My Candle Uses 12% Fragrance but Still Has Average Hot Throw — Should I Stop Increasing Load and Test a Different Fragrance Oil?
शेयर करना
What is the extra oil costing me? On a worked 200 g candle with your oil at ₹4,400.00 a kilo, each point of load costs ₹7.70 net of the wax it replaces. 12% → 10% saves ₹15.40 a candle (₹15,400.00 per 1,000 candles); 12% → 9% saves ₹23.10 (₹23,100.00 per 1,000).
Should I test a different oil? Yes, but second. First rule out the wick, wax and cure with a three-candle pre-check (₹1,167.00): your oil at 10% with the next wick up. Then run the swap test: same wax, wick and jar, two or three oils in your family at 8% and 10%, against your 12% control.
What is it worth? At 300 candles a month (worked example; use your own), 12% → 10% is worth ₹4,620.00 a month, ₹55,440.00 a year. The 18-candle swap test costs ₹6,400.62 and pays back in about 1.4 months even if only your own oil at 10% passes.
The money in the last two or three points
The title gives one number, 12%. Here is a worked example around it: a 200 g gourmand candle (load as a share of total weight: 24 g of oil and 176 g of wax at 12%), with every unit price labelled as yours to replace. None is a CSI price or a claim about your supplier.
| Line | Quantity | Unit price (yours) | ₹ per candle | % of cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil | 24 g | ₹4,400.00 per kg | ₹105.60 | 37.2% |
| Soy wax | 176 g | ₹550.00 per kg | ₹96.80 | 34.1% |
| Jar with lid | 1 | ₹62.00 | ₹62.00 | 21.8% |
| Wick | 1 | ₹9.00 | ₹9.00 | 3.2% |
| Label, dye, sticker | 1 set | ₹10.60 | ₹10.60 | 3.7% |
| Total | 200 g | — | ₹284.00 | 100.0% |
Fragrance is the biggest line, and at 12% it is a bigger share than it needs to be. Each point of load on a 200 g candle is 2 g of oil at ₹4.40 a gram replacing 2 g of wax at ₹0.55 a gram: ₹7.70 a candle, net. So the cost of stopping at 10% instead of 12% is easy to price, and so is the cost of going back to 9%.
| Change | Oil per candle | Oil per 1,000 candles | Net saving per candle | Per 1,000 candles | Candle cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Now: 12% | 24 g = ₹105.60 | 24 kg = ₹1,05,600.00 | — | — | ₹284.00 |
| 12% → 11% | 22 g | 22 kg = ₹96,800.00 | ₹7.70 | ₹7,700.00 | ₹276.30 |
| 12% → 10% | 20 g = ₹88.00 | 20 kg = ₹88,000.00 | ₹15.40 | ₹15,400.00 | ₹268.60 |
| 12% → 9% | 18 g = ₹79.20 | 18 kg = ₹79,200.00 | ₹23.10 | ₹23,100.00 | ₹260.90 |
At 10% fragrance falls to 32.8% of a ₹268.60 candle. The point is not that 10% is right for your oil; it is that the 11th and 12th points cost ₹15,400.00 per 1,000 candles, and an average-throwing candle says they are not earning it. Whether an 8% candle with a better oil can out-throw a 10% one is the 10% against 8% post; the money of 10% → 8% at volume is the 1,000-candle savings post.
Why a higher load can fail to raise hot throw at all is the science of strong cold throw, no hot throw; what sweating at 12% means for your wax is the 12% sweating post.
The ceiling check: where 12% sits
Two maxima govern every candle: the wax page's and the oil page's. The lower one wins, and neither is a target. Here is where 12% stands against CSI's stated figures (formulation limits as the pages state them, not regulatory limits).
| Material | Page states | 12% of total is | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" (basis not stated) | 13.64% of wax weight | over on any reading |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | "up to 13% fragrance load capacity"; FAQ "13% of total wax weight" | 13.64% of wax weight | inside on a total-weight reading, past 13% on a wax-weight reading; 11.5% is inside both |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | up to 13% | 13.64% of wax weight | as Chunks |
| Roasted Coffee, Dark Vanilla | "candles (6-10%)" | 2 points over | over the oil page |
| CSI oil pages with a stated candle load | 46 of 48 state a maximum below 12% | — | only Cinnamon Vanilla and Japanese Cherry Blossom state 13% |
So, unless your oil's own page states more than 12% and your wax states it clearly on a total-weight basis, 12% is past at least one stated limit. Read your oil's page (if it states no candle load, work inside the wax ceiling), and treat any supplier's "our wax holds 12%" as their figure, to be tested, not obeyed: the supplier-says-12% post explains why the maximum is not the strongest setting. The three-star Autumn review at the top of this page is for one of the few oils whose page states a range above 10% ("Recommended fragrance load 7-11% for candles"), and even that stops short of 12%.
Rule out the wick, wax and cure first
Average throw at a high load usually means the candle is not releasing what it already holds. The common causes, in the order they are cheapest to check (tendencies, not certainties):
The three-candle pre-check folds the first three into one pour: your oil at 10% (not 12%), one wick size up, cured a full week, burned to the end. It costs ₹1,167.00: ₹264.00 of oil, ₹297.00 of wax, ₹186.00 of jars, a ₹120.00 pack of 10 Cotton Braided Wicks as the example rung, and ₹300.00 of labour. If it throws as well as your 12% candle, you have your answer without buying a single new oil, and it pays back in about 0.3 months at 300 candles a month. If hot throw improves as soon as the wick does, the oil was never the problem (why 8% to 10% did not improve hot throw runs through the same reasoning); a wick that struggles at high load is the higher-load, smaller-flame post, and a candle that turns under-wicked once fragrance goes in is the under-wicked-after-10% post.
The swap test: which oils, which loads, what it costs
If the pre-check does not fix the throw, the oil itself may be the limit. Test two or three oils in your scent family at 8% and 10%, inside every stated maximum, against your 12% candle as the control. For a coffee-vanilla gourmand (the worked example), CSI's candidates are Roasted Coffee and Dark Vanilla, both stating "candles (6-10%)". Change-control treats this as a new formulation: what to retest when changing fragrance oil lists what to check, and the sweating-after-a-change post explains why lower loads come before wax changes.
| Arm | Oil | Wax | Oil + wax | Against your 12% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Control: your oil at 12% | ₹105.60 | ₹96.80 | ₹202.40 | — |
| Your oil at 10% | ₹88.00 | ₹99.00 | ₹187.00 | ₹15.40 less |
| Roasted Coffee at 10% | ₹74.76 | ₹99.00 | ₹173.76 | ₹28.64 less |
| Roasted Coffee at 8% | ₹59.81 | ₹101.20 | ₹161.01 | ₹41.39 less |
| Dark Vanilla at 10% | ₹152.92 | ₹99.00 | ₹251.92 | ₹49.52 more |
| Dark Vanilla at 8% | ₹122.34 | ₹101.20 | ₹223.54 | ₹21.14 more |
| If this arm passes | Saving per candle | Per month | Per year | Payback of the test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your oil at 10% only | ₹15.40 | ₹4,620.00 | ₹55,440.00 | 1.4 months |
| Your oil at 9% (if you add the arm) | ₹23.10 | ₹6,930.00 | ₹83,160.00 | 0.9 months |
| Roasted Coffee at 10% | ₹28.64 | ₹8,592.00 | ₹1,03,104.00 | 0.7 months |
| Dark Vanilla at 8% or 10% | none: dearer | — | — | a price decision |
The 18-candle test costs ₹6,400.62: Roasted Coffee ₹483.22 and Dark Vanilla ₹920.00 (108 g each for three candles at 8% and three at 10%, so a single 100 g bottle is not enough), ₹580.80 of your own oil for the control and the 10% arm, 3,252 g of wax (₹1,788.60), 18 jars (₹1,116.00), 18 wicks (₹162.00) and nine hours of labour (₹1,350.00). Sensitivity: at 100 candles a month, 12% → 10% is worth ₹18,480.00 a year; at 1,000 a month, ₹1,84,800.00. The general method for comparing more oils at more loads is the cost-per-finished-candle method; the design of a lower-load ladder is the lower-load test design.

Skip for this decision: a 1 kg bottle of anything before the swap test passes, and any oil whose page states 13% bought as a way to keep running at 12%. The ceiling is not the problem you are solving.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, wax and wicks named here and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to buy our Dark Vanilla to save money, that our Chunks wax costs more than the worked-example wax, and that your cheapest fix may need no new oil at all.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, size by size; every size of the four picks is in stock on that date. Ceilings and cure wording are quoted from the pages; where a page does not say which weight basis it uses, we say so.
The 12% is your figure; the 200 g gourmand candle, your oil at ₹4,400.00 a kilo, the other unit prices, 300 candles a month, ₹150.00 an hour and the test counts are labelled worked examples; the melt-pool figures are rules of thumb.
