own jug: 16 g + 184 g, or 20 g + 180 g. Total Vanilla Bean 72 g, Dark Vanilla Oud 32 g, wax 1,096 g.

Heat and add oil the same way for all sixFollow the wax maker's instructions for the fragrance-addition temperature, and use the same temperature, stir routine and timing for every candle. The round only works if load, wick and oil are the only differences.
3
Wick with stickers, centre, labelUse Thin C1 on A, B and E and Thick C2 on C, D and F. Label each base with the candle letter and the pour date.
4
Cure together, test at 7 and 14 daysStore all six on one shelf. Burn at the same working checkpoints you used for the original, blind-coded, in your standard room. Record whether the melt pool reaches the wall on every candle.
5
Apply the same ruleA candle that passes at 14 days and holds at 21 days is your new formula. If none pass, the next round changes the wax. Soy versus paraffin perception covers what a wax change can do.

Vanilla Bean Fragrance Oil
The oil in the scenario. The round uses 72 g of it across four candles. At ₹7.90 a gram at 100 g, the step from 8% to 10% adds ₹31.60 of oil per 200 g candle, which is the cost the load test is weighing up. The 1 kg is ₹7.65 a gram, so the kilo saves little. Buy it once the formula is settled.

A different vanilla composition, with a woody depth, and cheaper per gram than Vanilla Bean at every size. It is included as a candidate worth testing, not a claim that it throws better. CSI publishes no throw data for any oil. The round uses 32 g, so the 50 g is enough.

The spare jars and wicks are there on purpose. If candle D, at 10% with a Thick C2, burns too hot or soots, the natural next candle is 9% with a Thick C2, and you will want to pour it straight away. CSI does not assign wick sizes to jar diameters, so these two wicks are a starting pair for a burn test, not a recommendation for your jar.

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. A round poured this week reaches its 14-day checkpoint in mid-October, which still leaves time to pour festive stock with the fixed formula. Leave it another two weeks and it will not. For production quantities of whichever formula wins, bulk quotes, GST invoicing and IFRA documentation are on WhatsApp.

Reading the round

Read the round as a set of comparisons, each against candle A, the same-age control. B against A isolates load. C against A isolates wick. D shows whether load and wick together do more than either alone. E against A shows whether a different oil does better in your current system, and F against E does the same for the wick. If A itself passes at 14 days, the original formula was never the problem. The earlier candle was mis-tested, badly stored or unevenly mixed, and the validity checks above are where to look.

Working interpretation · confirm any winner with a second pour before production
What each outcome points to
Outcome Most likely reading Next step
C passes, B does not The wick was limiting the melt pool Adopt the wick change at the original load; confirm with a second pour
B passes, C does not The formula needed more oil in this system Adopt 10%; cost is ₹29.20 more per candle
Only D passes Both load and wick were limiting Adopt both, and check for sweating at 10%
E or F passes, A–D do not This oil suits your system better Test E/F against a second jar size before switching
Nothing passes The wax or the whole concept needs rethinking Change the wax next; see the full variable list
A passes The original test was the problem Standardise testing; see same cure age for fair comparison
The CSI principle
Decide the rule before the burn, then follow it.
The hard part of reformulation is not the chemistry. It is admitting that a formula has stopped improving. Set your pass mark, your minimum gain and your hard stop in writing before the first checkpoint, and let the numbers make the call.

Whatever wins, record it as a new formula with its own checkpoint. Then run the cure ladder on it before you rely on that checkpoint for production. Do all fragrances need the same cure covers the ladder, and a repeatable mixing and curing protocol shows how to lock the winning formula into a written procedure.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. When a candle stays weak, the most profitable advice for us is a new oil in a large pack. This page changes the wick and load before the oil, and it tests the alternative oil in 50 g.

Oil and wax prices come from CSI's live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Jar prices are as verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, and wick prices, including the Thick C2 10-pack now in stock, are from the 25 September pull. Per-candle and batch costs are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals.

The 1–10 score, the pass mark of 6, the one-point gain threshold and the 7-, 14- and 21-day checkpoints are working rules, not specifications. CSI publishes no cure-time, throw or dosage data for any oil. For MSDS or IFRA documents, or help planning a round, message +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What if my candle still has no hot throw after 2 weeks?
Check the test first: melt pool to the wall, blind scoring, one room, rested nose. If the test was fair, compare the 14-day score with the 7-day score. If it gained less than about a point and still fails, stop waiting and reformulate.
Will my candle's hot throw improve after 3 weeks?
It may, if it was still improving between 7 and 14 days. If the score had already flattened, a third week rarely rescues it. Set a hard stop, such as 21 days, before you start.
Should I increase fragrance load or change the wick first?
Check the wick first. If the melt pool does not reach the glass, more oil will not fix it. A round that changes each separately, with a same-age control, shows which one matters. See load versus wick size.
How do I reformulate a weak soy candle?
Change one variable at a time: wick and melt pool, then load within the wax maker's ceiling (13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464), then wax, then oil. Pour a fresh control at the same time so every comparison is at the same age.
Is it the fragrance oil or my candle that's the problem?
Test the oil last. If a wick or load change fixes the candle, the oil was fine. If an alternative oil passes in the same system while the original does not, that points to the oil. CSI publishes no throw data, so the round is the evidence.
Can I pour a new test batch while the old one is still curing?
Yes, and you should. The new candles need their own cure, so pouring them now brings your verdict a week or more closer. If the original passes after all, you have lost only a few test candles.
Stop waiting, start testing
Check the test, apply the rule, and pour a six-candle round today instead of waiting another fortnight.
